Review – “A great app for homebuyers and homeowners looking to refinance!”

Whether you’re looking to buy a new house, or you’re looking at refinancing a property, wouldn’t it be great to be able to figure out what a loan would look like anywhere on your phone? Well now you can with a $0.99 app called “Mortgage Calculator – The Amortizer” for the iOS!

The app itself is pretty simple. To calculate the costs of a loan just touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen and fill out the information that you see on the screen.  You’ll need to enter the purchase amount, down payment, interest rate, loan term, etc., and then touch the “Calculate” button in the upper right corner of the screen to figure out the costs associated with the proposed loan.

In addition to calculating the actual mortgage cost, you can also add in your escrow as well to get a more accurate number. To do that just touch the “Add Escrow Cost” button at the bottom of the loan information screen. You can then enter in each cost that is a part of your escrow individually, or you can add the total amount of your current escrow if you choose.

The loan breakdown that you get once you’ve calculated it offers a variety of interesting information. It calculates the total interest that you’ll pay on the loan, the total amount that you will pay on the loan if it goes as scheduled, and a breakdown of how much you will pay each month towards the interest and principal of the loan!

Another great feature of the app is the ability to generate PDF’s of the loan information and email them to anyone! To do this just touch the “Email PDF” button in the upper right corner of the screen. You’ll get the choice of whether or not to include the amortization schedule or not, and then you’ll be taken directly to a form email with the PDF attached to it.

My personal experience with this app is that it made it very easy to get quick figures on what a loan will cost you. Unfortunately what it does not have is a way to calculate what it will cost you to refinance a loan. With that said, the app is only $0.99, and the PDF email feature is a great way to share loan figures with people while on the go. The clue is in the name when it comes to RingToneMaker Pro, it’s an app that creates ringtones for your iPhone. Load the app, choose a song and a 10-30 second segment of it, then at the touch of one button, it’s created. Then it’s a simple matter of connecting your iPhone to iTunes and a couple of clicks of cut and paste. Voila, one new ringtone. No more suffering that damn Marimba or Piano tune.

As you can see from the screenshots, there really isn’t much to look at with RingToneMaker Pro, it’s all very functional. Its unique selling point is in its ability to adjust the pitch and playback speed. This can make for some entertaining ringtones. You can make any song you like sound like Barry White is singing it, or you can make it sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks’ are strutting their stuff. Admittedly after fiddling around with the settings, I still ended up sticking with the original version of the song. But it’s nice to have the option and I’m sure others would be keen to have a silly sounding ringtone.

It’s all quite simple but works for the most part. There’s even a link to a handy video tutorial so that it’s obvious what you need to do via iTunes. The only real irritant is that you can’t easily preview the song. You can once it’s completed and saved of course but there’s no way of doing it on the fly. It would have been very useful if you could tell where you were in the song rather than simply having to guess the correct timings.

Other than that, RingToneMaker Pro does exactly what the name suggests. Sure you could do it yourself for free via the PC/Mac but using this method is much quicker and simpler. If you’re someone who likes switching ringtones regularly and fancy hearing your songs in an entirely different light then this is well worth a look.

Review – “Take notes the easy way for free!”

I found that one of the most irritating things in college was trying to keep up with some of my professors taking notes. There’s just so much information in some classes that sometimes it’s hard to decide what you need to write down. If you have one of those classes you may want to check out Audio Class Notes Free on your iPhone or iPod Touch!

When you open up the app the first thing you’ll see is a menu with three options. You can “Record a new file,” “Play A Recorded File,” or view and edit preferences in the “Options” menu. Inside the options menu you’ll see buttons to select the recording quality, remove all data from the app, and to add/remove “Classes” which is how all of your recordings are organized!

Once you’re ready to start recording you’ll need to make sure you’ve set up the class that you’re recording notes for, and then touch the “Record a new file” button. To start recording just touch the “Record” button in the upper left corner. At any time you can pause recording, or when you’re finished just touch the stop button stop and save it. You’ll be asked for a name for the recording, and if you don’t give it one then it will be named “Recording #?”.

Once you’ve recorded your class notes to review them later just touch the “Play A Recorded File” button. You’ll be given a list of all the files that you currently have. You can remove items from the list by swiping and touching the “Delete” button that comes up, or by touching the “Delete Mode” button in the lower right corner and using the “-” buttons to the left of the recordings.

To play a recording just touch it and you’ll open the the playback screen. From here you can not only listen to your recordings, but you can also tag certain parts so that you can quickly find them later. This is extremely easy to do, my only comment would be that there really needs to be a way to delete “tags” just in case you add one in a place where you didn’t want it, or you named it wrong.

All things aside this is a very useful app, and I was very impressed with how well this app was able to pick up people’s voices, even at a distance. Best of all though it’s totally free! The only thing you’ll have to deal with are the ads that you see at the top of the screen. They are not obtrusive though, and if you choose to view them they are Apple’s new “iAds” so you don’t have to leave the app to check them out!

If you’ve been looking for a voice recording app similar to this one, there is no reason that you shouldn’t at least give this a try. While there may be apps out there with a few extra “bells and whistles,” it is very doubtful that you’ll be able to find a better, easier to use app than this one for free. AppZapp has been around for quite a while and has brought us apps like “Do Not Press The Red Button”, and many more. They have somewhere around 20 apps in their catalog for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and they have released a new app to try and sort through it all: Discover the App Store.

AppZapp has released a new app to easily guide you through the AppStore. “Discover the App Store“ is an easy walk through all the apps has to offer, with a simple easy interface. AppZapp also has a “PriceAlarm“ function, that will always inform you of sales or promotions of certain apps you love. You just set up a free account, and select the Apps you want to monitor.

“Discover the App Store” is a great tool to help you find what your looking for in the App Store. It features the same great descriptions and details you’ve come to know from the App Store. It supports App Stores in the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

There are plenty of fish in the sea, or so the popular dating metaphor proclaims.  However, that doesn’t mean you have to go wiggling fins with each one.  There’s a point in everyone’s search for “the one” when “playing the field” just becomes downright immoral (and hazardous to your health, mind you).

DateMate – The Dating and Sex Tracker by MEDL MOBILE was designed to help users reorganize and understand their love life by providing them with a platform that allows them to rank all their dates and sexual endeavors, tracking said activity and helping users to make informed decisions about their future based on past experiences.  And while the application itself features a beautiful, sleek design that would make organizing any other information a breeze, using DateMate simply implies that you’re a total sleaze.

When you begin, you will initially have to create an account.  Enter a username, password and email address.  (This will inevitably help keep all those juicy details you’ve been spilling a secret from whichever significant other may stumble upon it first.)  From there, you can then access the Calendar, which lets you view past and future “events” in List form or Calendar form, as well as add new “events” to the list with a simple tap of the ‘+’ icon.  Once you have completed an “event,” you may then return to its entry so you can rate your date on a five-star scale, one ranking based on overall fun and another on how good they were in bed.

At the bottom you will find a Menu bar.  Tap that to reveal all the other features DateMate offers.  Moving to the right, users will find the People icon, which is where they will enter the personal information of the various contacts they intend to date and rate.  Just enter the person’s name, number, email, and birthday to begin.  Such information will also allow you to call, text or email said contact within the app itself.  You can even add an accompanying picture and jot down any necessary notes that may help you discern this person from the rest of your flock later on.

Further to the right, you will find the Charts button, which truly captures DateMate’s analytical nature.  Simply select the mates you want to compare, the time frame (anywhere from one month, to two years, to all), and the chart type (date, sex or all), then flip your device horizontally.  Date statistics will be marked in blue, while Sex statistics will be marked in red, making it quite easy to decipher who’s the most fun compared to who’s the most fun in bed.  Then, when you’re ready to share all the details with your friends, tap the envelope icon in the top right corner to send your chart in an email so you can compare notes.

DateMate also offers a Search option, which allows you to look for something specific within your entire list of events and people.  The About button will also prove extremely helpful for users who don’t want their slew of mates to get nosy.  I’ll be kind and not give away the true secret to this supposedly “fail-safe” login feature, but let’s be realistic – anyone, male or female, can quell their suspicion by looking up DateMate’s specifics, getting angry at the prospect of what information it may hold.  You may succeed at hiding the sordid details of your dating and sexual endeavors, but you shall certainly fail to develop or maintain any sort of relationship.

Unfortunately, DateMate fails to deliver on the one feature that would have truly made it all-inclusive application for the sexually overactive: the STD Tracker.  (For those who don’t understand the acronym, I suggest you look it up and then change your lifestyle immediately.)  I cannot seem to track my contacts’ disease history and, after having slept with all those potential mates, there just isn’t a tab where I can list all the STDs I may or may have not acquired during my conquest to find someone special!

With an application so completely devoted to analyzing one’s promiscuity, you’d think the developers would have at least accounted for the potential risks, but I guess mates with disease potential would simply get a low rating?  Oh well, at least they made sure there was a simple way for me to pass along all this intimate information to people who have no bearing on my love life whatsoever.

ToucHotel (Free)

Review – “Find and book hotel rooms from your phone!”

Do you travel a lot? If so you’d probably be happy to have an easy way to book hotel rooms without talking to a hotel representative! ToucHotel uses an extremely basic search feature to quickly connect you with hotels in the area that you’ll be staying in!

When you open up ToucHotel you’ll see a search bar at the top of the screen. Below that search bar is a list of all of your recent searches if you have any yet. To find a hotel in your area all you have to do is type the name of the city in the search bar at the top of the screen. Once you do a list of matching results will show up below, and all you have to do is touch one of them to view all of the hotels in that city!

When you touch a city to search inside you’ll be taken to a screen with two scroll-wheels. You can use these to select what day you’ll be arriving and how many days you plan on staying. Once you have it all set up just touch the “Search Hotels” button at the bottom of the screen.

One thing that I noticed pretty quickly with this app is that there is no way to specify what state you are searching for a city in. For example; there are 39 “Springfield”’s in the United States, but if you search for Springfield you’ll only be shown results for one of them.

With that said, if you do find a hotel that you’re interested in the city you’re aiming for all you have to do is touch it to bring up a screen full of information on it. At the top of this screen is a picture (which you can click on to see more), the name of the hotel, the Hotel’s rating, and four buttons to access info about the hotel, a map of where it is, photos and to share information on the hotel with someone!

At the bottom of every hotel screen you’ll see a list of room types that are available with their current price. Touching any of them will bring up a confirmation screen that will tell you everything about the room and offer a link to a page where you can actually book the room! All you’ll have to do is enter a name and a credit/debit card to reserve the room, so do that and then touch the “Book now” button at the bottom of the screen.

My overall impressions of this app were that it is very easy to pick up and use quickly. However, if you have difficulty locating the right hotel(s) in the right cities there is not really any way to do an “advanced search.” You’ll just have to scroll through the results until you can find what you’re looking for!

All things said, the app is free, and does do what it claims to do! If you’ve been looking for the easiest/quickest way to book a room this may be what you’re looking for. If; however, you’re looking for an extremely powerful tool to locate and compare hotel rooms worldwide you may want to check out ToucHotel for free in the App Store today!

iStair ($0.99)

Review – “Count your steps as you work out!”

If you’ve got a regular workout routine and stairs are something that are included in it, you may want to check out iStair. iStair is an app that will count how many steps you’ve taken for you! How does it accomplish this you ask? Through the use of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer!

When you open up this app you’re taken straight to the main screen. At the top you’ll see a large number that shows how many steps you’ve taken, and just below is a “Reset” button and a “i” button. To use the app you’re supposed to just hold it in your hand as you walk up the stairs. I was kind of expecting the app to ask me to just put it in my pocket, but holding it makes more sense if you really want an accurate count!

At any time you can restart your step count by touching the “Reset” button. Touching the “i” button will bring up a screen that describes how to properly use the app. There is also a “Sensitivity’ meter here as well. By default the meter is set in the middle and is set at the ideal sensitivity, based on an average person’s step.

There’s not really much else to this app, but it does what it’s designed to do well.  If you’re workout routine regularly includes steps (whether on a machine or on real steps) you may want to check out iStair.  This app can make keeping track of your workout as easy as holding your phone as you walk!
