In addition to detailing its upcoming iPhone and iPad port of Chu Chu Rocket yesterday, Sega also revealed its upcoming iOS-exclusive MMORPG Kingdom Conquest, along with emulated versions of the Sega Genesis classics Altered Beast and Gunstar Heroes.

Kingdom Conquest is an ambitious title that aims to combine elements from the real-time strategy and role-playing genres, with gameplay that features a mix of brawling, dungeon exploration, and card battling.

Players can cooperatively explore dungeons and share loot with up to four friends over a Wi-Fi, Edge, or 3G connection.

Kingdom Conquest boasts the following feature set:

  • Compete or form alliances with other players from around the world.
  • Earn new Items and powerful weapons by defeating beasts in the dungeon-crawling Action Mode, and use these spoils to defeat other players in the strategy-focused Simulation Mode.
  • Unlock more than 100 types of collectible monsters like Crimson Gargoyles, Ice Golems, and Dark Steam Knights.
  • Synthesize new monsters with skills that can turn the tide in a crucial battle.
  • Trade weapons and monsters with other players via the integrated auction house.
  • Communicate with alliance members by using the in-game forums.
  • Improve chances of success by purchasing resource stones via Apple’s micro-payment system.

Originally packaged with the Sega Genesis console upon its U.S. launch in 1989, Altered Beast was an impressively faithful port of what was, at best, a serviceable arcade beat-’em-up. The App Store edition aims to bring all the beast-transforming, goat-kicking action of the original game to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad later this year.

Gunstar Heroes, on the other hand, is a genuine classic, and ranks among the best games to be released during the 16-bit era. Developed by Ikaruga and Sin & Punishment creator Treasure, Gunstar Heroes is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter featuring numerous weapon combinations and some of gaming’s most memorable boss battles.

Both Altered Beast and Gunstar Heroes will support cooperative two-player gameplay over a Bluetooth connection when they launch in the App Store this Fall.

MMO’s are a hugely successful game (and business) model with genre-defining games like World of Warcraft pulling in huge revenues each month in subscription fees from millions of players worldwide. Developed by PerBlue Inc., Parallel Kingdom: Age of Emergence is one of the first games to bring a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) to the iPhone. Even more ambitious than that, Parallel Kingdom is a geo-aware game that uses your actual physical location (via GPS or WiFi) as your starting point in the game.

When you first open up Parallel Kingdom you’re prompted to make a new account – you simply have to enter your email address, password, character name, age and gender. You can also toggle whether you would like to receive a text message when you’re being attacked or receive an in-game message.

Once your account is set-up, you’ll be able to jump straight in. One of the first things you’ll probably notice is that, graphically speaking, Parallel Kingdom isn’t the most impressive of games. A Google-maps background is overlaid with basic little sprites that identify players, enemies and resources and other items. What is cool though, is that the streets around your home or office have suddenly become a real-time game environment and there are trolls, stags, dire wolves and other creatures all around you.

To move around the map you just double tap where you would like to go. The player is surrounded by a “radius of mobility” which is represented on-screen as a dashed line. This line represents the limits of your territory and and to begin with, you’re unable to move outside of this area. You can however, expand your territory by building houses and flags – or by physically moving your location.

As you progress through the world in Parallel Kingdom, you’ll accumulates journal “pages” which are basically equivalent to experience points “XP”. Get enough pages and you’ll be able to level up. When you level up you receive a skill point, which can then be spent to learn a range of skills and unique abilities like Leatherworking, Weapon Smithing and Alchemy. You can also mine resources such as iron ore and sulfur and trade these items with other players.

A big part of any MMORPG is the social element, and Parallel Kingdom has a number of different ways that you can interact with other players in the game. There are several of chat rooms, in-game messaging as well as “group hunting” which is the closest thing to a party/raiding system that you’ll find in the game.

Parallel Kingdom isn’t quite at the stage where it will be to the iPhone MMO what WoW did for the PC, but this kind of geo-aware mobile gaming has a lot of potential. PerBlue Inc., have come up with a truly unique concept, and with over 75,000 players worldwide, Parallel Kingdom is set to continue to improve and grow.

Parallel Kingdom AOE requires the iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch.

REVIEW – “Battle with others in Kingdoms Live”

 

Kingdoms Live is one of several MMORPG’s that Storm8 LLC has released for the iPhone and iPod touch. These games are very similar in style to games such as Mob Wars on Facebook and MySpace, except that they are played exclusively on mobile devices.

 

When you open this game for the first time you will be taken through a tutorial. It is highly recommended that you complete the tutorial phase, because if you do you will receive 100 extra gold to get started with!

 

The game is pretty simple. Basically you recruit soldiers into your army, acquire weapons, and buy land to help offset your costs, and to make money. Along the way you can also battle other people playing the game, upgrade your character as you level up in battle and keep your money safe from harm in your vault.

 

 

One of the fun things about this game, and also for some one of its downfalls, is the fact that the game is always going on. You can get attacked even when you’re not online, and you also accrue money when the app is not open, as long as you have more money being brought in from property than is being spent on keeping your equipment in good shape.

 

Fortunately, this game manages to be fun, without being so addicting that it consumes your whole life like some MMORPG’s can. I would highly recommend this game, especially if you are a casual gamer that really enjoys social networking games. Also keep an eye out for free versions of Kingdoms Live that will add “Legend Points” to your account for free!
