I like to keep my reviews free of hyperbole – unless, of course, I’m trying to make a joke, which usually doesn’t go well – so I would never say that an app turns your iPhone’s camera into something as powerful as a digital SLR. I know what those cameras can do, and to have that on a phone is simply not (yet) possible.

I’ve checked out a lot of camera apps, and in the end, for one reason or another, I just resort to using the camera as is on my phone. But Pro Camera, designed by daemgen.net, has moved on over to the first page of apps on my screen.

What I love about this app is that it caters both to those who have a decent understanding of photography, and those who just want to enhance the iPhone’s camera. The app opens straight to the camera itself, but you can tap “Pro” in the bottom left and find a user guide in Settings to get some help. You can zoom in and out either by tapping the zoom icon in the bottom right, or by pinching. Tap the timer icon to set a timed shot (you can change the number of seconds in Settings as well). And the center icon is the anti-shake feature – find your shot, tap it, and the iPhone will take your picture the second you’re holding the iPhone perfectly still. (This is the best option when you’re zoomed in on something.)

For simplicity’s sake, you can tap anywhere on the screen to take a picture. By tapping the “Pro” icon, you can switch to the video, go to your photo album, and add or subtract the compass and other grids to help you find your focus and level the shot. Inside the albums, you can view your photos and get width and height info, email the full-size photo, or activate the photo studio, which allows you to adjust the photo settings and add effects.

It sounds like a lot – and there’s much more – but the fact is this app is very easy to use. If you’re interested in getting better shots with your iPhone camera, this one is three bucks well spent.

Phones have become a suspicious tool because they simplify one’s ability to spy and cheat.  With the ability to send photos and videos by pressing a single button, users can share vital or incriminating evidence within moments.  However, with My EYE by TouchMeProject, users now have access to an application that promises to serve just this purpose despite the fact that it lacks even some of the most basic features you can access for free with the tools built directly into your iPhone.

With My EYE, users can connect with other users to send messages and videos right within the application.  (Yes, both users have to download My EYE in order for such transfer to work.)  Working in real-time via Bluetooth, My EYE does not require an Internet connection, nor an additional paid messaging plan.

When you start the application, you will see two eyes, one being the actually letter i itself.  Tapping on the letter will provide you with usage information because, without such instruction, it would be extremely difficult to figure out My EYE’s true purpose.  By tapping the actual image of the eye, users can then search for and connect to any local devices also running My EYE.  Once you have connected, you may send text messages by using the Chat button or video by pressing the Video button.  Your friend will automatically receive your messages when connected.

As the App Store description suggests, you can easily use My EYE to spy on someone or copy off another person’s class work.  However, I do believe that this is the exact reason why students must either leave their phones at home or present them to their teacher when taking important exams.  Such cheating can also lead to plagiarism, which can have serious ramifications.

Also, with a special introductory price available until the next update, the My EYE description also includes a list of features to be added in the next version: the ability to connect via Wi-Fi, send audio, send photo and save photo.  Not to be a killjoy, but I can already perform all these tasks with the default features nearly every phone comes with these days, and I will not need to connect via Bluetooth with someone running the exact same application on their iPhone.

I can already send text messages courtesy of the data plan my phone carrier mandated upon purchasing my iPhone.  And, if I do not want to text them, there are multiple applications that provide instant messaging for free.  I can already connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G, allowing me to send information in this respect as well.  I can send photos via text message or email, whichever I prefer, and I can save any received photos right to my photo library.  And I have been sending audio messages since my very first cell phone.  (That was their original use, correct?)

No offense, but if I can already accomplish such tasks without the $.99 price tag and the restrictions that come with only being able to interact with other My EYE users, why wouldn’t I simply use what Apple gave me?

tap tap tap’s Camera+ was allegedly pulled from the App Store by Apple this morning for sneaking in a hidden feature that Apple had previously denied.

The feature in question was tap tap tap’s manipulation of the volume control buttons, letting them control the camera shutter rather than a button on the screen. In their own words, by using the volume controls instead of an on-screen button, “photos can be sharper because you can now hold your iPhone steadier with two hands instead of fumbling around for the shutter button on screen.”

It makes sense, as it puts the volume buttons right where the shutter button would normally be on a camera, but Apple didn’t like it. Apple, in their statement to tap tap tap regarding their reasoning for rejecting the feature, wrote that,

Your application cannot be added to the App Store because it uses iPhone volume buttons in a non-standard way, potentially resulting in user confusion. Changing the behavior of iPhone external hardware buttons is a violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement. Applications must adhere to the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines as outlined in the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement section 3.3.7.

Instead of letting the feature die though, tap tap tap threw in a hidden trick in their latest version. They released in a tweet that “by visiting the URL camplus://enablevolumesnap in Mobile Safari, one could make the volume buttons on the side of the iPhone instead act as a camera shutter button”.

The tweet was pulled soon after, but tap tap tap had to have known that the feature would be widely publicized and eventually found by Apple. They said themselves in their blog post regarding the initial feature rejection that, “When Apple finds out about these incidents, they tend to crack down pretty hard on them, sometimes going so far as completely banning the developers from the App Store. So this is definitely not the smart way to go.”

Now what are the chances that tap tap tap, in order to spur sales for an app that was admittedly slumping in sales, planted the Twitter post, knew that big sites would pick up on the story, and then pulled the app themselves?

Regardless, the app is not in the App Store anymore, and it is unclear if Apple will do/ has done anything about the situation. There have also oddly been no comments from tap tap tap on their blog or elsewhere about the app being pulled, which, considering the apps popularity, would be expected if they were going to try to force Apple’s hand through public support. Media stunt or not, it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
