iPhone phenomenon Doodle Jump has surpassed five million downloads, becoming what its creators believe to be the first App Store application to reach the sales milestone.

Originally launched in March of 2009, Doodle Jump has since established itself as one of the iPhone’s defining game titles. Offering addictive tilt-controlled gameplay at a low price, Doodle Jump remains one of the App Store’s highest-grossing titles from week to week, with many developers scrambling to recreate its success with similar efforts.

Speaking to The New York Times, Lima Sky founders Igor and Marko Pusenjak reveal that they both quit their jobs to focus on creating new content for Doodle Jump. Doodle Jump has seen more than two dozen content-expanding updates over the last year, with the most recent introducing a World Cup-themed gameplay mode.

The developers also detail an upcoming iPad version of Doodle Jump, which will be more than a simple port.

“We were originally going to launch a replica version of Doodle Jump for the iPad, but we’ve decided to build an entirely new game with new features and game play,” said Igor Pusenjak. “We recognize how dedicated our fans are to the game so we want to make sure we build the right experience for them.”
