Review – “Easy and Detailed App for Students”

class notes 1 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App ReviewStudents these days are busier than ever, lucky for them there’s an App to keep all of their schedules, contacts, assignments and notes organized. I wish I had this App when I was still in school.

Class Notes is a fantastically detailed App that offers a easy and informative way to stay on top of your timetables, notes, assignment and tests. This feature-rich App is so much more than just a To-Do list, or a Calendar, it integrates all of your school information into one easy to read, and easy to update place.

class notes 2 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review
You first set it up by adding your schedule, and any/all information you have about the classes you’re taking. A great feature is that you need not only schedule one semester at a time, if you have your entire year already planned out, you can go ahead and add everything at once.

class notes 3 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

For each course you enter there is a host of options to add the information you might need on a daily basis, such as the course website, professor/teacher contact information, upcoming assignment and tests that may be scheduled. Additionally you can have an ongoing To-Do list for study prep or to remember any other important details that don’t fit in the above mentioned categories or sections.

class notes 6 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

You can review each course individually, or view all upcoming assignments or tests. Although it might take some time to first enter the information once it’s in there it is super easy to navigate (by search) and add new information, such as course notes. Also, the App will alert you for when you have an upcoming due date or test.

class notes 7 200x300 Class Notes iPhone App Review

I can see this App being useful for TA’s, teachers at all levels and other learning professionals as well. You can keep your own work schedule with upcoming tasks, assignments or contact information for the students. At this price, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. The App even has a backup feature, so if you accidentally delete or remove something you can restore from a previous session and get all the information back, a fantastic option built right in.

If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to keep all of your classes organizes and sorted, whether you are a teacher or student I highly recommend picking up Class Notes.

Four Card Golf (99¢)
Version 1.0
Review – “Fun and challenging card game on the go”

App developer: Bruce McLaren
Website: http://sites.google.com/site/fourcardgolf

fourcard 1 200x300 Four Card Golf iPhone App Review

I’ve never played the card game Golf before, so going in I had to spend a few moments in the instructions screen figuring out the object and game play of this particular App. Luckily, the developer at the foresight to include detailed, but easy to understand, help and instructions on how to play Golf.

fourcard 2 200x300 Four Card Golf iPhone App Review

fourcard 3 200x300 Four Card Golf iPhone App ReviewBasically it’s a card-swap game, where the object is to end up with the least number of points. Makes sense, and is rather easy. However, the game has several levels of difficultly, ranging from very fun, to really challenging. This App will help keep your memory sharp as the game play progresses, especially as at any time one of the other ‘Players’ can end the round.

Luckily, the App is created beautifully, the design and layout, the graphics and speed are all ideally suited to a medium-paced card game (however for those who need more time, or are quick thinkers, you can adjust the game play speed. One round of 9 ‘Holes’ can last from 5-10 minutes, I’d say. Ideally suited for a quick game during busy commutes or waiting in line at the post office, or what have you. For longer rounds, you can select the full 18 Holes and enjoy yourself for much longer.

fourcard 5 200x300 Four Card Golf iPhone App Review

fourcard 4 200x300 Four Card Golf iPhone App ReviewAs it turns out, on my very first round I didn’t fare too badly, and came in second place. So although this game a little more complex than the average Solitaire game, it’s pretty easy to pick up on quickly. I’m sure after a few more tries I’ll come up with better strategies and hopefully my memory will be sharper too.

I mention Solitaire because this game is ideally suited to all of those Solitaire players out there who are looking for something a bit different, and for only a dollar, you really can’t go wrong here. The only feature lacking I’d say is a Multi-player element, where you can pass the iPhone around for others to be included instead of always having to play the ‘Computer’. There are lots of card games on the App Store to choose from, but if you’re interested in something that will keep your memory sharp and will actually challenge you again and again. You won’t get bored.

Holy Robinator!

Holy Robinator! is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

I’m rather fond of cheesy little ’shout a catchphrase’ apps, and there is no better way to end a Tuesday than to give out a bunch of free codes for the amusing Holy Robinator! by Little Bird Applictions.

Holy Robinator! comes with 60 wildly amusing “Holy” statements, all of them soundbites of classic Batman and Robin episodes. Ranging from “Holy contributing to the delinquency of minors!” (a personal favorite) to “Holy rats in a trap!” to “Holy schizophrenia!”, this app is chock full of giggle-out-loud sound bytes. Enjoy your Tuesday :D (Holy chocolate eclair!)

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

What is the deal with pigs and dragons invading the app store? The irony here, and it’s rich, is that pork and dragon meat are both delicious. So, we love to play games containing cute animals that happen to be delicious and/or borderline retarded (Jumpy the Pig, the game’s protagonist, apparently didn’t get the memo from Super Turbo Action Pig).

If you’re looking for a deep, complex game, you’d better look elsewhere. Pig Rush wear’s its heart on its sleeve, making no bones about being a casual pick-up-and-play title. It’s a platform endurance challenge featuring Jumpy the Pig, who’s finally managed to pull an Oliver Twist and escape the confines of his farm (=slaughterhouse), subsequently running for dear life in an attempt to get as far away from impending doom as possible. What’s really funny, is that watching Jumpy the Pig provides you with a sense of urgency; he really looks like he’s hauling ham, running for his life! Somebody save him!

During his quest, Jumpy encounters deep ravines, fire and moving platforms (as if simply running wasn’t hard enough). Fear not, however, as grabbing a hovering fire hat will protect Jumpy from fire. There is also a power-up available which turns Jumpy into a giant, invincible pig!

Pig Rush sports colorful graphics and a peppy sound track/sound effects. Its game play is very similar to Canabalt, adding the ability to double jump and power-ups. Controlling Jumpy literally couldn’t be easier. Players simply tap low on the screen to jump low (the lower you tap, the lower you jump) and high on the screen to jump high (the higher you tap, the higher you jump). Double tapping will result in a double jump (low or high or a combo of both).

As stated earlier, during the game, players will encounter several obstacles, such as gaps (remember, you are on a floating platform) and fire and power-ups, such as a fire hat, which protects you from fire and a pig icon which turns Jumpy invincible for a short time. Also scattered throughout each level are bees (yes, bees), which represent the scores of other players. Knock them out of the sky for additional points. Pig Rush also supports OpenFeint Leaderboards/Achievements, which add to the game’s replay value.

Shaking your iDevice while at the main menu will activate the game’s Easter Egg: A Christmas themed Pig Rush. This mode changes Jumpy the Pig to Jumpy the Reindeer and is set against a snow-filled backdrop, complete with rocking Christmas-music sountrack. The game is still the same, it just looks different. But, it’s a nice surprise.

Pig Rush’s colorful graphics and peppy sound track/effects easily provide for an immersive game play experience. It’s these elements, combined with the simplicity and responsiveness/accuracy of the control scheme, that make this game a wiener.

The Impossible Game

The Impossible Game is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

You’ll pretty much suck no matter what.

The Bible says that on the seventh day God rested. Well I like to believe that on the eighth day he created The Impossible Game and then to fool everyone he jumped forward through time to present day and published it in the app store under the name Flukedude. But don’t let the title of this game fool you! This game is not impossible; just insanely difficult. It’s honestly more like The Insanely Difficult Game of Trial and Error. Trial and error with an awesome soundtrack. With that said, If you’re the type of gamer that is easily frustrated and discouraged by games then this is not the game for you. However, if you are the type of gamer that takes pleasure in the otherworldly challenges offered by difficult games, then this is the game for you.

The object of The Impossible Game is too keep your orange square moving forward for as long as you can until you reach the end of the game. To do this you must avoiding the spikes on the ground and jump from square to square to avoid the solid black pools.  Just tap the screen to jump and hold your finger on the screen to keep jumping. What makes this game frustrating is that you have to start over from the very beginning when you “crash”. The thing is that you will fail within the first five seconds. I did it and ever single one of my room mates who played this game did too.

After the first 20 crashes, I was surprisingly not bored. It wasn’t until I crashed for the one hundredth and something time that  I started getting pissed off.  Anything other than pure luck or perfect timing will make you fail a hundred thousand times. Luckily, they included a practice mode. With this you can fail a hundred more times without having to go all the way back to the beginning! All in all this is a great party app but it’s extreme difficulty will turn a lot of casual gamers off.

A pretty average load screen.
The gateway to a wondrous place of hurt and failure!
You check your stats and post your crappy stats online!
I was about five minutes in after I took this screen shot.
Don't put your practice flags right next to a spike because when you die that's where you'll spawn.

Pencil Toss

Pencil Toss is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

DSJP Enterprises’ Pencil Toss is one of those deceptively simple games that you start playing and before you know it, 5 minutes have passed.  Then another five.  And five more.  Simply put, you lose track of time all because you want to get better at playing it.

If the name is reminiscent of Paper Toss, it’s for a good reason.  Although the two games have different developers, they are similar in the respect that they both take place in office environments.  With the first game, you’re trying to toss balls of paper into a wastebasket.  With this one, you’re tossing pencils up into the air trying to get them to stick in the ceiling tile.  Now, you might think it’s an easy enough task, but you would be mistaken.  There’s wind and arcs and ceiling vents and- wouldn’t you just know it? – people tend to get a little annoyed with you when your flying pencil just happens to hit their computer, land in their coffee, or poke them in the eye.

Pencil Toss has a Target Practice level and three difficulty modes (Easy, Medium, and Hard).  Of the two, I rather liked Target Practice.  It’s a bit like darts, except the dartboard is on the ceiling.  You might think that, like Paper Toss, this would be an easy game to play.  You might think that, but you would be wrong.  I’ve tried each of the difficulty levels, and what I’ve noticed is that the ceiling tile is narrower from Easy to Hard.  That said, though, the Easy level presented me with more than enough of a challenge to be honest.  Hard is…well, it’s hard.

So, if you’re looking for a nice little app to fill in those odd moments where you find yourself needing to pass the time, Pencil Toss will not disappoint.  It’s much more difficult than you might think.

Retro Paddle

Retro Paddle is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

You have to respect the classics.

Retro Paddle is Richard Fennema’s tribute to Pong for the iPhone! Although insanely simplistic in nature, Retro Paddle serves more to remind to the world how far the gaming world has come since Pong’s console release in 1974 (roughly three years before home computers were available to the public). This ridiculously simple concept was something the world had never seen before: at home console gaming! Pong, with sales totaling over 40,000,000 in it’s first year, was a massive hit and the public ate it up. This simple game sparked a series of innovations that led to cartridge based gaming and the decision to port classics like Space Invaders from the arcade to the TV screen.

After the console gaming crash of 83′ and 84′, the general public avoided console gaming until gaming legends Nintendo and Sega hit the scene in the late 80’s with the NES and the SG-1000. From there, it’s all history and the world’s youth would never be the same because of it. In fact, Pong indirectly set in motion – albeit  an extremely indirect set of motions- a line of events that would ultimately lead to the creation of IAR and for that we pay tribute!  It’s hard to believe that the at home gaming phenomenon came with instructions that said: “Avoid missing ball for high score.”

Retro Paddle has the same basic rules. To win… you must not miss the ball. Simple and to the point. The only difference is that Retro Paddle has some cool new features; you can change the control settings from touch to tilt and adjust the difficulty! Not much in comparison to other games currently in the app store but enough to satisfy the retro gamer. So if you’re a nostalgic gamer like me, then chances are you’d probably enjoy Retro Paddle! You can purchase this game for $.99 in the app store.

Real gamers play Retro Paddle with the difficulty all the way up!
Personally, I think the tilt controls are better than the touch.
The fight is on!
The fight is still on!
Your score is on the left and the paddle you control is on top.

Doodle Cannon War

Doodle Cannon War is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Doodle Cannon Wars! Now with more vitamin D!

I’m going to start this review right off the bat by saying that I absolutely love Doodle Cannon War! I haven’t been this in engrossed in an iPhone game since I purchased Doodle Jump (a different game from a different developer) a couple months back. Anyone who’s ever played a video game can sense when a game just feels right when they play it. Doodle Cannon War has that tangible feel only a few games I’ve played on the iPhone have. The guys and gals at infiworks have truly created a game so fun and challenging that if it weren’t for the game crippling glitch in level nine, chances are, I probably would have bought it! I’ll tell you more about that later in the review.

The object of the game is to blow up the skulls in each level using the bombs in your cannon. It sounds simple but to get your bomb anywhere near the skulls in each level you’ll have to angle your cannon just right and make sure the power behind your shot doesn’t fire your bomb too hard or too soft. This requires a steady hand, logical thinking, and some luck. To get a good score you’ll have to blow up the skulls using the least amount of bombs in as little time as possible.

Like most games on the iPhone, Doodle Cannon Wars has a bit of a control problem. It only uses a single touch to control the power and angle of the cannon. This can be a bit of a pain when you’re trying really hard to get the angle just right because as long as your finger is pressed on the screen the power behind your shot will continue to go up. This means that you’ll have to quickly judge the angle and power when you’re taking a shot. For the sake of making the game less reliant on luck and more on skill, I think the game would benefit greatly from separating these two actions.

Of course, separating the angle control from the power control will do absolutely nothing as long as the glitch in level nine is still there crippling this game! As soon as level nine starts, the frame rate slows down to a crawl, making the game virtually unplayable. That’s over 40 levels of Doodle Cannon War that won’t be able to be played! I would wait until infiworks fixes this bug before purchasing this app.

A riveting menu screen! Now if only you could hear the awesome background music!
Sadly, level nine will be the farthest I will be able to get until the next update.
Maybe I'm just plain bad at this game but it took me over a hundred tries to beat this...
I pretty much owned this level
It's about as difficult as it looks... Only those blocks were moving when I was playing.

The Price is Right 2010

The Price is Right 2010 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

“Come on down!  You’re the next contestant on The Price is Right!”

If you’ve ever wanted to hear those words directed to you, now’s your chance.  Ludia’s The Price is Right 2010 is as close as you can get to the real thing as most of us ever will.  Short of going to Burbank, California, that is.  But even then, there’s no guarantee that you’ll hear your name called to run down that aisle to participate in the classic game show.

This is a nice game.  The beginning is reminiscent of The Sims 3 (for iPhone) in that the player can choose and customize a 3D avatar, including gender, general appearance, wardrobe, attitude, and even name.

The player is offered the choice of playing a three strike game or the original 60-minute classic.  All the elements you’ve come to know and love with the TV game, whether with Bob Barker (who most of you know as the old guy who beat up Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore) or Drew Carey.  There’s Contestants’ Row, the Pricing Game, the Big Wheel, and the Showcase Showdown.

The player gets six attempts to make it past Contestants’ Row and from there, it plays exactly like the television game show. There are even actual clips featuring real pricing objects (jewelry, appliances, electronics, and other furniture) and what used to be known way back in the day as Barkers Beauties, the women who demonstrate the items up for bid.

If estimating the price of an item is not your strong suit (as I’ve learned is mine), then you will struggle to advance in this game.  Simply making it to Contestants’ Row is the beginning of the game, not the end.  In order to win, you must triumph over each of the rounds.  As you progress, you’ll unlock additional games along the way.  Personally, I’m lookng forward to unlocking Cliffhangers.  That was always my favorite part of the growing up.  Well, that and trying to predict who would win the new car.

There is a multiplayer mode (aka Party mode) to the game, so you can challenge up to three of your friends to a game as well.  And The Price is Right 2010 is on sale for just 99 cents, making it a great bargain.  I found TPIR 2010 to be an enjoyable game, once I was happy to play many times.

I’m still waiting to win that new car, though.
