ShowMe Stories Helps Keep ‘em Quiet

ShowMe Stories Helps Keep ‘em Quiet is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $0.99    Score: 7/10    By Daniel BischoffShowMe Stories

ShowMe Stories, from developer SID On, is an app with great value for anyone with young kids.  Basically, ShowMe Stories is a collection of visuals that the user reveals by swiping his or her finger over the screen.  The images, controls, and content are all perfect for the little ones in your life.

When you start up ShowMe Stories, you’ll see four different categories to choose from, including men at work, animals, fable figures, and pictures of your own choosing.  Obviously, tapping this last option will bring up the photo albums you currently have stored on your iPhone.  If your child wants to reveal a picture of him or herself, they can do that, but the other categories also have a lot of different images to reveal.

There are 30 pictures in total, and in the first category, Professions, there are images of firemen, construction workers, doctors and garbage men.  After every picture is wiped clean and revealed, the iPhone gives off a little cheer.  It’s a real simple task, but your child is sure to get a kick out of this and want to keep playing.  Simply tapping the little arrow that appears to the right of the image will let them do that.

You can also back out of any category at any time by tapping the menu button that appears in the top left hand corner of the screen.  This helps if your child gets tired of Santa Claus or doesn’t like the hunchback of Notre Dame, from the Fairy Tales section.

Of course, your child can always check out the worms, rabbits, and other animals in the animal section if the other two haven’t appealed to them.  For $0.99, ShowMe Stories is an exceptionally well geared app for people with children who may need to entertain on the go.

While there is an age limit to the children who will be entertained by ShowMe Stories, the app can be an invaluable tool if your child falls within the appropriate age range.  It provides friendly images, audio, and interactivity all in one.

Show Me Stories is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch.  It requires the iPhone 3.0 OS or later.

GDC: Trial And Error With Touch Pets‘ Monetization

GDC: Trial And Error With Touch Pets‘ Monetization is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

touchpets_shotiPhone developer ngmoco released the virtual pet game Touch Pets Dogs onto the App Store in November 2009 as a “freemium” download. But it wasn’t always planned that way.

When the studio was working on the game in early 2009, ngmoco producer Matthew Roberts said they felt the game should be sold for $19.99, in the same price range as games sold on Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

By mid-2009, ngmoco thought it’d be wiser to release the game in the $4.99 to $9.99 range, just based on the pricing trends happening on the App Store at the time. Touch Pets would be a great deal, the studio thought, because it had visuals, gameplay, and depth on par with handheld console-based counterparts.

However the App Store, being the dynamic and unpredictable creature that it can be, made it clear that even a $4.99 game would have an extremely difficult time doing well on a chart-driven storefront that is dominated by 99 cent to $3 games.

Ultimately, Touch Pets became a “freemium” game, or one that is free to download, but requires players to pay in order to enjoy premium features.

‭“‬We were fundamentally trying to get to the answer to the question,‭ ‘‬How do we sell the game‭?’” Roberts said. “‬If you look at the top‭ ‬100‭ ‬apps,‭ ‬that [average] price is generally low.‭ ‬It’s hard to charge more than‭ ‬$3‭ ‬or‭ ‬$4.‭”

‭He said that ngmoco’s strategy quickly shifted from generating revenue at a single point of sale to “[building] the largest audience possible,” then monetizing those players. “‬We just wanted to get it in front of as many people as possible,” Roberts said. ngmoco now offers six different SKUs of Touch Pets, ranging from free all the way up to $40, a scheme that gives players a choice to spend no money, or a relatively large chunk of money.

The games industry is still trying to figure out the free-to-play business model, and ngmoco is no different. In Touch Pets, players give their pets dog food in order to give them energy to play. When they’re out of food, they fall asleep. Want more playtime? Buy more food on the App Store.

But this didn’t take with many players, who left harsh reviews on the game. They felt slighted by the pricing scheme, not to mention that initially when the dog would fall asleep from lack of food, some players thought the pet died.

The studio eventually increased the food replenishment rate, and added the option to directly purchase virtual goods, an option that “tends to be a better value proposition for some customers,” he said. “Understand your monetization strategy,‭ ‬don’t overload mechanics to monetize your game,” Roberts warned.

Finding a balance between mechanics and monetization is key to commercial success. ‭“‬Giving away stuff can increase exposure,‭ ‬but can hurt monetization,” Roberts said. From there, an App Store game has a better chance of reaching the 50, where success can really “snowball.”

TapScanner ($1.99)

Version – 1.0

REVIEW – “Check prices and share products with your friends with TapScanner!”

TapScanner 1 208x300 TapScanner iPhone App ReviewIf you’re a regular at AppShouter you’ve probably noticed that I’ve already reviewed several bar scanning apps in the past.  So what, you might ask, is different about TapScanner?  Well I’m here to tell you that it’s all about the networking!  While RedLaser has already established itself as a leader in this category of apps, TapScanner 2 208x300 TapScanner iPhone App ReviewTapScanner is attempting to take that winning formula and add both a new interface and an easy way to interact with some popular social networks!

One of the things that I was impressed with is that the interface of this app is extremely polished for a newly released app.  The graphics are all simple and yet at the same time very smooth looking.  When you open this app up for the first time you will be asked to register with the TapBase website.  Some may see this as an intrusion of privacy but what it’s for is the social aspect of the app, and all TapScanner 3 208x300 TapScanner iPhone App Reviewthey ask is for an email address and password.

Once you are registered you’re ready to start scanning things.  The main screen that you start at has three buttons along the top of the screen, two buttons in the center and two small buttons in the bottom right corner.  To scan a barcode all you have to do is touch the “Scan” button on the right side of the screen.  The scanner itself works extremely well.  I did not have any trouble whatsoever scanning barcodes as long as they were of the standard type.

If you find the scanner cumbersome or you have an iPod touch and have no camera you can also manually enter barcodes by touching the “Tap” button just to the left of the Scan button.  However you choose to enter the barcode, once you have one entered it will quickly search an internet database for that particular bar code and then display the results on the screen.  Unfortunately this is one area that this app seems to have difficulty with.  I scanned a variety of objects that I had laying TapScanner 4 208x300 TapScanner iPhone App Reviewaround the house and many of them did not show up displaying a “ERROR: NOT  FOUND” message.

With that said, the company behind this app has not even quite published their website yet so I’m betting that the amount of barcodes that read properly will increase greatly with time.  Assuming this is the case, the social features of this app are really quite nice.  Not only can you quickly and easily post an item to your TapScanner 5 208x300 TapScanner iPhone App Reviewfacebook or twitter, but you can also email it to your friends!  This app also keeps a list of all the products that you have shared in any manner on the “Shares” screen of this app.  This allows you to quickly and easily review a product repeatedly to different people!

So in summary I’d have to say that this app has absolutely huge potential!  The interface, both for browsing products that you have found and for scanning and entering barcodes, is one of the slickest that I have seen in the App Store.  If the developer continues to improve its database of items this could in time become the app to beat in this category, and at the very least it is worth an honorable mention for it’s great interface!  If you are a social network junkie, and you like to shop, this is an app that you just can’t afford to pass up!  So what are you waiting for?  Head to the App Store and download TapScanner today!

Drivers Ed (Free)

Version 2.2

REVIEW – “Study for your driving test, or simply brush up on the rules of the road!”

DE1 200x300 Drivers Ed iPhone App ReviewBeing prepared for that first driving test can be stressful but Drivers Ed gives you access to all the important information that you need to know. This app includes over 300 questions that you are likely to encounter and they cover all the information that all drivers need to know.DE21 200x300 Drivers Ed iPhone App Review

The app offers a few different ways in which to study information. You can do practice tests which allow you to choose the number of questions and then go through the test as if you were taking your actual driving exam. The test is then scored and saved so that you are able to monitor your progress.

There is also a flash card feature which presents you with a question. To see the answer you simply tap the blank space below the question. There is no scoring in flash card mode but it does allow you to learn the information before moving on to a practice test.

The app even includes driving manuals for the different states. Now these may not always be up to date  and they are downloaded from websites, so you will need internet access in order to gain access to the manuals for the first time. After that they should be stored on your iPhone for any time access.

DE3 200x300 Drivers Ed iPhone App ReviewThis app is meant to be an advertisement of sorts for Driversed.com and as such you can expect to see subtle plugs here and there. But for those who are interested in taking Driver’s Ed, the website may be worth a look.

This is an easy to use app that goes over a variety of questions. Now there is no guarantee that the questions covered will be on your exam so it is always a good idea to thoroughly study the driver’s manual for your state as well. Personally I think that many adults as well as teens could use a refresher course in the rules of the road, because just about all of us have been at a four way stop and realized that we are the only ones that know what to do. ;)

This app is free so give it a try and see if it helps you succeed on your test and earn that all important driver’s license!
