Dark Void Zero:
Dark Void on the consoles may have bombed on the review charts, but the iPhone version is an utterly different story. 8-bit visuals, achievements, online leaderboards, and so much more make this side scrolling shooter a highly addictive game. Capcom, being the devilishly nice company they are, is even feeling a bit generous and letting you get it for a lousy $0.99 this weekend.

Enjoy all 14 levels and 8 bosses in this side scrolling shooter. Even better, this game is rocking a sweet sale right now. Capcom, we thank you for giving us a reason to skip out on chores this weekend.

Street Fighter IV Update Adds Two New Characters, Downloadable Costumes

Street Fighter IV Update Adds Two New Characters, Downloadable Costumes is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Capcom has updated the iPhone and iPod Touch edition of its popular one-on-one fighting game Street Fighter IV ($9.99), adding Crimson Viper and E. Honda as playable characters.

Longtime Street Fighter fans will remember the sumo wrestler E. Honda as being part of Street Fighter II’s original roster, as well as being featured in a number of sequels and expansions. Crimson Viper, introduced in the arcade version of Street Fighter IV, is a unique character whose skillset is difficult to master, but is deadly in the hands of experienced players.

E. Honda and Crimson Viper expand Street Fighter IV’s roster to 12 playable characters, including Cammy and Zangief, who were introduced in June. The latest update also adds new costumes for Ryu and Chun-Li, both of which are available as 99-cent in-app purchases.

If you once owned an NES or even an SNES, you probably played some variant on Capcom’s classic Ghosts’N Goblins. And if you did play it, I’m 99% sure that you became very angry very quickly. Ghosts’N Goblins always seemed like an innocuous, cartoony little game up front, but once started it dealt out death upon death upon death. In fact, I gave up on it without, I think, ever even reaching the end of one level. Not only was it a tough game, it was frustrating, and, for me, not very fun.

Jump forward 20 or so years, and Ghosts’N Goblins has made the transition to the iPhone, this time as Ghosts’N Goblins Gold Knights II. If you’ve played one of its predecessors, you know what to expect here, but I am delighted to say that the learning curve of this new game, while not exactly easy, is definitely more accessible. You’ll still get frustrated, no doubt, but your frustration won’t take on quite the mind-numbing rage quality it did in 1985. For that, we should all be grateful.

True to its roots, Ghosts’N Goblins Gold Knights II is a side-scrolling shooter. Unlike most of the other versions of the game, however, you can choose to play as either the classic Arthur character (who brandishes a number of different ranged weapons throughout the game) or Perceval (who has access to a fairly powerful dash attack). You can also upgrade your character via in-game purchases, but I left this option alone. It seems to me that you should be able to play and enjoy the game without having to pony up more money

Graphically, the game features some of the same character animation you’ve seen before, at least as far as Sir Arthur is concerned. Running, jumping, and, yes, losing his armor are all animations that have been around for a few decades, and they stay true to their origins here. Enemy models, however, are rendered in 3D and the change is a pleasant surprise, though it does not affect gameplay in any way. Still, it’s nice to see some improvements made to the old formula. Likewise the sound effects and music are much the same as they have ever been, though the iPhone is able to generate higher quality symphonic music as an underscore.

Finally, I have stated again and again in reviews my dislike for virtual control pads, and this game is no exception. While the controls (if you can make sure you have your fingers in the right places) are responsive enough, Ghosts’N Goblins Gold Knights II is one of the first games I’ve come across that actually places the virtual controls too far in on the screen, effectively obliterating a large portion of the playing area when you are playing. Why improve the game’s mechanics and play only to make players fight their own fingers to see the game? It defies logic.

In spite of this, I liked playing Ghosts ‘N Goblins Gold Knights II. It was enough of a throwback to remind me why I liked old school games, but forward-thinking enough to make up for those old games’ shortcomings. And at least I’m not screaming in frustration every time I play.

Ghosts’N Goblins sequel coming to iPhone

Ghosts’N Goblins sequel coming to iPhone is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Capcom is a company that is notorious for churning out difficult yet entertaining arcade games. Though it may be hard to believe, they may have reached their pinnacle back in 1985, when they released the original Ghosts’N Goblins in arcades worldwide. To say the game was difficult would be like saying that Poltergeist wasn’t a family film. In fact, some have gone as far as to call it the most difficult arcade game of all time.

So when it was announced that the game was getting a newly revamped sequel on the iPhone, I was understandably skeptical about whether it would even be approachable by the casual gaming masses. However, a press release for the game hopes to set you mind at ease over those concerns.

Free Resident Evil: Afterlife Now Available for iPhone and iPad

Free Resident Evil: Afterlife Now Available for iPhone and iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

In a surprise development, a new Resident Evil game has been released exclusively for iOS devices. Wha…huh?!

Sorry, didn’t mean to get your hopes up. Resident Evil: Afterlife Movie Game is a free promotional title published by Sony Pictures to promote the upcoming Paul W.S. Anderson film Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D. The game is available as a universal app, optimized for both the iPhone and iPad.

Afterlife Movie Game ditches the franchise’s survival horror roots, instead offering up a fixed-position first-person shooter. As Milla Jovovich’s character Alice, players will battle the evil Umbrella Corporation on the way to a showdown with unkillable series antagonist Albert Wesker.

Oh, and there’s lots and lots of zombies. But you probably already knew that.

Be warned that Capcom had no involvement with this game’s creation, so it likely won’t live up to anyone’s expectations. At least it’s free, I guess!

Capcom’s 1942: First Strike Now Available in App Store

Capcom’s 1942: First Strike Now Available in App Store is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

After only recently being unveiled at E3, Capcom’s vertically scrolling shoot-’em-up 1942: First Strike ($2.99) has now arrived for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Following up on the company’s classic arcade 1942 series (and largely based on the recent Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network remake 1942: Joint Strike), 1942: First Strike offers up eight levels of shooting action and three selectable ships.

As in previous games in the series, 1942: First Strike is wrapped in a fairly standard military theme, to complement the wartime setting. The game also features online leaderboards, allowing players to compare their best scores with shooter fans from around the world.

No word yet on whether either of First Strike’s control schemes (both touch or tilt are available) measure up to the standards set by genre leaders Infinity Gene and Espgaluda II, but if you’ve got a soft spot for the simpler days of the shoot-’em-up, 1942: First Strike has nostalgia on its side.

Capcom Reveals Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights II, 1942: First Strike for iPhone

Capcom Reveals Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights II, 1942: First Strike for iPhone is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Capcom has announced the upcoming release of two iPhone-exclusive titles based on its classic arcade franchises 1942 and Ghosts ‘n Goblins.

1942: First Strike, which features art and gameplay elements borrowed from the recent series sequel 1942: Joint Strike for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, is a vertically-scrolling shooter featuring three playable aircraft.

First Strike offers three different control schemes — tilt, touch, and virtual d-pad — and includes eight levels, four boss fights, and online leaderboards.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights II follows up on the original Gold Knights released in the App Store last year. Like its predecessor, Gold Knights II blends 3D characters and backgrounds with classic 2D platforming action.

Arthur and alternate playable character Perceval return for the sequel. Arthur boasts an arsenal of six weapons, while Perceval can charge up each of his three weapons for powerful attacks that can quickly take out the game’s difficult bosses.

1942: First Strike and Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights II will be released in the App Store later this year.
