A few weeks ago, I wrote a review extolling the virtues of iSequence, a sophisticated new iPad app that allows musicians to construct full-scale songs from their touch screens. That app could be overwhelming to a first time user or a novice musician, but now soundTable fills that void by providing a simplified interface and learning curve for beginners wanting to create interesting electronic sequences.

As its name implies, all controls in soundTable are manipulated from one master screen. You can easily search sound banks to find the beats, synths and other sounds you want, then drag them to the middle of the screen – the “table” – where their volume, speed and direction can be manipulated using circular turntables that surround each individual sound. As you drag sounds to the main table, they “attach” themselves visually to a master control at the bottom of the screen. These attachment lines are actually representations of sound waves and they can be manipulated by attaching additional effects to them. Ultimately, you’ll likely have a half dozen or more mini turntables on screen at once, so it can get a little confusing and often difficult to fully control.

To be fair, though, the interface in soundTable is interesting and unique and easy enough to begin with. It would help if the developers included a comprehensive help file with the app, but you will have to settle for the info button, which merely describes what each set of buttons represents. That’s certainly enough to get you going, but as users continue playing with the app they are probably going to want more and better explanations.

The sounds available in soundTable are pretty standard, but fortunately the developers have included many, many more available for download free. You can sample each sound and decide if you want it, so you don’t have to litter your iPad’s precious drive space with unwanted sounds. Hopefully there will be additional sound packs released as the app reaches maturity. At only $0.99 for the app, I wouldn’t mind paying extra for more sounds.

Graphically, soundTable really impresses. With a variety of virtual turntables and sound waves going at one time, the interface of the app looks something like an art piece. It remains to be seen (and heard) what the most ambitious of users will be able to sonically do within the confines of the iPad’s screen.

At this point, soundTable is more of a toy than apps such as iSequence, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It represents a good first step for those just now venturing into the ambient unknown.

Battle Bears -1 Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: SkyVu Pictures, Inc.

Price: $.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

I loved Battle Bears: Zombies! Regardless of the fact that its (surreal, bizarre, yet lovable and oddly accommodating) game play was limited, due to the main character’s (Oliver) stationary position/inability to move, taking out onslaughts of bright, colorful, lovable bears with a unique, equally colorful arsenal of upgradeable weaponry provided me with countless hours of psychedelic bliss.

Sadly though, what Battle Bears: Zombies! possessed in originality, it lacked in length and my campaign to spread as much rainbow-colored head stuffing across the playing field died prematurely. That said, I was delighted when I learned of Battle Bears – 1. Would SkyVu improve upon its original formula or abandon it for a gaming experience that’s better, stronger, faster (and more colorful)? They certainly have the technology.

Battle Bears -1 is a prequel to Battle Bears: Zombies! which provides players with insight into how Oliver came to be stranded in enemy territory, forced to take out wave-after-wave of colorful, touch-feely bears, called Huggables.

The game’s hilarious intro (which, along with the rest of its animated cut scenes, pay homage to classic cult movie favorites, such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones) reveals the Battle Bears, in an effort to pay off their ship, have accepted a mission to a mysterious planet to recover mystical creatures for a client. During the mission, their ship is invaded by Huggables and the carnage game begins.

If nothing else, the developers at SkyVu are humorous and clever: The opening scene in the game mimics the original. However, once you move out from within the safety of your sandbags, everything changes; for the better.

Battle Bears – 1 takes place on the Battle Bear’s spaceship (the Ursa Major) and you play as Oliver, navigating throughout the ship eradicating it from waves of colorful Huggables and boss characters. In addition to retaining its colorful and vibrant game play, it now features an FPS perspective, with two control schemes, three modes of play: Campaign, Survival and Boss Trials and three difficulty levels: Warm Panda’s Milk (easy), Claws For Alarm (medium) and Barbearic (hard).

The default scheme displays two virtual analog sticks: the left (green), used for movement and the right (red) pulling double-duty for movement (navigating through areas with no enemies) and firing (navigating through areas with enemies).

In between the two sticks is a rectangular-shaped safety button, which, when active, allows players to move using both sticks without firing a weapon. While this could be somewhat irritating to some, I found it effective and enjoyable and had no problems adapting to it. If your safety is on and you enter a new room, it automatically disengages. Once a room is cleared, it will re-engage.

The second mode contains only the left, green analog stick. Instead of using a second analog stick on the right, players use their thumb to move and fire by touching the screen. The safety mechanism works the same for both modes. I really like this virtual control scheme; I played the game using both modes and found each effective, easy and fun to use.

The game’s display screen also features an in-game map, which will drop down as you clear a room, for help navigating throughout the ship.

The beginning of the game cleverly incorporates tutorial information into the game play. Once you learn the basics, which takes all of about 5 seconds, you’ll be blowing away furry foes en masse, ad nauseam.

The only faults I could find with this game is the redundant scenery of the Ursa Major’s bowels and the limited/lack of weaponry Oliver has access to, especially when compared with Battle Bears: Zombies!. Oliver’s new weapons are still fun to use, however, and the intense game play (you’ll be swarmed by different colors/types of Huggables) more than makes up for the above.

Speaking of Huggables, they’re still very colorful and come in different sizes and attack types. While playing this game, you’ll come to realize that their attack strategy/motto is “There’s Safety in Numbers,” as they will SWARM all over you if you fail to mow them down with extreme prejudice, so don’t be conservative with your weaponry/power ups; apply liberally as needed.

Despite its flaws, Battle Bears – 1 is a successful, improved prequel to the original. Its game play, saturated with intense action, colorful graphics and humor, is fun and satisfying. Regardless of whether or not you played the first version, you’ll no doubt enjoy this game, which is a virtual pot of gold at the end of SkyVu’s rainbow

ROK Lingo Translation

($0.99 – Limited Time)

Version 2
Review – “Multi Language Translator that speaks your translations, easy to use.”

App developer: Rok Media
Website: http://www.rokent.com/

ROK Media has created a simple but very useful App that translates any text into several languages and recites them aloud on your iPhone for traveling, communication, business – you name it.

ROK Translate 1 200x300 ROK Lingo Translation iPhone App ReviewThis App could not be simpler. Insert your text on top, select which language to translate it into and the text appears below, with the option to hear the App speak it to you. The languages included in version 2 are English, French, Spanish, German, Turkish and Catalan.

From what I could tell each Language had its own built-in female voice that read the translated text, however because I’m not as fluent in French or Spanish as I’d like to be, I couldn’t really tell if the pronunciations were correct or not. It’s probably safe to assume that a native speaker would be able to figure out what you are saying by you mimicking the voice – or you could always play the audio for whomever you’re trying to communicate with. Although, you could always show them the translated text as well. So there’s a multitude of uses for this program.

ROK Translate 2 200x300 ROK Lingo Translation iPhone App Review

An addition use that I didn’t realize until much later was that English is one of the included Languages that you can Translate to. Meaning, that if you find some street sign, instructions, or information in one of the supported languages you can translate it back to English with this App too.

ROK Translate 3 200x300 ROK Lingo Translation iPhone App Review

Also, fantastic news for speakers of the other languages, because this is the perfect App for traveling to English Speaking countries – the audio speaking voice of the English Speaker is crystal clear – as good as any Text to Audio I’ve ever heard.

Right now Rok has the Lingo Translation App on sale for 1/2 off – only $0.99 so you should pick it up while now, while it’s still cheap. You never know when you’ll need it, especially if you travel often!

Martian Swarm - iPhone App Review

Martian Swarm ($0.99)
Version 1.0
Review – “Fast Paced, Color-Tap, Martian Invader Game”

App developer: Blue Fusion Technologies
Website: http://www.bluefusiongames.com/

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a new game App that does something different, has a different game play, or simply is a new idea to the App Marketplace. I was surprised by, and totally impressed by this App.

martianswarm 1 200x300 Martian Swarm iPhone App ReviewThere’s a fantastic tutorial when you begin, explaining the game play, which is that you need to press the right colors, and launch your colors in order to defeat the Martian Invaders before they reach you. Obvious homage to Space Invaders with a tricky and fun twist. The tutorial was detailed and explained everything from how to defend against single-color ships, and multicolor ships. You have special weapons that you can use to either freeze the attackers, or by demolishing an entire section (although these special weapons will not work with each other, which is fair.)

martianswarm 4 200x300 Martian Swarm iPhone App ReviewOther than the fantastic graphics (which I’ve stated before, and will state again, are a rarity sometimes in 99 cent apps), the game play is smooth and easy to do. On the point of the graphics, and design, it’s an obvious throwback to retro 70’s style games and I think it suits this particular game, and this genre in general great.

Something else that impressed me about this App is that it contains 40 levels. Forty. This app was only launched a few days ago and already in contains more levels than most Apps in this price range which have had months, if not years of additions and updates.

martianswarm 3 200x300 Martian Swarm iPhone App ReviewThe levels get progressively more difficult, but that’s a given. The game is intuitive in the same way the guitar-hero, tap-tap revolution is, which is a welcome change from regular shooter games. This game is definitely geared at people who wouldn’t regularly pick up a ‘Space’ style game, and I think that anyone who enjoys combo or color-tap related games would enjoy this just as much.

Additionally the App features OpenFeint, a welcome addition to any game on the iPad. Although I’ve been using games with OpenFeint for a while, I’ve never bothered to actually sign-up or keep track of my high-scores through it, this game might change that as it is so much fun I find I’m wanting to play it more and more, I should keep track of my progress.

Please do check this one out – it’s only a dollar and I think that if it even sounds like it will appeal to you, you won’t be disappointed.

A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery – iPhone App is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery ($0.99)
Version 1.0
Review – “Tasty, Tasty Bacon Recipes.”

App developer: Jada Brazil
Website: http://thecafeteria.net/?page_id=21

geekguidebacon 5 200x300 A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery iPhone App

Bacon, it’s what’s for Breakfast. Right? Well, not it can be for Lunch, Dinner, Snack – even Dessert. The Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery (formerly just an eBook) will guide you through one of thirteen different recipes from Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs to Caramel Bacon Apple Muffins, and beyond.

geekguidebacon 3 200x300 A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery iPhone AppDesigned very simply, this App doesn’t have much interactivity. But what it makes up for in style, it has in substance in abundance. The witty, joking commentary and instructions will keep you entertained while you fry up your most favorite food. They’re clear, and concise, which is helpful. There are photos nearly every step of the way (Although I would have liked if they were able to go full-screen, for better viewing).

geekguidebacon 6 200x300 A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery iPhone AppYou’ll get all the information for ingredients you need for each recipe, including a photo On this page you will find the total volumes available by English and Metric but be warned, all of the recipes strictly in English. Unfortunately there is no way to export this list, email it or create a ’shopping list’ for the items you’ll need. I would love to see this feature added in an update.

As for the recipes themselves – they are entirely useful. While you might not think that you need instructions for a Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog – this recipe actually includes instructions on how to fry up some peppers and onions and a helpful suggestion regarding Alcohol;

geekguidebacon 2 200x300 A Geeks Guide to Bacon Cookery iPhone App

While it’s not the best designed App, very basic, and I do wish there were more recipes, perhaps this is coming in a future update. In the meantime, however, it’s only 99 cents, and if you love Bacon (and who doesn’t), you should definitely check it out.

Leap Sheep! HD Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Turtle Rock Studios, Inc.
Price: $.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.94 out of 5 stars

Leap Sheep! HD is a casual, pick-up-and-play game where shepherds players are tasked with helping their never-ending flock of cute, talented, little sheep over a fence, to virtual freedom. To do so, players simply tap each sheep as it approaches the fence to make it jump, then tap it again, at the peak of the sheep’s leap, to make the sheep execute a trick (a flip, which is no small feat for even a sheep). Doing so successfully will increase the player’s score multiplier and fill the ram gauge, located along the right of the screen, which produces a ram each time it’s filled. Failure to do so, will cause the sheep to become stuck at the fence. That said, payers are awarded points for successfully leaping over the fence, but completing tricks are crucial, as failure to fill the ram gauge as the game progresses will undoubtedly result in a screen filled with stuck sheep. Once the sheep become backed up to the edge of the (left) screen, it’s game over.

As the ram gauge completely fills, players are rewarded with rams, who can be used to force stuck sheep (lone sheep or an entire row), i.e. sheep who weren’t launched soon enough, etc., over the fence, clearing the screen for more game play. Ensuring your ram queue is full will ultimately determine your success/progression in the game, as the longer into the game one progresses, the number of sheep crossing the screen at the same time increases, requiring players to multi-task their way to a high/higher score. Sheep bounce across the screen in three different areas (top, middle and bottom), at varying speeds/bounce as the game progresses.

Leap Sheep! HD’s graphics and sound are not what you would expect from/within a barnyard: Clean, crisp and colorful. The game play can be a tripe frustrating (rimshot, please), as sheep must be at the peak of their jump in order to successfully pull off a trick and the screen/touch controls are not as responsive as they could be. Be that as it may, this is pretty much the only flaw I could find with the game play/game play mechanics.

Leap Sheep! HD uses Plus+ for Leaderboards/Awards/Achievements, which help add to the game’s longevity, but not much. While the game is cute, colorful and fun to play, it lacks essential elements which would add to it’s replay value, such as difficulty levels and additional content.

Overall, Leap Sheep! HD is a fun game in small spurts, but its inhibited game play/lack of features won’t win it any Blue Ribbons. Even so, it’s a fun, albeit short, ride.

Suggestiny – iPhone App Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Suggestiny icon Suggestiny iPhone App Review

Suggestiny ($0.99)
Version 1.1.0
Review – “Take the power of suggestion with you anywhere!”

App developer: Mark Kenski
Website: http://www.suggestiny.com

Although I’m usually not the type to like gimmicky sort of Apps, I gave Suggestiny a try anyways. I think the concept here is simple, and I think the execution is well done, I really think that a lot of people might really enjoy this App, and I think that it’s a neat idea, with a positive message.

Suggestiny 1 200x300 Suggestiny iPhone App Review

Suggestiny offers you helpful, encouraging words or phrases, quickly flashed across the screen in a series, so that you receive the liminal (not subliminal – as it’s actually visible) message and use this constant feedback or sensory input to effect your day.

Suggestiny 4 200x300 Suggestiny iPhone App Review Now, this isn’t some sort of magic trip, I think that most people understand, and know it’s obvious that viewing positive messages help change your mood, or increase your confidence, or even help you de-stress. Why else would motivational posters exist, am I right?

Suggestiny 3 200x300 Suggestiny iPhone App Review

The App is pretty customizable, you can edit the font or color for your words – in addition to the background itself. Although it comes with a preset number of phrases, you can add your own – and really personalize it. You can also set the duration of the words on screen, as well as the duration of the interval between words. Now – this is where I do have a suggestion for the developer. The maximum duration of time that you can get one word on screen is 400ms (or just under 1/2 a second), while the maximum duration between words can be 3 seconds. I honestly think that more people would use this App simply to have the positive reinforcement if the duration of the word on-screen could be extended to something more like 3-5 Seconds.

Here’s a quick video from the developer showing how the App functions:

While, the flashes of all the messages are great to try and work on a non-conscious level, why not provide the user the option to outright have this App be their at-desk motivation without the (sometimes overwhelming) flashes of near Subliminal messages? I understand the concept of the App is just that, using the quick-flashes, and I think that this App really is unique for it – but if it offered both – it could be amazing. Ideally, if one could also listen to their music than this would be pretty sweet, too. I can see myself having the App running while at my speaker-docks at my desk just telling me great things about myself. That would be pretty nice.

Review – “Feature Rich, Flight Info – A Must Have for travelers.”

App developer: FlightView
Wesbite: www.flightview.com

I go on vacation pretty once a year, and when I do, my mother is obsessed with watching the progression of my flight, especially on my return flight as she is usually in charge of picking me up at the airport. If you travel more often the likelihood of you having some one wanting to keep tabs on your flights is much higher, luckily Flight View is a solution to having mobile info about any flights.

Flight View 1 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

I think that most people may already be familiar with the website version, but now earlier this month, FlightView launched an App with many of the same features, information and updates, only directly for your iPhone, and it’s fantastic.

Flight View 2 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

This App is Feature Rich. Let’s start with finding the flights you want to track. Of course you could could simply add the airline (by name or airline code) and flight number, but I’m very impressed that it also includes the option to search for flights.

Flight View 7 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

You will have to be connected to the Internet for this, but within this search you can find flights via city or airport search and date of departure, it will give you a full list of flights on that route.

This is handy for two reasons, obviously if you don’t know the exact flight details, but also if you wanted to actually look for a flight in the next few days to somewhere, it includes all airlines on that route including departure and arrival times.

Flight View 8 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

Once you’ve selected your flight, you can save it and begin getting real-time data about it. You can check if an upcoming departure is postponed, you can find out the arrival and terminal information, and (personally this is my favorite feature) watch the flight in map-view. Again, you do need an Internet connection to get current flight information obviously, but once saved the basic details of any flight are viewable anytime.

Flight View 4 200x300 Flight View iPhone App ReviewFlight View 3 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

Flight View 5 200x300 Flight View iPhone App Review

Another unexpected but very helpful feature as seen below, is that it offers real-time information about flight delays at airports, nationwide, on a map, even.

I can’t imagine how useful this would be for business travelers, and family members of anyone taking flights. Even if this App did nothing more than import and save your flight information it would be worth the price, only $0.99, unbelievable. I highly recommend his App, even if you onion fly a few times a year it would be incredibly useful. This is one of those Apps I would have never thought to look for, but will always keep handy, try it out!

Review – “Easy and Detailed App for Students”

App developer: InterThread Software

class notes 1 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App ReviewStudents these days are busier than ever, lucky for them there’s an App to keep all of their schedules, contacts, assignments and notes organized. I wish I had this App when I was still in school.

Class Notes is a fantastically detailed App that offers a easy and informative way to stay on top of your timetables, notes, assignment and tests. This feature-rich App is so much more than just a To-Do list, or a Calendar, it integrates all of your school information into one easy to read, and easy to update place.

class notes 2 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review
You first set it up by adding your schedule, and any/all information you have about the classes you’re taking. A great feature is that you need not only schedule one semester at a time, if you have your entire year already planned out, you can go ahead and add everything at once.

class notes 3 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

For each course you enter there is a host of options to add the information you might need on a daily basis, such as the course website, professor/teacher contact information, upcoming assignment and tests that may be scheduled. Additionally you can have an ongoing To-Do list for study prep or to remember any other important details that don’t fit in the above mentioned categories or sections.

class notes 6 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

You can review each course individually, or view all upcoming assignments or tests. Although it might take some time to first enter the information once it’s in there it is super easy to navigate (by search) and add new information, such as course notes. Also, the App will alert you for when you have an upcoming due date or test.

class notes 7 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

I can see this App being useful for TA’s, teachers at all levels and other learning professionals as well. You can keep your own work schedule with upcoming tasks, assignments or contact information for the students. At this price, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. The App even has a backup feature, so if you accidentally delete or remove something you can restore from a previous session and get all the information back, a fantastic option built right in.

If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to keep all of your classes organizes and sorted, whether you are a teacher or student I highly recommend picking up Class Notes.
