Rockstar Games’ flagship open-world adventure franchise has been updated and enhanced for today’s release of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD ($9.99) for the iPad.

According to Rockstar, the new iPad version of Chinatown Wars boasts “intuitive touch screen interface with multiple custom control settings,” along with “enhanced graphics, higher polygon count vehicle and building models, and enhanced lighting and explosion effects,” that take advantage of the iPad’s larger screen size.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars HD otherwise features all of the content found in the original iPhone version of Chinatown Wars, putting players on a quest for revenge on the streets of Liberty City. Chinatown Wars features a lengthy quest that spans dozens of missions, and includes multiple sidequests and minigames throughout.

The multiplatform journey of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars continues with the announcement of an HD version for Apple’s iPad. It promises new and “updated” graphics, 50 missions, sidequests and the ability to play one’s own music for the soundtrack.

Chinatown Wars was GTA‘s first outing on Nintendo DS, and by all critics’ accounts, was remarkably successful even alongside the work of experienced DS developers. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews — but sold only 90,000 units in its debut month, shining a spotlight on whether Mature-rated content is viable on Nintendo’s handheld.

Although neither Rockstar nor publisher Take-Two has disclosed life-to-date sales for Chinatown Wars on DS, Take-Two CEO Ben Feder has said the company’s “very proud” of the game, and cited an achievement: it’s accounted for half of M-rated sales on the DS platform.

The company has been bringing Chinatown Wars to other platforms since; it launched a PSP edition that was widely-acclaimed (consumer site GameSpot called it ‘even better than the DS original‘) — but it failed to chart in the U.S. monthly NPD nor the UK top 40 charts within its release period.

When it released on iPhone in January of this year, it consistently made the App Store’s top 10 for numerous weeks following its release, and a free “Lite” version of the game regularly appeared among the top-downloaded free apps. The iPad version of the game arrives September 9, and will be priced at $9.99/£5.99.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Debuts for iPhone

With little fanfare, Rockstar Games brought one of gaming’s biggest franchises to the App Store over the weekend. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ($9.99) is an iPhone port of Rockstar’s most recent handheld entry in the GTA series, previously released for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable.

Chinatown Wars is a free-roaming crime drama set in the streets of Liberty City. Players take on the role of Huang Lee, a man robbed of a valuable family heirloom and left to die. Seeking revenge, Lee must gather information and build a reputation by doing odd jobs for the criminal underworld.

Of course, in GTA tradition, this involves creating all sorts of fun antisocial mayhem. Stealing cars, murdering pedestrians, and dealing drugs are all part of a normal day’s work in Liberty City.

The iPhone version of Chinatown Wars retains the overhead-view action of previous ports, and includes all of the touch screen sequences from the Nintendo DS edition. Players must complete touch-based challenges to hotwire cars and pay tolls at toll bridges, among other things.

App Store customer response indicates that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is every bit as big of a game as it was on the DS and PSP — an impressive technical feat, considering the wide variety of its featured content. Could Chinatown Wars soon find itself among the App Store’s top sellers?
