REVIEW – “Check out the sharpest looking baseball game in the App Store!”

There have been several baseball games released in the app store, but very few of them have tackled a truly 3D environment like this one does,  and none of them has pulled it off as sharply as Derek Jeter Real Baseball has!  Unfortunately this game does not have MLB sponsorship, so most of the players and all of the team names are not names of actually players/teams in the Marko Leagues.

When you open up this app you are greeted by a sharp looking intro video and then taken to a splash screen. < Touching anywhere on the screen will take you to the main menu where you can start a “Quick Game,” select a “Game Mode” such as season, playoffs or home run contest.  The final main menu button is the “Options” button.  This screen allows you to set basic options such as language settings whether or not the game will play music and sound effects.

There are several different game modes to select from.   You can start a season, which can consist of several different amounts of games up to a full season of 162 games!  You can also play just the playoffs or compete in a Home Run contest!  Along the way you can collect several different trophies for achieving various things such as winning the Home Run Derby!

Once you start a game you will see a bar across the top of the screen which has various stats such as your current score, amount of outs, what inning it is and whether there are people on base.  In the upper right corner you will see a “pause” button which pauses the game and takes you to a menu where you can set in-game options, substitute players and/or exit to the main menu.

The basic gameplay is very simple.  If this is your first time playing this game you will see a brief tutorial on how to bat and pitch as you begin them.  Batting is extremely easy, all you have to do is tap the screen to swing.  There is not really a system for locating where you will swing, you just have to start your swing at the correct time.

Pitching is a little more complicated and was one of my favorite features of this app.  If all of the rest of the game paid as much attention to detail and worked as seamlessly as pitching this would be one of the most elite baseball games I have ever played on a mobile platform!  To pitch you first select your type of pitch from a list of four options, then you tilt the accelerometer to locate your pitch, and then finally you touch the screen to set how hard you will throw the pitch and how accurate the pitch will be.

The quick play feature works without a hitch and is very quick to get started.  Season mode and playoff mode are also a lot of fun, but unfortunately I found a few small glitches in the stat-tracking.  This will not be a big deal to most people but to baseball junkies like myself it a little irritating.

For the most part gameplay feels natural.  The three things that I would say probably need a little work are the artificial intelligence engine, the delay some of the animations cause in doing things like advancing to the next base and/or throwing the baseball,  and the third thing I would change is just how fast fielders can throw in this game.  There were way too many times where I got a hit into the outfield, only to find out that the outfielder was able to throw it back into the infield and get me out before I could reach first base!

Despite having a few small things that could use a little work, this game still manages to be one of the best mobile baseball games in the App Store.  The graphics and sound are amazing, and the positives of this app far outweigh these little nuisances that I found.  If you are looking for a good sports game for your iPhone or iPod Touch, I would highly recommend that you head to App Store and grab this app for just $4.99!
