I have a confession: I played soccer all throughout grade/high-school and loved it. But when it comes to just watching the game on TV, I can’t do it. Unless I’m in there, soccer is simply not exciting enough to hold my interest. The same holds true for hockey, although I’ve never played it. I just can’t get into watching it on TV.

I bring this up because the best, most addictive, sports games I’ve ever played were soccer (on the NES) and hockey (Sega). Remember the scene in Swingers when Sue and Trent (Vince Vaughn) were playing hockey on Sue’s Sega and fighting over Trent’s gloating/ability to make Wayne Gretzky’s head bleed at will? That scene was a perfect recreation of me and my friends on any given night during that game’s/console’s peak popularity. Not because we were “Super Fan number #99,” but because we loved playing the game.

Furthermore, while I’m not a fan of soccer, I am a fan of well-developed, fun, sports games and Soccer Superstars meets all the criteria possessed by its successful predecessors; and more.

Graphically, the game’s cartoon-anime stye actually adds a refreshing element to the game’s depth (not to mention the genre) that helps deflect the intimidation factor of typical technique-heavy sports games while appealing to players of all types and ages. But, not without a price. The game play’s depth, combined with the many on-screen elements, will no doubt initially confuse and/or frustrate players. However, thanks to the keen minds at Gamevil, who no doubt forecasted this phenomenon, the game features two modes of play: Semi-Auto, the default mode, where your players move automatically, allowing you to focus solely on passing, shooting, etc. and Manual, which allows you to control your players. In addition, the game contains a built-in interactive tutorial which, once viewed, will have you playing the game with ease in either mode.

Soccer Superstar’s sound track consists primarily of one catchy main menu track typical of what you would expect of a game with RPG features/elements. The game’s sound effects are well done: The cheers of the crowd give you the feel of playing in a packed stadium and executing offensive/defensive actions, such as kicking the ball, executing a tackle, etc. are crisp and integrate very well with all other elements of the game.

Game Modes

Soccer Superstars features 6 different modes of play:

  1. Cup Mode
    • Features five different championship cups in which players can compete to win.
    • Winning or placing 2nd or 3rd will earn you a trophy, which can be viewed in your trophy collection.
  2. Dramatic Mode
    • In Dramatic Mode, you can replay the greatest matches in history.
  3. Exhibition
    • Select a team and compete against any other team (70 total).
  4. My League
    • Consists of 33 matches spanning two tournaments: Gamevil League and the International Cup.
    • Allows players to develop their personal player (players begin as a forward in the first season) from a first-person viewpoint.
    • There are 33 matches in My League mode. Gamevil League and the International Cup are the main tournaments of the mode.
  5. Season Mode
    • Players are tasked with winning a championship playing as the manager of a team, through 13 seasons.
  6. Recent Match
    • Continue or resume a paused game/match.

On-Screen Display

Soccer Supertars’ control scheme consists of a virtual joystick, emblazoned with a transparent soccer ball logo and three buttons: A, B and S.

The top, center of the game play screen displays game/match time, the current score and playing teams.

The active player’s name, position and dash gauge are displayed to the left of the center display, while the same information for the opposing team is displayed to the right. The dash feature is used by holding down the virtual joystick or one of the three buttons, depending on the move being executed (offense and defense). Using the dash feature depletes the gauge and, once depleted, must be filled prior to using the feature again. Fouls and yellow cards are also displayed in these sections.

Active players are indicated with a blue arrow, which also shows the active player’s attacking/moving direction. The blue arrow also indicates the condition of your player and will change as the game progresses. A low condition will decrease the player’s abilities, e.g. dash feature, etc.

Open players eligible to receive a pass are represented by an orange triangle. Conversely, opposition players are represented by a cpu icon.

At the bottom of the screen is a mini-map of the game. A player’s team is shown in blue, while the opposition is indicated in red. The controlled player is represented by a yellow box and the ball is displayed by a white cross.

Controls

As stated above, Soccer Supertars’ control scheme consists of a virtual joystick, emblazoned with a transparent soccer ball logo and three buttons: A, B and S. In semi-auto mode, the virtual joystick, while present, isn’t used unless the player decides to override the mode and take control of a player using the joystick. Players can abandon the use of the joystick at any time, at which game play will resume in semi-auto mode. This feature gives players a great amount of control over the players on their team, allowing them to control players manually at will, while re-entering semi-auto mode by simply releasing the joystick.

The virtual joystick is used for manual dribbling (simply move in the direction you want to dribble). In semi-auto mode, players dribble automatically. Dashing is executed by holding the joystick down in the desired direction of movement.

The A and B buttons are used on offense/defense to pass and steal the ball from opposing players. Holding these buttons down will initiate a dash, causing the player to move faster (on defense) or pass a lob shot (on offense).

Super shots are executed with the s button. When a super shot is available/activated, the upper left screen will display/blink “super shoot.” The number of super shots are also displayed on the right of the blinking indicator. In order to execute a super shot, players need simply to tap and/or press and hold the S button, for stronger, faster shots.

On defense, players can steal the ball from their opponent two different ways: Chase the opposition by holding the A button down to apply pressure on the opponent to steal the ball. Simply catch up to your opponent and basically run into/over him while pressing A and that little orb of air is yours.

Players can also use the B button to execute a sliding tackle. Be careful though, as executing one wrong will result in a foul or card. Timing is key.

Super Players can launch a super shot by simply pressing S. When an open shot becomes available (to super and regular players) the S button will blink. The game begins with 4 super players (two of which are locked), each with different attributes and each possessing a different super shot.

During my time with this game, I found the virtual controls to be very responsive. Their placement did not interfere with or inhibit my game play; quite the opposite.

Player Attributes

A major feature of the game’s RPG element is the set of attributes assigned to players and the ability to increase these values, e.g. via training. Each player has four attributes, with values generally ranging from 300-700:

  1. Kick
  2. Speed
  3. Tech: Technical skill
  4. Stm: Stamina

Game Play

Prior to starting a game, players can manage several aspects of their team and play strategy, such as substituting players, viewing opposing team information/players, setting formations, tactics and offense/defense balance and general match settings, such as stadium selection, quarter length, difficulty mode, etc.

I must admit, when I first started playing Soccer Superstars, I was intimidated by it’s depth. However, after viewing the tutorial, I began playing and had no problems serving other teams.

The semi-auto option, combined with the ability to manually override a player, gives me a greater amount of control over players than what is offered in similar titles. In addition, the anime-style graphics lend themselves to a fun, satisfying game play experience; more so than other comparable titles. While Soccer Superstars’ feature-set is very deep, it’s developed in a straightforward, pick-up-and-play fashion, with the casual user in mind. The great thing about this is that it shouldn’t be a turn-off to hardcore soccer fans; rather, the game play should draw them.

Conclusion

Soccer Superstars is well developed, fun and challenging. The amount of control the developers at Gamevil give players over pretty much every aspect of the game, combined with the fun, arcade-style game play give it great replay value. In short, whether you’re a soccer fan or not, you’ll enjoy playing this game over and again. I certainly am.

EA Debuts iPhone 4-Optimized NCAA Football

EA Debuts iPhone 4-Optimized NCAA Football is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

EA’s college football franchise NCAA Football arrives in the App Store today in two different flavors: NCAA Football ($6.99) for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and an enhanced NCAA Football HD ($7.99) specifically tailored for the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4-optimized version of NCAA Football boasts high-resolution graphics suited for the device’s Retina display, eliminating many of the graphical flaws that would be apparent with pixel doubling.

Both versions of the game feature 55 collegiate teams, a season-long single-player mode that simulates all major Bowl games, a fully-featured Team Editor (allowing players to customize everything from jersey colors to fight songs selected from an iTunes playlist), and a multiplayer mode playable over a Bluetooth connection.

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup App Scores

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup App Scores is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: FREE    Score: 10/10    By M. SchustermanESPN

If the info and quality you get from this free version of the ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup app is this high, the upgrade must be fantastic.

Rabid World Cup followers will get plenty of use out of this app. From the main menu, you can search through the up-to-date scores and schedules, the latest news about recent events, and video of game highlights courtesy of ESPN.

You can also easily search for specific info by teams, which are organized by map, list and groups, then add them to your favorites so the latest info about your team is available right on the main menu. Or you can check out the venues to see what games are playing at certain stadiums. There’s even a bracket predictor, where you can earn points by predicting the outcome of games with other ESPN account holders.

The in-app purchase of $7.99 gives you even more, including (for those in the U.S.) live ESPN radio streams of the matches, highlights within minutes of when they happen, video recaps and analysis, and breaking news and game alerts, including customizable alerts.

As far as design goes, this app is really well done, particularly considering it’s both free and only useful for a short window of time. A quick scroll down the main menu will take you to any info you want to find, and the video and audio are both great quality. When you try to choose an option (like alerts) that is only offered with the upgrade, a window opens asking if you’d like to purchase it; other than that, I didn’t experience any ads or annoying pop-ups, so if you just want the free version there’s no advertising harassment to deal with.

This app is definitely a handy one for iPhone users who want to stay connected to the action at all times.

Friday Five: June 18th, 2010 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

It’s Friday! Hurray! Of course, for me it’s summer vacation and Fridays aren’t quite as exciting. But, we’ve still got our traditional sampling of delightful new releases from the past week, so that’s something. Big names like ngmoco and Illusion Labs make an appearance this week, as well as a few more mainstream companies like ESPN. Enjoy!

Godfinger
Godfinger from ngmoco allows you to build up a little world of cartoony followers and exert your godly powers on them. In Godfinger, you can be a kind, caring deity—performing Wonders and helping your civilization prosper—or a wicked demagogue, leaving a path of destruction in your wake. You can control sun, rain, lightning, floods, and fire. As you play Godfinger, your actions shape the terrain and your populace’s opinion. It’s almost ngmoco’s answer to Pocket God. Go on, give it a try and test out your godly abilities…Godfinger, like many of ngmoco’s newer games, is free.

Geometry Wars: Touch
Geometry Wars was already a classic Xbox game, but it made its iPad debut back in March. Now, it’s a universal app, meaning that iPhone and iPod owners can get in on the action! Geometry Wars is a simplistic arcade shooter with basic, geometric graphics and a strong retro theme. It also was one of the first major games to make good use of the dual-stick shooter system that’s so popular on the App Store today. The iPhone/iPad version also includes a brand-new mode, Titan, in which you gradually break giant foes apart into swarms of smaller pieces.

ESPN Pinball
In honor of the World Cup, ESPN has a released a pinball app with some football-themed tables (ahem, soccer for us Americans). There’s also a Basketball table. The new pinball app is full of flashy graphics and boasts pass-and-play multiplayer, global and local leaderboards, and voice-overs from ESPN Sports Center host Jay Harris. It’s a marriage of a TV network, sports, and pinball…if that sounds a little strange, well, it is, but the game looks like some solid pinball fun nevertheless.

Onion News Network
Where would we be without the Onion? In case you haven’t heard of this magnificent publication, the Onion is a completely satirical news network with both an online and a print publication. (Yes, that’s right: you can get a real Onion newspaper.) Their stories are funny, witty, snide, and clever; you’d be crazy not to enjoy browsing them. The Onion’s new app gives you mobile access to the entire Onion archives, including both textual stories and videos. There’s not much more to say: it’s a typical newspaper app. The only difference is that the Onion is anything but a serious, esteemed publication. It’s here to make you grin, and, perhaps, think.

Foosball HD
Illusion Labs has long expressed an interest in touchscreen gaming on larger screens (think back to their tabletop demo of Touchgrind) and now they’ve released an impressive iPad-only title: Foosbal HD. Foosball HD takes full advantage of the iPad’s large screen, transforming it into a top-down view of a foosball table designed perfectly for “local multiplayer”: both you and your friend just play foosball! You can also play against the computer, of course, but multiplayer is the real draw. Foosball seems like a natural fit for the iPad, and it’s great to see Illusion Labs putting the iPad to good use. Sorry, iPhone users; this one isn’t for us.

Favorite 4: Apps for the World Cup!

Favorite 4: Apps for the World Cup! is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

It’s been 4 long years since Italy gloriously hoisted the FIFA World Cup and proclaimed themselves the kings of soccer (football, futbol, calcio, etc.). There’s a deep field of 32 teams who will be vying for the 2010 crown and, while you can never count out old stalwarts like Brazil, Italy, and Germany, many countries have a legitimate shot at the trophy and their place in soccer immortality.

What’s different this time around? Well, this is the first World Cup to take place in the continent of Africa. Many of the players and coaches have changed throughout the years. But, as far as my fellow iPhone enthusiasts are concerned, the biggest difference is that this is the first World Cup to take place since Apple’s miracle device was born. There are several cool apps for just about everything these days, and the World Cup is no exception. Here are 4+ apps that every soccer fan should have on their iPhones over the next month of soccer nirvana…

FIFA World Cup
If you want a game that has all the pomp and circumstance of the tournament, EA’s FIFA World Cup does a good job of incorporating all those elements. As the only officially licensed game, FIFA World Cup lets you choose from 105 different countries on the quest to qualify for the competition and capture the trophy. There’s also a Captain Your Country Mode, where you become a virtual pro on your favorite team and try to guide them to victory. FIFA World Cup may not be the greatest game of soccer that you’ll play, but it has all of the official stadiums and requisite fanfare of the world’s greatest sporting event, including some amusingly blocky-looking fans. Soccer enthusiasts may also want to try X2 Soccer 2010 for perhaps a better simulation of the game, and Soccer Superstars for a more arcade-like approach. Neither have the spectacle of the World Cup license, but they are amongst the best soccer games in the app store at this time. Keep an eye out for Pro Evolution Soccer as well, as the legendary series will soon be making its debut on the iPhone.

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup
ESPN is the official home of the World Cup in the United States, and is offering an iPhone app that can be used to follow all of the latest happenings. Included in the free app is News, Live Scores, Schedules, Video, Stats, History, etc. For a robust $7.99 more, ESPN is promising Live Radio Streams of all the matches, timely in-game video highlights, expert analysis, premium alerts/notifications, and live play-by-play commentary. It remains to be seen if the upgrade is worth a purchase, but it is nice to have all this information included in a handy & attractive app. As an alternative, the Associated Press is offering a World Cup specific app for all of the latest soccer news, and Univision, the official Spanish language provider of the World Cup in the United States, is offering a comprehensive app of their own. It wasn’t that long ago when Univision was the only place to watch much of the best soccer, including the World Cup. Now where can I get a sweet Andres Cantor “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL!” ring tone?

World Cup Trivia Challenge
Want to show off your stunning, yet normally useless amount of World Cup knowledge? World Cup Trivia Challenge lets you do just that in a surprisingly good game. Choose your side and play through a trivial facsimile of the World Cup including qualification, group stage, and the knock-out stage. Better yet, take on your friend at the bar in a head-to-head match of true fandom. Get 3 multiple choice questions right and you score a goal, but every wrong answer counts towards your opponent’s tally. Go back and forth in a timed match to see who scores the most goals, with a tie game going to a true/false penalty shootout. World Cup Trivia Challenge is a modest game, but it has some clever ideas and is just fun. It’s a great time-waster between matches, and an excellent way to score some hard-earned bragging rights.

Vuvuzela 2010
The most important app for this World Cup, however, is hands-down Vuvuzela 2010. If you don’t know about vuvuzelas before this World Cup, you will very shortly. A vuvuzela is a type of horn used by soccer fans, and it is especially prominent in South Africa. The crowds in South Africa will be blaring these horns during every second of every match. It may very well end up being one of the most distinguishing and memorable characteristics of the tournament. The deep, droning sounds of hundreds of vuvuzelas is reminiscent of a swarm of bees, just louder and more obnoxious. There were calls to ban the horns for the World Cup, but they’ll be there and they’ll be ever-present. If you don’t get to pick one up for yourselves, Vuvuzela 2010 does a great job of replicating the experience. Just pick the color of your horn to match your favorite team, turn up the volume as high as it can go, and shake or tap your phone. The effect is pretty genuine, and quite amusing. You might not be able to be at the World Cup in person, but Vuvuzela 2010 brings you that much closer. I suggest blaring it when people least suspect it, for maximum effect.

So, now that you and your iPhone will be prepared for the 2010 World Cup, who’s going to win? European champions Spain may be the prohibitive favorites, but I’ll go out on a limb and say England takes out Argentina in the finals. Okay, I put like zero thought into that, but it would be an interesting final (remember the Falklands?). Besides, England has an Italian coach, so that can’t be bad. Who do you think will go all the way? Post a comment if you have an opinion, or if you’ve found some other useful apps that all World Cup lovers shouldn’t be without…

Oh, and Go USA! Forza Italia! Viva Oranje!
