The problems I had with this game weren’t so much the game itself, but the lack of instruction and intuitiveness, which is quite contrary to how it’s described. Virion SD, designed by Stigmergy Games, is supposed to be a game in which you fight off a mutating virus. What it comes off as is more of a timing game that isn’t quite as challenging as I’d hoped.

The app opens to three players numbered 1-3, which you can change and upload a personal picture to. Tap one to see the selection of levels, all of which are locked but the first. Tapping that first level takes you to an image of a brain divided into sections. Tap the first to start.

What you’ve got is a globe with one arm, and later, many arms, sticking out of it. The end of each arm has a certain shape. Various pieces fly randomly around the screen, which have shapes that fit the arms like puzzle pieces. Tap a shape to freeze it, then line it up with the arm (which is moving). Once you’ve got all the arms lined up with a piece, tap the globe and the arms sort of suck the pieces in. Depending on the level, that could be the end, or you could be faced with more arms.

The music is thumpy and interesting, but the graphics are the same for each part of the brain, and I lost interest quickly. What frustrated me was that I had to research outside of the iTunes page and the game itself to learn how to do certain things. For example, there’s a time limit on each level, but no exit or pause button. I thought there was none, and the only option to stop was to exit the app. Then I read on the Virion “Hints” page that you can quit (not pause) a level by swiping five – not four – but five fingers on the screen. I’ve never encountered an app with a five finger swipe, yet no four finger swipe, and it strikes me as very counter-intuitive.

Something else I wondered was what was the point of having a timer if I never know how many legs are going to keep sprouting out of the globe. Once you’ve successfully lined up pieces with the arms, a number briefly appears in the center of the globe. It turns out this number tells you how many legs are left – something that is not actually explained within the game.

Overall, it’s not a bad game, and there are a lot of levels. However, I don’t feel it delivered the tension and excitement promised, and it was a bit confusing in the beginning.

Virion SD [iTunes link] requires iPhone OS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.

Review – “Creative twist on Brick-breakers”

When I got my first iPhone, one of the first games that I lookedArkinvade 1 200x300 Arkinvade iPhone App Review for was a “block-breaker” game. Since that time I have seen a lot of these games. While most of them are fun, after a while they all feel kind of the same. While at first I wasn’t sure if I liked it, Arkinvade definitely has a different feel to it. From the way the ball reflects off the paddle down to the large Arkinvade 2 200x300 Arkinvade iPhone App Reviewvariety of power-ups and creatures attacking, the game manages to stay interesting.

The first time you start up Arkinvade you’ll want to link it to your OpenFeint profile if you have one. This will allow you to compare your scores with friends and people all around the world. There are also several achievements that you can work to get and show off as well.

The main menu was a little bit confusing at first, there is a play button in the center of the screen with the OpenFeint logo just below it. At the top of the screen is where it gets a little confusing. There are 6 little buttons that were a little bit hard to see at first. There’s not much description on them, but touching them will bring up various menu Arkinvade 3 200x300 Arkinvade iPhone App Reviewoptions that cover everything from the control scheme, to the sound effects and and options to restore a game that you have previously quit out of.

Once you’re ready to get started just touch the play button and you’ll be taken to the main game screen. The default control scheme is to use the accelerometer to move your paddle, and all 3 controls schemes have little buttons in the lower right and left corners to make the ball start moving. The other two control schemes either give you 2 directional buttons or allow you to control your paddle by touching and dragging it.

The object of the game is, as expected, to destroy all of the blocks on the screen. As you play the game you’ll find that some blocks are destroyed in one hit, while others may take several. Throughout the game you’ll also find large green blocks that release bad guys when they are destroyed. The bad guys fire bullets that freeze your paddle for a short time and come after you just like the bad guys in Space Invaders.

One thing that I noticed as I was playing this game is that the physics seemed a little different than you would expect in most of these games. If the ball is already moving from left to right pretty fast and you Arkinvade 4 200x300 Arkinvade iPhone App Reviewbump it with the left side of your paddle, the momentum that the ball has effects it a lot more than in most games that I’ve played. This makes the game interesting and adds a little more challenge to it as well.

The best thing about this game though is the variety that has been added to the gameplay. There are tons of different power-ups that do all kinds of things from making your paddle bigger, giving you more than one ball to destroy blocks with, set your ball on fire and make it literally cut right through all of the blocks, and even give your paddle firepower temporarily. Beware though because not all of the icons you see will help you. There are a few that will make things more difficult and/or even kill your current life.

Overall, I think that this game has the potential to be a real top-seller if just a few small issues are addressed in future updates. The first is that the game really needs a screen that showsArkinvade 5 200x300 Arkinvade iPhone App Review you all of the icons that you can collect and tells you what they do. It’s a little bit frustrating to grab an icon that you’ve never seen before and have it kill you.

The second thing is that the game needs better support for continuing your game. It took me a while to even figure out that it was possible. This could be easily remedied by either asking the user if they want to continue their previously exited game, or by adding quick-launch multitasking that brings up the app where you left off. Although just changing the menu a little bit and making it more obvious what options you do have would work just fine as well.

With that said, the game is a lot of fun once you get everything figured out, and it is currently available in the iTunes App Store for just $0.99. If you’re a fan of brick-breaking games, this is one of the most engaging games I’ve played of that type. If you’re still reading this I’d encourage you to click the link below and check it out in the App Store today!

New iPhone App Helps You Get Creative Between the Sheets

New iPhone App Helps You Get Creative Between the Sheets is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Looking for a little inspiration in the bedroom? As unlikely a source as the iPhone might be – there truly is an app for everything these days.

Developed by WebTechies, The Sex Game is a new app that puts your knowledge of intimate positions to the test. Although touting itself as an “interactive sex position guide”, the app is more game than guide, but is a pretty cheap initiation to the kamasutra for those so-inclined to its teachings.

The Sex Game gets started by the player selecting either a male or female and the level of difficulty (there are three), each with different positions to learn.

From there, you can select the location of your digital rendezvous (i.e swimming pool, beach etc), as well as select some background music for the affair. From then on you’re ready to get started with the ‘game’, and the action is well….17+.

It’s all pretty cheesy and low-fi, with simple graphics and corny music but it’s a bit of a laugh for $0.99.

The Sex Game is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Miriel the Magical Merchant HD Review

Miriel the Magical Merchant HD Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: 10 Tons

Overall Rating: 4.33 out of 5 stars

A sign of a good Game App is one that prevents you from writing a review about it, as you’re too busy playing it to get around to write it up. Miriel the Magical Merchant HD is just such an App. For fans of Time Management Games (like Diner Dash or Cake Mania), this is a goldmine. While obviously people who are not a fan of this style of gameplay will automatically steer clear, finding a decent Time Management game can be difficult sometimes. Developers really need to know the balance of the game, and lucky for us, 10 Tons does a great job with Miriel.

The game starts out with a sort of Story Mode, about how Miriel’s father mysteriously left, and she’s working at the store to save up to go to Magic School (or something along those lines). The object of the game is to serve your customers in a timely manner. This begins quite simply as you only have a few items for sale that can be requested. The games difficultly level slowly increases with ‘baked items’ (where you have to combine two or more ingredients in the oven) that take 2x or even 3x the amount of time to prepare. Your goal is to serve as many customers as you can, as quickly as you can, to reach your daily (or Master) goal for money each day.

Nearly every new day offers a unique challenge or reward. Sometimes you’ll get a new item for sale, or sometimes you’ll get a new customer type. At the end of each week you move on to another town and get the chance to upgrade your equipment by playing a matching mini-game. A nice feature of this App is that you can go and play the mini-game on your own at any point if you want to from the main menu. There are fun little features like The Haste Machine (which speeds up your cooking, and movements) which you can use by collecting gold wings, by serving customers quickly.

As you progress, the items get more and more difficult, and you get more and more items. While you frantically run around stocking, baking and serving, you’ll have a blast. The only feature I would add is the ability to quit or restart mid-level (as sometimes you simply get too far behind) and the ability to re-play a level of your choice.

As addicted as I was to Cake Mania, I think that Miriel has taken the cake (no pun intended) as my new favorite game of this style. The art work is stunning, and playing on my iPad is a breeze compared to PC or DS gameplay. This game is a bargain at this price point, and I highly, highly recommend it.

I like to think of myself as a well-rounded gamer. But one of the game genres I have never been strong in is the Japanese danmaku, usually translated as “bullet hell.” So, for me – as I suspect it will be for many a more casual iOS gamer – Cave’s recently released Dodonpachi Resurrection may be something of an introduction to the genre.

And oh, what an introduction! Dodonpachi Resurrection is far and away the best top-down shooter I have played on my iPod Touch, and possibly one of the best top-down shooters I have ever played, period. It’s a wild, over-the-top action shooter that will leave you both baffled and exhilarated at the same time.

If you’re new to the genre like I am, the game may take a little getting used to. You begin by selecting a mode – iPhone or Arcade (I recommend iPhone) – then selecting a ship and, if in Arcade mode, selecting a combat style. A few seconds of cutscene later and … bam! The whole screen becomes filled with bullets, missiles, explosions, and enemies. It can be a bit overwhelming to the new player, until you are able to grasp the flow of the game.

Once you get used to it, though, it’s a whole lot of fun. Controls are simple touch; you slide your thumb to move the ship, tap buttons to change weapons, spin a frantic circle to charge up your hyper cannon. There’s a scoring system in place that rewards multiplyers and the collecting of badges released from destroyed enemies – still a bit arcane to me, but important if you’re going to try and improve your score.

It all runs smoothly, embracing its fast pace and letting you slide comfortably into the destruction zone. And the graphics presentation is well executed. Even with the sky full of munitions, you can generally keep track of what’s going on — though sometimes the screen does become little more than a fugue of colors. It’s finely managed chaos, set to a funky sci-fi soundtrack.

Do be advised: the game sports high technical demands, such that any device older than an iPhone 3GS will not run it properly. It also comes in at a relatively short seven levels for its $9 price tag; so if you are the more casual gamer who only expects to play through once, you may find the price a bit steep.

I think that you will want to play it again, though. I know that I am certainly enjoying it enough to keep going back, doing my best to fight my way up the leaderboards (I’m currently 10,775th … sigh … ). If you have the right device, and if you don’t mind the price, then you must play Dodonpachi Resurrection.

As a final note: after playing through it myself, I introduced the game to my six-year old son, who loves to play “shoot-em-up” games. He spent the next twenty minutes giggling over the screen, making shooty noises from the side of his mouth and occasionally noting with glee, “You get to blow everything up!” I couldn’t have put it better myself.
