Version 2
Review – “Multi Language Translator that speaks your translations, easy to use.”

App developer: Rok Media
Website: http://www.rokent.com/

ROK Media has created a simple but very useful App that translates any text into several languages and recites them aloud on your iPhone for traveling, communication, business – you name it.

ROK Translate 1 200x300 ROK Lingo Translation iPhone App ReviewThis App could not be simpler. Insert your text on top, select which language to translate it into and the text appears below, with the option to hear the App speak it to you. The languages included in version 2 are English, French, Spanish, German, Turkish and Catalan.

From what I could tell each Language had its own built-in female voice that read the translated text, however because I’m not as fluent in French or Spanish as I’d like to be, I couldn’t really tell if the pronunciations were correct or not. It’s probably safe to assume that a native speaker would be able to figure out what you are saying by you mimicking the voice – or you could always play the audio for whomever you’re trying to communicate with. Although, you could always show them the translated text as well. So there’s a multitude of uses for this program.

An addition use that I didn’t realize until much later was that English is one of the included Languages that you can Translate to. Meaning, that if you find some street sign, instructions, or information in one of the supported languages you can translate it back to English with this App too.

Also, fantastic news for speakers of the other languages, because this is the perfect App for traveling to English Speaking countries – the audio speaking voice of the English Speaker is crystal clear – as good as any Text to Audio I’ve ever heard.

Right now Rok has the Lingo Translation App on sale for 1/2 off – only $0.99 so you should pick it up while now, while it’s still cheap. You never know when you’ll need it, especially if you travel often!

REVIEW – “You Can Translate Literally Anything with iTranslate”

Whether your travel a lot or not, iTranslate is an essential iPhone installation. It’s so simple to use, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without this multilingual tool.

iTranslate is as simple as the name implies. It translates from one language to another for you. This handy app will translate 42 languages and can even translate whole sentences and can email your translation.

Let’s take it for a test drive. You can scroll through the languages before your start. If you speak English, you might start with English for the first language, but you might also choose Danish, Italian, Maltese, Polish, Tagalog or Arabic. There are, remember, 42 choices.

Type in your word or phrase on the top of your screen. Then pick a language into which you want that word or phrase translated. We started with “how are you?” and had that translated into Dutch. We were told that to say this in Dutch, we would say, “Hoe gaat het ermee”.

The possible uses for this while traveling are, of course, varied, but there are many other ways in which this app might be useful. Getting into a cab and having a hard time communicating with the driver? Ask what language he speaks and use your handy iTranslate tool to ask him to get you to the party on 10th street. Perhaps you have a hard time communicating with your Italian butcher or the maid who speaks Estonian. Maybe you just wish you knew a few more catch phrases in other languages.

For those of you who enjoy cursing in foreign languages, this handy app lets you do that, too. Be careful how you use this newfound language help, though. We don’t want you to get in trouble, but it’s always useful to know every inch of a foreign language.

iPhone App Review – Free Translator

 Free Translator (Free)

Version 1.0.16

REVIEW – “In Any Language, Free Translator Is Awesome”

Free Translator is an app designed to help you translate anything from one language to another. Supported languages include English, French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Portuguese and Vietnamese.

To use the app you select a host language and a target language. After that you just start typing. The design is simple enough, but selecting languages is a little “tap heavy”. Selecting languages requires movement through a few screens and if you want to change the host language you’ll have a lot of backing up to do. But in all likeness, you won’t be changing the host language – it will remain your native language.

Free Translator actually hooks up to Google Translate to do the actual translating. So you’ll need an internet connection to get your translation. If you plan on using this app while traveling, you’ll need to make sure you are able to get a connection. Hotels and major cities should be fine, but I wouldn’t count on Free Translator to help you in rural Italy.

Because this app uses Google Translate it has a fairly good translation. A lot of free online translators end up sounding strange, overly literal or just wrong. A good test is to type something, translate it, then translate it back into your native language. It’s a bit like playing the game telephone, but if you are going to be relying on this app for your job, it should work! I translated: “Where is the meeting? I think I might be late. Tell me how many copies of the report I should bring” into French and back into English. It came out exactly as I typed it. Not too bad. For a second test I ran “Who told you that? They are a liar! I’ll have their job!” into German and then when I translated it back into English I got: “Who did you know? You are a liar! I have to work!” Not quite as smooth, but I still trust Google to provide me with a fairly accurate translation.

Actually the trick of translating out and back into English is quite entertaining and makes this free app worth downloading if you have some time to kill.

Overall, Free Translator is easy enough to use, and reliable enough to make it a worthwhile app to add to your collection.
