Tank Battles in Suburbia by CloudScissor is so comically audacious that any criticism against its gameplay is automatically forgiven by the fact that, as the player, you’re being allowed to drive tanks through neighborhoods, roll over cars, shoot missiles at town-homes and demolish both vegetation and police cars alike. Who comes up with the idea to throw tanks into places called Montclaire, Glen Ridge and The Turnpike and fight each other while creating massive amounts of collateral damage? CloudScissor, that’s who. And kudos to them. The upper-middle-class always bugged me anyway.
Tank Battles is not without its problems, though. The controls are a little deceptive at first. Made to resemble a classic analog d-pad, one automatically assumes that the tank will travel at one speed in the direction indicated by your position on the control. Not so. Speed is also controlled by the d-pad, with the fastest on the outside and the middle a full stop. This wouldn’t be so big a deal if it weren’t for the fact that you’re trying to avoid running over cars and houses at the same time as dodging missiles and destroying tanks. Maneuverability is everything.
At times the aiming seems a little off. Several times I pointed the tank what I thought was straight at an enemy tank and the missile veered off in a different direction.
Despite these hick-ups (and the fact that I apparently suck at the game) Tank Battles in Suburbia is a fun time waster. If you’re a competitive gamer, you’ll have fun stacking up collateral damage cost and posting high scores online. If you’re just casual, you’ll have fun setting up your own custom game and going after enemy tanks in your free time. The graphics are a little old-school, but, again, this is a game that doesn’t need a lot of flash and grandeur. The premise itself carries the game to anyone’s favorites list.
