Magic EarthWand

An original is difficult to find, easy to recognize. From its fresh fairy tale foundation to inventive and intelligent new code written specifically for the iPhone platform, Magic EarthWand already stands out as a bright jewel emerging in the App Store window.

Once upon a time, in a place called Earth, there lived three gentle and handsome princes who were assigned guardianship over animals, vegetables and minerals. Charming beginnings with a twist in the center. Their gentle realm is disrupted when their love is stolen by an evil wizard named Duche Baggums. Nice subtle hint of irreverence.

The three princes are turned into Magic EarthWands, virtual toys that simulate the behavior physics of the classic Cup and Ball game. The toys themselves are 3D models which have already received such comments as, “… for some reason, I’m feeling a little uncomfortable,” to more blatant wordage in offering thoughts on the shape of the EarthWand models.

The user gets to play the game in six different environments, all beautifully crafted by SwalleyLama Vision Art Director Eric Bae. Again, a look so original, it’s easy to recognize among the best designed in the App Store. Even the illustrations of the three princes, by comic book artist Axel Ortiz, are filled with familiar expressions of humanity.

As for the algorithm, that word “original” pops up again. Not a tired app that pulls in a bunch of APIs and stock photos or worse yet… another recycled version of the same shooting, flick-off, or running over little old ladies game. This algorithm written by SwalleyLama Vision’s engineering partners, Sourcebits, is mathematically elegant. It’s like binary ballet. Plus, it was primarily written for the iPhone SDK, not converted from code formerly generated for another platform.

All this combined with a groove filled, relaxing soundtrack and well placed sound effects give it an almost cinematic feel in a little screen. And, of course, a Winnie Swalley signature happy ending. It’s good to see that there is sweet old school heart and handcraft in innovative technology. Magic EarthWand is absolutely enchanting.
