Review – “Explore the animal kingdom in HD!”

Most of us grew up with picture books of animals. As children these books help us learn about all kinds of different animals. Animals’ World is basically a picture book on your iPad, but the great thing is that it costs a fraction of what a physical book does, and it also offers a lot of other great features that you won’t find in any animal book!

When you download this app and open it you’ll see a screen with a bunch of animals on it. You can scroll through all the various animals that are available by dragging your finger across the screen. When you find an animal that you’d like to take an in depth look at just touch it and the app will zoom in on it.

When you have an animal selected there are four buttons you can press, one in each corner of the screen. In the upper right corner of the screen is a “zoom” button. Touching this will zoom in so that you can see all of the detail of the beautiful high-res images. Most of these images are large enough that you have to drag around the screen to see the entire thing.

In the lower left corner of the screen is a button with a ruler on it. Touching this button will show a silhouette of an average sized man next to the animal. This gives you an idea of the relative size of the animal.

In the lower right corner is a button with a globe on it. This button will show you a map of the globe with all of the areas where that particular animal lives highlighted. You can rotate and view other ares of the globe by touching it and dragging around. At any time if you want to go back to a previous screen, the upper left corner of the screen is a back arrow that will take you back.

The strength of this app definitely lies in the both the quality of it’s images and in the large amount of animals that is included. A couple of things I noticed on the other hand are that the globe is a little bit confusing to rotate, and it would have been nice if the app pronounced the names of the animals for small children that can’t read.

All things considered though, I could definitely see this app being a great way to expose your young child to the world of animals! While it would be nice to maybe see a few new features added, the interface is clean and simple, and there really is a lot of content.

As with a lot of “HD” apps for iPad I think it is probably a little overpriced. With that said, it is definitely cheaper than buying a physical book with animal pictures. If this app sounds interesting then what are you waiting for? Click the link below and check it out for yourself today!

If you like software you may already be familiar with the Facebook app Soccer Hero. Soccer Hero 2010 brings a port of this popular game to your iOS compatible device! In case you’re not familiar with it, the basic idea is that you get to take all of the close shots and penalty shots in a game to try and win it.

The menu is pretty straightforward. There are a couple of buttons in the lower left corner that will allow you to set some basic options and learn how to play the game. If you touch the “Help” button you’ll find that there are three different types of shots that you can take in Soccer Hero. These shot types are Volleys, Turn & Shoot, and Penalties.

When you’re ready to get started just head back to the main menu and touch the “Play” button. You’ll be presented with 4 different game types. If this is your first time playing you’ll want to begin with the “Training” option. Training will allow you to practice each of the 3 different shots individually.

Once you get comfortable with all three different types of shots it’s time to start competing! Quick match will allow you to play one match at a time. Matches consist of a combination of randomly different shots strung together. The object is to try to get as many pointsas possible. You will gain points for each goal you score, every shot you take that is aimed at the goal, and even a few points when you miss closely.

The next game mode is the “Tournament.” Tournament mode will take you through the process of competing in the World Cup! You’ll start out in a pool of four teams. In order to advance you have to score 20,000 points in just three games. As you advance further in the tournament you’ll have to earn a specific amount of points each round to go to the next round!

The final gameplay option is the Golden Boot. This mode is a place where you can compete with all of your Facebook friends. Once you log in to your Facebook account and select Golden Boot you’ll be taken to a high score list. This list will show the high scores of all your friends for the current week. To compete just touch the “PLAY” button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Some of my favorite things about this app are the very simple interface, and the social integration. With that said, it would definitely be nice to have some kind of local high score list as well. For just $0.99 though this game is definitely a lot of fun. Especially if you’re a fan of soccer this is an app you may not want to pass up. So what are you waiting for? Review – “A new face on a classic war game type!”

It’s been a little while since I’d played a war game like this one. AirAttack is a shoot ‘em up game where you control a jet that is attacking the enemy! It has a top-down feel much like the old“1942″ game that was popular a long time ago.

One of the things that I really noticed about this game is it’s polished look and feel. Everything from the game menus, to the options and gameplay seemed to be well thought and easy to use. The main menu offers several options, including a local high score list, a settings screen and a help screen.

To start a new game just touch the “new game” button toward the top. You’ll then be asked to select your difficulty and level to start from. When you get everything set just touch the “start” button in the lower right corner of the screen. The game will take a few seconds to load and then it will prompt you to touch the screen to get started.

There are several different control schemes to choose from in this game. You can use everything from just dragging your finger around to tilting your device and even using a “joypad.” These can be set not only from the main menu but also from within a game by pausing and going to settings. You can also adjust music and sound effects volume independently from here if you want.

AirAttack has some very nice 3D graphics built in, but most importantly it offers enough variety to keep from becoming too repetitive. Each time you reach a checkpoint you’re taken to a screen where you can purchase new weapons and options for your plane as you move!

Some of the weapons in this game will feel very familiar when compared to other shoot ‘em up games. With that said there are quite a few unique feeling weapons. These include things like adding wingmen that help you shoot, and even things like radar missiles and more powerful bombs!

This is a great app for someone that likes action, but needs to be able to exit a game and get back to doing other things quickly! If you’re still not convinced about this game though you should head to the App Store right now and check out the 2 levels that the free version has to offer. You won’t be disappointed!

Review – “Find the inner valet within with Park Rush HD for iPad!”

One of my wife’s favorite types of games has always been the “Diner-Dash” style games. Just the fast pace of trying to manage several different things at once is addicting to say the least. If this is the kind of action you enjoy then you might want to check out Park Rush. The basic idea is that you’re a valet that parks cars and you have to try and make as much money as possible.

First off I’d like to say that this type of the game is perfectly suited to the large touch screen of the iPad. While I’ve seen a few games of this genre done on the iPhone/iPod Touch, there is really no comparison between those games and one done on the iPad!

My first impressions of Park Rush were that the graphics and sound are all very polished. In fact I felt they were even more polished that you typically see with a lot of the flash-based games of this type. The music adds to the game, but doesn’t get annoying quickly. The sound effects also add to the experience as well.

The main menu of the app is very simple. It has four buttons that allow you to start a new game, resume your old game, check high scores, or quit the app. The high-scores area of this app is powered by the OpenFeint network, and so the first time you open the app you’ll be asked to sign into your account or to create a new account if you don’t already have one.

When you decide to start a new game you’ll be given the option to select from two different characters: Lillian and Johnny. Once you select your character you’ll be taken to the main gameplay screen. On this screen you’ll see several parking spaces at the top, a sidewalk where your customers line up at on the right side, and a sidewalk where they come to pick up their cars later.

To do your job you have to touch a customer to have them give you the keys to their vehicle. You then can get in that vehicle and park it in an empty parking place. As you park more cars though you need to be ready because your patrons can come back and want their cars at any time!

In order to win and move on to the next level you have to reach your goal amount of money for the day. Your progress and goal are shown in the little box in the upper left corner of the screen. You’ll also find how much time you have to complete that task, and how much time you’ve currently used in the same box.

If at any time you need to pause your game, or you want to save it for play later all you have to do is touch the little tab on the left side of the screen. A small menu slides out and your game is paused. While it is definitely nice to be able to quickly save and exit from this tab that does not, in my opinion, make up for this apps lack of an “auto-save” feature if you exit the app using another means such as the home button.

One other thing that I did notice with this app is that I had it crash on me once or twice. From what I could tell though this is remedied by restarting your iPad so I think the crashes were most likely memory related. A crash like this is even more irritating though when the game does not include any kind of auto-save feature built in.

All in all this game is definitely easy to learn to play, and a lot of fun as well! I would definitely recommend that you give your iPad a quick reboot after installing though if you want to avoid the crashes that I mentioned before. I’m sure these bugs will be worked out though as this app is stilly very new! If you enjoy fast-paced games like these and you’re looking for something a little different then Park Rush is just what you’ve been looking for. So what are you waiting for? Deadlock is a simple but very challenging game that combines puzzle and logic skills to make an interesting and fun App.

The goal of the game is to fit all of your pieces onto a shaped peg-board-like area. There are a set number of pieces and its your task to fit them all without any spaces or shapes being left open. Obviously you move your pieces round by touch, and you rotate by taping, while still holding the piece using a second finger, although I used my two thumbs to play the game.

While I found the graphics to be impressive and polished, unfortunately in some light I found them to be a bit dark. Obviously this is easily corrected by turning up the brightness on my iPhone, but I wish it wasn’t an issue.

The game itself is really quite challenging and while this game definitely keeps your interest for a while, unfortunately its not one of those games you can just pull out and play for a few minutes as you cannot save mid-level as far as I can tell. This is a shame because it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to finish the first level, and several attempts as I couldn’t work on it, save, and come back to it.

While, I’m hoping that this feature is added in upcoming versions, I’m also hoping that maybe they add a few more levels. As of right now there are only 15 (however I’m sure at my pace it will take me months to get through them all). Or, I think that thing game could be really well suited for OpenFient, as they already have a leader-board built it – they could integrate it with other features that OpenFient offers. However even without Openfient, for $0.99, the price on this game is just right.

It’s a solid game with a simple idea, while being very complex and challenging – something I very much enjoy. I think I’ll continue to use Deadlock because it reminds me of a Survivor-Puzzle-Challenge style game, and I want to be really good for any upcoming Immunity Challenges! If you want to test it out, you can always try the Free Version first!

This is a great example of an app that is not only fun, but educational as well! Analogy is an app that plays full screen on both the iPhone and iPad platform, and is designed to stretch your child’s brain as they play! You’ll find that this app will teach problem solving, analytical thinking, and creativity, and at the same time entertain!

To get started all you have to do is touch the “Unlock to start game” button in the lower right side of the screen. The first time you open the app you’ll be greeted by some basic rules that explain how to play. You can turn off this introduction in the settings menu at any time, or leave it on for future reference.

The game itself is set up so that you are given an example of two items that are somehow related, and then one more item with 4 options as to which one it is related to. For example, one of the puzzles in the game is “feather: duck :: fur : ?” The options for the answer are “pig,” “bear,” “rat,” and “swan.” The correct answer in this case is bear because that’s what a bear has on its outside, while feathers is what a duck has!

In the upper right corner of the game screen is a timer that shows how long you’ve been playing the current round. Just to the left of that is your current score/how many questions there are in the current round. Each time you get a correct answer you hear a confirmation from the app telling you that you did a good job. These seemed nice at first, but they do get old quickly. They can be easily turned off while playing the game by touching the speaker icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

That’s the basics of how to play the game. Back at the main menu screen you have four buttons along the bottom. the three on the right will take you to more information on other games by the same developer, to the email app to contact the developer about promotion alerts or to tell friends about the app.

On the far left side of the menus a settings button. From here you have a variety of different settings from whether to show the game rules at the beginning, to the difficulty level and numb of questions. At the very bottom of the screen you can also choose whether the game will use “Pattern” questions or “word” questions.

The difficulty levels in this app are definitely well-suited for children. With that said, this app could easily have been made more appealing to all ages if the developers had included a higher difficulty level and some form of a high score list. I actually was a little surprised that there is no form of high score list currently.

All things considered, this app does very well for its intended audience. So while it may be a couple of features short of being an app for all ages, for $0.99 this is a great way to help your child’s mind develop! If you’re still thinking about it, don’t wait any longer. Whether your already addicted, or you’ve always wondered why so many of your friends are playing, there’s never been a better time to try out one of the most popular games on Facebook! Farmville by Zynga is an iPhone app that interfaces with Farmville. It does this by downloading all your information from their servers, and then rendering it all on your iDevice!

The first time you open up Farmville on your iPhone you’ll need to get your account set up. If you already have Farmville on your facebook account you’ll be able to log in and access your old farm. You can also just create a new farm though if you’ve never played Farmville.

The basic idea of Farmville is that you get to create and design your own farm! As you progress through the game you’ll unlock the ability to grow a variety of different crops. You can also buy all kinds of items including fences, houses, barns, and animals!

In addition to “leveling up” for performing tasks and gaining xp, you also make money by producing and selling things. You can make money by growing trees and selling their fruits. You can make money by growing and selling various gropes from flowers to fruits and vegetables. You can also make money off the various different animals by performing things like milking them, or sheering them, etc.

As far as the look and feel of this app Zynga has done an excellent job making it feel like the web version! The interface is pretty easy to understand, and the app offers explanations of how to perform basic functions in case you can’t figure it out.

In all honesty the only real problems with app have to do with it’s connectivity. Sometimes it takes several tries to get the app to connect and load the information from Facebook’s servers. While some of these problems have been fixed in the latest 1.01 update, some of the problems still persist. For the most part the app seems stable after it gets loaded though.

One of the coolest features of this app is that you can actually receive push notifications when your crops are ready to harvest! One of the more difficult/time consuming tasks in Farmville is keeping track of when you need to get on to take care of the crops you have planted. With Push Notifications you’ll never have to worry about keeping track of this manually!

Overall the performance of this app was adequate. There are definitely a few bugs still in the system, but Zynga is working hard to fix them. While I probably wouldn’t probably recommend starting a new farm with this app until they get a few more kinks worked out, there is plenty here for the experienced Farmville user! Regardless, it can’t hurt to at least take a look at this app because just like Farmville on Facebook this app is available for free. So download your copy today!

If you enjoy inspirational quotes and great artwork this is an app that you will appreciate! Scenic Quotes for iPad is an app that will offer a unique quote every day, and has a variety of beautiful nature backgrounds to put behind them. The primary function of this app is to make your iPad a beautiful addition to your office space when it’s not in use, and it does that quite well!

The first thing you’ll see when you open up Scenic Quotes is “Today’s” quote over the top of a background. At the bottom of the screen you’ll see four buttons for navigating the app. The far left button will show you “Today’s” quote, while the button right next to it will show you the previous days quote.

The other two buttons for this app are the “Random” and “Frame Mode” buttons. Random does exactly what you would expect, it changes the backgrounds and shows you a randomly selected quote in front of that background. Probably the coolest thing about this app though is the “Frame Mode” option. When you enter into frame mode the menu bar will disappear and the app will switch to a new quote and anew background every few seconds!

While this app obviously doesn’t do a whole lot of things, it does manage to do what it was designed for quite well! Something that I was fairly surprised about is that the backgrounds all look great whether they are viewed in portrait or landscape mode! Apparently all of the images have been zoomed in slightly so that when you rotate your iPad there is a little bit of extra space you didn’t already see to smooth things out!

My only real complaint about this app is that it could probably use some more background images. While this is not a huge deal, it doesn’t take very long to get through all of the available backgrounds and to start to see some duplicates! Another cool feature to see in this app might be to add customizable transitions to the “Frame mode” much like what you see in the photo app settings dialogue.

Review – “Wow your friends without hitting the gym!”

While my favorite types of apps are typically useful ones, every once in a while it’s nice to download an app and just have fun with it. If you enjoy humor and playing with photos, then SixApp may be the app you’re looking for! The basic idea is that it allows you to add a layer over photos that makes it look like people have a six-pack that really don’t in reality.

The load time for this app was very good for a photo editing app. When you open it up you’re greeted by a start-up splash screen. When you’re ready to get started just touch the “Start” button in the lower right corner of the screen.

The first screen of the app allows you to select a photo by either taking a new one, using one in your photo album, or using one out of your saved images. Once you select a photo you’ll need to select the type of “abs” that you’ll be overlaying on the image. There are three different types for both male and female abs: “Just a bit,” “RIPPED!,” and “Absurd!”.

Once you select a photo and an type you’ll be taken to the “Adjust” screen. From here you can grab and stretch the “abs” to make them fit your photo. Once you get the abs placed exactly where you want them you can also turn on the “erase” feature by touching the switch in the lower right corner. This will make it so that you can erase little sections that don’t look quite right.

After trying out all the different types of abs, the easiest for me to get to look right were the “Just a bit” abs. It’s also important to note that your results will be very poor if your picture does not have adequate lighting. If the lighting is too bright then the abs will look funny, and if you don’t get enough light then you really won’t see much difference.

The last step when you’re finished is sharing the finished product with your friends! The “Save/Share” screen in SixApp offers three links that will let you share your creation through Facebook, your email, or by saving it to your photos folder on your device!

All things considered, while this app doesn’t have a whole lot of functionality, it does do what it’s designed for very well. Because of this fact, and also because of how simple it is, I think SixApp makes a very worthy “gag” app. So what are you waiting for? Check it out in the App Store today for just $0.99!

If you’ve ever watched Texas Hold’em on TV, then you’ve probably noticed the percentages that they show during play. These percentages show how likely it is that a player can still win the hand. Well what if there was an easy way to view these percentages on yourown? What if you could also learn to use this knowledge to play better poker? Well now you can with Royale Poker Odds for the iOS platform!

There are three main options when you open up this app to the main menu. The main part of the app is the “Odds Calculator.” When you touch it the first thing you’ll need to do is enter in your “hole cards.” Entering cards is a 2 touch process. There is a list of all the numbers/face cards at the bottom of the screen. Selecting one of them will bring up all of the remaining cards in the deck of that number to choose from.

Once you enter in your whole cards see the odds that you will win the hand against all of your opponents. This will vary based on how many players you are playing against though, and so you can set how many opponents you have by touching the arrows in the upper right corner of the screen.

When you’re ready to go on all you have to do is touch the “Board” button in the lower right corner and then enter in the first three cards in the middle of the table. You’ll be shown a list of all your possible “outs” at the bottom of the screen, as well as the odds that you will get them when the next card is dealt! When you finish a hand it’s easy to start a new one by touching the “New Hand” button in the lower left corner of the screen.

The next option from the main menu of this app is the “Bonus” button. This will take you to a screen that has a variety of different pages related to learning strategy. This page is full of great information for novice players, as well as experienced veterans! some of them include strategy on the most commonly played hole cards and learning how to play odds.

In addition to the ability to enter in cards by touching them, you can also add cards by touching the voice recognition button to the left of the other buttons. Once you touch it, it will stay toggled on and you can add cards by just saying their names. I was surprised and just how easy and fast it was to enter in cards via speech-recognition. It was so easy I found that I would rather use the speech-recognition than touch the cards to enter them in!

If you’ve been looking for a good way to learn to play better poker, you would be hard pressed to find a better tool than this app. The interface is simple, and it offers a variety of different types of information and strategies! While $4.99 may seem a bit expensive, sometimes you have to pay a little bit for real quality, and I believe that this app is definitely worth the money. Whether you’re looking for a way to kill a little time, or you need a quick distraction for a child, Hot Chicks : With Friends is a game that is fun for all ages! The basic concept is that you control a “chick” as it tries to dodge all of the fire falling from the sky. While it may sound simplistic, it is definitely a lot of fun!

One of the things that was evident as I tested this game is the attention the developer gives to detail. From the background music, to the menu system and the graphics, everything about this app adds to the fun “cartoony” feel.

The main menu has several different options. There is a tutorial on how to play, and also on how to set up the “multiplayer” feature and play it as well. When you open up the app for the first time you’ll be asked to either link to your existing “OpenFeint” account or to start a new one. OpenFeint allows you to compare your scores to people around the world, as well as get achievements and network with other friends that have an iPod touch or iPhone!

The “Options” menu has a couple of different things. There is the ability to turn the music and sound effects on and off independently which is very nice! You also get to select a “chick” at this menu from three different options!

Once you’re ready to get started all you have to do is touch the “Play” button and select Single player. You’ll be taken straight to the gameplay screen. To control your “chick” you must tilt your device to the left and to the right.

As you move around there will be fire falling from the sky and there will gradually be more of it. It will also speed up as you get further in as well. The game keeps two separate scores, “Time” and “Distance.” These two scores are combined to reach your “Total” score.

When you play “multiplayer” the game is similar except you are able to throw bombs at your opponent to try and make them “lose” first. As with a lot of multiplayer games the connection works pretty good. It takes just a few seconds to connect and brings a whole new dimension to this game!

This game, like a lot of free apps, is supported by advertising. With that said, if you would rather support the developer directly you can choose to remove the ads through a $0.99 in-app purchase! With that said, if the advertisements don’t bother you you can still have the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting the developer by view all of the advertisements!

Fast-paced gameplay and simplicity will make this game a winner for many people. There are very few games that are interesting for adults to play, and at the same time are easy enough for any child to play as well. Hot Chicks has managed to do this and make it look easy! Review – “Turn your iPad into a mobile recording studio!”

Many people immediately write off apps if they have a price tag over about $10-15, but few apps claim to do as much as StudioTrack for iPad! StudioTrack will not only allow you to record audio your iPad, but it will allow to mix it with various other tracks and add effects as well!

When you open up the app you’ll be taken to a screen where you can select a file you’ve been working on previously, or create a new file altogether. In the bottom right corner of the screen are buttons you can use to duplicate your currently selected file, create a new file or delete a file.

Once you select a project to start working on you’ll be taken to the main mixing screen. You start out with one channel, but more can be added easily by touching the “+ Track” button. Each channel has a volume slider, gain knob, a balance knob and a reverb knob. You can also add effects to any channel by touching the “FX” button above all of the knobs and sliders.

If you’re familiar with how recording software works then you’ll be right at home with this app! To start recorder all you have to do is touch the “Rec Arm” button to arm the track that you want to record on. You can mute other tracks as well if you don’t want to hear them while you’re recording.

Something to make note of is that the quality of recording with this app is decent when using the built-in mic on the iPad, but if you want to make serious recordings you’ll definitely want to find a way to get a more high-quality mic plugged in to it.

With that said, I myself was very surprised at just how good the recordings were with the built-in mic and this app! That combined with the ability to add effects and record and combine up to 8 separate tracks make this app an incredible experience for musicians of any level. The $39.99 may seem a little pricey, but you’re not going to find anything as useful as this app for anywhere near that price range. So what are you waiting for?
