AppZapp has been around for quite a while and has brought us apps like “Do Not Press The Red Button”, and many more. They have somewhere around 20 apps in their catalog for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and they have released a new app to try and sort through it all: Discover the App Store.

AppZapp has released a new app to easily guide you through the AppStore. “Discover the App Store“ is an easy walk through all the apps has to offer, with a simple easy interface. AppZapp also has a “PriceAlarm“ function, that will always inform you of sales or promotions of certain apps you love. You just set up a free account, and select the Apps you want to monitor.

“Discover the App Store” is a great tool to help you find what your looking for in the App Store. It features the same great descriptions and details you’ve come to know from the App Store. It supports App Stores in the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Staying healthy is more than just a matter of going to the gym or running a marathon. It’s also about maintaining a positive attitude, not just about your environment but also about yourself. Mental and spiritual well-being is just as important as keeping your body in shape.

Health Yourself by Kagan Media Net is an app with that same philosophy in mind, intended to give you access to a resource of information on keeping your body, mind, and spirit in top condition.There is a great volume of information within the app itself as well as links to other resources for delving into a topic further.

When you first start the app you are presented with a daily affirmation, and the option to view an Intro or go to the Home menu. The Home menu gives you the main access to the categories of body, mind, and spirit, as well as direct access to the additional Links and an About page. Each category takes you to a page with further topics, such as “Create Health”, “Disease”, and “Purpose”. Under the Body category there is even a simple health test to rate your overall health.

Health Yourself is a good resource if you are seeking information thoughts on getting and staying healthy. Though most of the information would fall into the “alternative medicine” or “new age” category, most of it is very compelling and could even be considered common sense if you’re not into “new age” spirituality.

One note about the price: I hate that $4.99 is a high app price these days, but that’s just the reality of the app store. A price tag like that is a bit high for something that’s basically a hyperlinked document.

All in all though, if this is the kind of information you’re after, Health Yourself could be a great portable resource and daily reminder about how to stay healthy in all aspects of your life.

iStair ($0.99)

Review – “Count your steps as you work out!”

If you’ve got a regular workout routine and stairs are something that are included in it, you may want to check out iStair. iStair is an app that will count how many steps you’ve taken for you! How does it accomplish this you ask? Through the use of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer!

When you open up this app you’re taken straight to the main screen. At the top you’ll see a large number that shows how many steps you’ve taken, and just below is a “Reset” button and a “i” button. To use the app you’re supposed to just hold it in your hand as you walk up the stairs. I was kind of expecting the app to ask me to just put it in my pocket, but holding it makes more sense if you really want an accurate count!

At any time you can restart your step count by touching the “Reset” button. Touching the “i” button will bring up a screen that describes how to properly use the app. There is also a “Sensitivity’ meter here as well. By default the meter is set in the middle and is set at the ideal sensitivity, based on an average person’s step.

There’s not really much else to this app, but it does what it’s designed to do well.  If you’re workout routine regularly includes steps (whether on a machine or on real steps) you may want to check out iStair.  This app can make keeping track of your workout as easy as holding your phone as you walk! Emergency & Critical Care Pocket Guide ($9.99)

Review – “Great critical care reference for any medical professional!”

A lot of medical professionals carry pocket guides that contain various information that they might need in the field. For years Informed has been a large provider of these small pocket-sized guides, and now they are bringing these great resources directly to your mobile device!

Previously all of these medical resources were released in a simple PDF format much like a lot of digital book formats like you see today. While it was not a bad format, Informed is now releasing all of their apps in a way that allows you to interact with and search for the material that you’re looking for!

When you open up this app the first screen you’ll see is the Topics screen. This is a great way to quickly find information. Touching any available topic will bring up all of the related information. For example, touching the “Medical Emergencies” topic will bring up a list of items to choose from that include Abdominal pain, Abuse, Childbirth, Choking, and many more.

Once you find what you want and open up you’ll find that the information in this app is not just boring data, it is laid out with all kinds of caps, punctuation, bullets and even pictures in some cases. You’ll even find links to things within the app when applicable. For example, in some of the articles you’ll find links to the poison control center. Touching these links will place a phone call to their headquarters for you.

You’ll also find a variety of different calculators in this app. It includes everything from a simple conversion calculator that handles temperature, weight, volume and length, down to a variety of different Pediatric calculators. The interfaces for the calculator’s were very easy to understand and use, and they also work very quickly!

The third button in the menu at the bottom of the screen is the “Search/Bookmarks” button. Touching this brings up a list of all your current bookmarks to choose from. Touching any of them will take you directly to the page that you were on when you created them.

In the upper left corner of the “Search/Bookmarks” screen you’ll see a little magnifying glass. Touching this button will open up a search bar where you can search for anything. This is a great feature that will allow you to quickly find the exact information you are looking for. The searches work in real time as well so there is no waiting to load search results.

If you find yourself carrying a paper version of this or a similar emergency reference then you’ll definitely want to check out this app. If you’re just not that present that usually carries around a reference maybe this would be a good time to start! Liza, which is available in two versions — Pro and Lite —, is coined as a revolutionary fitness tool described as “breakthrough app measures muscle power” in its press release. The concept of Liza is this: by employing some complicated algorithms in conjunction with the accelerometer function, the device is calibrated and then picks up specific measurements of muscle strength during two different forms of weight training exercise. The app then analyzes and displays the data so that users can adjust their weight training to achieve their personal goals.

If an iPhone app can really do that, perhaps it negates the need for a personal trainer? I am not sure it’s that complicated to figure out how to develop the ideal weight training program in the first place, but if your goal is strength and endurance, then perhaps muscle strength data is important to the construction of a workout. After giving Liza Pro a once over and then trying it out with a stationary weight machine, I have my doubts about its functionality.(…)

Review – “A great guide for nurses that is truly pocket sized!”

There are good things and bad things about electronic references. The good thing about them is the fact that you can have a virtually limitless amount of information packed into a very small device. The problem with them tends to be that the more information you pack in, the more difficult they become to navigate. Informed Publishing has addressed this by integrating great information with a simple interactive interface!

When you open up the RN Pocket Guide you’ll see a small menu bar at the bottom of the screen with four buttons. The button on the left of this menu will bring up a list of all the topics that are covered within this app. There are all kinds of topics covered from Cardiac and Respiratory down to Mental Health and Gastrointestinal.

When you find the topic that you need information on, touching it will bring up a list of articles to read. What really makes this app great though is that the information itself is interactive. If the article you’re reading mentions a test that you might want to perform it will give you a link to that test within the app, or if it references a phone number it will give you a link to dial that phone number directly.

Besides the articles full of information, this app also offers a variety of different medical calculators. You can access the full list of them by touching the “Calculators” button at the bottom of the screen. Many of them are also available from within various information in the “Topics” section as well.

Another great feature of this app is the “Search/Bookmarks” feature. Anytime you find and are reading an article that you think you might need later, you can add a bookmark to it by touching the “+” button at the bottom of the screen. You can then access your list of bookmarks either from the main menu or by touching the bookmark button from within an article.

You can switch from bookmarks to the search feature by touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen. As you type information into the search bar you’ll see live updates of information below. Touching any of the articles that pop up will take you straight to them. This makes it extremely easy to quickly find information on a particular topic. No hunting through topics and subtopics, just type one good key word and head there directly!

If you’re a nurse and you have or used to carry a pocket guide of some sort, this is an app that you should definitely check out.
