Looking for a DJ type music app? If so then you may be interested to read about Sys-Cake – Shut Da Mouth. This app comes pre loaded with some bass tracks and gives you the ability to mix in your own touches to make it your own.

This app was developed by MindPol and comes with 5 different tracks that you can build onto. There are many different modes within this app so let’s take a look ..

The first row of icons are more informational icons, giving you information and background on the developers. The second row starts getting into more of the DJ abilities. Since the app doesn’t have a help menu or tutorial associated with it I’ll have to interpret the way some of these icons act for me.

The DJ Play icon appears to be where you pick a song and then it just plays a pre-mixed song made by the developers. When you go into Game Play, you will pick a song to start with and then you will start adding in different mixes as you choose to. Ghost is where you would save a song, if during the Game Play you end up with something that you really liked.

The banner icon appears to be a flashlight type that scrolls Shut Da Mouth across it. Twitter send you to their twitter profile. Finally the Mingame icon takes you into a minigame (obviously) where the goal is to match up icons that have three of the same one on the screen.

Ok .. my favorite part of this app was the minigame although there is no way of returning to the Main Menu without closing the app and reopening it.

The only other part of this app, to me, was the Game Play icon. Without directions I had no idea what to do at first, or even how to exit out of it. Once I started it up I had no idea what half the icons along the bottom were for, so I definitely think that this app needs a nice tutorial in it for the different section. In the middle of the Game Play screen (as you can see from below) there are a bunch of buttons for different sound effects, which you can turn on and off while a song is playing. Another note if that without digging in to the app a bit I would have had no idea how to save a song to the “Ghost” section.

Anyway, the app seems interesting although I think that it needs a bit more content to warrant the current price it is asking in the app store. Right now it only includes 5 songs so you could use this to play around with but you couldn’t use it extensively. Also, once you create songs and load them into your Ghost slots you can’t really do anything with them except replay them. I would think it would be a great addition to make these songs exportable to an mp3 format (if Apple would allow such a thing) so they could be used in a real DJ setting. Right now it seems like a DJ toy that is limited and not transferable to anything someone could use in real life (unless you can DJ a party with your iPhone).

While I think it needs more content and possibly a lower price, if you are interested in this application you can head over to the App Store and pick up your copy today.

SwankoLab Review

SwankoLab Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

I was part of a school camera club when I was a kid. We took photos for an hour and then headed back to the ludicrously cool dark room to develop our snaps of fairly boring subjects like fields and trees. I always thought we could have made these aesthetically dull pictures a little more exciting if we could have at least experimented with a few new chemicals during the development process but sadly, according to Mr Slatter, that’s not the way it’s done.

Prasie be then that SwankoLab has emerged from the same snap-happy bunch that brought us the excellent Hipstamatic, allowing me to indulge my photographic alchemy right on my iPhone without a teacher to stunt my manic creativity.

A virtual darkroom filled with image-adjusting chemicals awaits when you first fire up SwankoLab. It won’t take much play with the delicious interface before you’re applying saturation and bleaching effects to your existing iPhone snaps. Pick from any of the available bottles on the shelf above your development tray, read what their effect will be and then drop them into the mix. There is a limit to how many chemicals you can use in one sitting (as should be the case with all hazardous materials you experiment with) which is a blessing given how easy it is to get carried away.

Your image is then processed in an attractive yet fairly time consuming manner before being hung out to dry while you preview it. From there you can share your image, name the formula used or trash it altogether. On more than one occasion I did find that an image didn’t develop at all, however. Rather than feel my pride swell as my original image appeared from its bath of property tweaking liquid, my heart sank as I looked at a blank print. Whether it was the photo I chose, the type chemicals I mixed, witchcraft or perhaps FBI censorship, I don’t know. I guess, as is true of any experiment, sometimes it just doesn’t work.

That slight niggle aside, SwankoLab is a fun app that allows you to achieve similar retro effects to your Hipstamatic shots but using photos you’ve already taken and even those imported from your computer which makes it endlessly reusable. Combine that with the many chemical combinations at your disposal and the option to buy more and you’ve got an immensely enjoyable and creative tool at your disposal.

With IncrediBooth and Hipstamatic already under their belts, the guys at Synthetic Corp are quickly becoming the best photography developers in the business. And now they’ve added SwankoLab to the fold, I mean “developers” in more than one sense of the word.

O-Gawa Review

O-Gawa Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: YUDO INC
Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1.0

What is O-Gawa? Well, it’s….ummm….it’s a lot of things…and nothing. Sorry to get all philosophical on you, but this is a distinctly Asian app, and in many ways it confounds traditional descriptions. It’s part art piece, part toy and part musical instrument, and more. As if you couldn’t already tell, it’s also one of the more confounding, experimental “things” I’ve seen on the iPad.

O-Gawa is inherently confusing, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. If confusion holds too many negative connotations for you, think “discovery learning.” On first starting the app, it’s absolutely unclear what to do. There’s a pattern of what looks like dots in the center of a black screen; the only other things immediately apparent are a tiny blue dot and a tiny green dot. Like Alice stepping through the looking glass, your only path forward is to step out into the unknown and randomly touch the screen.

Doing so starts an incessant beat, which can easily be tracked by watching the dots in the center of the screen light up in sequence. Touching these can reset the beat or make it skip certain sequences. Oh, and those green and blue dots? They control volume and a phase shift effect, respectively. You only learn about any of this through direct experience with the app. There is no help file or any text guiding you. See what I mean about needing to be philosophical when approaching this app?

There is more to the app than just this one basic screen, however, such as a settings/beats-per-minute menu and the ability to change drum/beat samples to one of 15 variations. There’s also an editing mode, where you can customize your chosen beat in a variety of ways, and a very difficult to see control bar on the right hand side of the main screen that allows you to hold a particular beat or reverse the sound entirely. Again, there are no instructions on how to do any of this. The only way I was able to get anywhere was simple trial and error. If you are someone who frustrates easily, this might not be the app for you. I’m honestly still not sure what some of the virtual buttons do, but that hasn’t kept me from playing around with them.

I suppose O-Gawa could be used by someone who wanted a visually interesting way to manipulate beats in a club setting, but even though it has already seen several improvements and design iterations, it still seems more like a plaything than a serious tool. That doesn’t mean it isn’t fun, but even at the relatively slight price of $4.99, the fun/frustration (take your pick) just isn’t worth it at this point.
