GDC 2010: ‘geoDefense 2′ Coming for the iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

This afternoon we met with David Whatley of Critical Thought Games and aside from race cars and sniper rifles, we also discussed the future of his company and the geoDefense series of tower defense games.

Following a series of complicated business deals involving his former company, Simutronics, Whatley will soon be focusing full time on game development. Formerly, Critical Thought Games was a very small operation that existed entirely out of David's spare time. In the not too distant future, Critical Thought Games will be expanding, adding employees and setting up a brand new office to build iPhone, iPad, and various Facebook social games.

Fans of the geoDefense series will be happy to know that one of these new games they're working on is geoDefense 2. Initially the sequel will be iPad-only, with levels and gameplay that take advantage of the increased screen real estate available on the device. It will share the same graphical style, only this time instead of a small array of towers with deep upgrade paths, Whatley is debating a Plants vs. Zombies style game that just has tons of different towers to utilize.

Things with geoDefense 2 are still in the air while the new Critical Thought Games offices and staff get settled, but David assured us he does have plans to adapt the iPad version of the game to the iPhone as well. Needless to say, once more details are available on geoDefense 2, we'll post them.

I recently picked up Heavy Rain, for the PS3, and played it through in one setting. After being locked to the television for 8 hours straight, my wife had to come peel me from my chair. The game was an amazing experience, and really expanded my interest in cinematic gaming experiences. When I saw The Graveyard out for iDevices, I jumped at the chance to once again experience this style of play.

mzl_ruatibpf_480x480-75I believe it’s silly to assume that you’ll find a similar scope in a PS3 game that you will in an iDevice game, but I was surprised at how fast my gaming experience ended in The Graveyard. My best comparison would be assigning Heavy Rain a full motion picture length, and The Graveyard being a YouTube video. There isn’t anything wrong with YouTube videos; they just usually aren’t all that long.

Length aside, The Graveyard provides an extremely powerful message, though I think that message will be lost on a lot of people, especially the younger crowd. The game boils down to a look back on the life of an elderly woman, as she passes through the graveyard of people who have come and gone before her. At the end of the long stretch of graveyard is a bench that the elderly woman sits on to rest.

The goal of the game, for lack of a better term, is to slowly walk this woman through the long corridor of the graveyard and sit her down on the bench. Once there, the real message of the game begins.
Control wise, the game plays fairly rough. My first play through found me moving from side to side, not truly understanding how to get the woman to move straight down the path. After getting to the bench, I wasn’t sure how to sit down. I checked out the instructions by pressing the bottom right hand corner. They explained how to sit down, but when I tried to close the window in the same manner I opened it, I was tossed to an internet site. I closed out and restarted the game, and had to make the slow walk once again.

I’m having trouble really coming to a conclusion on if to recommend this game. At $1.99 it doesn’t provide a LOT of gaming potential. As an art form, it’s an amazing experience. It’s an easy recommend based on its merits to artists. It’s visually appealing; the impressive graphics matched with the soft black and white environment make it great to look at. I keep coming back to the short game play for the price, however.

My recommendation for the reader would be to try out the free version if you appreciate various forms of art. If you have a very powerful experience, grab the full version to support the developer. The only difference between the two, according to the developer, is that death is a possibility in the full version. Not the best marketing plan, but I am a big advocate for supporting developers who create a worthwhile product.

If the hidden messages and deep meanings behind song and art really don’t fit your fancy, The Graveyard is not for you. You would be better to try the free version if your curiosity is still peaked. That said, my own personal opinion is that it was a beautiful display of how game and cinema can be joined together for a fully interactive experience. I hope more developers follow suit with this approach.

Namco Teases Tekken for iPhone is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

tekken6

Speaking to Pocket Gamer, an anonymous Namco Networks representative claimed that the company’s flagship one-on-one fighting game series Tekken is on its way to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The franchise’s latest sequel, Tekken 6, hit consoles late last year after a successful run in arcades. Like its predecessors, Tekken 6 brings together dozens of bizarre fighters — including pandas, kangaroos, and necktie-wearing furry pro wrestlers — for the brutal “King of Iron Fist” tournament.

There’s also this one guy who got dropped into a volcano, but survived, then was killed again, but remains in the game as a playable character. He wears a giant diaper now, for some reason. Anyway, the story’s not the point.

Namco’s representative revealed no further details regarding Tekken for the iPhone, leaving room for speculation. Will it be a port of the PSP version of Tekken 6? Will it be an upgraded version of the recently released Tekken Mobile? Or will it be an all-new game? Whatever it is, it should offer some solid competition for Capcom’s upcoming iPhone version of Street Fighter IV.

Indie Art Game The Graveyard Arrives on iPhone is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

graveyardIndie games developer Tale of Tales has released an iPhone version of its interactive art piece The Graveyard ($1.99).

The Graveyard is a very short cinematic experience in which players guide an old woman through a graveyard. Sit on a bench, and a song plays. Once the song stops, you may exit the graveyard, and the game ends.

“It’s more like an explorable painting than an actual game,” the developer explains. However, the addition of interactivity helps to establish mood and leave a lasting impression on the player. In my opinion, anyway.

The game can be downloaded and played for free, in near-entirety, with The Graveyard Lite. The paid version adds the possibility of the old woman dying at the end of the game.

App Sale: You Are Rich is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

You Are Rich is on sale for free – normally a complete ripoff!

When the iTunes App Store first opened up in the summer of 2008, some jackass named Armin Heinrich released an app called I Am Rich which was basically a jpeg image of a red jewel that included some kind of “secret mantra” intended to make you believe you hadn’t just flushed $999.99 down the drain. Fast forward to… uh… today… and now you can get the very same app for free! Well, not exactly the same app, but pretty damn close.

I never saw the inner workings of the original “rich” app because (a) I was never quite drunk – or rich – enough to buy it, and (b) it got squashed by Apple within a few days after being released. But hey! Now you can see what that app *probably* looked like on the inside for free… red gem, idiotic self-affirmations, and all. And then you can say holy crap I’m glad I didn’t just waste $99.99! Yes, that’s what You Are Rich costs on a normal day, $99.99… more recently it was $.99, but that’s still $.99 too much.

So if I think this app is such a waste of time, why am I announcing the sale? Consider it a public service! If you get this app right now while it’s free, you’ll never have to wonder what it would be like to drop a single dime on an app designed specifically for morons with money to burn. Ok, to be fair, a lot of apps seem like they’re designed for morons but this one, like the 2008 ripoff it’s copy-catting, is in a league of its own.

Upcoming ‘Super Feed Me’ – Eat and Swing your way to Safety is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Nitrome, a flash game developer, is planning to release one of their popular flash games called Feed Me, on the iPhone. The new version will be called ‘Super Feed Me’ since it will have updated graphics and not be a direct port of the original.

Details about the new game are extremely limited. At the moment all we have is a blog post on Nitrome’s website and a trailer you saw above. If you want to get an idea for how the game will play you can check out the flash version on their website. The game reminds me of Hook Champ, which was a big hit last year.

No release date set yet but they plan to have the game out later this year. Keep an eye on the discussion in our forum for more details.

Road to the IGF Mobile: Spider’s Randy Smith is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

mzl.libiaekh.480x480-75

[In the next in a series of Road to the IGF Mobile interviews with 2010 Independent Games Festival Mobile finalists, FingerGaming speaks to Randy Smith of Spider developer Tiger Style, whose game is currently competing in the Best Mobile Game category, having won the IGF Mobile award for Best iPhone Game.]

As pastoral as it is eerie, Tiger Style’s elegant Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor ended 2009 heralded as not only one of the year’s best iPhone games, but one of the best on any platform.

Having recently won the IGF Mobile Best iPhone game award, FingerGaming spoke to industry veteran and Tiger Style head Randy Smith about the studio’s stunning debut heading into the IGF.

What is your background in game development?

I’ve in the games industry for 12 years, primarily as a designer / director. I worked on the Thief series with Looking Glass and ION Storm, and consulted with Arkane Studios, Ubisoft, and others. My most recent gig before starting Tiger Style was a creative director at EA on one of the projects with Steven Spielberg.

Can you tell us what development tools you used to create Spider?

The iPhone SDK, xCode, Photoshop, and various other visual/audio/music creators and editors.

How long was the game in development?

8 months.

How did the initial concept come about?

We solicited the team for short, 1-2 sentence game concepts. Of those, we selected a small handful and did treatments of them – about 20 pages of PowerPoint that got into more depth of what the game would be about and how it would work.

Spider’s treatment attracted the most attention within the team. Originally we envisioned it as more of a slow-paced spider simulator, but during the pre-production and prototyping phases we refined our movement controls and web-building mechanic which in turn pushed the game into the form you see today.

spider2

Detractors of the platform always bemoan the lack of “real” games on the iPhone, citing examples like Rolando and Spider as something more substantial. Do you think there’s more that can be done to bring more traditional, progression-based games to the iPhone?

The iPhone is very capable gaming platform. We’ve been enjoying deep, high quality games on similar platforms such as the DS for many years (think Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart), and there is no technical reason that iDevices can’t offer similar experiences.

In fact, Tiger Style was originally drawn to the iPhone because of its unique hardware — the high degree of connectivity, the GPS, touchscreen and accelerometer, less traditional inputs such as camera and mic, its omnipresence, etc. — lots of cool stuff to experiment with.

This could be a revolutionary gaming platform, and we also believe the demographic is very open-minded and willing to try new things. We want to see the iPhone realize its potential for the better of gaming in general.

Market pressure is the major reason we don’t see more of this kind of experimentation and deeper, higher production quality games. The App Store is flooded with very cheap games. It’s hard for a consumer to know why one game is worth 5-10x more than another, and it’s hard for a developer to prove that their game is worth more than the rest.

This creates enormous risk, and the best way around that risk is to join the crowd who is aiming low and selling cheap. This doesn’t leave much margin for high quality development.

How important was the ambient narrative you employed in defining Spider? You had a lot of feedback as to what players wanted, or expected, that narrative to be heading into your work on the “Director’s Cut”.

Spider tells the story of an abandoned mansion and the fate of the people who used to live there, but our first emphasis was on the “action drawing” gameplay, getting that right. The narrative came into existence as we more carefully considered and built out the locations in which this gameplay would occur.

Once we realized an abandoned house was our ideal set for the game, we crafted a means of being involved with that story that made it important that you were a spider, you saw the story in a way that only a spider would see it.

By design, the story was ambiguous and left a lot to the imagination, but in some ways it left players wanting more than we intended. So we polled our fans for their interpretation of the story and which levels they liked best, to get a sense of what had worked and what had not worked. Going into the design of Director’s Cut, we gave the players more glimpses of the underlying story to help them patch the holes in their understanding.

spiderhornet

Do you think the “Director’s Cut” and the release of the Hornet Smash mini-game were successful endeavors?

We think they were very successful. Our plan had been to reinforce Spider’s presence as an important iPhone game and give something back to our fans while also trying out a new way to release a “Lite” version of a game – Hornet Smash is an entire free game based around Spider’s popular hornet-tackling gameplay that also happens to contain a Lite version of Spider.

This three-pronged approach gave Spider more attention just in time for the end of the year Best Of lists, in which we did outstandingly well, beyond our expectations. The holiday season was fabulous for us financially, and we’re humbled and pleased by all the praise. This gives us extra time and motivation to do our best with the development of our next games.

If you could reset and start fresh on development of Spider, what would you do differently?

Honestly, probably nothing. There were ups and downs, but it’s hard to argue with this kind of success – we made something we love, it sold reasonably well and was well-recognized, and we had a great time doing it. Hopefully, we took away some important lessons that will help it be less of a death march next time around.

Have you played and enjoyed any of the other IGF Mobile finalists?

Yes, lots of them, especially in the iPhone category, and I look forward to checking out the ones I didn’t know about yet.

What do you think of the current state of the indie scene, particularly in relation to the mobile space?

I think the most obvious comment here is that the App Store has been a huge, huge boost to the indie game development scene, one which we are just now seeing the beginning of. The App Store (and its future clones) has centralized indie gaming and given it more legitimacy.

Before, if you wanted to release an indie game there was no single, obvious venue, and similarly the audience had no “go-to” spot to find new indie games. This centralizing has made it far more possible to reach a ready audience with an indie game, and the terms of the arrangement are very fair and the SDK is easy to use.

The explosion of Apps is evidence that this model is attracting attention, and in the future, I expect we’ll see ways to sort them out by quality, such as labels much like we see in indie music or indie film. This is an exciting development, because having a robust indie scene, both in terms of finance and creativity, is going to provide the counter-balance to the juggernaut of risk-averse mainstream gaming that we’ve been needing for a very long time.
