One Man Band is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

I was reading my Twitter feed a few minutes ago and saw this tweet from @wmcraver: This app reminds me of something @imogenheap would use…http://bit.ly/9T0hPJ Pretty amazing!

I haven’t messed with the app at all (yet), but thenextweb.com (the site the video came from) says that it has a “fairly steep learning curve” i.e. I should probably never touch it. Regardless, this video is awesome and really shows off the iPhone’s ability as a music device. Enjoy!

The Boy Scouts have a motto: Be Prepared. The Cub Scouts have one also, but it has nothing to do with being prepared, or this review. That said, iPhone users have access to thousands of apps in the app store that provide readily available expert reference and guidance regarding many different topics, allowing us (iPhone users) to always “Be Prepared.”

This is a review of Pocket CPR, an app that helps us “be prepared” to save a life in the event someone needs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Although there are many similar apps in the app store, Pocket CPR is a training tool and is free.

Pocket CPR for iPhone “coaches” it’s user through the CPR process, using clear visual and audio step-by-step instructions, as well as feedback, to guide students or trained personnel through CPR practice. The app’s description contains the following disclaimer:

NOTE: The Pocket CPR for iPhone is currently for training and practice purposes only. The application is not yet cleared by the U.S. FDA for use in an actual rescue.

The one feature that separates this CPR (training) app from others, is its use of “feedback,” explained below.

When opening Pocket CPR, two things are immediately clear:

1. There’s not much really to this app, and
2. This app is for TRAINING USE ONLY.

photo13

The “I” links to a built-in users manual. The user can configure his/her settings to define a pre-determined emergency number, which is available for use throughout the process, or start CPR, “with breathing” and “hands only.”

Both processes provide clear audio and visual instructions, allowing the user to set the iPhone down until beginning chest compressions and every instructional screen (which the user can advance through using finger swipes) contains an option to dial the pre-determined emergency number.

Prior to the user/student/trainee beginning chest compressions, he/she is instructed (via audio and visual) how to properly hold the iPhone when giving chest compressions:

photo1

The student/trainee then receives instruction on proper chest compression techniques, e.g. hand placement, etc., then the “coach” kicks in, advising the user to begin CPR:

photo4

Pocket CPR then utilizes the iPhone’s accelerometer hardware to pace chest compressions, detect the rate of actual compressions and the proper depth of those compressions (using the “Depth Gauge” and a corresponding red/green bar displayed on the screen) and notify the student to push faster, slower or remain at their current rate. This is all accompanied with/by visual and audio feedback:

photo3

photo11

photo9

After detecting 30 chest compressions, the app prompts it’s user to provide ventilations after the detection of 30 chest compressions:

photo12

The process repeats itself until it’s stopped by the user (I quit after 4 “sessions.”).

I did find it somewhat difficult (not to mention uncomfortable and precarious) to hold my iPhone in that manner while giving chest compressions. However, since this is a training app, none of that should factor into your use of the application. I also verified the accuracy of the app’s depth gauge by using a 12-inch ruler. It’s definitely accurate.

In all, if provided with the proper equipment (a CPR “dummy,” etc.) this is a good app for trained personnel and/or learning students to practice with, but I wouldn’t use it in a real-life situation. As impressive as this app is, it’s no substitute for real, proper training. If you’re looking for a detailed, instructional app for giving CPR, this is not it. It’s simply a good (free) training aid that compliments personal knowledge of the CPR process and how to perform it properly.

‘Mole – Quest for the Terracore Gem’ Sparkles is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Do you have what it takes to help Mark the mole locate the elusive Terracore gem?  That's the question, really, in Roo Games' recent release Mole - Quest for the Terracore Gem! [App Store].

Mole is a game that, on the surface resembles classic Dig Dug, but is really a deeper game (sorry) that's much more about scoring up in order to better equip your character than simple arcade action. In Mole, you start off as a rather ill-equipped Mark the mole that can't do much beyond burrow about the top-most layer of the six-layer underground world that hides the fabled Terracore Gem (in the deepest layer, of course). While burrowing, you can pick up various precious metals and gems, and they can be used to up your gear in the equip shop — and better gear is what really opens up the game. It's a gear-to-gameplay dynamic that's reminiscent of that in Hook Champ.

The aforementioned shop offers air tanks, pick axes, gem detectors, and the like for the player with enough metal. All of them help you on your quest, but the most important upgrade would have to be the air tanks, for, despite the occasional pockets of air that can be found in some (but not all) of the underground layers, you're not going to get very deep without some serious tankage. And the Terracore Gem lies deep.

The game offers very simplistic controls that work quite well; tap out some distance from your mole and he'll move there or just hold and drag in the direction you want to travel. The arrangement of on-screen indicators can be adjusted for left or right players, as well.

See the developer's gameplay video.

This is one of those games that delivers just a really nice balance between light playfield strategy (how deep should you go with your limited oxygen supply?) and asset allocation (how best to spend money in the shop?). If break-neck arcade action is what you're after, then Mole – Quest for the Terracore Gem! will disappoint, but for the gamer that can weigh risks and keep their eye on the goal, this one is a true hidden gem.

In honor of the Game Developers Conference 2010, Mole is free until Sunday, March 14th.

iVault App — Storage Vault Security for iPhone and iPod Touch is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Another storage vault security application tool designed for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch gadgets is iVault Application.

The application has quite similar function with the mSecure application; thought iVault app is more on vault storage protection. Yet, inside such vault would be the same, if not mostly similar to that of the information protected by the mSecure app. This includes confidential data as such social security and credit card information stored in the portable devices’ encrypted vault.

How is iVault being used?

The advent of mobile phones has offered a lot of benefits to almost every people across the globe. Instant communication thru text messages or calls has broken the barrier of contact. Moreover, information is also made portable, so you can have them anytime and anywhere you wanted. It is simply because they are stored inside your portable devices’ vault storage. Such function is also deemed as information management.

The iPhone and iPod Touch from Apple are good evident of information management system. Apple has designed them for such purpose of handling different types of information, particularly music and video files. More than that are other information storing capabilities, like contact details, map directions, appointment schedules and reminders and even some of the most private information a person owns. This is the reason why most people rely on them to the extent of storing this sensitive information on them.

Nevertheless, it is also foreseeable that time will come that either of these devices would get lost or perhaps get stolen. When this occurs, everything stored on it will also vanish in an instant. This may include all the sensitive and valuable information you have stored on its vault.

The Role of iVault App

The importance of security applications for iPhone and iPod Touch devices are truly emphasized and noticed in cases like these. Thinking that unintentional loss of these gadgets is possible, it would be always good to implement some sort of information security ahead, while the device is still in your custody. The iVault application can make this doable. It would allow you to securely save private information into a vault that is encrypted. All the data are then secured.

With iVault application, you can take and save encrypted images and other files. Its language utility handles the translation of seven languages. You can also create back up files of the private information or restore them on a protected and isolated site including the Internet. Web synchronization is also possible with iVault app. Free updates are also obtainable.

All these and more features you can take advantage from having this iVault application for iPhone and iPod Touch. With the cost of $9.99 (iVault Pro), it is certainly the best value for your money.

REVIEW – “Fast paced volleyball action on your mobile device!”

iOverTheNet 1 - iPhone App ReviewThere are tons of apps available in Apple’s App Store, but unfortunately it’s not always that easy to find a game that feels new and is a lot of fun, but this game does just that!  While there have been lots of sports games in the App Store, there have been very few volleyball games.  This game takes you right into the action as you travel the world competing in beach volleyball!

The game loads quickly and takes you to a main menu screen.  The background music here is descent, typical upbeat sports music.  It does get a little old after a while, but is iOverTheNet 2 - iPhone App Reviewalso easy to turn off by either putting your device on vibrate or by turning it off in the “Setup” menu.  There are a couple of other options available here like the ability to change the camera view and your player name.

One thing that I think a lot of people will notice quickly is that there is only one difficulty setting.  The reason that I think people will notice it is that this game is very difficult when you first start playing it.  I would highly recommend that everyone check out the tutorial video that is available because it does a good job of visually illustrating iOverTheNet 3 - iPhone App Reviewhow the controls work.  Without the video it is definitely not easy to figure out.

Once you are ready to get started there are two modes of play.  “Single Game,” and “World Tour.”  In the single game mode you get to choose a city to play in and your opponent, while in the world tour you will play several games, moving from place toiOverTheNet 4 - iPhone App Reviewplace and playing different opponents.  You’ll notice that there are quite a few teams to choose from and even more destinations to play at.

Game play itself is a lot of fun if you’re willing to learn how to play.  I found very quickly that the “auto motion” feature makes it almost impossible to do well because the AI for moving your player is very poor.  While the manual control iOverTheNet 5 - iPhone App Review(via a small D-pad in the lower left corner) takes some getting used to, it actually works quite well once you adjust to it, and is the only way that you will be able to compete against the computer.

I found that most of the controls were pretty easy except for the “swipe” that is used to spike the ball and jump serve.   The problem I had with it was that it was very difficult to figure out whether it was my location in the air, the speed of my swipe, or the direction of my swipe when it didn’t work right.  It was not quite as bad while spiking as the serving though.  I found that if I tried to jump serve I ended up not getting it over the net more often than not.  With all of that said, I was eventually able to adjust to the swiping controls.

If you like a challenge I think that you’ll find this game to be a blast.  While there are a few small flaws in the gameplay itself, specifically that it is almost impossible to hit the ball over the net before the third strike even if you want, this game still manages to be a lot of fun and the graphics are extremely nice.  If you enjoy volleyball this could very well be the game that you’ve been waiting for.  So my question is if you’re still reading this review what are you waiting for?  Head to the App Store and grab your copy of iOverTheNet today!

TimeLoop – iPhone App Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Timeloop - iPhone App Review

TimeLoop (Free)

Version 0.0.3

REVIEW – “Spend time being in two places at once with this unique puzzle game.”

TimeLoop - iPhone App ReviewThere are a number of different puzzle games for the iPhone but this the first puzzle where the trick is not having enough hands but knowing how to use the extra hands correctly. In TimeLoop you are Nik, a mere janitor droid, but when a time machine experiment goes horribly wrong, it is up to you to save the day.

The scientists in the lab where Nik works have been working on a time machine, but when they test the machine everything goes wrong. All of the scientists (and the poor lab cats) are now trapped in time and quickly running out of oxygen.TimeLoop - iPhone App Review

In order to save the scientists you must fix doors and problems within mere seconds in order to save the scientists (and the cats!) before they run out of oxygen. But you will quickly find that sometimes doors will only open if they are being worked on, and since you cannot be in two places at once, that is where the TimeLoop comes in.

When you activate the TimeLoop time restarts with your past self repeating the actions you did before activating the TimeLoop (i.e. if you were working on the door when you activated the TimeLoop, your past self will work on the door.) This allows you to be in two  places at once so that you can move through the doorways and save everyone in time.

But that is only the beginning as soon you will have to get your past self and your future self working in the correct sequence in order to pass through all the doors and save everyone before they run out of oxygen.

TimeLoop - iPhone App ReviewThe levels start out relatively easy but even so I was not able to get higher than Bronze on the levels even after trying them a few times, so there is definitely enough challenge to this game for kids and adults alike.

The graphics are very cartoonish which brings a sense of fun to this rather intense puzzle game. The idea is very unique and quite fun which means that it is a game that will have a permanent place on my already cluttered iPhone.

Better yet, this game is on sale for this weekend only, so grab the full version of this game today before it goes back to the price of $.99.  This game is really a lot of fun and it does get pretty hard, especially if you want to get those top scores.

iPhone Scanner&Fax Takes The Office Mobile is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $7.99    Score: 9/10    By Michael EssanyScanner&Fax

Gone are the days when one had to be at the office to scan and fax documents before the work day was done. The iPhone Scanner&Fax application takes the concept of mobile office gadgets to the next level by augmenting the iPhone with a capability that will be much appreciated by those who find themselves at work while on the go.

Developed by Zirak S.R.L., The Scanner&Fax app provides users with a pocket-accessible fax machine and scanner that effectively enables mobile professionals to conduct business beyond the cubicle’s boundaries.

It works as you might expect. The iPhone’s camera serves as a scanner. The application’s photo enhancing properties enables users to spruce up the look of the document before faxing it off, transferring it over Wi-Fi, or incorporating the scanned image into a PDF document.

Other features include:

  • Store any number of pictures and PDF documents
  • Protect PDF documents with a password
  • Archive and share the documents
  • Send faxes worldwide
  • Send a cover-only fax
  • Browse trough sent faxes history, and unsent faxes list

This one little app packs a pretty substantial punch. And, best of all, Scanner&Fax requires no Internet connection except for e-mail, Internet sharing and fax sending.

Fast and simple to use, the only potential messy aspect of the app is the possibility of a single fax spanning more than one page – that is, of course, if the scanned document’s dimensions extend beyond the dimensions of one page. Overall, it’s no different that similar glitches experienced by a real-life fax machine.

Scanner & Fax is a top notch app for a remarkably reasonable price.

Scanner&Fax requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later and is only compatible with iPhone 3GS.

Leave it to MTV and VH1 to provide us folks that lived through the 80’s with one of the most memorable trivia games ever produced for the App Store.  There are a myriad of 80’s facts or trivia games out there, but I doubt many use the MTV pop-ups and dialogue that are so familiar to those that grew up in the decade.

Yes, there are ads, but you can’t beat the initial price.  Yes, you only get one round of questions that are the same no matter how many times you play.  Additional q…Read More
