There is one great thing about Safari on the iPad for Facebook users – the main website actually works very well on the iPad, without much need for a separate app. Well, if you’re mostly just a lurker who only posts the occasional thing, Facebook via Safari works great. If you’re the type who needs to upload photos, hide or delete posts, or if you need more organization of the features in your Facebook user experience, Social for the iPad is here for you.

Social for the iPad is largely just a wrapper for the Facebook website in app form. All the information appears in similar layout to the website, the only main difference being a different font and some larger buttons. One of the issues remedied by the app is that the main website’s hover over buttons don’t work on iOS Safari devices, so these buttons are now persistent, meaning you can delete your own posts, or hide posts from your main news feed. Tired of seeing your sister constantly post about her Mafia zombies’ crops and can’t wait to get back to a computer to hide them? Fret no longer, good sir or madam.

Social for the iPad does a great job making the Facebook experience on the iPad more complete. It doesn’t alter the experience of using the web site, it only supplements it and gives you handy options to view your messages, notifications, and to make a group of your favorite people to quickly access. As well, when you add someone to your favorites, a prompt comes up with a button that confirms you’ve added them to your favorites, with a button that says “Yay!” to close the box. I appreciate little interface touches like this.

Social for the iPad being largely a wrapper has its problems – often times when you want to pull up something like a profile, a blank page will pop up, and you have to refresh. An issue with the main news feeds not appearing on devices on iOS 3.2.0 was fixed in a recent update, but pages not appearing properly still occurs. Also, this app largely only exists due to the deficiencies of not just Mobile Safari, but Facebook as well: they haven’t updated their web application for iPad compatibility, either. If at least one of these issues gets addressed, and I’m betting on the latter happening first, then Social for the iPad might struggle to have any reason to exist at all.

But until then, the Facebookers of the world need a way to properly use Facebook on their iPad and Social for the iPad goes a long way towards making that experience far more tolerable for the moment. While it needs some work on the technical backend, this is a good choice for iPad Facebook users who need to access a wider set of Facebook features.

Facebook Places, meet InCrowd

Facebook Places, meet InCrowd is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Earlier this month, Facebook announced their much-anticipated Places feature, integrating social networking with geo-locations to create a more personal and unique social experience. Today, Booyah Inc. announced an application that allows you to tell your friends where you are and what you’re doing at that moment, all through Facebook’s Places feature. Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (though not universal), the free application allows you to send out your own location as well as “check in” to see who is near you. Booyah are also the developers of MyTown, which hosts some 3.2 million active users to date.

InCrowd is placed in the Entertainment section of the App Store because of its popularity contest feature and existence of customizable characters known as avatars. Booyah urges you to “strive for the highest popularity” by announcing your location and interacting with others around you, all through your own customizable character. For example, by posting about a venue nearby you’ll gain a number of points which can be used to upgrade and personalize your avatar.

“InCrowd gives players a completely new way to socialize real-time at the places they love,” said Keith Lee, CEO, Booyah. “We’re compressing the barriers between digital social networks and the real world in a way that lets people find their friends or make new ones in a completely unique manner.”

You can download the application for free by clicking on the link below. A Facebook account, also free, is of course necessary to reap the benefits of InCrowd.

Facebook Places Shares The Love With Existing Location Apps

Facebook Places Shares The Love With Existing Location Apps is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Facebook is entering the location-based social networking world with its addition of Places for the iPhone. Just like the “competition,” Places allows you to check-in to a location (either one included in the app or one that you add in yourself) and display it to the world. Through the feature, you will be able to see where your friends are at, as well as tag friends who are coming with you.

Interestingly enough, Facebook has partnered with Gowalla, Foursquare, Booyah, and Yelp for the launch, and plans to include all of their services in some way, shape, or form, into Places. Gowalla and Foursquare are allowing the integration of their location services, as well as their badges, while Booyah is planning an entire MyTown city called InCrowd to work with the service.

Facebook seems to be on top of things on the privacy front this time, stating that, “with Places, you are in control of what you share and the people you share with. You choose whether or not to share your location when you check in at a place. When you check in, you can tag friends who are with you but only if their settings allow it. When you are tagged, you are always notified.”

With every Facebook launch though there are people who are going to complain. The first complaints, brought by the ACLU of Northern California, are about the tagging feature of Places, stating that “Places allows your friends to tag you when they check in somewhere, and Facebook makes it very easy to say “yes” to allowing your friends to check in for you. But when it comes to opting out of that feature, you are only given a “not now” option (aka ask me again later). “No” isn’t one of the easy options.

I’m sure that we will hear much more griping in the following weeks, but Facebook seems to be impervious to negative statements and is still dominating the social networking market. With location apps being all the rage these days, the launch of Places is sure to be a huge hit. If location based social networking is your thing, download the latest update to Facebook as soon as it goes live.

Trillian Review

Trillian Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Cerulean Studios
Price: $4.99
Version: 1.3.2.0

Design Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Features Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

Cerulean Studios first rolled out Trillian more than a decade ago, back in July 2000. Today it exists as an application available on all major operating systems, both desktop and mobile. The iPhone version alone took over two years to create, from the initial alpha development to final release in November 2009.

Presently, Trillian for iPhone supports a lengthy list of clients: MSN / Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Facebook Chat, MySpaceIM, Jabber, AIM, ICQ and Google Talk. In terms of connectivity, the application doesn’t disappoint; even in comparison to the mammoth IM+ client. As with all multi-client applications, Trillian allows you to sign into all accounts at once, preventing the need of having multiple applications at your fingertips.

Getting started is a relatively painless process – you’ll need to first register an account with Trillian (free) before you can begin logging in to all your clients. Once registered, you can begin connecting to your services at will.

Trillian includes all of the expected features for an IM messaging client, such as intelligent push notifications that tell you the contents of a message when it has been received, and low-bandwidth support for those on restricted data packages. Visually, it is a clean and smartly designed application. Contact list groups are collapsable and expandable, names can be edited, avatars can be viewed and a search is present. Of note are the size of avatars: small, which not only reduces data and loading times but also makes more contacts visible without having the need to scroll. Contact information is also viewable with a tap.

The chat windows are similarly sleek. An iPhone SMS style conversation gives Trillian an official feel, and if you’re running multiple chats Trillian’s tab feature means that switching between conversations requires only a single tap at the top of the screen. The keyboard can be hidden. The application also features typing notification support, meaning you can see whenever a user is typing you a message.

In addition to text, photos can be sent between contacts. Photos are first uploaded to Trillian’s servers, meaning a smaller preview picture appears like what an MMS looks like in the SMS application of the iPhone. Buzzes can also be sent to supported clients, to alert the recipient of your existence. If you quit Trillian it will still be running in the background – even on older generation iPhones – so if a message is received a badge will appear on the Trillian icon alerting you. You go can go offline by signing out within the application.

Overall, the client is very visually appealing, and its features are ample for instant messengers. My only problem was that on my iPhone 3G I did find it somewhat slow, particularly in re-initiating the application after it has been closed. Nonetheless, Trillian is stable, secure and well worth the $4.99 price tag.

IM+ Now Supports More Than You’ll Ever Need

IM+ Now Supports More Than You’ll Ever Need is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Journalists are prone to hyperbole, but this title is almost euphemistic. SHAPE Services, creator of the popular IM+ client, are continuing to roll out feature after feature for their mass-market social networking application.

IM+ current supports Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN / Live, AIM (Mac users think iChat), ICQ, MySpace, Facebook, Jabber, Twitter and Skype chat. Outside of the seemingly endless list of clients, the application also provides an equally long list of push notification options, including e-mail arrival notifications from popular clients such as Hotmail, Yahoo! and Google Mail.

In addition to the application being universally built for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, IM+ also features an in-built browser for those who don’t have the ability to multitask – a welcome addition for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch users who are unable to avail of Apple’s much-awaited feature.

The latest update – 4.3 – brings with it a number of new themes and wallpapers, high resolution graphics for iPhone 4 users and VoiceOver support, allowing for speech recognition to be enabled. This last feature will set users back 99c a month.

There’s no doubt that SHAPE Services developers are trying to appeal to everyone. From customizable sounds and animated emoticons to geo-location support and retina display graphics, IM+ is becoming the client of choice for social networking users. It remains one of the top grossing applications for Social Networking – not bad at all for a $9.99 application with almost 4 000 competitors. And to top it all off, there’s a free version too.

Facebook was notoriously late in the game getting their iPhone app into the App Store, and so far there’s been no sign of a Facebook iPad app. So it’s left to third party developers to fill the gap. One recent entry into the App Store is Friendly — Facebook Browser, a usable-enough app that is light on features.

Friendly is a pretty close cypher for what I would expect an official Facebook app to look and feel like. It carries over the site’s blue-and-white color scheme, post layout, and pretty much everything else. What it has over simply visiting Facebook through Safari is readability — everything here is optimized for reading on the iPad, with larger fonts, less clutter, and no ads for Pirate Bay or Mafia Wars. There’s give and take, though, because you also lose the little sidebar touches, like Friends Online or the Information snapshot in a profile. But if you’ve simply not been happy with the way Facebook looks on the iPad, Friendly could offer you a more palatable choice.

Where Friendly falls short of just accessing Facebook from Safari is in the amount of things it doesn’t do. It is limited to feed and message services — no access to games or quizzes, no photo uploading, no chat. In fact, even some types of posts don’t make it into the Friendly feed, like “tagged in an album” posts; while these aren’t the most important things in the Live Feed, they’re still something that should be there, and it’s strange that they are excluded. All in all, a lot is missing from the Friendly browser experience, which will annoy dedicated users who like those features.

There were a couple of times I wanted more in terms of interface, too. For example, I’d love to be able to swipe through photo albums instead of static button taps to progress. Also, there’s no way to refresh the live feed to check for new posts. Only by navigating away and then back can you bring up new posts. A Refresh button would be most welcome.

So, should you buy Friendly, or should you continue using Facebook on the web? It depends upon what’s important to you. If you prefer the fullest Facebook experience possible on the iPad, then stick with Safari. But if you favor readability and less clutter, and if you’re less interested in the more ancillary Facebook features, then Friendly might be the app for you.
