I’ve been a fan of Jet Car Stunts, the single-player rocket-car agility game from True Axis, for awhile now. Since the game has recently gotten an upgrade from the devs, one that has made the already fun game an even better addition to your iOS device, now is certainly the time for those who have not yet found this little gem to try it out.

In Jet Car Stunts, you take control of a red, rocket-powered car and jump, fly, spin, and skid your way across a series of floating trick tracks. You have two options to begin: play one of 25 Platforming tracks (my favorites), where you are free to execute the most awesome stunts; or tackle one of the 10 Time Trial tracks, where you must execute more linear stunts as you complete laps. Playing each track and performing each jump requires a mix of speed and accuracy, and the fun comes in trying to get as accurate as you can, while still maintaining speed. There’s no joy in being an old fuddy-duddy on these tracks.

Executing a game like this requires solid design and controls, and True Axis scores on both counts. The car handles well with accelerometer steering and touch accelleration, if perhaps just a touch unrealistically; and once you get used to it you’ll be able to send it more or less where you want it to be. You’ll rarely be frustrated by a good jump being soured by poor touch controls. And since there’s a lot of different difficulty settings, there’s something to please both casual players and dedicated gamers.

The fun gameplay is accompanied by some truly excellent visuals. The polygonal, cell-shaded tracks are minimalist and eye-catching, while the sky-high backdrop casts the whole thing in sharp, bright sunlight (and adds an element of highwire flavor). While some players might find things a little too plain for their tastes, I thought it fit the game just fine.

If you’ve never heard of Jet Car Stunts before, now’s the time to try it. With an iOS4 upgrade and the chance to download additional tracks, it’s a good game that has gotten even better.

Rocket Racing League Review

Several years ago I was an avid follower of the Ansari X Prize. Since SpaceShipOne took the trophy in that competition, I’d honestly lost track of the whole thing. Then Rocket Racing League showed up, a game promoting a proposed airborne high-speed plane race from the same folks who backed the X Prize. The League itself hasn’t gotten off of the ground yet, but their new app attempts to offer a good-looking window into this possible future phenomenon by way of a standard arcade racer game.

To begin with, I must point out that this app is, first and foremost, a marketing message for the Rocket Racing League. I won’t call it an advertisement, since there’s no real product to be sold yet. But the game opens with a minute-long promotional video and it prominently features a section to follow news and events in the real-world League. It’s an app designed to deliver more than just a game.

As marketing tie-ins go, it’s far from the worst I’ve ever played. The game is a pretty standard arcade racer, akin to a dozen similar games of comparable quality and difficulty in the App Store. You control a rocket racer with either the accelerometer or a virtual joystick, wending your way through marked courses against other rocket racers, striving for victory. The action is fast, the AI opponents tough, and the courses sufficiently challenging.

Also, this game looks great. Marketing tie-ins are oftentimes exercises in lowest common denominator game design, but Rocket Racing League clearly put some effort into their graphics. The landscape details are great, right down to the sleek lens flares that bounce off your racer when you fly towards the sun. They wanted this game to look like something that could actually happen.

Unfortunately, the racing itself is not terribly realistic. For example, when you impact a canyon wall or another racer, you don’t suffer damage or explode; you merely bounce and lose a little momentum. Nothing in the game, in fact, will crash your rocket racer. There’s also the collectible stars and rubies you can chase down for points, an element that feels more Mario Kart than serious racer.

If you’re looking to add another arcade racking title to your iPhone or iPod touch, you could do worse than Rocket Racing League. While it’s neither the most realistic nor the most engaging title available, it’s good enough to satisfy racing fans and those with an interest in this new racing venture.

Core Damage Spins You Right ‘Round

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a sucker for an app that can use the iPhone’s accelerometer in interesting ways, and Core Damage by Comrade Software is just such an app! This isn’t a game that you can just pick up and play without first reading the instructions, because the control interface is like no other game I’ve seen. It takes the classic brick-breaker genre, puts it in a circle, and then relies on you to physically turn the iPhone in order to move the “shield” (the brick-breaker’s paddle) around the nuclear core (the part you don’t want to hit).

This is a great game, but it’s also very frantic if you can’t get a handle on the controls. Before you know it, you’re turning your iPhone upside down and then sideways and all the way back around. Without good hand/eye coordination, and a good grip on your iPhone, you may as well just be throwing it up in the air and let it land where it may. That being said, you will never see a game like this on any other console. It’s a lot of fun desperately turning your iPhone round, trying your best to protect the core.

The idea is that you’re bouncing around this “Very Large Atom” to clear away nuclear waste around the edges of the container, all the while protecting the core from the very same VLA. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a nuclear reactor or a nuclear engine or what, but the graphics go a long way toward selling the idea. There’s a bit of a 1950’s feel to the game, and the old school digital score keeper and the flip-digit life indicator are just plain cool.

Like I said, I love games that use the accelerometer in unique and interesting ways – and maybe I’m a little bit biased toward that end – but Core Damage is a really fun and addictive game. Well worth a look!

Core Damage requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later and is compatible with both iPhone and iPod Touch.
