Modern Unlocks 2

*THIS IS NOT A GAME- it is an unofficial reference guide. Meek is Murder is in no way affiliated with Activision or Infinity Ward.*

Modern Unlocks 2 (the app formerly known as “MW2″/”MW2 Pwn”) is the unofficial companion app for the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by Infinity Ward. Modern Unlocks 2 serves as a handy reference guide to the game’s unlocks, including Achievements, Multiplayer Challenges, Titles, Emblems, and now Maps. No internet connection required.

The Challenges section includes detailed weapons info so you can compare stats on all the different Multiplayer guns and map out exactly which guns you’ll choose to focus on as you level up.

Also included is a checklist feature so you can keep track of which Challenges and Achievements you’ve completed so far and how many you have left to tackle.

Mortal Skies

Mortal Skies is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Have you ever continued to do something you knew was probably not good for you?  I have.  Recently, in fact.

Mortal Skies is a perfect example.  I love this game- even though my hand gets so tired it starts to cramp up after a mission or two.  But I keep playing.  So the obvious questions are what is Mortal Skies and what makes it so good?

The year is 1944 and it’s World War II. You’re a flyboy (or girl).  Your orders are to stop a hostile invasion force from taking over the world.  You up to the task?

Mortal Skies, from Erwin Jansen, is a shoot ‘em up that reminds me of the arcade game 1942 from Capcom that I used to play way back in the day.  Video game graphics have come a long way since 1984, though, and this one looks great.

Mortal Skies consists of 7 levels, or missions, in which the player engages enemy planes, bombers, tanks, and choppers.  Through shooting and blowing thing up, players can earn extra planes and a open a bonus level based on their achievements.  At the end of each mission is an endboss that must be defeated in a one-on-however-many-they-choose-to-throw-at-you dogfight.

Along the way, players can receive gun upgrades, reflective shields, increase health, unlock planes, and earn gold, bronze, and silver cups.

I enjoyed playing Mortal Skies.  It’s a straightforward shooter game that requires a minimum of strategy.  Yes, the enemies you’re fighting have different abilities you must adapt to in order to beat them, but if you’ve acquired enough weapon upgrades, you can last a while in a straight-up dogfight.  If you haven’t the weapons, it’s nearly impossible to defeat the endbosses at the tail end of each mission.

That brings up another point: the game’s difficulty.  Players can control their plane using either touch controls or the accelerometer and can adjust the difficulty setting to make it easier.  However, it’s still very tough even on the easiest slider setting.  A pending update (1.1) will make it easier to play, however, and should also lighten the plane so it doesn’t drag to the degree it currently does.

I would definitely recommend Mortal Skies: the gameplay is solid, graphics are superb, and it’s quite a challenge.

But one of those nifty carpal tunnel hand casts is almost certainly in my future.

GO! GO! Rangers!

GO! GO! Rangers! is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Right off the bat, if you have any interest in turn based strategy games, this review is worth your time. If not, read the review anyway, because everyone should be interested in turn based strategy games. When you read the title, GO! GO! Rangers!, the first thing to pop in your head might be the mid-ninety’s children’s television show, the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. Well, that really has nothing to do with this game. When you see the graphics for the game, the first thing to pop in your head might be the mid-ninety’s video game/TV show franchise, Pokemon. Well, that is a bit closer to the truth. Kind of… Both of those were popular after I was out of their target age group, but that won’t stop me from enjoying this fun little game.

GO! GO! Rangers! is a game about battling a bunch of heroes against a big boss monster. All of the heroes have different abilities that change the course of the battle constantly. It is an extremely deep strategy game that requires a bit of homework on your part to figure everything out. Luckily, I’ve done a fair amount of your homework for you. (you’re welcome)

You play on a 3×4 grid and you move your ranger heroes around this board. There are basically two phases to the game, the tactical phase and the battle phase. During the tactical phase, you can move your heroes one square up, down, left or right that is not already occupied. Their position on this board determines which action ability they will use. Then comes the battle phase. This is just the execution of the heroes abilities followed by an attack from the boss monster. An interesting aspect is that the heroes will not preform their abilities if they moved during the tactical phase, only if they were stationary. You have to constantly weigh the pros and cons of moving heroes out of the monster’s attack range or being able to use their ability. Pretty fun stuff.

I’ll admit. What drew me to this app was the crazy ass Japanese to English translations. They are pretty much hilarious. They do make it hard to figure certain aspects of the game out, but worth it in my opinion. One thing I wanted to see in GO! GO! Rangers! was the ability to level up my heroes. I generally like to go back to old battles and level up my characters to make them stronger. You do get new heroes almost constantly, though, so that’s not really a problem either. If you think you might like to try GO! GO! Rangers! out, IMAGIO Co. has put out a lite version. Check it out and get your turn based strategy fix.

From Idea to App Store in Just 3 Days – Project 72

From Idea to App Store in Just 3 Days – Project 72 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $0.99    Score: 8/10    By Shaun CampbellProject 72

The four boys of Dogtown Studios, Rasmus, Mikael, Calle and Ivan, set themselves quite the challenge earlier this month. On January 5th they began “Project 72” – an ambitious project with the goal of producing a great iPhone game, from scratch, in just 72 hours. Graphics, programming, sound FX, music, beta testing, press releases – everything had to be created in only 3 days.

Proving that the work was all done in real-time, they streamed live from their “office-garage” in Venice Beach, CA to their website at dogtownstudios.com. They posted blog updates, photos and tweeted almost constantly to thousands of interested followers. While the game development process only took 72 hours, Apple’s approval system is unfortunately much slower and Project 72 was only recently approved on the 25th of January. Now that it’s available, what’s the verdict?

The first thing that comes to mind when I opened up Project 72 was the word “wow”. They made this in 3 days? The visuals are slick and polished and the game is instantly playable. The user controls a little spaceship which you have to maneuver by tilting your device to dodge all different kinds of obstacles like asteroids, black holes and UFO’s.

The further you travel through the level, the higher your score. As you jet though space your ship uses up fuel but you can replenish your stores by navigating towards the small green nuclear icons on the map. If you take on too much damage, or run out of fuel, it’s game over.

The music and sound FX in Project 72 aren’t quite on par with the graphics and gameplay, but its still an admirable effort. While I’m not sure how much the guys plan to update the game now that is has been approved, or if they want to try and preserve the product “as is”, but as few little tweaks here and there could make this an even better game.

Project 72 is a truly impressive achievement and I take my hat off to the boys for what they have managed to create in such a short period of time. I would also encourage anyone with an interest in game design or app development to take a look at the Dogtown blog from the 3-day development marathon.

Project 72 requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.

SPORE Creatures ($6.99)

Version – 1.0.0

REVIEW – “Move your way up the food chain in this action packed sequel!”

iPhone App review - SPORE Creatures 1A couple of years ago in 2008, Maxis, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, released a game with a revolutionary concept.  The game was later released on several different platforms including the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.  The basic idea of the game is that you would control the process of evolution and help creatures grow from tiny emotionless blobs into beingsiPhone App Review - SPORE Creatures 5 capable of culture and language.  That game immediately took off and  became hugely popular!  Because of that EA has recently released a sequel called “SPORE Creatures” for iPhone and IPod touch!

The basic idea of SPORE Creatures is that you physically control the development of a single organism as it evolves.  The game play consists of making your way iPhone App Review - SPORE Creatures 2through different levels avoiding enemies and consuming smaller, less complex organisms.  As you pregress through the game you have a direct hand in what characteristics and traits your organism will take on!

As you would expect from EA the graphics and sound in this game are phenomenal!  When you open up the game you are taken directly to the main menu.  From here you can choose to play, edit your “creatures,” check out more games by EA, set the “options,” or get help on how to play.  The menus all have a very polished feel to them and do a good job of adding to the overall feel of the game.

Once you decide to get started you will be put in control of your “creature.”  The way you control him is by tilting your device in the direction you’d like to go.  As you advance through the levels you will see iPhone App Review - SPORE Creatures 3different types of objects that are interactive.  To interact with them all you have to do is touch them on the screen.  Occasionally you will come across civilizations of organisms and you will be given the choice to either consume them or to become friends with them and communicate.

While this game starts out as a very simple concept, it quickly gets more intense.  As you get further into the game You will unlock various iPhone App Review - SPORE Creatures 4ways to add different abilities to your creature.  These abilities are mostly made possible by the adding of various different types of appendages.  This makes your creatures abilities increase in things like “Offensive,” “Defensive,” “Movement,” etc.

I could go into much more detail about how your character is customizable and how the game progresses but words don’t do justice to how much fun this game is!  The best thing is that this is a type of game that can be easily picked up and played by anyone, but it also manages to add plenty of depth and strategy into the mix.  If you’ve been waiting for that next “must-have” game for your iPhone or iPod Touch you will not be disappointed with “Spore Creatures” so check it out today!

Glyder 2 - iPhone App Review

Glyder 2 ($2.99)

Version 1.0

REVIEW – ” This unique game allows you to fly through beautifully crafted worlds.”

Glyder 2 - iPhone App ReviewThis game is just like all of those airplane simulators that you have played before except in fantasy world that you have to see to believe. Glyder 2 is the sequel to the widely popular Glyder, and while the game may seem simple it takes a great deal of practice to really get the hang of it.

When you first start off the game you get a few instructions and then you are placed into the world to collect different types of crystals. You play Eryn who has gotten herself lost in an alternate dimension and not only does she need to explore this new dimension but she needs to find a way home. Glyder 2 - iPhone App Review

The game works solely by the accelerometer as you would expect from this type of game. Tilt down for down and up for up and you dive in order to pick up speed. It all sounds very simple and from there you simply glide around the world collecting the crystals. Collect the crystals and you advance to the next world.

The graphics were well done but the music and sounds got a bit repetitive. Luckily the game allows you to use songs from your ipod so you don’t have to worry about the background music that it supplies, driving you crazy.

Glyder 2 - iPhone App ReviewWhile I really enjoyed the different worlds and exploring, I do have the critique that I could not find a way to adjust the sensitivity controls for the accelerometer. It is nice to have that option ingame so that I can really tweak it in order to find the way that works best for me.

But that just means spending more time really getting the hang of the game, and really that is not such a bad thing. In total there are six different levels to complete which means hundreds of crystals to collect.

You even get to customize Eryn which can be fun especially if you get really involved in all the different mini games offered. There are also a wide range of achievements to earn, so while this is a game you can pick up and play when you have a few minutes, it is also one that can keep you occupied for hours.

This is perhaps this best flying game for the iphone, so be sure to pick it up!

‘Ancient Frog’ on iPad – Developer Thoughts

‘Ancient Frog’ on iPad – Developer Thoughts is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

For the many that surely missed it, on Wednesday Apple quietly announced a new member of the iPhone OS family, the iPad. And, while it runs existing iPhone applications just fine in a pixel-for-pixel or 2x-scaled mode, the device with its 9.7-inch screen has much more to offer in the way of screen real estate (over 5x the pixel count of the iPhone) and both CPU and GPU power. The iPad proposition gives iPhone developers much to ponder in the way of just how best to support it.

James Brown, author of the lovely, zen-like frog manipulation game Anicent Frog [App Store] has, himself, begun to ponder the situation and has shared his thoughts on what he feels makes the most sense in bringing Ancient Frog to the iPad, in a recent blog post.

I can make the current iPhone application recognise the iPad and behave more like a native application on that platform. What I've done here is run it at 768×1024, but allowing it to letterbox slightly to retain the original aspect ratio (luckily the ragged border gives me a neat way to bring the edges in a bit, as well as a bit of room to lose some pixels top and bottom). This already looks way better than the previous shot – lots of elements are still blurry, but things that appear at varying scales in the game are already at a higher resolution. This means the text, the daisy and the particle effects are all crisp, which makes the whole thing seem higher resolution

He goes on to point out that fully supporting the iPad's enhanced resolution in his existing iPhone game would not only require a reworking of the graphics that make up every level, but would also push the game above the 10MB barrier for Edge / 3G download, which would greatly reduce the game's "impulse buy" potential for iPhone users.

Brown's plan is to bring the incremental upgrade that he describes, enhancing the game experience on the iPad in the near term and, down the road, release a separate, larger iPad-only version that takes full advantage of the device, but does not penalize iPhone and iPod touch gamers with a larger install.

For new games, moving forward, building in specific support for the iPad is one thing. But reaching into the back catalog to refresh existing titles for Apple's new device is quite another. Just what degree of iPad support is worth adding? What make the most sense? Once gamers start getting iPads in their hands, the early reaction to the experience of gaming on the device, as well as overall sales levels, should help answer that question. But developers and gamers alike should keep in mind the fact that, when the App Store launched, the iPhone had been on the market for a full year with millions of units sold. When a gamer downloads the first iPad game from the App Store, its market will be starting at zero. As such, it will be some time before developers determine where the "sweet spot" of iPad development effort lies.
