Some folks just need the voice of a military man yelling instructions in their ears in order to get a good workout. If that sounds like the kick in the butt you want to get in shape, check out British Military Fitness.

Designed by Big Ideas Corporation Limited, this is a good old-fashioned break-a-manly-sweat type of workout, complete with running, lunges, sit-ups and push-ups. When you enter the app, create a profile with the icon on the bottom left, including your height and weight so you can keep track of your progress.

On the main “My Workout” menu, tap Instructors to choose between two personal trainers. Both have highly energetic and encouraging voices. Click Set Up & Go to get started. The layout is interesting and easy to figure out quickly. You can choose whether or not to monitor your heart rate and have access to the videos during the workout, and you can also select the duration of you workout – anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes. Choose a Low, Medium or High Intensity Level, and choose whether you want to focus on cardio, strength or a combination of both.

The level at which you’re allowed to customize your workout is seriously impressive. Each workout automatically includes a warm-up and cool-down. I would recommend setting up a workout, then playing through it once without moving. When the trainer gives a new instruction, you can choose to view the video, which pauses the instructions. Very useful, but if you’re actually trying to exercise the constant starting and stopping is irritating. Watch the videos once, then when you’re ready to begin you’ll be able to get through the workout without stopping.

As the workout plays, you can tap pause at any point. However, you can’t rewind, which is another reason I think it’s best to watch the videos before pulling on your sweats and tennis shoes. When a new move comes up, the app beeps to let you know you can watch the video, so turn the video option off before starting your workout to avoid that distraction. I do wish it was possible to rewind in the workout – you’re only options once you start are to pause or go back, so take care not to accidentally brush that Back button while your doing the moves.

Military Fitness also tests you on your sit-ups, push-ups and running, allowing you to easily record your results and view your progress. The impressive level of customization and enthusiasm of the instruction of this app makes it well worth the price.

British Military Fitness is compatible with iPhone, iPad touch or iPad and requires iPhone OS 3.1.3 or later. A small fee was paid by the developer to expedite the publication of this review.

Body & Mind Connection

Body & Mind Connection is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

What you eat, how you exercise, and how well you sleep can have strong and sometimes unexpected influences on your energy, sleep, hunger, mood, and ability to control both your weight and stress levels. B Healthy U’s – Body & Mind Connection is designed to help you easily track these lifestyle factor interactions.

By making you aware of these relationships, Body & Mind Connection can and will help you reach your health and fitness goals. The tracking can be done in less than sixty seconds and the results can be seen in clear, easy to understand graphs that highlight the relationships.

As an example of how this works, with some people, insufficient sleep can wreak havoc with their appetites. For many people, engaging in vigorous exercise can tamp down their appetites. With many people, eating highly processed foods can create an uncontrollable hunger for more highly processed foods. However, all of these relationships vary greatly from individual to individual. By tracking your own lifestyle factors as they interact with each other, you will discover strategies that can help bring your hunger, stress, mood and lack of energy under control.

A unique feature of the app is its diet and exercise recommendations. The diet information comes from Dr. David Katz, head of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and a world authority in nutrition and weight management. He has studied thousands of diets and knows what works, both for health and for weight management. He knows the latest research and many of his tips are likely to be new to you.

The exercise recommendations come from Joe Decker, recognized as “The World’s Fittest Man“ after breaking the Guinness World Records 24-Hour Physical Fitness Challenge.

Encouragement and inspiration come directly from the program’s author, Mitzi Perdue. As Founder of Healthy U of Delmarva, she has spoken with thousands of participants and has seen the joy people have felt when they’ve lost weight, reclaimed their energy, are able to sleep well or have had their moods improve. However, she has also spoken with people so discouraged that they were ready to give up on life. Mitzi created this app because she has seen the positive difference it can make in a person’s life when they discover the tools to help them achieve their fitness goals.

Fitness apps in the App Store have done alright since its inception. While they aren’t quite as plentiful as games, they do tend to do quite well. Apps like iFitness are top 50 mainstays, and others tend to periodically bounce around the top 50 all the time. The problem with fitness apps, and I guess fitness every fitness plan in our obese nation, is that they aren’t instantly gratifying. Games are fun the second you download them, while fitness apps tend to make you work for your gains.

IMG_0743Pushup Fu, from Brain Bakery, is another pushup training app looking to get people in shape… but this time it makes things a bit more fun. The primary goal of Pushup Fu is to slowly train you to do 100 pushups without stopping. This fitness goal is pretty much the gold standard of fitness tests because it trains not only your strength and endurance, but also your pain threshold. Through a 10 week fitness plan, Pushup Fu takes you from doing 5 sets of not many pushups to 5 sets that look like this, 23, 22, 21, 20, 65+. The progressions are quite slow, but although I am only in week three, I do feel quite a bit better about my pushup endurance than I did a month ago.

The key to pushup apps (I reviewed Push-Ups Dojo last week) is the method at which the app tracks your pushups. I suppose an app could just let you enter in your own amounts, but it works out much better when people can’t cheat. Pushup Fu tracks your pushups by judging movement with the accelerometer. By using this method, the app not only tracks your totals, but it also determines whether or not you went all the way down, or took enough time to get a full pushup in. A robot voice in the app counts down your pushups, and instantly informs you when you did a lame half pushup.

The trick to the accelerometer tracking is where to place your iDevice. The game recommends that you use an armband placed just below your shoulder, but I don’t possess an armband for my iPhone. I certainly wasn’t about to buy an armband just for this app, so I got creative. Since a correct pushup has you with a straight back looking straight ahead, I decided to place my iPhone between my shoulder blades, just behind my neck. I had a rubber case laying around, so slipping wasn’t a concern for me, but I could see how an uncased iPhone would be trouble. Be aware of this before you buy the app, because if you don’t have a good place to put your iDevice, the app is quite useless.

On top of basic pushup tracking, the app also includes a battle mode for some extra replay value. It is definitely more fun to challenge your friends, but with global leaderboards and lists of people similar to you (by game score), you can challenge anyone to a pushup challenge over your cellular network. At this point and time, the game is plenty of a challenge, but I could see myself really getting into the battles once I’m doing 100+ pushups in a sitting (God willing… I’ll probably get to 50 and then have my arms fall off).

Pushup Fu is a fantastic fitness app because of the automated fun that it provides. While it still involves working out and exerting yourself, it doesn’t just leave the workout motivation to you. With a 10 week fitness plan and an online pushup battle mode that is quite fun, the app really makes you want to work out and get stronger. Get with the program and get this app already… just make sure that you get an armband or a rubber case so you can actually play.

Learn What Goes On In The Night With Night Recorder

Learn What Goes On In The Night With Night Recorder is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $2.99    Score: 10/10    By Nancy Jones

Do you sleep walk or grind your teeth? Would it make you feel better to know if you did? Night Recorder, developed by iPaguri.com, helps you to understand what goes on in the night and helps you get a better idea whether you have any sleep disorders (Parasomnias). Night Recorder was designed to help people learn a little more about their sleeping habits, which may also benefit their health in the process.

I’ll be honest, I know that I was still sleepwalking (somnambulism) in my late teens and I suspect that sometimes I still do. The only way I’ve ever known this is that other people told me that I was up, walking around and talking. Added to that, my dentist told me that I grind my teeth (Bruxism) in my sleep and my husband tells me that I occasionally snore. With this obvious evidence of sleep disorders, I was anxious to test this app and I was not disappointed.

When you open Night Recorder, it has the look and style of an old reel-to-reel tape recorder. The controls are a little small, but not hard to see or use. Before you get ready for your restful (you hope) night’s sleep you click on settings to determine if you want to tape continuously or create “more” files which create smaller files – one for each sound. The continuous file does not record for hours.  It clicks on and off as it hears sounds and creates one file for the night.  The choice of settings comes down to personal preference.

With my settings selected, I turned the recorder on and went blissfully to sleep.  I got up the next morning and eagerly clicked the “files” button on the top of the recorder. I found two files the first night. No obvious signs of disrupted sleep showed up. I coughed a couple of times and the sound quality was crystal-clear and just a bit eerie. Not satisfied with this lack of sleep disorder symptoms I tried it again the next night. I turned it on, said good night to my husband, and went to sleep.  When I woke up the next morning, I was actually surprised to see that it didn’t record my voice saying “good night.”

I don’t know what kind of gee-whiz technology it uses, but it does not record voices in either setting (more or unique) unless they are accompanied by a non-voice generated sound. This would be handy on those occasions when I do sleep walk (and I suspect I still do) – as long as I make enough noise to trigger the recording or take the iPhone with me wherever I walk. Once a sound triggers the recording, Night Recorder will record any voice created sounds. While awake, I tested the recording capabilities by making a sound and then talking. It did record my footsteps (on a hard surface) and voice as I walked away.

Night Recorder also allows you to transfer files to your PC or Mac. I can see how it would be handy to keep a record of certain sounds, and perhaps, even send them to your doctor or dentist.

I liked the app and will use it from time to time as a way to check in on my various sleep disorders. Night Recorder will offer me a degree of comfort and control in those situations and I suspect others will feel the same way. $2.99 seems like a bargain price for this kind of peace of mind.

Night Recorder is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. Requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later.
