Toogo

Version 1.1

Toogo iPhone App Review 1 Toogo iPhone App Review

I have looked through many (many!) to do lists on the App Store, trying to find a one size fits all app for what I need. I don’t have a problem making my todo list .. I have a problem remembering to pull my list up when I’m near my errands!

Guess what .. there’s now an app for that! Enters Toogo. ..

Developed by Benjamin Nelson, this app is simple and straightforward, but super handy when it comes to reminding you of your daily errands. In a nutshell this app gives you the ability to create location – based to dos .. and then reminds you of your errands when you are near them. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

When you first open the application it defaults to the map screen, which looks similar to an application like Google Maps.

Toogo iPhone App Review 2 Toogo iPhone App Review

At the top you’ll see Settings, where you can change the map view and even enable the multi-tasking option for the application (when applicable on your device). At the bottom left you’ll see an icon that you will press to find your location (again on applicable devices). In the middle you can toggle between a Map View of your to dos, or a List View. At the bottom right hand side you’ll see the ‘+’ button, which is how you add a new location.

Toogo iPhone App Review 3 Toogo iPhone App Review

By default your map is empty aside from your current location marking. Pressing the ‘+’ button will take you to the screen where you can add new to do. It asks you for a Name (which will show up on either the list or the map), Location, and a location radius to which you should be notified (either 1/2, 1, 2, 5, or 10 miles).

By clicking the Location button it will default to your current location (if known), however you can either type in an address at the top or you can simply drag the little pin to the location you want it to be at.

(***NOTE .. this part appears to only work when multi-tasking is ENABLED on an iPhone that supports it***)  Now comes the fun part. After giving your to do a name, location, and notification radius it is added to your list. When you are driving along and move within your specified radius a popup will appear and remind you of your errand. How handy is that?!?!

My only concern with this app is that it may be battery draining, since it appears to leave the GPS option on your phone active the entire time, through multi-tasking. However I have not used it long enough to confirm or deny this… but I can note a swifter decrease in battery usage and my phone, when not is use, feels warmer than it did before using this app.

If you have a device that can fully support the ability of this app I’d suggest heading over to the App Store now and grabbing your copy at the bargain price of $0.99. While I am thinking it may use a little more battery than your phone sitting idle it may be a minimal tradeoff to how handy this app can be for your every day errands.

If you’re interested in checking out a demo video, made by the developer, head on over to his website.

Enjoy!

Friday Five: May 14th, 2010 is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Fridays are the perfect time for reflecting on the past week…and Fridays at 148apps are no exception. Here are five interesting apps released in the past week for your perusal!

Inkstrumental
ustwo seems to enjoy creating unique apps, such as the masterfully titled ““. Inkstrumental is their newest app, and it’s a funky one. The point is to create your own weird music videos and strange soundtracks, using the 31 creatures included. See, each character will emit a musical sound when you tap it. A “VIP character” allows you to record your own sounds, too. By mixing them together against different backdrops you create a unique mash-up of noise and your very own music video. It might not be as complex as other sound-mixing apps, but Inkstrumental is intuitive and packs a ton of character. Who couldn’t love these fuzzy creatures? As an added bonus, you can share your masterpieces by in-app uploading to YouTube.

Nirvana Revenge
By now it’s an established fact that the Tap Tap Revenge series reigns supreme when it comes to iPhone rhythm games, at least in terms of popularity. Nirvana Revenge is the latest spin-off, featuring—you guessed it—hits from Nirvana. Fourteen songs are bundled with the app, including songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, Breed, Heart Shaped Box, and Lithium. (Note that the fourteen includes three live versions.) The songs give you a good sampling of the band’s work, and you get to tap along to the fourteen tracks for far less than they would cost on iTunes. This being a Tap Tap game, you also have a few neat features like four difficulty levels and four boss tracks thrown in. If you’re a Nirvana Fan looking for a gaming fix, you’d better check out Nirvana Revenge.

Komenten
To quote Komenten’s description: “A comet has been born, please take good care of it!” Komenten is a colorful space exploration game in which you zip around the galaxy like an intergalactic tourist. There’s no real objective, but the vivid watercolor graphics coupled with the soundtrack make a relaxing, beautiful ride. Even if you don’t usually enjoy non-traditional games, I’m willing to wager that anyone in touch with their inner child could easily get lost in Komenten’s vibrant, bizarre world. The universe is such an exciting place—why not explore it?

Zombie Infection
Gameloft just keeps rolling out games. Zombie Infection is one of their latest titles, and if it looks familiar, well, chances are that’s because it’s highly similar to Resident Evil. That doesn’t stop Zombie Infection from being a technically stunning title, however, and Gameloft’s new zombie game is sure to devour both your brains and your free time. Zombie Infection comes with a 12-level campaign mode in which you switch between ex-soldier Damien Sharpe and journalist Alex Rayne, as well as a Survivor Mode. There are tons of enemies, including mutated and infected animals, plenty of weapons, a sinister zombie-filled storyline, and top-notch 3D graphics. In short? Gameloft does it again…this time, with zombies!

StreetSpark
StreetSpark is one of those apps that needs a large user base to function, which is probably why it’s free! StreetSpark is a location-based dating app that takes your location and searches for nearby users who match your profile (they call this a “Spark”). With an eye towards safety, StreetSpark doesn’t reveal your location or personal contact info. Instead, you can chat in-app or meet up in one of StreetSpark’s HotSpots, which give StreetSpark users discounts and offer users a place to congregate. Think FourSquare, but for dating. It’s a really interesting use of the location feature, and thankfully it looks like the app’s developers are aware of privacy concerns. Sadly, it’s currently limited to the UK, but the developers plan to expand to other countries (and, for that matter, handsets) in the future.

Organize Your Life With ListMonger

Organize Your Life With ListMonger is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $2.99   Score:  10/10   By Lara VukelichList Monger - Lists on Steroids

When the developers of ListMonger say that it’s an app offering list making on steroids, they’re not kidding. The app by Inspiretis will allow you to make lists that are extremely organized and prioritized.

After you have named a list, you can add items to it and include details like quantity, cost and personal notes through pre-set fields. You can also add a sub-list from any item. The app allows you to set a priority level for each task or item on the list, and the priority level is represented by a color and number.

There is a column to to the right of the items in your list, the contents of which can be changed depending on what information you need to see at any given time. For example, if you select “quantity” from the list of available column headers, the quantity you’ve set for each item will appear. This allows you to easily change the information that shows up on the list page, saving you the time of having to click on each item to get specific info.

One of my favorite features of ListMonger is the ability to check off items from the list with the simple tap of your finger. You can also flag items on your list, and then either view all items or only flagged items or checked off items. Lists can also be sorted in ascending or descending order by any field, a function that might come in especially handy when you enter a date or a price for each item.

Other features of ListMonger include:

  • Backup to a PC or Mac using Wireless Internet
  • Optional password protection
  • The ability to send lists via email
  • Auto date-stamping of checked items
  • Drag and drop manual sorting of lists

I can happily say that my days of using my iPhone’s “notes” feature for lists is over. I would definitely recommend this app for anyone who is also looking for an improved way to keep track of grocery lists or weekend tasks. If you’re not convinced, you can always give ListMonger Lite a test drive, a version of the app that has limited features but will give you a feel for how it works.

ListMonger is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. A small fee was paid by the developer to expedite the publication of this review.

What Others Are Saying About Acme Lists
———————————
The only list app I’m keeping (5 of 5)
by Cloudcastles (United States)

I love this list app so much I want to put it on my home screen. But I hate the icon, so it has to go on my second screen. Good as it already is, this app would be better if we could add a to-do list to a specific date, and also have the option of sorting lists according to the dates. A search function might be a useful addition too.

WONDERFUL! (5 of 5)
by Mac100 (United States)

This is a fantastic app! I was a little afraid to upgrade because I liked it so much before, but the upgrades age great. I love how you can ’scratch’ items off so easily and then unscratch them off so easily. I have several lists, but I have one list I use over and over each day. This program is WONDERFUL and easy to use. The new options are great and I’m anxious to send a list to another ipod owner who I will encourage to get this program. The only suggestion I have would be to add some little notation of some kind so that if your list exceeds the viewable area, you will be reminded that there is more to view. Thank you for this great app!

Very useful (5 of 5)
by Itub (Australia)

The web server is the best feature. Desktop keyboards are faster than iphone. And a list of items is just one block of text.

It’s Friday, and that means that it’s time for another Friday Five: five interesting apps released in the past week. Enjoy!

mzl.nemacwxl.320x480-75Mikado Defenders
Mikado Defenders is a tower defense game, but with a feudal-era Japan theme. Mystical guardian spirits come to your aid, demons attack, samurai commanders can be recruited, and of course you can improve upon your castle. The traditional-style artwork provides a gorgeous backdrop. You can deploy samurai foot soldiers, archers, and other units. The result is an epic war between demons and Japanese warriors…a neat change from typical tower defense.

mzl.zszltejq.320x480-75Slingshot Safari
Slingshot Safari is a cartoon-style game that tests your slingshot style against lions, tigers, cheetahs, and more. Animals react differently to your shots, but none of them will be too pleased when you try to shoot them—and you’re far from immortal! The graphics are funny, you can unlock eight levels, Plus+ is included, and the menagerie of ten different animals should keep your slingshot skills sharp.

mzl.lxwyymzu.320x480-75How to Cook Everything
This extremely useful new app is essentially an iPhone-optimized cookbook based on the real-life one from Mark Bittman. Of course, there are many perks to having a cookbook on your iPhone or iPad instead of a physical book, especially when said book normally weighs in at 1,000 pages. In addition to the 2,000 recipes and 400 illustrations, you get full search capabilities, built-in timers, and shopping lists…all in the palm of your hand, and for only $1.99. The interface is easy to use, and the sheer wealth of information is staggering. No wonder it’s become a bestseller.

media.3Field Agent
Like making money? Of course you do. Field Agent is a new app that aims to help you do just that. It lists simple, easy-to-do jobs—going to Wal-Mart and taking a picture of a product, filling out a survey, visiting a website—and then pays you for them. It’s not just pennies, either; all jobs pay at least $3, and some can dish out as much as $12. Money is transferred to you via PayPal. Who knew that your iPhone could do anything but suck your wallet dry? The only downside right now is the lack of jobs, but the app is free to use, so you might as well check what’s nearby!

media.1Fruit Ninja
Fruit Ninja is the epitome of simple, easy-to-play, and addictive. Fruit is tossed onto the screen and you have to slice it before it falls back down. The graphics are bright, the touch controls are simple, and a few neat extras like dangerous bombs and Plus+ integration are included. The premise is certainly unusual, and intentionally silly. Looks like ninjas can make a mean fruit salad.

Friday Five: April 9th is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

This week was packed with iPad releases, but the iPhone side of the store still has tons of stuff to offer! This week’s Friday Five comes with the usual variety of five interesting new releases. It’s a good thing that Apple announced folders along with iPhone OS 4.0 yesterday…at the rate of awesome new apps, I know that I at least will be exceeding the current limit.

mzl.ddlbuezg.320x480-75

Pocket Legends

With Apple’s announcement of an upcoming “Game Center” (aka, Xbox Live for the iPhone), it’s clear that they’re focused on the iPhone as a gaming device. But while we’ve got plenty of shooters, physics puzzles, racing games, and so on, there’s one genre that has yet to take off…massively multiplayer online games. Pocket Legends aims to change that with a game that could almost be dubbed “World of Warcraft for the iPhone.” Sporting dungeon crawls, oodles of enemies and loot, character customization, strategic skills, and three classes, Pocket Legends has all the trappings of a typical MMORPG. If you’re into MMO’s at all, download it. You’ve got nothing to lose, after all—this one is free!

Sketch Nation Shooter

Doodle games are all the rage thanks to Doodle Jump, but Sketch Nation Shooter takes it a step further by allowing you to use your own doodles! At its most basic level, this is a simple shooter. But what makes it great is that you can create your own levels, using either artwork from the game’s library or your own photos. You can then upload your own levels and download tons more that other users have created. You’ll need a Facebook account, but that seems like a small price to pay for a potential treasure trove of extra levels.

Sketch Nation Shooter

Price: $0.99

mzl.xruvicdw.320x480-75

Orion Racer

Orion Racer is a futuristic 3D racing game featuring hyper-paced action on 10 unique tracks in outer space. We’ve seen racing games before, but, hey, who doesn’t like outer space? Orion’s tracks come packed with loops, powerslides, and high speeds, and you can race in four different modes and with four different “futuristic” vehicles. One of those four game modes is actually a 2-Player option, allowing you to race a friend. And isn’t competition what games are for?

Orion Racer

Released: 2010-04-08
Price: $2.99

mzl.ueprgqul.320x480-75

Sonic Wire Sculptor

In an inventive twist, the Sonic Wire Sculptor turns your 3D drawing into sound. As you draw in the 3D space, the app transforms your lines into musical notes. The result encourages experimentation and, when handled correctly, can produce some truly cool stuff. Focus on the music or the visual art; either way, you’ll end up with something unique. Oh, and don’t worry about being the next Mozart or Picasso. The interface is simple, and “creativity” is easy to come by. Think of it like an audiovisual sandbox.

Sonic Wire Sculptor

Category: Music / Music
Released: 2010-04-01
Price: $3.99

mzl.tuuzjxnn.320x480-75

ABOVE

Getting tired of Doodle Jump? ABOVE is another climbing game, but with vastly different graphics and a completely different theme. A bunch of mysterious platforms have appeared, and it’s your duty to explore as high as possible without falling. The graphics are bright and gorgeous, and the game comes packed with achievements. It’s simple, sure, but ABOVE looks airy and fun. The iPhone is the platform where games must be both hardcore (aka crazily addictive) and casual (in this case, easy to learn). ABOVE is certainly hoping to nail that sweet spot.

ABOVE – Insanely Addictive!

Business Card Readers: A Comparison of Three

Business Card Readers: A Comparison of Three is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

photo36I can remember when I was handed my first business card. I always thought they were used as a means of saying: “Hey, look at me! I’m sooooo important, I have a special card to handout to people, showing how important I am!”

Yesterday As I grew up and entered the professional world, I realized that these cards were actually useful, but were a total pain in the expletive. Currently, my organizer has a section devoted to storing/displaying business cards and I’ve amassed quite a few, but I don’t know who’s where, offering what at whatever phone number/email address. I might as well just use them for kindle; at least I would know where they’re not.

Furthermore, I don’t carry my organizer with me everywhere I go:

Not Me: “Hey Jason, let’s go play a pick-up game of two-on-two!”

Me: “Okay, let me just grab my organizer in case anyone we play has a business card they want to show off/give me,”

OR

Not Me: “Hey Jason, let’s go graffiti the side of the tattoo shop!”

Me: “Okay, let me just grab my organizer, in case one of the cops wants to network with me.”

When I acquired my iPhone, however, all that changed. It replaced my organizer and is always with me. And if someone wants to give me a business card, regardless of the time, location, cell block, etc., there is now “an app for that.” Actually, there are several apps, but I’ll focus this review comparison on three:

Application Version Price
ScanBizCards [App Store] 2.60 $5.99
Business Card Reader [App Store] 1.2.1 $5.99
WorldCard Mobile [App Store] 1.2.4 $5.99

In reviewing these apps, I’m specifically looking for (in no particular order):

1. Menu interface/Aesthetics
2. Image quality
3. Scanning accuracy/data recognition technology capabilities using the app’s built-in camera features
4. Scanning accuracy/data recognition technology capabilities using a pre-selected image
5. iPhone Contacts integration
6. Storage features
7. Stand-out/Special features

1. Menu Interface/Aesthetics

All three apps have a straightforward, user-friendly interface, but Business Card Reader’s aesthetic value clearly separates itself from the other two. It has a leather aesthetic and its elegant display and options are neatly tabbed, centered and color-coded:

photo1 photo1 photo1

After a photo is taken using Business Card Reader, it scans the image using a very cool highlighted line that moves the length of the image:

photo2 photo3

Advantage: Business Card Reader

2. Image quality

Image quality is consistently good across the board. All three apps provide quality scans and use the camera’s built-in auto focus. However, Business Card Reader features image stabilization, while the other two do not.

Advantage: All

3. Scanning accuracy/data recognition technology capabilities using the app’s built-in camera features

ScanBizCards’ data recognition technology only made two errors during the scanning/analyzing process:

photo16 photo12 photo13

Subsequent scans of the same card, using the cropping tool to highlight only pertinent information, would result in similar errors:

photo21 photo25 photo26

I then scanned the same card using Business Card Reader and it’s data recognition technology impressively recognized all the data displayed on the card. Of the three, only Business Card Reader consistently scanned business cards resulting in contact fields being properly and accurately populated:

When using WorldCard Mobile, it scanned a portion of the card’s data correctly:

But trying to repeatedly get it to properly scan the field it missed (email address) proved to be an exercise in frustration and the results made no sense:

Advantage: Business Card Reader

4. Scanning accuracy/data recognition technology capabilities using a preselected image

Using the Control Image posted above, I tested each application’s scanning accuracy using their individual preselected image option. All three applications produced results consistent with scanning images taken using the built-in camera (WorldCard Mobile even duplicated its email address recognition problem):

5. iPhone Contacts Integration

All three applications consistently integrate contacts/contact information from users’ scanned cards into their current contacts.

After scanning a business card, ScanBizCards’s users can add the information, as is, into their Address Book or make corrections before doing so. Custom fields and notes can also be added to the contact. Once the contact is added into the user’s Address Book, ScanBizCards offers to send the cardholder a Quick Intro, in the form of an email, to which you can attach your own contact info. Users can also connect to LinkedIn, send the card to a friend or add a follow-up reminder:

With Business Card Reader, once your image/card is scanned, you can enter or integrate it into your contacts. Business Card Reader also features a LinledIn Lookup option, containing a built-in browser which allows users to see if that particular contact has a LinkedIn account. Users can view the contact’s Full Profile and save the link for future reference/purposes.

After its initial scan, WorldCard Mobile automatically populates contact fields and gives users the option to add/integrate the contact information into their existing contacts. It also allows its users to select a portion of the card, using a blue crop box, to select text for analysis. After selecting text, users are prompted to select 1 of 11 categories: Name, Company, Department, Job Title, Phone, Mobile, Work Fax, Email, URL, Address and Photo.

Advantage: All

6. Storage Features

From ScanBizCards’s main menu, users can access their library of saved/stored business cards (in the app and on the Camera Roll). Accessing stored cards from the main menu provides users with the options of calling the contact, sending an SMS, emailing the card holder or visiting a/any URL listed on the card (provided it’s analyzed by its data recognition technology ). Users can also rescan the card and adjust its orientation and view their stored cards in 3D (much like Apple’s Cover Flow):

Business Card Reader users can view their stored business cards via the Card Holder option on Business Card Reader’s main screen. The app displays your stored cards and selecting a card gives the user the option to save the image to their Camera Roll, view and edit contact information and delete the card:

Conversely, WorldCard Mobile offers no built-in storage options. Cards/images are stored and selected from the user’s Camera Roll or Photo Library.

Advantage: ScanBizCards and Business Card Reader

7. Stand-out/Special Features

ScanBizCards really stands out in this area. It’s feature-rich and offers several features not found in the other two apps. From the main menu, users can access My Reminders, a feature which allows them to see their reminders in their Calendar and receive alerts. My Reminders also features a built-in Help/FAQ (the main screen also provides users with an Information icon that contains links to many useful resources, as well as additional help information). Prior to taking a picture, ScanBizCards offers a help screen, providing users with tips when taking pictures. After taking a picture, ScanBizCards enables its users to adjust the cropping area by sliding a 4×4 grid of green boxes accordingly:

ScanBizCards also allows its users to crop out logos and unessential text prior to scanning. It highlights phone numbers, etc. after scanning and allows users to touch the highlighted section to dial straight from the scanned image. Users can also rescan portions of an image, allowing them to rescan sections around a logo.

As stated earlier, once a contact is added into the user’s Address Book, ScanBizCards offers to send the cardholder a Quick Intro, in the form of an email, to which users can attach their own contact info. Users can also connect to LinkedIn, send the card to a friend or add a follow-up reminder.

Users can also rescan the card and adjust its orientation. Users can also view their stored cards in 3D (much like Apple’s Cover Flow):

Stored cards can also be sorted by Name, Company and Date, in ascending or descending order. In addition, users can create new folders to further categorize their cards and also export multiple cards to Excel CSV.

When taking photos, Business Card Reader contains a built-in stabilization feature. While taking a picture, pressing anywhere on the screen turns the white, on-screen image edges red. When the camera is stabilized, the red edge indicators turn green and the picture is taken:

Business Card Reader also contains a LinledIn Lookup feature, containing a built-in browser which allows users to see if that particular contact has a LinkedIn account. Users can view the contact’s Full Profile and save the link for future reference/purposes.

Advantage: ScanBizCards

Summary

While I encountered problems with WorldCard Mobile, I really wanted it to work. In its current state and at its current price I simply can’t recommend this app. All I can say is get well soon. I’m on your side and will be here for you in the future.

Both ScanBizCards and Business Card Reader have a lot to offer, but in different areas.

Business Card Reader performed better than the other two programs and is a solid, reliable, visually aesthetic business card reader.

ScanBizCards is rich in features and, while I did experience problems with its data recognition, its impressive array of features/options offers solace to users who don’t mind encountering hiccups in what should be an autonomous process.

If you’re looking for a quality business card reader that performs as advertised with minimal effort on the user’s part, I’d recommend Business Card Reader.

If you’re looking for a feature-rich business card reader and the prospect of having to manually assist the app on occasion doesn’t bother you, ScanBizCards is probably the option for you.

Either way, you can finally toss that stack of business cards you forgot about until this review reminded you of their existence.

Look for individual reviews of these applications coming soon.

Apps To Help You Watch The Academy Awards

Apps To Help You Watch The Academy Awards is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

academy-awards
The Academy Awards are Sunday and I can just feel your excitement. Whether you are a tech geek who is praying for Avatar to be the best picture or a softie who wants to see Precious get some awards, you have to be excited about knowing what to put in your Netflix queue next, and everyone wants to see all the winning movies. To get us fully ready for the show, I’ve come up with a list of some apps that will really get you into the Oscar loving spirit.

1. The Oscars – Sure, it may seem like an obvious selection, but sometimes the obvious is necessary. The Oscars app has lists with small descriptions of all the nominations, as well as a way to lock in the movie or actor you think will win… just to show off to others. Once you’ve submitted your picks, you can go to a results page to see what the rest of America thinks will win. According to the app, 51% of people voted for Avatar to win best picuter. Interesting. Well regardless, The Oscars is an inviting, well made, free app. Get it and make some guesses, it’ll be fun.

Alternative Option – Vanity Fair Hollywood – This app has the exact same voting feature that the official app has, but it also lets you see your picks against other friends using the app. It also has a leader board included, just in case you want your friends to know how much better your have in movies.

2. IMDb – Just like IMDb.com, the app tells you everything about any particular movie or actor out there. You can also look up box office results, top all time films, new releases on video, movie showtimes, and more. If you are watching the Academy Awards and realize that you’ve never heard of a movie, this is your chance for a quick education.

Alternative Option – Rotten Tomatoes – RT doesn’t quite have the Wikipedia-like knowledge database that IMDb has, but it does compile a ton of reviewers around the country to come up with a super dependable aggregate score. It also gives you a link to every review, so you can really do some investigative reporting on those movies.

3. Six Degrees of Separation – “Oh, I know everything about every actor, I don’t need IMDb.” Everyone knows this guy. He’s really annoying. With Six Degrees of Separation, you can challenge him to the ultimate actor knowledge game, connecting actors to other actors in six or less steps. For example, Elvis worked with Edward Asner in Change of Habit, and then Edward Asner worked with Kevin Bacon in JFK. This means that Elvis can be linked to Kevin Bacon in two steps. (I got that example off Wikipedia by the way… just look up Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon). The app will give you random people to link together, or if you really want to stump someone, you can pick your own people to link together. The app is quite fun, and will definitely give you some talking points during the Oscars.

4. E! Online – I don’t find myself watching E! all that often, but missing out on Joan Rivers would just be a shame, mostly now that Paula Abdoul isn’t on American Idol. We all just need a small dose of crazy on TV. In the “Live From The Oscars” section, you can check out old videos, and once the event starts, new videos. If the red carpet is your thing, or you just want want some help critiquing all the outfits, this is your app.
