There are a lot of voice/text plans for your iPhone out there, depending on your provider. Some companies will offer a plan that allows you to call other people on the same network, for free. This is a great feature, but how can you tell for sure that the people in your contacts list are on the same network as you, to take advantage of this service?
DoubleCheck from Double IP S.A. looks to solve this problem. With a simple interface, you can type in any mobile number and find out what carrier that number is assigned to. Works with all carriers in over 200 countries. It identifies the mobile carrier, and marks it in your address book, so you can easily tell if you’re making a free call, or using your plan’s minutes.
DoubleCheck features :
* Identify the mobile operator of a contact in your address book
* Identify invalid numbers in your address book
* Mark the retrieved information in your address book with just a touch
* Retrieved information is always available when you make a call or text your contacts
* Identify the mobile operator of a mobile number not in your address book
* Add the unknown number and the retrieved information to an existing contact or create a new one contact in your address book
* All operators in 202 countries are supported
When you open the app, you are brought to the “Checks” tab. This is where all the numbers you have checked will show up. The app comes with 10 free checks. After that you can add more, via in-app purchasing, in the “Store” tab.
The “Share” tab allows you to tell everyone about this great service. There is a pre-composed message, or you can edit it and add your own. It can be sent via email of SMS. Just select your method of choice and hit the Share button, and the message will open up in a new email or SMS message, right within the app.
The “About” tab gives you quick access to DoubleIP’s website, for more information on DoubleChecker, and other apps they may have available.
To check a new number, simply tap the “New” button in the upper right of the Checks screen. Tap the entry field and type in the number, using the dialer keyboard. Then tap “Check”. The process is pretty quick, and pretty accurate. The new number shows up on your “Checks” list right away, and once DoubleChecker discovers the carrier, it is automatically added. You can then tap the contact, and assign the carrier to the contact in your address book. This way, when you go to call some one, you know right away, whether they are on the same carrier as you, or not.
Over all, this is a great utility to help save you money on your monthly cell phone bill. It is available in the App Store now, for $.99.

Following our report on the launch of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s Square app and payment service for iPhone, Visa and DeviceFidelity have joined the iPhone payment market with a solution named In2Pay. This time, enabling iPhone uses to make contactless payments with their device rather than receive them.
Announced today, the In2Pay solution allows iPhone users to make “contactless transactions” by positioning their iPhone in front of a contactless payment terminal. In order to use the service, the iPhone must be housed within DeviceFidelity’s protective case, which uses microSD technology. The case is said to allow “mobile contactless capability” to the iPhone and is compatible with the 3G and 3GS models.
In a press release, Visa says: “By placing a removable In2Pay microSD into the protective case, iPhone users can take advantage of In2Pay’s secure contactless capabilities where contactless transactions are offered. They range from buying goods in retail stores and at unattended kiosks, to transit ticketing, and even securely accessing buildings and computers networks.”
Trials of the service are scheduled to start during the second quarter of this year.
The service builds on Visa’s payWave technology for contactless transactions and uses the DeviceFidelity In2Pay technology to make use of any mobile phones with a microSD memory slot. This suggests that the iPhone may not be the only device Visa is aiming In2Pay at. The iPhone, of course, does not currently support microSD and therefore needs a casing to house the microSD card.
“The more than 200,000 apps on the App Store are an integral part of iPhone users’ lives.” said Amitaabh Malhotra, COO, DeviceFidelity. “With our In2Pay solution, we want to give both iPhone users and app developers the power to do even more, by putting the convenience of interactive secure mobile transactions, right at their fingertips, anywhere they are.”
The In2Pay case is apparently designed to stay attached to the iPhone and offers a micro USB slot for charging and syncing their device.
It will be interesting to see how the service will be priced by Visa when it comes to roll out the service and, whether or not the DeviceFidelity case will be free or part of a subscription package. While the additional case could be seen as a benefit to some, many iPhone users dislike the idea of any housing that adds weight or thickness to the device and others preferring specific cases.

Research firm ComScore said that the number of mobile gamers in the U.S. dropped 13 percent over the last year, but smartphone gamers — which includes iPhone users — are poised to pick up the slack.
ComScore’s research showed that there were 58.6 million mobile gamers in February 2009, and 50.9 million in February 2010. The decline was driven by a 35 percent drop in non-smartphone gamers — the number of smartphone gamers actually grew 60 percent over last year.
“Although the number of mobile gamers has declined in the past year, there is reason for significant optimism about the future of this market,” said Mark Donovan, ComScore senior analyst and SVP of mobile.
“As the market transitions from feature phones to smartphones, the dynamics of gameplay are also shifting towards a higher quality experience. As a result, we can expect to see a profound increase in adoption of this activity, both in terms of audience size and overall engagement,” he added.
Smartphone gamers are also typically more avid gamers overall. ComScore said that 47.1 percent of smartphone users play games at least once a month on their devices; only 15.7 percent of non-smartphone users play games at the same rate.
In addition, 27.3 percent of smartphone users have installed at least one game, versus just 5.6 percent of feature phone users. The top game genre for users over 13 years old was arcade puzzle games, followed by card games and then word/number games, ComScore said.
“Smartphones offer a more accessible and compelling mobile gaming experience that is enabling adoption of this behavior, even among consumers who have not traditionally been gamers,” said Donovan.
“Marketers and advertisers ought to be paying close attention to the opportunity this presents for reaching consumers in new and engaging ways in a cross-platform environment. The potential for highly creative marketing efforts is exciting,” he added.

Stock Genie 2 is an app that chooses up to ten stock picks a day, breaks down the statistics, and brings you the best pick of the day. Accompanying this is a chart that breaks down the return, volume, 52-week range, market cap, P/E ratio, and the current price. That day’s current pick and stats are the first thing you see when you open the app, so if you want to make a quick decision this is convenient.
At the bottom of the screen you can choose to read more about today’s pick, see a list of the latest picks, or get links to other stock market resources. The information on today’s pick is helpful, recommending you when the company announces earnings, predicts the future of the company’s chart, and gives you any other pertinent information that might help you make your decision, like what the short term and long term price targets are, and what amount to set as your stop loss.

The only complaint I have here is that following one of these links takes you out of the app an into Safari, so that to return to Stock Genie you have to close the website and open the app again. Not at all a huge deal, but I prefer opening links within the app to keep things simple as I browse and compare.
Over the long term, Stock Genie has been praised for its picks. In fact, the app has been tracked on Tickerspy and shown excellent results. Creator Matthew Lazar claims a good track record over the last decade, with expertise in retirement planning and money management.
Of course, taking any advice on the stock market should be done with caution and full understanding of the risks involved. But I would say that if it’s a game you’re into playing, this app is quite handy as an up-to-the-minute reference for the latest stock market news.
Stock Genie 2 requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Namco Networks has partnered with iPhone developer Firemint to bring the popular air traffic management sim Flight Control to Java, Windows Mobile, Brew, and Android platforms in July.
Flight Control has sold over two million units since its launch in March of 2009, and was the second application in Apple’s App Store to surpass the sales milestone. A Nintendo DSiWare version of Flight Control is set to debut on February 19th.
Firemint previously collaborated with Namco Networks in the development of Rolling with Katamari, a mobile-exclusive entry in Namco Bandai’s Katamari Damacy series.

iShoot, an independently developed title for the iPhone and iPod Touch that emerged as one of the iTunes App Store’s biggest indie success stories to date, is now available for mobile phones worldwide.
Developer Ethan Nicholas introduced the Scorched Earth-inspired artillery sim iShoot in October of 2008 to an initially cool reception. Following the release of the extremely popular free trial version iShoot Lite in January of 2009, however, the paid edition of iShoot quickly took off in popularity.
At its peak, iShoot generated over $21,000 in daily revenue, and earned over $800,000 in its first five months of release. Following his app’s success, Nicholas quit his day job to focus exclusively on iPhone development.
The new mobile version of iShoot is developed by Hands-On Mobile, and is available for download on all major carriers and application stores in the United States and worldwide through a distribution agreement with mobile publisher I-play.
“The success of iShoot is still amazing to me considering this was a game I developed in my free time because well, blowing up things is fun,” said Nicholas. “With Hands-On Mobile bringing iShoot to other mobile platforms and making it available to so many more people, I will be very interested to follow the game’s success. I can only hope that it follows the same path as the iTunes version.”
