DiveI personally believe that dragons are an underused creature in video games these days. Sure, everyone loves zombies, and ninjas, and pirates, and maybe a few other things, but who doesn’t love dragons? They make a great foe, and an even better buddy. Who’s gonna mess with you when you’ve got a dragon to back you up? Well that’s exactly the situation you find yourself in when playing How To Train Your Dragon (HTTYD), the new free flight game from Glu. Based on the forth-coming animated film from Dreamworks, HTTYD is brought to us by the makers of Glyder and Glyder 2 and shares many similarities to those games.

Playing as the main character of the film Hiccup, you spend your time flying your dragon around the varied game world, completing tasks, discovering locations and collecting items. Movement is governed through tilt controls, allowing you to guide your dragon by tilting forward to dive, backwards to climb etc. Rather than in Glyder where you had to find upward drafts to raise your flying machine, in HTTYD you are able to climb courtesy of your dragons flying abilities, allowing quicker and easier access to many of the games locations. The controls work very well, and it is clear that with each successive flight game, Glu are really nailing down their tilt controls.

MapThere are 3 different locations to fly between, each with varying landscapes. Following the story mode will allow you to explore each of these, but there is nothing stopping you from flying off towards a distant landmass from the start. Dotted around each world are various collectibles which offer a distraction to the story mode (although collecting items is often what you find yourself doing while following the story). There are also a number of achievements for completing tasks whether it be exploration, item collection, or a combination of different things.

Unfortunately, there is nothing new here. The game is essentially a watered-down Glyder 2, maybe even Glyder 1, with a movie tie-in. The landscapes in How To Train Your Dragon are quite plain in comparison to the varied, colourful settings in either of the Glyder games, and there are fewer of them. In general there just seems to be less to do. It’s nice to fly as a dragon for a change, but that’s pretty much all this game has over the Glyder series. It’s a fun little game for a while, but I’d find it hard to recommend to anyone but real fans of the genre. The real target market is young fans of the film, who will probably get plenty of enjoyment out of the game.

However, this game is yet to be given a price (at time of review) and it’s possible that it may be free as there are pop-up adverts in-game. In that case it may compare well to Glyder 2 which will set you back $3. I’d say though, that if you find yourself an hour into How To Train Your Dragon and still enjoying it, then spend the money on Glyder 2 to enjoy Glu’s market leader in this genre.

Glyder2-2Glyder 2 is a fun casual flying collection game and a follow up to one of our favorite games of 2009, Glyder. It’s easy to play for hours at a time, or just a few minutes. Your main goal is to fly around these amazing worlds and gather glowing jewels. Throw in the occasional mini game or quest and you’ve got a game that’s unique, fun, but leaves you always wanting more.

Glu first released Glyder early in 2009. It was a simple game that got a much greater response than most expected. It was a compelling game that really sucked you in with it’s play at your own pace style of gameplay. They have expanded on that nearly perfect formula in this version, Glyder 2. Along with the old favorites they have thrown in some new types of quests, more like timed mini-games, and all new worlds to explore.

The main goal of the game is fun enough. It’s exploration. There are lots of great little hidden areas to fly around. Why exploring the different worlds you search out and gather jewels. You will also run into and need to complete certain mini-games that will unlock other worlds or parts of the main mystery. These are much more varied from the last Glyder and all were challenging without being too difficult.

The story of the game, much as the first, is that you are trapped in some sort of a dimensional rift. To get out you have to gather jewels which will lead you to parts that will let you open the transport back to your dimension. Basically a collection game. Along the way you’ll also gather customization options such as different outfits (just for fun), and different sets of wings. The different sets of wings have different properties and can make a huge difference in your flying ability.

Technically the game is fantastic. The graphics are great, the controls are responsive and well done, and the soundtrack is just fantastic. The only real hick-up I found was the occasional heavy frame dropping on the mushroom world of Sporelle.

All in all completing all of the gathering, the goals, the achievements, everything is quite a task. But a fun one. Here’s a short look at the game from Glu.

Glyder 2 continues in the footsteps of the surprise hit game Glyder and does so well. I really can’t say enough about this game. It’s well made, easy to get into, and hard to put down. Adding new game play elements while keeping the main elements just as perfect as they were in the first game. I hope we’ll see some expansion on this game. Downloadable content in the form of new worlds and quests would be fantastic. If not, well I’m already looking forward to Glyder 3.

And if you are like me, you will just rush through the game the first time gathering all of the jewels and finishing the main part of the story. But now, I’m working through all of the other little quests and such to get as close to 100% complete as I can. Once that’s done I think I’ll delete the app, reinstall it, and start it over again. Yeah, I like it that much.

Well worth the $2.99 price tag.

Glu’s fantasy-themed gliding sim Glyder made quite an impact in the App Store earlier this year. After it peaked at #3 in the paid top ten list, Glyder remained a consistent seller, attracting hundreds of positive customer reviews.

Today, Glu launches Glyder 2 ($3.99), a sequel that features improved graphics and new challenges. Glu claims that the game offers a significant amount of replay value with 24 goals, 450 collectible crystals, and 40 achievements. Glyder 2 also includes a character customization feature, along with new minigames and puzzles.

For anyone who may have missed the first game in the series, Glu has dropped the price of Glyder to 99 cents. A free demo version of the original title is also available.
