Shall we all take a brief moment to remember the glory days of Palm Pilots and Palm OS? Those days may be gone, but there are still apps and developers looking to translate their Palm successes to the iPhone. One of the most recent translations is also one of the biggest from the good old days of Palm: Agendus.

Agendus attempts to pull together all of the disparate elements of the classic PIM into a tidy iPhone package. The app contains a multi-functional calendar with full Google Calendar sync, a task or to-do list creator/editor, and a contact manager. On top of that, Agendus’ home screen also provides a quote of the day, a “This Day in History” factoid and the current weather forecast for your location. The ability to edit and create events and have them sync with your Google Calendars is certainly helpful, but I was most immediately taken with the “extended view” for contacts, which allows you to view your list of contacts with their photos, email addresses and phone numbers present as well. This way, it’s easy to look up a contact and with one click connect to him/her via any of the email addresses or phone numbers you have stored for that person. Shouldn’t this already be possible in the iPhone’s existing contacts app? Agendus certainly has the right idea with this.

Google Calendar sync is quick and seamless – probably one of the fastest syncs I’ve seen yet – and I like how you can view a full year’s calendar on one screen. Small black dots are under any date that has an event scheduled, so it’s easy to see where you’ve already committed yourself and where you have open space on your calendar.

The task list is not particularly impressive, in that it isn’t very different from a hundred other task list apps I’ve seen over the years. However, I give Agendus credit for including a decent and functional one that works with the other parts of this suite.

At first glance, I was very impressed with Agendus. But upon extended use, I discovered several dismaying aspects of the app that simply need to be remedied as quickly as possible. For instance, when I tried to use the visual calendar editor to extend the time of an upcoming meeting, the app created another event concurrent with the one already present. Then, when I tried to delete this new event, it created ANOTHER event. I think I ended up with about four or five events happening at roughly the same time, and I still don’t know how to delete them. Then, I began worrying that those new events had been synced to my Google Calendars, so it really created quite a little dilemma.

Likewise, when I tried to edit an event’s details using the typing function, the keyboard came up but obscured some of the necessary commands and functions I needed. I could never figure out how to reach those commands, so I just gave up. While I understand that this is still a work in progress, and that there are bugs to work out in almost every app, there are two points to consider. One: Agendus is a productivity app. Any app that makes this claim, then hinders productivity by its very design flaws, is difficult to trust. And two: Agendus is expensive (by app store standards, at least). At $7.99, it ought to do what it claims to do with only minor reports of trouble. This, alas, is not the case.

My final concern is with the general look of the app. It certainly does many different things, but it doesn’t look or feel as sophisticated as I think it should. The colors are very muted (dull blues and greens) and the entire presentation feels extremely utilitarian. I understand that a productivity app is all about getting things done, but can’t those same things get done with a little more style. Apple inherently knows this. Agendus still has the look and feel of an earlier Palm app and it’s definitely in need of a look and feel overhaul.

I really wanted to like Agendus. I really did. I’m a teacher when I’m not blogging, and I keep all of my daily classroom events on separate Google Calendars. I want and need a way to have perfect access to this information whenever I am away from my computer. Agendus is not the solution I’ve been looking for. In its present state, I can’t see making it my default client for all of my productivity needs. It has great potential, no doubt, but this is one app that should still be in the developer’s workshop.

CalPrint for iPhone Review

CalPrint for iPhone Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: EuroSmartz Ltd
Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

For productivity and organization junkies, this is the perfect App for sharing and printing your Calendars, anywhere, straight from your iPhone. For my review of CalPrint, I’ll first look at its usefulness as a Calendar App and then describe the printing feature, which is the highlight of this app from EuroSmartz, Ltd.

At first, you may notice that CalPrint has a similar look and feel to the built-in Calendar App with iOS4 — a basic layout with several views. My favorite is Month View, but with this App you’ll find it different than the built-in Calendar App as it actually shows your events on the dates instead of just a marker for events with descriptions below. This is a common theme in third party calendar Apps, as most people want to see the information about their upcoming events all at once within this view. This is a greatly appreciated change from the built-in App. Another feature that I always enjoy is how one can navigate in this view to the next month. More and more Calendar Apps are offering side-swiping for this, and CalPrint is no exception. A fantastic idea for ease of use, and a definite plus over the regular Calendar (which I find out be a little cumbersome to navigate sometimes).

The Day View gives you a basic hour-by-hour layout similar to the iOS Calendar App, but also has the side-swiping feature of going from day to day along your schedule. CalPrint also has what they call ‘week view’ which allows you to basically see several these hour-by-hour day schedules at once, in a week-long format. You can also zoom in & out to get fewer or more days (up to 7) in this view. It’s an interesting addition, and while I still prefer Month View, I’m sure someone will have this as a favorite too.

The final view is List, and here we have something a bit special as well. Instead of listing basically all of your upcoming events, you can customize which events this list shows. Your options are by date ranges, and offer quick-taps for lists like ‘next week’ or ‘this month’ or you can custom build a list from specified dates. Really fantastic if you simply want your schedule while you’re on vacation, or on a business trip, or something else of that nature.

Now that you’re familiar with viewing your calendar, let me quickly go over editing. It’s fairly simple. In every view you have the same top-bar that offers three choices – Edit/Add Events, Email Calendar and Print. Obviously to add events you’ll want the first option, and adding events is as simple as filling out the same details as you would in the built-in Calendar App. Just make sure that you’ve selected the proper date, as it won’t auto-select the date, even in Day view.

If you have a Wifi Printer and your iPhone is on the same network, the App should automatically detect and be able to print just fine. If you don’t have a Wifi Printer but still have your printer shared on your network you’ll have to download the WePrint Software (don’t worry, it’s free!) to manage the printers. One final trick is that using this software you’ll actually be able to print from your iPhone regardless of the network. This allows you to print something via Wifi or even 3G someplace else. You can find these settings within the WePrint’s Print via Proxy preferences. The other built-in sharing option is via email; you can email a PDF document to yourself, or anyone else, which is convenient for printing later.

Sadly, while this App is very functional and absolutely useful, it does have a couple design flaws. First and foremost is the fact that it does not show multi-day ‘All Day’ events over the course of each day. It only shows up on the day that it begins. Secondly, I did mention earlier that even in Day View you’ll have to manually enter in which day you’ll want to add your event too – not a big deal, but still a bit bothersome. And while the Email via PDF is a fantastic feature, sadly my PDF was blank.

Finally I do want to note the extensive support and help that EuroSmartz offers on their website. Not only a full support document section, but also how-to videos on setting up and using the WePrint software.

While there are some drawbacks, this is still a great App to have around. It’s useful and simple. While you might not find it to be the perfect app for customizing or using as an everyday Calendar App, it’s definitely perfect for viewing and quickly editing when need be, and you’ll be able to print and share your calendars from anywhere. If you’re a calendar junkie, and even if you’re not, I highly suggest checking it out.

Agendus Conveniently Compiles All Organizational Necessities

Agendus Conveniently Compiles All Organizational Necessities is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $7.99    Score: 9/10    By A. PapachristosAgendus

Keeping track of tasks, appointments and events is a chore itself.  Birthdays, holidays, errands, projects, due dates, meetings – the list goes on and on.  And while many iPhone and iPod Touch applications attempt to satisfy one or all of your organizational needs, finding something that fits your lifestyle can be hit or miss.

With Agendus by iambic, Inc., you just may have a hit on your hands.  Not only does Agendus provide users with an application that helps sync their calendars, tasks and contacts, but it also adds a few unique touches that make this award-winning personal information manager (PIM) fun and informative as well as useful.

When you first start up Agendus, you will be asked a few questions, such as whether you’d like to receive Push notifications, if you’d like Agendus to use your current location, and if you would like to sync with Google Calendar.  If you have a Google account and maintain your calendar, simply enter your account’s login information and Agendus will immediately sync your existing calendar with the application itself via the Internet and over-the-air synchronization.

By allowing Agendus to detect your current location, users will gain access to the 7-day weather forecast right on their ‘Today’ page, which is both the first tab and your starting page.  Your ‘Today’ page will also display the day’s date, that day’s events and tasks, as well as your “Quote of the Day” and “This Day in History” entry, making Agendus stand out above any other organizer application I have come upon to date.  These unique characteristics make Agendus seem user friendly from the start, while many other such organizers appear daunting and confusing.

The next tab over marks your ‘Calendar’ page, which allows you five different views.  When users view their Calendar in Day view, they see every task, event or appointment they may have that day listed according to the time it is set to occur.  List view allows users to see all the events they have planned for the given month.  Week view looks much like that of an old homework assignment notepad, allowing you to see what you have planned for every day of that particular week.  Month view will show dots under each day that has something scheduled.  When you tap on the day, you will see each event listed underneath the calendar listed in chronological order.  Year view is similar, except you are able to see every month on one page.

(Note: Each tab displays a ‘+’ icon in the top right which allows users to add a new item to their lists quickly and easily at any time.)

The ‘Tasks’ tab, of course, displays any tasks you need to complete.  Tap the ‘Task Filter’ button in the top left corner and you will see that you can categorize and separate your task list according to the item’s status (In Progress, Completed, etc.), the item’s priority (Low, Medium, High), the item’s category (Business, Personal), or by which items are due within a certain time frame.  An easy-to-understand icon marks each categorization, keeping the list neat and tidy.

Using the ‘Contacts’ tab, users can access their entire phonebook’s list of contacts without ever having to leave Agendus as the information is automatically linked.  Here, users can view their contacts in the traditional view, in picture mode (name and number displayed next to their photo if one already exists), or in birthday view (names with birthdays attached listed chronologically according to upcoming dates).

Under the ‘Preferences’ tab, users can edit how they view each individual tab, as well as general and specific settings for every characteristic offered.  Users may even buy more icons to use when labeling their many tasks and events.  Best of all, users can watch a video tutorial (if they did not when prompted upon startup) that outlines how to use each tab to the fullest extent.  And though most everything about Agendus is purely intuitive, such an aid proves that this application’s only agenda is to truly ease the burden of a busy life.

Agendus

Agendus requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch.

BlueMoon

BlueMoon is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Need help keeping track of when you last did something, and more importantly, when is it due again? BlueMoon is here for the iPhone. Unlike a repeating event on a calendar, BlueMoon events “float” relative to when they last occurred. It’s this attribute that makes BlueMoon great for keeping track of things that happen at some specified interval, but usually don’t happen coinciding with the calendar’s popular metrics. When was the last time you called Mom, or changed the batteries in your smoke alarm? Do you plan to visit Uncle Bob every couple of months, but really don’t call on him the same day? Parents of multiple children might like the capability to keep track of the the last restaurant or fast food favorite you ate at, and when you are due for Billy’s favorite taco place. Who gets to put the star on top of the Holiday Tree this year, its all kept in BlueMoon. When you need to keep a log or history of each and every occurrence, or at least a count of how many times something happens, BlueMoon is your tool. Examples are tracking symptoms (headaches, allergies, upset stomach, etc) to report to your doctor or instrument calibrations and checks. Here are just a few ideas for things to keep track of with BlueMoon:

Oil Changes
Furnace air filter replacement
Giving the dog heartworm pills etc.
The last time you called Mom or that out-of-town friend
Haircuts
Smoke alarm battery replacement
Checking tire pressure on your cars
General pet care – feeding fish, cleaning tanks, grooming, clean cat box etc
New shoes for kids (teenagers will try for new pair every couple of weeks – see just how long “forever” has been!)
Contact lenses (cleaned / replaced)
Fireplace flue cleanings (time interval based or easily track number of fires!)
Mattress flipping (or adding chemicals to waterbed)
Clock battery replacement
Watch battery replacement
