Newly-Revealed App Store Guidelines Discourage ‘Amateur Hour,’ ‘Fart Apps’
Newly-Revealed App Store Guidelines Discourage ‘Amateur Hour,’ ‘Fart Apps’ is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Apple made two key moves on Thursday by freeing up restrictions on the use of third-party development tools on its iOS mobile devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and also making its App Store review guidelines readily available to app developers for the first time.
By being more transparent with the review guidelines, Apple hopes to help developers potentially avoid frustration that comes when a game or app is rejected after a submission.
Among those review guidelines (obtained by Gamasutra and separately posted by Engadget [PDF]), are several notes about the newly-released Game Center, a networking service that links iOS gamers together by adding community features such as matchmaking and achievements.
The Game Center guidelines are generally common sense rules designed to protect users, the hardware and Apple’s services. Games that utilize Game Center, for instance, cannot “send unsolicited messages, or [be used] for the purpose of phishing or spamming”.
They also cannot “attempt to reverse lookup, trace, relate, associate, mine, harvest, or otherwise exploit Player IDs, alias, or other information obtained through the Game Center.”
There are also a number of ground rules related to offensive material in apps and games. For example, “‘Enemies’ within the context of a game cannot solely target a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity.”
Additionally, “realistic depictions of weapons” that encourage illegal activity could also lead to an app’s rejection, and games and apps with “excessively objectionable or crude content” may be cut, as well as apps designed “primarily [to] upset or disgust users.”
The company is vague in describing where exactly it draws the line between acceptable and objectionable content. The guidelines state, “We will reject Apps for any content or behavior that we believe is over the line. What line, you ask? Well, as a Supreme Court Justice once said, ‘I’ll know it when I see it.’ And we think that you will also know it when you cross it.”
Any apps that target an individual or group with “defamatory, offensive [and] mean-spirited” content are also susceptible to rejection — although “Professional political satirists and humorists are exempt from the ban on offensive or mean-spirited commentary.”
Apple also reminded developers that a lot of kids use apps, and their parents don’t typically set content restriction parameters on their iOS devices, “So know that we’re keeping an eye out for the kids,” the company said.
And unfortunately for developers working on games and apps focusing on flatulence, Apple said plainly, “We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn’t do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted.”
With such a wide array of content available on the App Store, Apple is cautious of letting the quality apps become drowned out by poorly-made products. “If your App looks like it was cobbled together in a few days, or you’re trying to get your first practice App into the store to impress your friends, please brace yourself for rejection. We have lots of serious developers who don’t want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour.”
Apple said that its extensive 22-part laundry list of guidelines might make the company seem like a bunch of “control freaks,” but the statement argued, “it’s because we’re so committed to our users and making sure they have a quality experience with our products. Just like almost all of you are too.”

Get Navigon’s award-winning GPS app for free! is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
With the fall approaching and back to school in full swing Navigon has recently decided to lower the price for it’s GPS apps to $49.99 for the USA version and $29.99 for the region specific versions (East, Central, and West). To celebrate this and to help get the word out about their new great pricing scheme, Navigon has been kind enough to give me a promo code for each of their 4 GPS apps to give away!
There are two ways to enter. The first is to tweet the following message – “@appshouter Enter to win Navigon’s MobileNavigator app free. I want ((put your region here)) – http://bit.ly/av0R5z”, replacing the ((put your region here)) with the region of the app that you would like, should you win.
The second way to enter is to leave a comment on this post telling us why you love AppShouter and what region of the app you would prefer if you win!
I will be giving the apps away late Friday night September 10th so don’t forget to enter, and good luck!

MiDarkTheme is a dark theme (obviously) that contains 36 icons, a dock, status bar, lockscreen background, wallpaper, SMS mod, Safari mod, Phone mod, pop-up mod, Calculator mod, badges, page dots… etc. Overall it is a decently designed theme. There are a few things that could be a little cleaner… like the Safari loading mod but overall it’s not too bad. You can get MiDarkTheme via the modmyi source.

Tap ‘n Cap Says the Words Your Pictures Can’t Convey
Tap ‘n Cap Says the Words Your Pictures Can’t Convey is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Price: $.99 Score: 8/10 By A. Papachristos![]()
Anyone who owns one of Apple’s portable gadgets will tell you that its utmost convenience is the capability to connect with friends, family and the World Wide Web in the blink of an eye. Sharing timely photos and the details of current happenings as they occur is one of the greatest aspects of today’s developing technology.
Tap ‘n Cap by Jeremy Brousseau utilizes such modern conveniences to bring users an intuitive and simple application that allows them to enhance their image sharing experience. With Tap ‘n Cap, users may insert up to six lines of custom text, creating captions for photos attained via their device’s photo library or camera.
Upon startup, users will find the Help screen, which teaches them exactly which actions accomplish certain tasks. A single tap of the empty screen will reveal the main task bar located at the bottom of the screen. The buttons provided are as follows: Settings, Help, Get Pic, Clear, Caption, and Finished.
Under Settings, users can adjust the many features Tap ‘n Cap offers, such as Camera Options (save copy of original, iPhone 3G mode), Photo Options (auto-save on send, auto-crop photos) and Text Options (auto-correct, auto-capitalize, two-finger rotate, default font). In fact, Tap ‘n Cap offers 20 font choices, the default being my favorite as it is reminiscent of the classic LOLCats typeface. These fonts come in black and white, though the developers hope to soon add colors, shadow, opacity and strikethrough to the list of choice in an upcoming update.
To begin the process, users will first need a picture to caption. Tapping the Get Pic button will prompt the question of whether you’d like to choose a photo from you library or take one with your camera (if your device has one). Once you have selected your picture, the once empty space will now display your photo. Conveniently, Tap ‘n Cap supports landscape mode for any type of photo. If you do not like what you see, the Clear button will wipe everything away. However, if you are happy with your image, hop right over to the Caption button to insert your witty words. A box will appear on the screen in which you may begin typing your caption. When you have finished writing, you may then use a single tap to drag your caption to any position on the image. You may scale the caption by using a two-finer pinch. Double tapping the caption will release its own tool bar, which allows you to rotate the words or change the font.
Once complete, tap the Finished button to either save your image to your device or email it to a friend. In the future, the developers also hope to include the ability to upload your images to Facebook and other such social networking sites.
Unfortunately, only those with an iPhone (or the latest iPod Touch) will benefit from the spontaneity Tap ‘n Cap offers. For all other users, the photo you caption must already exist in your photo library (unless you have the external camera attachment for the iPad, but that’s a hassle and probably won’t be attached during those ideal, caption-worthy photo moments), though the $.99 price tag won’t break the bank for those who want to experiment with what they have. And, for those who can utilize Tap ‘n Cap to its fullest extent, the potential for laughter is endless, allowing you to create your own silly images with the tap of a finger, not computer necessary.
Tap ‘n Cap [iTunes Link] requires iPhone OS 3.1.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
