Disney Releases Free Tron App

Disney Releases Free Tron App is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

2010 is shaping up to be the year of Tron, with Tron: Legacy set to hit theaters near the end of 2010. While it is still five months away, Disney is getting the hype train for Tron: Legacy started up immediately, and one part of this push is the release of a Tron app for the iPhone and iPod touch. While the standard features like movie trailers and information on tie-in products are included, there is one huge and compelling inclusion to the app – the Tanks Arcade game.

This is a reimagining of the Battle Tanks mode of the Tron arcade game as something more resembling a dual-stick shooter. There’s a singleplayer mode that gives you 15 levels to play through that teach you how the game’s mechanics and upgrade system work, as well as providing a reasonable challenge. The real meat here is the online multiplayer mode, which lets you take part in 2, 4, or 6 player deathmatches. It isn’t strictly a free for all, though – you choose from a blue, green, or red faction, and in online games, people of the same faction are your teammates, and the kills you accumulate go towards your faction’s overall progress. It’s a great mechanic for an iPhone game, and makes it more than just a random deathmatch game.

What hasn’t been mentioned is that this app, with the Arcade Tanks game and all, is free to download. Disney also promises more features (both free and premium) to come as Tron: Legacy nears release. As well, for those attending San Diego Comic-Con this week, the app will unlock features for those who show up to the ComiTRON booth (Aisle #3172) and use the app. Disney will be showing off a lot of Tron: Legacy related content at the convention, which we hope to show off to you (as well as anything else iOS related) as it happens at SDCC.

Disney Acquires Tap Tap Revenge Developer, Tapulous

Disney Acquires Tap Tap Revenge Developer, Tapulous is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Tapulous has long reigned as king of the App Store music games. Back in the App Store’s early days, they released a humble, free music game…one of the first. Since then, they’ve expanded, partnering with major artists and raking in the cash thanks to in-app purchases and a plethora of music-related apps. And now, it looks like the original developers have scored again—only this time, they’ve been acquired by Disney.

While Disney doesn’t immediately come to mind when it comes to the App Store, they actually have 30+ apps released. It’s not the first time they’ve acquired an iPhone game, either; Jelly Car 2 is also now a Disney property. As for Tapulous, well, who could blame anyone for being interested? Though the purchase price hasn’t been announced, we know that Tapulous is very valuable indeed. The Tap Tap Revenge series has already racked up 1 billion song plays and 35 million downloads.

Moving forward, don’t fret about Tap Tap Revenge suddenly disappearing from the App Store. Tapulous founder Bart Decrem and COO Andrew Lacy will be joining Disney as senior VPs, but they certainly aren’t abandoning their company. Rather, Tapulous will be “spearheading [Disney's] drive to be the leader in mobile entertainment.” Translation: Disney plans on putting the Tapulous team’s knack for mobile success to good use.

Hats off to the folks at Tapulous!

Toy Story 3 iPhone App Underwhelms

Toy Story 3 iPhone App Underwhelms is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: Free    Score: 3/10    By Shaun CampbellToy

I love Toy Story, but they make it hard to love this app. Toy Story 3 is one of the biggest movies of the summer, but unfortunately, for a hefty 119mb download, the Toy Story 3 app from Disney doesn’t really deliver much.

The Toy Story 3 app is basically just a storefront for a number of in-app purchases, which include two games: Woody’s Wild Ride ($.99) and Toy Story Mania ($4.99). There is some free content here, but it’s limited to “Woody’s Greetings”, “Toy Story Pins” and the “Toy Story Community”.  All of these features require you to be on 3G or have access to a Wi-Fi connection, and the pins and community parts of the app also require you to complete a sign-up to access them.

The Toy Story Pins are basically achievements that you unlock by playing the games (which you have to pay for), so it’s not a feature that has any real functionality unless you’re going to shell out for Woody’s Wild Ride or Toy Story Mania.

It’s a shame that there isn’t even a trial or limited version of any of the games – you really won’t be able to do anything with this app until you pay the extra cash for the games, which themselves aren’t particularly that innovative or appealing.

Toy Story 3 requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Friday Five: June 18th, 2010 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

It’s Friday! Hurray! Of course, for me it’s summer vacation and Fridays aren’t quite as exciting. But, we’ve still got our traditional sampling of delightful new releases from the past week, so that’s something. Big names like ngmoco and Illusion Labs make an appearance this week, as well as a few more mainstream companies like ESPN. Enjoy!

Godfinger
Godfinger from ngmoco allows you to build up a little world of cartoony followers and exert your godly powers on them. In Godfinger, you can be a kind, caring deity—performing Wonders and helping your civilization prosper—or a wicked demagogue, leaving a path of destruction in your wake. You can control sun, rain, lightning, floods, and fire. As you play Godfinger, your actions shape the terrain and your populace’s opinion. It’s almost ngmoco’s answer to Pocket God. Go on, give it a try and test out your godly abilities…Godfinger, like many of ngmoco’s newer games, is free.

Geometry Wars: Touch
Geometry Wars was already a classic Xbox game, but it made its iPad debut back in March. Now, it’s a universal app, meaning that iPhone and iPod owners can get in on the action! Geometry Wars is a simplistic arcade shooter with basic, geometric graphics and a strong retro theme. It also was one of the first major games to make good use of the dual-stick shooter system that’s so popular on the App Store today. The iPhone/iPad version also includes a brand-new mode, Titan, in which you gradually break giant foes apart into swarms of smaller pieces.

ESPN Pinball
In honor of the World Cup, ESPN has a released a pinball app with some football-themed tables (ahem, soccer for us Americans). There’s also a Basketball table. The new pinball app is full of flashy graphics and boasts pass-and-play multiplayer, global and local leaderboards, and voice-overs from ESPN Sports Center host Jay Harris. It’s a marriage of a TV network, sports, and pinball…if that sounds a little strange, well, it is, but the game looks like some solid pinball fun nevertheless.

Onion News Network
Where would we be without the Onion? In case you haven’t heard of this magnificent publication, the Onion is a completely satirical news network with both an online and a print publication. (Yes, that’s right: you can get a real Onion newspaper.) Their stories are funny, witty, snide, and clever; you’d be crazy not to enjoy browsing them. The Onion’s new app gives you mobile access to the entire Onion archives, including both textual stories and videos. There’s not much more to say: it’s a typical newspaper app. The only difference is that the Onion is anything but a serious, esteemed publication. It’s here to make you grin, and, perhaps, think.

Foosball HD
Illusion Labs has long expressed an interest in touchscreen gaming on larger screens (think back to their tabletop demo of Touchgrind) and now they’ve released an impressive iPad-only title: Foosbal HD. Foosball HD takes full advantage of the iPad’s large screen, transforming it into a top-down view of a foosball table designed perfectly for “local multiplayer”: both you and your friend just play foosball! You can also play against the computer, of course, but multiplayer is the real draw. Foosball seems like a natural fit for the iPad, and it’s great to see Illusion Labs putting the iPad to good use. Sorry, iPhone users; this one isn’t for us.

Disney Launches Combat Racer Split/Second

Disney Launches Combat Racer Split/Second is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

An iPhone version of Disney Interactive’s Split/Second ($6.99) arrived in the App Store today, complementing its recent launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms.

Developed in cooperation with Pure creator Black Rock Studio, Split/Second is an explosive racing title presented in the context of a reality television show.

In the game, players perform stunts and high-risk maneuvers to build a “Power Play” gauge, which can be filled to trigger environmental destruction. Depending on when a Power Play is triggered, players can either open shortcuts or attempt to wreck their opponents. Think Mario Kart, with fewer blue shells and more explosions.

Split/Second includes nine tracks and 15 playable vehicles, along with a four-person multiplayer mode playable over a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or online connection.

REVIEW – “Bring the the fun of Toy Story right to your iPhone in this great arcade game”

Toy Story Mania - iPhone App ReviewThis game is great fun because it brings to life not only the Toy Story world but also the old fashioned carnival games that everyone used to love, the only difference is that you can actually win these games. Toy Story Mania involve shooting, egg tossing, ring tossing and more in order to win tickets to earn prizes.

This app is actually a number of different games rolled into one. You have the Hamm ‘n Eggs egg toss which really gets you to learn fun ways to break eggs. Not to mention the further you progress the more little secrets you learn that can get you extra points. Toy Story Mania - iPhone App Review

Another game is the Green Army Men Shoot Camp where you have to practice your shooting aim by breaking a number of different plates. The Buzz Lightyear ring toss features those adorable green aliens that are just too fun to look at.

There is also Bo Peep’s Balloon pop and Woody’s Shootin’ Gallery to add even more fun. The great thing is that each of these games has their own controls and dynamics so that it really feels like a completely different game from the others.

As you progress through the mini games you earn tickets and these tickets can be redeemed for prizes that can help you achieve higher scores in the games and help you move up in difficulty levels.

Toy Story Mania - iPhone App ReviewThe more you play the more than gets unlocked in the game and not to mention you’ll will want to move up in difficulty and get further along in the stages.

There is even a special bonus for anyone that manages to get to one of the actual Toy Story attractions, so anyone who lives in or is planning a trip to Florida or California will get even more out of this app.

I really enjoyed that the background music was just like the music from the movie because it really brought the fun of Toy Story to the game. The graphics and the game play were very smooth as well which makes this game one that both kids and adults will want to pick up again and again.
