Comic books and the iPad seem like a match made in heaven, but there are still some kinks to work out before they can truly come into their own. Take, for instance, WMDs, a new iPhone-only comic book. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was when I first downloaded it. I couldn’t tell if it was a motion comic, a fully animated short, a traditional comic, or some sort of hybrid of the three. As it turns out, it’s mostly like a traditional comic book, and, unfortunately, not a particularly good one.

Both issues 1.0 and 1.5 are currently available through the app store for free, so there’s no harm in trying them out. What you will find is a series with some promise – the initial trailer for the series uses live action and animation to showcase the series’ premise that superhumans are responsible for many of the world’s great disasters and large-scale military triumphs. But once you get past the initial pomp during the opening sequences, what you’re left with is a pretty standard comic book.

To be fair, the comic book reader software included with each issue/episode of WMDs is clean and simple. You are generally treated to one panel at a time, and you can pinch and zoom to get a closer look at any time. It’s standard stuff for a reader these days, but it’s well implemented here.

I think my expectations would have been lower, and my evaluation of this series higher, had WMDs been released as a standard comic book through an app like Comixology’s Comics. Instead, the hint of animation and live action footage makes the actual comic pale in comparison. It also doesn’t help that the art for WMDs, while serviceable, is sometimes scratchy and seems unfinished in places.

No doubt there will be additional episodes/issues in the WMDs series, but if the developers intend to continue presenting their story using a traditional comic book format, they might have better luck selling individual issues through another venue rather than their one-issue-per-app approach.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Are you in school studying for your MBA and still searching for that perfect study aid to help you with completely your degree? If that fits your description then you may find Pocket MBA Full Course (Part 1) an app would reading about.

This app is developed by Intersog and is similar to taking a course at your own pace. It is really nice, clean, in depth, and does a great job of offering something for different learning styles.

First of all you’ll notice when you launch the app that it has a great interface to it. It defaults to the main menu, which lists out the different courses that you can choose from, with a brief summary of each one. From here you will pick the subject you are interested in studying and proceed to Launch that course.

Once you choose and go into a course you’ll see it’s even broken down into chapters. After that it goes into pre-course expectations, which I think is great, so you will know what to expect to learn from each chapter. In addition, if you look along the bottom you’ll see that they offer the chapter in modes to read the text, study through flash cards, and even to take an exam.

A few things worth noting about this app ..

1. You can bookmark your progress or just any sections you would like to refer back to.

2. You can search for topics throughout the app through a handy search button.

3. There’s a handy glossary (specific to the application) so you can look up new words quickly and easily as you encounter them).

4. The app is quick, smooth, really clean, and just overall very nicely laid out. You can tell the developer put a lot of time into fine tuning this application.

My thoughts? If you’re studying for your MBA and need a great tool to give you that motivation and push to do well then this app is definitely worth looking at. Yes, it’s pricey but so is your education, right? Those Master’s classes aren’t cheap, trust me I know!

If doing well and not repeating courses is important to you then this app may be worth the investment. It’s very nice, seems very in depth, and may be what you need to give your education that extra boost, so check it out in the App Store today!

Pocket God Comics Review

Pocket God Comics Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: iVerse Media
Price: $0.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.92 out of 5 stars

Pocket God is famous. I think that’s fair to say, given that the little app has seen over three million paid downloads over its long life. Pocket God started as a simple island with some pygmy inhabitants. Later episodes added minigames and content, but the draw remains the same: killing and torturing the pygmies!

Pocket God Comics stars those same pygmies, though now they’ve got distinct personalities. I’m not always a fan of spin-offs, but you know what? The references to the game in the story, combined with its the comic’s own merits, ensure that any Pocket God fan will enjoy it.

The app currently contains just the first issue of the comic. So far, Bolt has a four-issue miniseries planned, and the story focuses on the question: exactly how and why are the pygmies immortal? What brings them back to life each time they die? Additionally, one of the pygmies starts demanding why they follow the whims of gods who so obviously like to torture them. (Er…)

Throughout the first issue, the pygmies die and are reborn numerous times, just as in the app. Fans will recognize the methods — fire ants, sharks, meteors — there’s pygmy death a-plenty!

The app itself uses iVerse’s comics app as a basis, so you can view panels in either portrait mode and then zoom in; or in landscape mode, where panels are displayed one by one. Later issues will be available via in-app purchase. The comic itself is well-done, especially the art — though at 20-ish pages, it is a little short. As a bonus, it’s a universal app, so iPhone and iPad owners alike can enjoy a version optimized for their device.

Overall, Pocket God Comics is a great companion to a hugely popular game. The art is very well done, the story sheds light on the main app, and $0.99 is still dirt cheap for a comic issue. Oh, and you will be able to buy print copies, too, in the near future. If you’re a Pocket God fan, this is an app you need to check out.

iPhone App Review: You Can’t Always Get What You Want

iPhone App Review: You Can’t Always Get What You Want is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Fans of classic rock, rock memoirs, or first-person accounts of free concerts that end in a stabbing should all find something to like in Sam Cutler’s book You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

The iPhone app of the same name is basically the book made into a dedicated app. For less than the price of the paperback or Kindle versions on Amazon, you get the full text of the book plus pictures and videos (including interviews with the author himself, Sam Cutler).

Cutler is a conversational writer, and the book itself is very easy to get into. Even if you have little interest in the Stones (or the Grateful Dead, with which he also toured) you may find yourself sucked into his account of the classic rock era. He writes with a style that is unpretentious and vocal, reading on the page almost like it would be spoken from across the table at a party.

But you can find reviews of the book itself elsewhere I’m sure (and from more qualified literary critics), what I’m really here to talk about is the app itself.

The app starts simply with a quick splash screen and then the menu page. The options are simple: the book is first, as it should be, followed by videos and photos, bookmarks, a link to send an email to the developers for feedback, and a link to buy the book itself from one of several vendors.

Features

  • The book, of course
  • Several different font styles and sizes
  • Autoscroll
  • Bookmarking
  • “Night View” mode
  • “Audio” mode (someone, I presume the author, reading the book aloud along with the text)

Pros

  • The book itself is quite good, a raw look behind the scenes of the events leading up to the most infamous concert in rock history, and beyond.
  • It seems like a small thing, but having bookmarks linked directly from the menu could easily have been overlooked. Good choice.
  • Having several fonts, sizes, night view (reversed colors), and audio is good considering you would have most of those available on the Kindle version for the same price.
  • Lots of photos and videos.
  • Cheaper than the Kindle version by half!

Cons

  • When you start the book portion, and even every time you enter the settings screen, the book automatically scrolls the text for you. You must press pause each time to get it to stop. It’s irritating and unnecessary unless you’re following along with the audio track.
  • When you first start the app there is no indication that you need to tap to get past the title screen. It just sits there staring at you until you do something.
  • The buttons at the bottom menu bar when you’re in the book give no visible feedback that they’ve been pressed.
  • There is no bookmark indicator, such as on typical ebook readers. You can’t tell if the page you’re on is bookmarked without entering the bookmark list.

Overall

You Can’t Always Get What You Want is a great book on its own, packaged into a quality reading app that has a few rough edges to be hammered out. If this is a story that interests you I say save yourself the $5 and get this version over the Kindle, snagging yourself some pictures and videos in the process!

My biggest suggestion for this app would be to incorporate a means to track books that people have read, because that seems to be a common trait among avid readers. That could be as simple as a long, uncategorized list or as nice as breaking it out by genre (possibly pulled from amazon’s website as well), author, or similar categories / ordering.

All in all if you are an avid reading looking for a quick and easy way to keep track of your future reading list you may want to give My Reading List a look. It’s currently on sale in the App Store for $2.99 and currently is available as an iPad only version.

iPad or Kindle? A Flawed, but Popular, Comparison

iPad or Kindle? A Flawed, but Popular, Comparison is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Most people who have seen my new iPad react with the same question, “should I get this or the Kindle?” Apple, obviously, intended its iPad to be perceived as much more than an eBook reader. Yet the much publicized launch of the iBookstore, along with the iPad’s slim form factor, have led many consumers to perceive the iPad as an expensive eBook reader.

The Kindle is the Premier eBook Reader

Amazon’s Kindle 2

The Kindle was launched solely as an eBook reader and is marketed as such. Jeff Bezos, on introducing the device, said of the Kindle that “it’s so ambitious to take something as highly evolved as the book and improve on it. And maybe even change the way people read.” Amazon has definitely done much of the legwork in improving the acceptability of the eBook as a new medium for written material. Amazon’s true innovation was bringing E-Ink technology to the consumer market, along with doing the technical legwork to simplify the reading experience. At its core, the Kindle is a delivery device – a user purchases a book as they would online and finds it available for reading seconds later.

The reading experience does everything it can to mimic the experience of paper, all of which is aided by E-Ink. The screen is technology’s response to those who complained that they would never be able to read a book on a traditional LCD screen or a laptop. The Kindle itself is merely the size of a large paperback and is lighter than most printed books. The Kindle is Bezos’ effort to translate the book for the digital age, and he has largely succeeded in providing a popular and widely accepted new platform.

The iPad as an eBook Reader

Apple’s iPad with iBooks

The iPad has benefited from terrific interest from both book publishers and book retailers. As a consequence we’ve seen innovative new packages like the Vook and traditional books from retailers like B&N, Amazon, and more. While the Kindle has a terrific – and probably the largest – bookstore, the iPad offers more choices for where you get your ebooks.

There’s Apple’s iBooks, Amazon’s Kindle reading app, B&N’s new iPad reader, and more. The three largest players each offer different solutions to the eBook problem. iBooks tries to mimic the feel of a physical book, utilizing a color UI with beautifully rendered page turns. The Kindle’s UI is black and white and encourages the same type of user interaction as the physical Kindle – a simple tap on the side of the screen changes pages in a fluid transition not as visually distracting as that of iBooks. B&N’s app allows users to choose from dozens of different visual settings but maintains the same fluid page transitions as Amazon’s Kindle app. Only the iBooks app has a store in-app; the others force the reader to go to Safari to purchase books. This is a definite snag in the clear workflow Bezos presented with the original Kindle, but one that I’m sure both B&N and Amazon will surmount in future applications.

The iPad’s reflective LCD screen probably isn’t the best for simply reading a book. It’s a pain in the sun, where it’s nearly impossible to see the text on a page. E-Ink mainly solves this problem with its screen. People who have issues reading for long periods of time on their laptops may wish to reconsider an iPad purchase if it’s intended solely as an eBook reader. While the reading experience is cleaner and more enjoyable, it’s the same experience as the backlit screens most notebooks include. In addition, the iPad’s battery life is rated at 10 hours, enough for most commuters but nowhere near the weeks the Kindle can last for.

The iPad as a Platform: Bigger Than Books

A Vook on the iPad

The key differentiator between the two comes when we move beyond the simple eBook reading features. The Kindle includes a browser, but not one that functions nearly as well as the iPad’s. It’s black and white and renders incredibly slowly due to the E-Ink screen technology. The iPad’s Safari browser is widely regarded as one of the best on a mobile platform.

I’ve always seen the iPad as more than a traditional book reader as well. The Kindle simply translates the book reading experience into the digital age but strives not to completely alter the way we experience books. New features like Amazon’s Popular Highlights add subtle suggestions about the importance of a passage but do not redefine the reading workflow. Cool ideas like the aforementioned Vook change the reading experience by adding videos, multimedia, more information about certain topics (with links) and more. Could the iPad help the form of the written word change? Only time, and developers, will tell.

Decisions, Decisions
Those of you struggling with the decision to purchase an iPad or a Kindle might want to do some soul searching. What do you want from your portable device? Just books and nothing more? Buy a Kindle – that’s what it’s meant for. But if you’re looking for a small computer, with thousands of different and innovative new applications that could redefine reading, the iPad is for you.

Celebrity Meet-up? Get Them to Autograph It

Celebrity Meet-up? Get Them to Autograph It is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $.99   Score: 8/10   By Michelle SchustermanAutograph It

I’m not one to run screaming at the sight of a celebrity – well, maybe in the other direction. But the possible usefulness of Autograph It goes beyond shrieky fangirls.

Designed by Sulaba, this app aims to be how we get an autograph in the digital age. First, the convenience; no paper or pen necessary. As long as you have your iPhone, you’re prepared for any celebrity sighting. Second, you get more than just a signature. From the icons at the bottom, you can choose to take a picture from within the app, choose an existing picture, or leave it as a blank white page.

You can also choose the recording icon and record your celebrity crush professing his undying love for you so you’ll have proof for your friends. (Because oh yes, that’s exactly what will happen.) And for more legible text documentation of the momentous occasion, you can choose the “notes” icon and type in a description, like where you were, the time, or anything else. One more icon lets you share the autograph (including voice, saved as a WAV file) by email or Facebook.

All of this means that, within a few seconds, you can have a signed photograph with voice message ready to share with family and friends – a pretty cool package. I like how Autograph It allows you to set the thickness of the “pen” from the main menu. As far as functionality, of course it doesn’t allow for as neat an autograph as you would get with pen and paper – you are writing with your finger, after all.

One small point of criticism is that the eraser (which I’m very grateful to have) is set to the same thickness as the pen. If you have the pen set to be particularly thin, erasing is pretty much not worth it – better to start over.

You can save these little autograph packages and assign them to categories. One thing I found interesting was that you can still edit the autographs within the gallery, including adding or changing text and deleting the picture or voice message. I can’t decide if I’d prefer the autograph to be permanent – after all, if you get it right the first time, why risk messing it up later?

Autograph It is a cool concept, it works and the price is pretty darn good. If you’re planning a trip to Hollywood, want to have something cool to keep track of people you meet, or just want to be prepared in case Angelina Jolie shows up at your local Chili’s, check this app out for sure.

Autograph It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer in order to speed up the publication of this review.
