A sign of a good Game App is one that prevents you from writing a review about it, as you’re too busy playing it to get around to write it up. Miriel the Magical Merchant HD is just such an App. For fans of Time Management Games (like Diner Dash or Cake Mania), this is a goldmine. While obviously people who are not a fan of this style of gameplay will automatically steer clear, finding a decent Time Management game can be difficult sometimes. Developers really need to know the balance of the game, and lucky for us, 10 Tons does a great job with Miriel.

The game starts out with a sort of Story Mode, about how Miriel’s father mysteriously left, and she’s working at the store to save up to go to Magic School (or something along those lines). The object of the game is to serve your customers in a timely manner. This begins quite simply as you only have a few items for sale that can be requested. The games difficultly level slowly increases with ‘baked items’ (where you have to combine two or more ingredients in the oven) that take 2x or even 3x the amount of time to prepare. Your goal is to serve as many customers as you can, as quickly as you can, to reach your daily (or Master) goal for money each day.

Nearly every new day offers a unique challenge or reward. Sometimes you’ll get a new item for sale, or sometimes you’ll get a new customer type. At the end of each week you move on to another town and get the chance to upgrade your equipment by playing a matching mini-game. A nice feature of this App is that you can go and play the mini-game on your own at any point if you want to from the main menu. There are fun little features like The Haste Machine (which speeds up your cooking, and movements) which you can use by collecting gold wings, by serving customers quickly.

As you progress, the items get more and more difficult, and you get more and more items. While you frantically run around stocking, baking and serving, you’ll have a blast. The only feature I would add is the ability to quit or restart mid-level (as sometimes you simply get too far behind) and the ability to re-play a level of your choice.

As addicted as I was to Cake Mania, I think that Miriel has taken the cake (no pun intended) as my new favorite game of this style. The art work is stunning, and playing on my iPad is a breeze compared to PC or DS gameplay. This game is a bargain at this price point, and I highly, highly recommend it.

There is nothing more irritating to me than losing something, my keys for instance, and having to scour my house until I find them. Why, then, do I enjoy hidden object games like Little Things so much? I’m hard-pressed to answer my own question, but there is no doubt in my mind that the appeal of Little Things lies in its devotion to a spare, meticulously-crafted presentation.

My first thought when opening the app was that its art style was either designed by or inspired by graphic artist and children’s book author J. Otto Seibold. The clean, clever drawings and color pallette certainly seem influenced by him, and the style adds a real sense of whimsy to a genre of game that has become more about inane backstory (all of those hidden object “Mystery of…” games) than about the simple joys of seeking that which is hidden.

And simplicity is what Little Things is all about. There is no story element, no code breaking quest you’ve been sent on by some secret society. The game presents you with an object, say a wheelbarrow, then recreates the object with a collage of common, everyday items. Then, you are given your task: locate six pairs of high heels, for example, or ten telephones, among the cacophony of stuff. Solve the puzzle, and you may be rewarded with an achievement or a piece of a jigsaw puzzle that you assemble after several rounds. The goals are small, and the rewards are minor, but the whole is somehow greater than the sum of the parts.

Little Things is a game where atmosphere is everything and everything contributes to that atmosphere. Minimal keyboards serve as music, and there are only the slightest hints of sound effects, but both of these pair with the graphical style to enhance the total impact of the game.

It won’t change your life, but you may find yourself having a quiet zen moment staring at and searching through the screens of Little Things. Sometimes, that’s just what we all need.

Unleash the Kingdom with Animals’ World

Unleash the Kingdom with Animals’ World is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $1.99     Score: 7/10     By A. PapachristosAnimals’

The world is always in a crazy state of flux.  But, no matter which countries hate each other, or who is at war with whom, the animal world is one constant that links every continent of the world.  Everyone, in some capacity or another, has interacted with animals, perhaps by visiting a zoo, caring for pets or working on a farm.  The animal kingdom is simply one of those topics that we all come to know about, whether through books or real-life experiences.

With Animals’ World by vivica, users of all ages can enjoy this interactive, digital picture book that provides high definition quality images and sounds of dozens of animal species right in the palm of your hand.

Like an exceptionally expansive zoo right within your portable device, Animals’ World allows users to swipe through a wide selection of the world’s most well-known, popular animal species.  From the domesticated (Cats, Dogs, Rabbits), to the exotic (Macaws, Koalas, Flamingos), to the downright wild (Lions, Tigers, Brown Bears), users will find nearly every type of animal they could possibly name off the top of their heads.

Upon startup, Animals’ World will take a moment to load all the animal graphics the appear within the swipe through menu that represents the main portion of the application.  As you swipe, you will see the beautifully vivid HD photographs of each animal featured.  To focus on an individual animal, simply tap its photo in the line up to view the photo closer up.  Use the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner of the landscape-aligned screen and the photo will automatically zoom, allowing you to see the animal in great detail.  Tap the animal to hear the sounds they make in HD.

In the bottom left corner of the screen, users will find the measurement icon, which looks like a ruler.  By tapping this, users can see how big the animal is as compared to the average-sized man of 175cm.  For children or anyone unfamiliar with the given animal, this provides a wonderful indication of just how large or small the given species is in real-life.  The globe icon in the bottom right corner provides users with a 3D map that helps them locate where the animals live.

While both easy-to-use for adults and children and visually wonderful, Animals’ World lacks a certain educational quality because it solely plays off its visual splendor.  Such simplicity is great for young children, but as the demographic gets increasingly older, Animals’ World begins to use its usefulness as a learning tool and simply becomes something fun to look at.  Perhaps if each animal’s photo was accompanied by some facts about the animal, older children (and even adults in the case of the lesser known animals) may find it to be a great learning tool beyond simply learning what the animal looks and sounds like, its size and where it lives.

For a YouTube video demonstration of how Animals’ World works, click here.

Animals’ World requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
