Steve Young Football! is the most surprisingly bizarre game I’ve possibly ever played. I’ve seen some bizarre games in the App Store, but with the title “Steve Young Football!” I was expecting, you know, football.

Instead, SYF is a bizarre football-inspired experience. Basically, you are Steve Young, the famous quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers in their glory years, who has to score touchdowns in various strange circumstances. In some levels you’re trying to score against the undead, sometimes you’ve got angry turkeys, there are landmines — all sorts of weird stuff on the field.

As Steve, you can drag your player anywhere behind the line of scrimmage (that yellow line you see), and then you must flick him down the field into the endzone. For the touchdown to count though, you have to hit a star on the way, and that’s where the challenge is. All of the stars are guarded by the field obstacles (the turkeys and landmines from earlier), so you must flick extremely accurately to score your well deserved touchdown.

Aside from the single player mode, there is also a pretty amazing multiplayer mode that, at least on the iPad, can use two iPad screen as one playing field. Basically, both players have stars on their side of the field that they have to defend with the use of the bizarre obstacles. On the iPhone it’s a bit more sane, with just one screen and a hotseat mode, but the bizarre nature of the experience is still there.

Because of the strangeness of the game, I’m not sure what type of gamer Steve Young Football! appeals to. It is a fun game, but sports fans looking for a real football experience will probably sit for a while scratching their heads. Gamers of all types shouldn’t shy away from Steve Young Football! though, because it really is one of the oddest fun experiences that you’ll ever encounter.

Be sure to watch their promo videos for the game if you are on the fence. If they don’t get you to buy the game, nothing will.

Flick Kick Field Goal Review

Flick Kick Field Goal Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: PikPok

After watching Dave Buehler miss his first career NFL field goal attempt for the Dallas Cowboys, I figured that I would see if I could do any better. Digitally, of course. I played soccer back in the day, but alas, that was back in the day.

Flick Kick Field Goal, by PikPok, actually came out before their other fantastic app, Flick Kick Football (soccer). Doing the reviews in backwards order is a strange way to go, but it’s football season, and the masses want to kick field goals!

Like Flick Kick Football, the game is designed to be easy enough to pick up and put down at a moments notice, but hard enough to remain a challenge. Also like the soccer variety, the goal here is to kick as many field goals as you can in various modes. The modes include a “Sudden Death” mode, an “Arcade Mode,” and a “Time Attack.”

To kick the ball, all you have to do is slide your finger up the screen, simulating a kicking motion. The straighter your flick, the better the kick. If you curve your flick at the end, a little english will be put on the ball. Instead of just straight on kicks though, the game positions you all over the field and throws in a bit of wind, just to make things tough.

Flick Kick Field Goal does present a fair challenge and rates high on the “addict” scale, but compared to PikPok’s other offerings, it’s not quite up to par. The graphics area little muddy, the sound is just a background crowd loop and might as well not be there, and the wind isn’t nearly as menacing as the great soccer free kick wall. Even with the negatives though, FKFG is a worthwhile play if you are so inclined to play a high score field goal kicking game. If you like soccer, though, I definitely would recommend Flick Kick Football.

NFL 2011 Review

NFL 2011 Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Gameloft
Price: $6.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.6 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.74 out of 5 stars

You’ve heard the story and you know it well. NFL 2011 is another football game that tries to pack the entire football experience into a pint sized screen, onto a platform with no physical buttons. NFL 2011 is a bit different in respect to its execution, but at the end of the day, the game is just typical Gameloft.

The name of the game for Gameloft is graphics. Make a game look slick and it instantly gets a certain amount of credibility in the app world. There is certainly nothing wrong with this thought process, and their games do turn out to seem a step ahead of others. NFL 2011, with its super crisp players and fairly nice motion animation, looks darn pretty. Other than a few chops here and there, there’s nothing to knock here when it comes to graphics.

Gameloft’s problem, and I’ve seen this over and over again, is that their games show no originality. If NFL 2011 were the only football game coming out this year, it would be one thing, but knowing that Madden 11 will be out in a few weeks, and that it will be a better, more original game, makes me question things. There are really no features that make NFL 2011 unique. Everything, from the plays, to the moves, to the menus are exactly what you would expect from a basic football game. Not necessarily a bad thing, but again, maybe you should wait for Madden.

The worst part of the experience is that everything felt a bit rushed, particularly in the passing department, but also in the completely drab running game and on defense, which is also incredibly drab. The passing problem is very fixable though, and I think would’ve been fixed if a bit more time was put into the game. When running a play, there are buttons above the receivers that you hit to throw the ball to that player. The buttons though are extremely unresponsive, and desperately need to be fixed. I’ve been sacked a number of times with wide open players down field, just because I couldn’t throw the ball to them.

The moral of this story is that if you are desperate for some football action, Gameloft would love to sell you a copy of NFL 2011. If you can wait a bit though, Madden is going to come out, and it is looking to be a real improvement on mobile football game. There’s nothing wrong with the Gameloft version, it’s just the obvious second choice.

Oh, and I have just one more gripe, and this one really bothers me. Why does every play that goes further than 10 yards in NFL 2011 need a dancing celebration? It’s like Gameloft partnered with the guys that did NFL Blitz and made the game a dance-off. Geeze

Gameloft Beats This Year’s Madden to the App Store with NFL 2011 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

After being the first publisher to launch an NFL-licensed football sim in the App Store last year, Gameloft has upgraded its flagship sports franchise in advance of any updated offerings from rival EA Sports.

NFL 2011 ($6.99) features over 2,000 players from all 32 official NFL teams, and boasts an improved graphics engine with motion-captured player animations.

Gameloft has additionally beefed up the AI, ensuring tougher opponents and smarter decisions among computer-controlled teammates. Accelerometer-controlled speed boosts have also been added to this year’s game, and the included playbook has been expanded with more than 200 plays and a new play editor.

The World Cup may have ended, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep the FIFA fever alive.

Developed by Illusion Labs, Foosball is a table-top football (soccer) sim for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Featuring head-to-head action against the computer with 3 different difficulty levels as well as a multiplayer option (two people on the same device), Foosball is a great little pick-up-and-play game for fans of table football.

With full support for the iPhone 4 retina display with utilization of Open GL graphics, Foosball is easily the best looking game of Foos I’ve seen on the iPhone to date. Great game physics and realistic sound effects round out a solid package.
