N.O.V.A. – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance ($6.99)
Version – 1.1.0
REVIEW – “One of the best FPS experiences for any mobile platform!”
I have seen a lot of games that have attempted to take on the iPhone FPS genre, but very few that have succeeded in being more than just eye candy with a half-baked interface thrown over them. Thankfully what you get with Gameloft’s N.O.V.A. – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance is a game with an in depth storyline, great user interface, plenty of weapons and even an online multiplayer experience!
One thing that is difficult to ignore with this game is just how much it feels like the “Halo” genre of games.
Gameloft’s team has managed to make this game feel a lot like those games by using a similar style of artwork, while at the same timemaking the in-game experience something totally different. One thing is for sure though, from the opening movie all the way down to the little details within the levels, a lot of work went into making this
game look and feel right!
Once you get through the opening screens you will be taken to the main menu. The menu is laid out very well. All of the options are easy to read and as a whole the menu is very sharp looking. Perhaps one of the best features of this app is the control scheme settings. While most games offer some type of customization, N.O.V.A offers a wide variety of options from sensitivity control, to a “left handed mode” and 3 different control schemes. It seems that while a lot of games have come up with control schemes that work, this game allows you to use pretty much any of those control schemes that you may choose!
There are a variety of other options that you can customize. Some of the most prominent ones are an “Auto leveling”
feature, “Aim assist,” a “Compass” feature that will help guide you through the levels if you are impatient. Another great feature is the ability to select and customize playlists of the music on your iPhone/iPod to listen to while you play. This is of course balanced with the ability to set different levels for sound effects and music.
Once you have everything set just right you can either get started on the single player campaign or head
straight to multiplayer! The single player campaign offers 13 levels with varying terrain and enemies. I was very impressed with how much fun it really is. There are three different difficulty levels that allow anyone to enjoy this game without getting too frustrated.
The online multiplayer is a lot of fun! The one thing that I wonder is how the “host” system works in it. The reason I am asking is that I seem to lose my connection to the host more than half the time when playing online. It also didn’t seem to make a difference whether I was using a WiFi connection or a 3G connection. That being said, online play really is a lot of fun. The maps are packed with all kinds of great weapons and powerups which add a lot to the gameplay.
With all of that said, this game has really set the bar high for FPS games! If you have been waiting for just the right game to come along in this genre the wait is over! Download N.O.V.A. today for just $6.99 if you’d like to play one of the premier games in the App Store. This game will not disappoint you!

Following on from Doom Resurrection, the slightly revamped, slightly modernized version of good ol’ Doom, iD Software thought you’d like the classic experience, and so this week they announced the release of Doom Classic, for iPhone (and iPod touch) – and this time my friends, it is the Doom we all know and love. You won’t find polished graphics here. This is the classic 8-bit Doomfest you’ve been waiting for. Nostalgia overload.
If you’re reading this you probably know what Doom is, but believe it or not there are still people out there who have yet to experience it. Doom was introduced in 1993 as a science-fiction horror based FPS, and when first introduced was looked upon as the first of it’s kind, sparking what many see as the thriving FPS genre we have and buy into today. This release takes everything you loved about the original Doom and shrunk it down to fit inside your pocket!

The game sees you play through 36 missions, in 4 episodes. The first 3 episodes are the original ones you know and love. These include: Knee-Deep in the Dead, Shores of Hell, Inferno, and the latest – Thy Flesh Consumed. Playing the actual game is simple enough. Controls are touch based, and you have a three different control options.
The first configuration (and the default when opening the game for the first time) is a movable joystick-like area located on the left-hand side of the screen. This controls your characters directional movement. Opposite this is your ‘tap to fire’ button. The second configuration sees a d-pad introduced into the left side of the screen, which is static. Opposite this is the right is the joy-stick which controls both vertical and horizontal movement, and above this is the ‘tap to fire’ button. The last and final configuration for controls in Doom Classic sees a navigation ‘wheel’ added (on the left), allowing control of your camera view, alongside a full d-pad (on the right). On this configuration, your ‘tap to fire’ button stays in the same position as on configuration 2. When moving a control element around the screen, once you lift your finger up, the control snaps back into the corner. This is great as it means you don’t have control items cluttering up the screen.

Moving in-game, while the controls are easy to use, and having 3 different configurations to choose from definitely helps, gameplay can be a bit fast – I’ll explain what I mean by that. I’m not referring to the length of the game, but instead the ’speed’ your character moves around the maps. In my experience it can get a little nauseating. But this is really all I can fault in this port. While it doesn’t ruin the game, you’ll likely find it a little harder to reach and navigate to places you’d like to because of it.
In-game stats like your health, amount of ammo remaining and percentage of armour you have remaining are displayed in a static bar on the bottom of the screen. Tapping the animated character head thorws up your weapon inventory. Available weapons in the game include: Your fist, Pistols, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rockets, Plasma, BFG, Chainsaw and the DBLShotgun. Ammo for all of these can be picked up in game.
If you’re not a big FPS fan, graphically you might find the game disappointing. There are no flashy visuals here. Just pure, true, “bloody” Doomilicious FPS. Graphics resemble that of Duke Nukem, sporting that ‘pixelated’ look you die-hard Doom fans craved all those years ago.
There are a few welcome changes though, the first being multiplayer ability. Doom Classic offers two multiplayer modes including: Deathmatch and co-operative multiplayer which in trun supports up to 4 players at any one time, via Wi-Fi. The game also features the original Doom soundtrack which plays throughout, although this can also be disabled allowing you to use your own music from iPod.app.
Overall, Doom Classic for iPhone is a worthy port of a retro gaming classic. A nostalgia title recommended for fans of the franchise, iD Software have managed to pull off bringing the game to the iPhone, in a user intuitive and graphically pleasing way. While I found the game could do with a few more control tweaking options, this can be overlooked (in a way), by the amount of content packaged within this port, and your bang for buck.
iPhone App Review – Eliminate Pro
iPhone App Review – Eliminate Pro is a post from: Best Iphone App Review Website
Eliminate Pro (Free)
Version – 1.0
REVIEW – “A true multiplayer FPS for free!”
I was definitely skeptical when I saw the claims that this app was making. That skepticism quickly
changed after downloading and playing Eliminate Pro. Not only does this First Person Shooter have live online multiplayer, but it also has a system for leveling up, buying weapons, and is completely free!
When you open this app for the first time you will view a video that describes the basic story behind everything and how the menus work. One of the first things I began to notice is the
attention to detail in this game. The story is excellent, and the game itself offers a wide variety of options for improving your character as you level up further through the game. You can buy weapons and armor as well as upgrade those that you already have.
The graphics and sound in this game are extremely
polished, especially for this game being completely free. The main menu is very sharp and has three main option s to select from: “Play,” “Gear Up,” and “Options.” I would definitely recommend that before you get started that you go and look at all of the settings that are available in the “Options” menu. There are several settings that you will probably want to modify
slightly in order to make the game easier to control, such as the “zoom” feature and the “auto-fire” setting.
The way the scoring system works in this game is that you have a certain amount of “Energy” that is slowly recharged
all the time. Every time you play a game you will use some of that energy and you will gain credits for various things like killing opponents. If you do use up all of your “Energy” you can continue to play matches but you will not be able to gain credits for them. Because of this you probably want to play a few games with “Bots” and get your controls tweaked before you use any energy on matches.
The actual gameplay is a lot o fun once you get used to the controls, although it can be frustrating to try and kill opponents that jump around a lot. What really adds to this game is the ability to upgrade and level your character up. Once you have earned some credits by playing matches you should head to the “Gear Up” section of the main menu. From here you can buy “Power Cells” that will increase your energy. These cost money but can help you upgrade things a lot faster if you do choose to go this route. You can also use the “Credits” you earn or buy to get new weapons and armor using the “Buy Gear” section. In the final area of the “Gear Up” tab you can also go upgrade and equip the things you have already purchased in the “Inventory.”
I’ll have to admit that I was stunned at how well this game played for being a free app. The online play is excellent, and it even allows you to play “Private Matches” with friends as well as using the “Global Match” feature that automatically places you in a game with people of similar skill. If you have been hunting for a good time-killer, but you are on a very tight budget, then look no further than this app. You just can’t do any better than free, especially with an app of this quality. So what are you waiting for? Download this app and start “eliminating” opponents today!

id Software’s Doom Classic Premieres in App Store
id Software’s Doom Classic Premieres in App Store is a post from: Best Iphone App Review Website
id Software’s genre-defining first-person shooter Doom has been resurrected for the iPhone. Doom Classic ($6.99) includes all of the weapons, enemies, and level layouts of the original game, and promises to bring back many fond memories of a youth spent shotgunning through Hell’s armies.
Doom Classic allows users to pick from three customizable control schemes, each created by id co-founder John Carmack. Like in id’s previous iPhone release Wolfenstein 3D, players can move and strafe using touch or tilt controls, or a combination of both.
Doom Classic includes all three of Doom’s original episodes, along with the expansion episode Thy Flesh Consumed, for a total of 36 levels. The game also includes Deathmatch and Cooperative multiplayer modes, playable by up to four players over a wireless internet connection.
Touch Pets: Dogs and Eliminate from ngmoco Approved
Touch Pets: Dogs and Eliminate from ngmoco Approved is a post from: Best Iphone App Review Website
ngmoco:)’s hotly anticipated titles, Touch Pets: Dogs and Eliminate, have finally made their way past Apple’s approval process. For those who don’t know, Touch Pets is a pet sim that focuses on raising and training “the ultimate puppy” and also includes a wide array of social features. Eliminate, meanwhile, is a multiplayer online first person shooter. Both games will be free (yes, you read that right!) but will feature In-App Purchases. Note that IAP’s won’t be necessary to play the game; you’ll just need them to unlock extras. With Eliminate, for example, you get to play a certain number of games per day before your “energy” runs out; you can play without energy but you won’t be able to earn any in-game credits.
While both apps are approved, don’t get too excited: ngmoco is doing a Canada-only release first, to make sure that “all Eliminate systems are online and all puppies are house broken before unleashing upon the world,” according to their tweet. It’s an interesting strategy that will have non-Canadian fans grumbling, but given that ngmoco is releasing two extremely hyped games with heavy online components at once, it makes sense. Once the games make their USA debut, we’ll post our reviews; for now, you can check out our preview coverage from earlier this month.
Also, it generally takes a few hours for new apps to show up in the App Store, so if any Canadian readers don’t see them yet, don’t worry! Get Eliminate here and Touch Pets here.
