Arctic Sound E351-WM – Review

Arctic Sound E351-WM – Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Arctic Sound E351-WMEvery so often, we do a few hardware reviews.  This is one of a series of reviews for the Arctic Cooling brand of products.  For more information about the company or its products, go to Arctic-Cooling.com.

The Arctic Sound E351-WM series of earbuds gives you a lot of bang for the buck.  Priced at $42.20, these headphones deliver great sound and are marvellous at blocking out background noises and delivering music or audio that is clear and crisp.

The headphones come in black or white trim, which is differentiated by simply the "WM" or "BM" after the E351.  The "M" at the end means that the headphones also come with a microphone built-in.  Accessories include 3 sets of silicon caps to fit in ears of different sizes (one of which is already on the headphones), an adapter to use the headphones with a computer and a carrying case.

Arctic Sound E351-WMStarting with the headphones themselves:  as mentioned, the sound is fantastic. The bass is deep and provides a nice clean tone.  The mids and highs are both clean and pronounced and sound like what you might expect from an in ear headset like these at a much higher price point.

Unlike the Apple-branded headphones that come with the iPod touch, these in-ear phones fit snugly in the ear without falling out.  I had to use the largest size of caps for my huge ears.

This model comes with a microphone that worked very well when I tested it using Skype on my device.  It picked up my voice clearly and allowed me to hear the other party without any real background noises.  I also tested using the computer adapter that comes with the earbuds and the results worked similarly well.  On a side note, the same dongle containing the microphone also has a button on the other side to pause and resume any audio that might be playing.

The attractive carrying case that comes with the headphones is compact and well-designed (the same case comes with all of the high-end Arctic Cooling headphones).  You simply place the buds in the center and wrap the cord around the circumference.  It makes it easy to carry the headphones around without getting the cord tangled or stuck somewhere.Arctic Sound E351-WM
I suppose if I had any minor complaints about the set, it would be the lack of volume controls on the dongle.  The Apple earphones do come with such a volume control and it is convenient to have particularly if the iPod touch or iPhone is in a pocket.  However, there are still volume controls on the side of the device and the capability is more of a nice-to-have than a need-to-have.

At approximately half the price of comparable Apple earbuds, the high-quality sound of the Arctic Sound E351-WM headphones makes it an absolute bargain.

The Glide ~ Combines your Wallet and iPhone Case

The Glide ~ Combines your Wallet and iPhone Case is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

large-black-5I know you’re going to think I’m crazy but I think man’s greatest invention is denim. Seriously, think about it, denim has worked it’s way into every modern society around the world. It’s durable, comfortable, and stylish at the same time. It can be business casual but add some paint spots and then it’s trendy. Heck, it can even pose as formal wear in the right circles, who doesn’t love a Canadian tuxedo? There’s not a doubt in my mind that everyone reading this has a favorite pair of jeans in their closet as we speak, unless of course you’re like me and already wearing them. The only problem I ever face with my jeans is that they wear out, not in the knees or the heels, I can deal with that, but in the back pockets. I used to blame it on my George Castanza like wallet, but even when I went to a slimmer style and purged all of the loyalty cards I still found holes, bringing my jeans to premature deaths. SmrtCase has come to my rescue though with an amazing new case called the Glide which combines your wallet and iPhone case into one.

Actually let me rephrase that, the concept of the Glide is amazing, being able to carry up to two cards in your phone case is perfect for going out, especially for women who don’t want to carry a purse or a pocketbook with them. “Amazing” is a bit of a stretch though when referring to the physical case itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good case, but there are a few key drawbacks that keep it from reaching its full potential. Honestly I think SmrtCase put too much focus on making the case thin and lightweight that they actually took away from the overall product. The impact resistant polymer material used for the case is 100% recyclable, which is great but it’s so lightweight that it feels almost cheap or brittle. To be fair I do think it’s a misperception as I put the case through several impact tests and it withstood them all very well, but a little extra weight would oddly make me more comfortable.

Read on for the rest of our look at The Glide case

Screen shot 2010-03-16 at 1.23.59 AMSmrtCase advertises the Glide to be capable of fitting up to two thicker cards (ID & Credit Card) comfortably together in the back slot.

The cards are secured in place by the pressure created by sandwiching them between the case and your iPhone, this method creates a few caveats. First, claiming that two cards fit comfortably is an over statement, placing both in at once causes the right side of the case to pull away from the phone’s bezel giving the user unnecessary anxiety that the case may pop off at any random moment. Secondly, it’s such a tight fit that both cards actually start to bow slightly which could ultimately warp your cards. This certainly isn’t the end of the world but nonetheless it’s annoying. Thirdly, this design has the cards making direct contact with the back of the phone instead of it being its own separate compartment which overtime could cause scratching. Fortunately SmrtCase foresaw this one and provides a protective sticker with each case. However, because of the tight fit and a need to keep it thin, the protective sticker is a much lower quality then the skins I’m used to seeing on the back of phones. Aside from the air bubbles which are impossible to eliminate, the sticker doesn’t fully adhere to the phone around the curved edges. Neither of these facts matter much when the Glide is in place but it does eliminate your ability to quickly swap with other cases if desired. All of these pitfalls could be solved by giving just a little more space to the rear compartment. I realize this would add a little bulk to it but it’s a term I’m willing to concede, given the alternative.

Enough nitpicking though, everything else with the case is pure perfection. I’ve literally gone the past week without carrying or missing my wallet. I know this may not be an option for everyone but I’m sure you could find some card you’d like quick access to, perhaps a bus/train pass, business cards, or Starbuck’s rewards card, etc. This is still a pretty new design and I’m sure the 2nd generation is going to fix all of the little issues I pointed out above but in the meantime $30 seems like a fair price to save your jean’s lives.

The Sticky Strap ~ A Stand that Loves to Suck

The Sticky Strap ~ A Stand that Loves to Suck is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Sometimes the most creative and useful inventions can just be so simple, the Sticky Strap is one of them. If the late Billy Mays were here to sell it he’d probably start his pitch with something like “it wraps, it hangs, it sticks, and it sits! It’s the iPhone stand that works in almost every situation but still manages to fit in your pocket!”

Honestly the first time I saw the Sticky Strap I don’t know what the heck I was looking at. The bizarrely unique stand, designed by aprodukt, is made of 2 double sided suction cups, a nylon strap, and a red plastic hook on the end. Trying to explain how to use it would be a nightmare, it’s just easier to watch this video.

What the video doesn’t show is how durable the Sticky Strap really is. It’s 100% water proof, can be folded in half, mashed up into a ball, short of taking a hammer to the red plastic hook I can’t ever imagine breaking the thing, making it tougher than others like the iBend. Being able to fit in your pocket makes it more portable than something like the Gorillamobile while still retaining some of its versatility. The video does show some of its uses but don’t think that the Sticky Strap limited to those alone. One of the additional uses I found is its ability to hang around poles or wires the red hook couldn’t fit around by sticking one end through the other. If you’re creative with it I have no doubt you could find dozens of other uses for it also.

stickyIt’s not to say that the Sticky Strap is limitless, quite the opposite, and aprodukt’s list of “Do’s and DON’TS” is liable to scare anyone a little bit but the basic message is use common sense. If you don’t think sticking your iPhone to a cold surface over a fish tank is a good idea, then don’t do it. The biggest drawback of this design is that it can’t stick to just any surface, it has to be a very smooth and clean surface. While that sounds obvious it’s important to note that includes your iPhone or more specifically the case you may be using on your phone. I tested it with 5 different cases, all three of the hard cases worked just fine but the two silicone soft cases couldn’t be used at all. Taking the case off for use may not be the end of the world but it could certainly become annoying after a few uses. However, for less than $10 the Sticky Strap worth buying for quick on the go use. For only $3 more, aprodukt also offers a kit which includes a 3 pack of protective stickers and a polishing cloth which usually run about $15 through other competitors.

Radiation vs. Germs ~ Which Should Worry You More?

Radiation vs. Germs ~ Which Should Worry You More? is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Screen shot 2010-03-07 at 1.42.03 AM
For as long as I can remember cell phones being around I can remember people questioning whether or not they’re safe. The argument has always seemed to center around cell phone radiation, and more recently bluetooth & Wifi waves. The bluetooth and Wifi scares have pretty much dissolved by being labeled as pure conspiracy theories, but the radiation concerns continue to surface every few months. With each study that comes out though it becomes more obvious that we just don’t know the long term risks of RF radiation exposure This article gives a little more insight into the potential jeopardy we’re in while at the same time the FDA is stating that “the available scientific evidence does not demonstrate any adverse health effects associated with the use of mobile phones.” With all of these mixed signals and unknown effects I wonder if the theoretical brain tumors and Alzheimer’s we could contract 20 years down the line is really the number one thing we should be worried about?

Some would say no, common germs could have a much bigger impact on our every day lives. A recent study has shown that an average person’s cell phone can have 100x more bacteria than a toilet seat. When it comes to germs I’m more the type to say “bring it on, what doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger,” but this kind of statistic concerns even me. After all, putting our heads on a toilet seat and talking to it isn’t something most of us, beyond our 21st birthday of course, would ever even consider doing. Being an iPhone user appears to have an even greater danger than standard phones because we tend to show off and share our phones with more people on a regular basis. This leads to the greater opportunity for skin infections, flu virus, and cold viruses to spread. God, how pissed would you be if you got Swine Flu from a cell phone?!

iskin-solo-for-iphone-3gSo how do we avoid this plague? Well the two news reports below suggest using rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab to periodically clean it. Thats all well and good but, as the first report eludes to, how often do people really remember to clean their phones? At least one company has decided to step up and help protect us, even when we didn’t know we needed protecting. iSkin has come out with two lines of cases which contain Microban in them. Microban is an antibacterial protein that has been around for quite some time and can be found in many normal office products like mouse pads, keyboard covers, even paper and literally thousands of other products out there. iSkin’s two case model lines are the Revo and the Solo (which I recently mentioned in my Case Buying 101 article). Of the two I would recommend the Solo over the Revo for a decent all around case. While the Microban doesn’t automatically make either of them the best case on the market it could certainly add enough benefits to tip the scale in iSkin’s direction.

gi_joe_logoOk I admit some of this may be a little dramatic and I certainly don’t want to walk out of my house tomorrow to see everyone talking on their phones, holding it with a handkerchief, and keeping it few inches away from there ear. Well ok, I do want to see that, but only because that would mean every person in Phoenix reads my writing. Seriously though, I do think it’s important to know about these risks, and knowing is half the battle (I can’t believe I just worked a G.I. Joe quote into an article.).

iControlPad Adds Joysticks to Your iPhone…If it’s Jailborken

iControlPad Adds Joysticks to Your iPhone…If it’s Jailborken is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

new_case2A stylus? Psh, get rid of it. A physical keyboard? Nah, no need for that either. Tactile feedback is a thing of the past, all we need is a big glass touch screen…right? Well that’s what Apple would have you believe anyway, a theory that is further being cemented with their upcoming release of the iPad. On a basic level it seems to be very true, we’re able to text, surf the web, take photos, all without any physical buttons or keys. What about high level gaming though, is that a different story? If you’d asked me 3 years ago I would’ve said “there’s no way for it to be done. We’re humans, touch is one of our basic senses, we need it.” Over the past several months though with games like N.O.V.A and Need For Speed Shift, or even classic ports like Wolfenstein, I’ve become more of a believer in the future. Not everyone is so ready to give up on game controllers, one such company being iControlPad.

The iControlPad has been in beta testing and undergoing redesigns since last May but as of February 18th the company has stated mass production has begun. The iControlPad can already be used with classic game emulators and the company is seeding a SDK to anyone interested in supporting the device. Two models are to be made, one with a built-in battery pack, one without. Based on early videos and screen shots the controls appear to work flawlessly with no lag at all. Here’s the catch, and it’s a big one, the iControlPad only works on phones that are Jailbroken. I’m not sure exactly why that is since we know iPhone 3.0 does support accessory plugin’s but it’s very clear that it must be Jailbroken. There are a couple of hints on the site that indicate they may be working on standard OS supported version but there certainly aren’t any promises made. All hope is not lost though for those who wish to keep their iPhones pure and sacred, the Game Bone Pro is coming.

gamebonepro_500x281I know I’ve mentioned this device before and yes it still remains in the preproduction phase. However, the 22Moo site as recently as February 11th has stated that the most current redesign is on track and they are currently investigating iPad support. This too will be seeding a free SDK to developers but the big difference is the GBP will be carrying the “Approved by Apple” branding on its side. While the controller design itself may be a little cheesy, its features make it more than just a little appealing, including a 2000mAh iPhone charging battery, bluetooth support, building speakers, mic and 3.5 audio headphone jack. Still no official word on pricing or ETA but seeing as it’s been in design since last June I’m hoping for sooner rather than later.

Jailbroken or not it’s pretty clear that some of the iPhone world has not completely given up on buttons or D-pads yet. I’m personally still on the fence but where do you stand?

Here’s a clip of the iControlPad model with the built in battery pack:

Gorillamobile Tripod – Versatility at it’s Finest

Gorillamobile Tripod – Versatility at it’s Finest is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

**UPDATE** The one feature to make the Gorillamobie even better has been added to a new line… magnetic feat! Check it out here

gm2-stroller-new-mhTo me Joby’s Gorillamobile is the obvious love child of a tripod and a SnakeLight flashlight. For you young-ins out there who have no idea what a SnakeLight is let me tell you, it was the ultimate dad’s Christmas gift back in ‘94. Tagged as being the flashlight that could go any where and grab onto anything, the SnakeLight was an overnight success. Personally I think it was their catchy commercial campaign that did it. However, while the SnakeLight has all but vanished from mainstream society, I suspect the Joby Tripod line will retain a commanding presence for quite some time. Let me start by saying I never thought I could have as much fun with or be as excited about a tripod as I am for the Gorillamobile.

When I first saw this little beauty I thought it looked interesting, but it wasn’t until I got to play with…excuse me, I mean rigorously test it, that I fully appreciated its versatility. Each leg of the tripod is built with multiple interlocking joints which can be rotated a full 360º. This allows them to be bent at any point and any direction to wrap around or create a stable flat surface to shoot from. Each joint is encircled with a ring of high-durable, textured, rubber gripping material which keeps each joint stiff and secure under weight. The head of it is also on a ball joint which allows the phone to move from landscape to portrait and anywhere in between with ease.

470_75509

The quick switch clip at the top allows the iPhone be mounted and unmounted quickly without any fuss. The kit comes with a few other mounting brackets as well, including a standard 1/4″ tripod screw and 2 adhesive clips for mounting any other small device you might deem necessary. Just this week Joby also released an iPod Touch case for purchase. Granted the Touch’s don’t have cameras but it does speak to Gorillamobile’s other fantastic use a great stand for watching video.

Joby also released a free app, Gorillacam, to accompany the tripod. There isn’t anything revolutionary about the app which provides things like a Level, Self-timer, Time-laspe, and a 3 Shot Burst, but it’s certainly a nice addition and can even be useful if you don’t own a tripod.

I’ve been using the Gorillamobile for a few weeks now and while I could’ve written this review after just a couple of days, I really wanted to stress it and find a flaw. Amazingly enough though I simply couldn’t. The only possible flaw I could come up with is one of speculation, there is potential that over time the rubber grips could ware down and have trouble holding their position under device weight.

Screen shot 2010-02-18 at 10.44.38 AM

The only other issue would be the price at $39.95 which is easily justifiable for an iPhone user but if you’re an iPod Touch user just looking for a good stand, it may make it harder to swallow. Personally though, I would probably still buy it. This is one of the very few products that really can’t be made any better. All they’re missing is a clever stop action commercial with a catchy tune similar to the one I’ve included below as an extra treat.

Developer: Joby
Price: $39.95
Model Reviewed: Gorillamobile 3G/S

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Pros:
-Versatile, can wrap or stand on any surface
-Comes with additional brackets
-Can be used as a stand for watching videos

Cons:
-Potential to ware down over time and not hold its weight
-Expensive if only used as a stand

zoomIt SD Cards for the iPhone

zoomIt SD Cards for the iPhone is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

zoomit-cameraYears ago with the introduction of the iPod Photo (the first color screen iPod) came a great idea, the ability to add photos directly onto an iPod while on the go. Since SD cards were so expensive for a very small amount of storage space this was huge break through for casual and professional photographers alike. Apple was the first to add support with it’s own SD Card Dock Connector followed by a few 3rd party makers. Slowly the need for the adapter died off as SD Cards became drastically cheaper. zoomMediaPlus has given the concept a rebirth with the release of it’s new product zoomIt for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Paired with it’s free app, also named zoomIt, the SD reader adds new features the vintage versions never could.

The zoomIt app, essentially a file manger, allows you to copy photos and other supported file types, music, movies, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF’s, etc., both to and from an SD card. Any of these can be viewed/listened to through the zoomIt app only photos have the ability to interface with another native app (the camera roll). zoomIt also includes built in support for sharing files via e-mail, Facebook and Flickr and the newest update has added the ability to read write protected SD cards. The reader will be shipping in April for $59.95 but pre-orders are being taken now with a $10 discount.

It’s worth noting though that Apple also announced a similar dock adapter which includes usb support for the iPad at only $30. Currently there’s no telling whether this will work on an iPhone or if the zoomIt will work on the iPad so it may be worth holding out until March when more details will surface before taking the $60 plunge.

iChug – Review

iChug – Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

I don’t envy the poor sap at iTunes HQ who had to review and categorize this app upon publication. Not only did the quality test ruin his liver, his tolerance and probably his good standing at his favorite neighborhood pub, but he also had to go to work stone and runk and figure out a place to post this app on iTunes.

It’s hard to describe iChug. It’s not quite a game, not quite an entertainment app and not totally useful in terms of functionality and purpose unless your goal is to squeeze as many drinks…Read More

GPS for an iPod Touch, Coming in February

GPS for an iPod Touch, Coming in February is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

cradle_mainpageDual Electronics has updated their site promising that the XGPS300 Navigation Cradle for the iPod Touch, originally expected in November ‘09, will be shipping later this February. The cradle offers GPS support for all models of the iPod Touch and comes bundled with a Windshield Mount kit and the NavAtlas App all for the price of $179.99. While some critics have taken aim at the price point claiming it to be too steep for a consumer who might as well buy a dedicated standalone GPS unit, there are some features of this that might make the expense a little easier to swallow.

Adding significant value to the deal is the battery pack portion of the cradle which can be switched on and off as necessary. Whether it be to keep the GPS from draining all of the touch’s power or simply as a power boost to keep the it kicking, the XGPS300 is capable of doubling its battery life. Battery pack cases alone usually cost between $60-$100, not to mention that this also means you’re not tethered to your car. Unlike many other standalone GPS units, which get all of their power from the cigarette lighter, this one can be taken hiking, biking, swimming…well maybe not swimming, but you get the idea.

Having not used the NavAtlas app yet I can’t vouch for its quality but since navigation apps like TomTom can cost upwards of $60, the possible value should not be overlooked. Plus the GPS support does not stop at NavAtlas or even navigation apps in general. The XGPS300 brings full location support to an iPod Touch and adds a built in microphone as well, bringing iPods just one step closer to being an iPhone and giving full functionality back to all of the amazing apps which require them.

Granted, $179.99 is a tough sell at first glance, but if GPS/location services is something you’ve been craving on your iPod Touch then the XGPS300 has more than enough to make it a worthy purchase. I’ve listed a couple of other features below along with the current ad Dual Electronics is running.

Additional Features:
-Amplified Speaker for Navigation Voice Prompts
-WIndshield Mount is adjustable to any position
-Included 12v Charger for in car power
-LED Battery Life indicator

Best fake pictures of the new Apple Tablet so far.

Best fake pictures of the new Apple Tablet so far. is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

TechCrunch recently put up an article that showed off some pictures of a “leaked” tablet from a designer named Dustin Curtis. Dustin timed his fakes pretty well, and will probably end up getting quite a few calls for work after this. These in my opinion (and many others) are possibly the best fakes to date. I would not be surprised if this is very close to the actual device itself. With the hype generators going strong leading up to tomorrow’s announcement I’m simply amazed at how much information, speculation and intrigue are being produced around a device that technically does not even exist yet.

tablet-630x472tablet2

Some of you may be asking though, why is there so much hype around this device? For me, my interest levels went through the roof after watching some videos of what the device could be capable of. I believe quite a few of the big industry players in film, games, books, and music have all got early access to the device to create remarkable interactive experiences. Some prototypes, and design concepts have been shown.

Tomorrow we’ll know for sure though, and it’s possible that this thing could change the way we do everything.. all over again. If you have a few extra minutes, take the time and watch the videos I’ve posted below. You will not be disappointed.
