Classics is an extremely impressive book library for your iPod Touch and iPhone.

Classics is streamlined, quick, and doesn’t lag, unlike many other book apps. The library to choose from is pretty unique, ranging from The Call of the Wild to The Art of War, and the selection is pretty beefy, clocking in about 20 full-length works.

The books are a joy to flip through, and the app has a set of rather neat features (bookmarks, reading multiple books at once) that set it apart from other mobile bookshelves.

Andrew Kaz and Phill Ryu created an impressive app that’s already a favorite in the app store, and is a fantastic deal right now.

One thing I have definitely seen a lot of is Bible applications in the App Store. While there have been a lot of them released for free, none of them have really compared to this new entry from Logos. Logos is already well known for its desktop Bible study software, and now they have attempted to take some of those amazing tools and port them directly to your iPhone or iPod Touch!

When you open this app for the first time you will be prompted to login to your Logos account if you have one. If not, you should probably go and create a free account because you will have access to some extra free resources if you do. One of the best features of this app is that if you already own a copy of any package of Logos 4 you will also be able to view a large portion of your premium content for free in this app! All you have to do is make sure you are logged into your account!

I was impressed right away with the load time of the app. I have seen several advanced bible study tools that take quite a while to load but this one only slowed when it had to access the internet to download things. When you open it up the first screen you will see is the “Home” screen. From here you can use the search bar at the top to quickly find a scripture by just typing it in.

I was very impressed with just how many free resources were available. Even if you don’t own the desktop client there are plenty of translations available to choose from in this app. I was also very glad to find out that Logos Software’s customizable search feature is also available from within this app. You can search the Bible, your entire Library, or do a “basic search.”

Another feature that is very nice is the ability to study a passage and/or a word. You can access the “Passage Guide” from the “More” menu which will list commentaries, cross references and a variety of other material! You can also access word studies from the same “More” menu. Another good way to access a word study is to touch and hold the word that you would like to view a study of. The word study will show you a graph of the different words that are translated to the word you selected. Touching an individual word will show the scriptures for that particular word.

This app is by far one of the best free Bible apps to hit the App Store. If you have been waiting for just the right software to come along, the wait is over! Not only is this software free, but it will also allow you to access a wide variety of resources from your Desktop license if you already have one! So what are you waiting for? The app is free so go ahead and download it today! You won’t regret it!

By far the most fascinating application I’ve reviewed in a while, QuickReader is designed to improve your reading speed. I was cautiously skeptical at first, but after a few sessions with the app, I can actually feel myself improving. Anyone willing to invest the time in developing their speed-reading skills should grab this app immediately.

As one iTunes store reviewer put it, QuickReader is like a metronome for reading. By default, the app is set to 3 “stops” per line and 300 words per minute. A “stop” is essentially a highlighted portion of the text; it’s the digital equivalent to traditional methods like using a pen to track your progress. The highlight steadily moves across the page according to the pace you set, and you’re supposed to follow along with it. It’s supposed to allow you to focus on groups of words and to read properly from side to side, because your eye focuses naturally on movement.

If it sounds simple, that’s because it is. I can’t explain the science behind it myself, but after using it for just a few days, I can see a marked improvement in my speed. There’s a speed test included with the application, and I was reading around 325 words per minute at the beginning; now, I’m hovering between 585 and 608. I have to put forth a conscious effort to read quickly, but it feels comfortable. What shocked me most was that I was able to retain what I had read, at nearly double the speed—and I haven’t even been using QuickReader for a week! Granted, that speed hasn’t quite translated into the offscreen world, but if I focus, I can approach similar speeds.

There are three modes within the application: Guided Reading, Normal Reading, and Speed Test. I recommend taking a Speed Test prior to starting with the app, so that you can nudge the words per minute rate just a little higher than your current speed. Normal Reading is good if you just want to read the bundled classics. Thankfully, you can switch freely through the modes mid-read without having to navigate back to the menu. You can also fully customize font and color schemes, which makes QuickReader a solid eBook reader as well as a reading-improvement device. Both landscape and portrait reading modes are supported.

The application comes with 21 classic eBooks for you to practice with. I’m working with Sherlock Holmes, which might account for my speed; though a classic, it’s hardly as dense as, say, a textbook. The developers apparently have plans to incorporate an eBook store in the future, but I’d love to be able to upload my own eBooks into the reader—I have quite a few sitting around on my hard drive.

I suspect that your mileage may vary with QuickReader. I was already a relatively fast reader (a little over a page per minute with a real book?), and I adapted to the methods used here quickly. Others may struggle. Still, for me, it’s an incredibly useful tool, and I’m glad that I downloaded it. If you’re a frequent reader, you should definitely give this application a try; even if the price makes you hesitate, you need to check out the lite version. The effects are nothing short of magical.

The It-Girl Exclusive preview app offers an insider’s peek into the lives of the rich and popular boarding students of Waverly Academy. This app is great for anyone who wants preview a few of the It Girl series books before they buy, as well as anyone who is a fan of the popular Gossip Girl television series. I had purchased the first book of the It Girl series and loved the storyline, so I was excited to get a preview of the next books in the series to decide if I wanted to buy it or not. I opened the app and it gave a short summary of what the It Girl series storyline focused on as well as images of the three books in the series. I also had the option of buying the books from iTunes right from the app. When I chose which book I wanted to read, I could either read the book straight away, or view the Table of Contents or Instructions.

Using this app was very user-friendly and straightforward, I swiped to turn the page, pinched to adjust the text, and I could also tap the top of the screen for more features. Tapping the number of each page also allowed me to quickly skim through the book. I found the text to be the perfect size for viewing on my iPhone. The app did crash on me a few times when loading the pages, which I thought was annoying, so I hope the developers can make this app more stable in future versions. Other than that minor setback, I loved the effortless design of the app and the fact that there were multiple books that I could choose from, not just the It Girl Series. Each book recommended followed the teen drama genre and were similar stories of the glamorous rich and popular life.

In a world that is often cold and unforgiving, we all have our place of refuge. That place that resonates within us and always feels like home. For Emmett James, that place is the cinema.

In 1980s South London, in order to cope with the woes and perils of his adolescence, James visits the cinema where he feels the ultimate connection to who he is. In his memoirs, James writes of films and how they work to connect us to who we are and how got here. It is through these observations that James realizes his true calling and leaves London and heads to Hollywood to become an actor.

James highlights the ups and downs of his career and the business behind the glitz and glamour that is the Hollywood scene. From crashing award ceremonies, to pornography to a blockbuster hit, James’s memories will keep you captivated as he has a story worth listening to.

I must also say that I love this interface for the book. It immediately launches with a table of contents. Once you begin to read, you can play or pause the text with a feature that is called auto-scroll, which allows you to enjoy the book hands free if you so choose. There are also arrows that allow you to go up and down by page individually, or you can do the good ol’ scroll with your finger, which I find particularly daunting. But you do get to select the scroll speed as well.

You can change the font size thus making the text easier to read. And you can even choose between reading the text horizontally or vertically. Admit One even has a bookmarks feature so you can come back to the place you left off when you launch the app again. Admit One is a great book, has great app design and comes highly favored by yours truly!

Upon opening this app, I could choose to preview the first three books of the Gossip girl series, as well as purchase them from iTunes. There were also other books available to preview, which was an added bonus. These books ranged from the A-list to the It-Girl and Diva Without a Cause.

When I clicked to preview the book, I could view the Table of Contents, Instructions or simply start reading. While reading the book, users can swipe to turn the page, tap the top of the screen for more options such as the Book Store and the ability to take notes within the text. I found the text to be very standard and easy to read, and the extra features that were included with this reader were helpful and added to my reading experience. I found the storyline to be entertaining and I could see why the TV show is such a hit! There is so much juicy material that lies in the books. I would recommend this app to anyone who is a fan of the show and loves a free peek into the books that inspired it, as well as those who love a bit of scandal and gossip in their lives.
