It might sound corny but I had trouble putting MovieCat! down. That’s how much it hooked me. It’s a movie trivia game, so of course if you don’t like movies, you won’t like this. If you’re a huge film buff like me, though, you will absolutely adore it.

MovieCat! comes from the makers of the Invisibles quizzes, a series of puzzles that have ably tapped into the trivia market. Who wants complicated quizzes after all? You just want to feel smug about what you do know. Nothing beats the satisfaction of completing an Invisibles quiz. MovieCat! continues to tap into this by offering 14 different puzzle categories, all equally as compelling, bar possibly one.

Some focus on certain genres such as action, horror, comedy or chick flicks. Others provide lines of dialogue and require you to guess what film is being quoted. All the puzzles offer multiple choice answers which is much more convenient than having to type the answer. All the puzzles offer a nice variety of trivia so you never feel stuck with the same puzzle type.

The only one that feels a little weaker than others is the DVD Chapters game whereby you figure out what film is being discussed through the names of its DVD chapters. Maybe it was just because I was terrible at it, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as the others. It felt all too random to guess what the answer could be.

Each game is divided into five rounds of five puzzles each. Get an answer wrong and you lose one of your cat’s nine lives. On Medium or Hard, you lose more cats for each incorrect answer. At the end of the five rounds, you’re given a Cat Scene to complete. This is where the cat in the title makes the most sense. An image is displayed of a few colourful cats imitating a famous scene from a film. It’s charming and fun to be able to collect all the scenes. Some of them are harder than you’d think, too. Each game doesn’t take long to complete, which makes it ideal for a quick play during your daily commute, or simply because it’s so much fun.

I played MovieCat! for a good 5-6 hours before I noticed any repeated questions in the line up. Even then, it was only the odd question here or there, and there were still plenty of new questions to answer. When you do eventually run out of questions, there’s also an additional puzzle pack that can be purchased.

If you like movies, this really is an unmissable purchase. I haven’t had this much fun with a trivia game for a long time. The cutesy cats only help matters.

There are moments when the choices app developers make absolutely boggle my mind. Take Movies Now HD, a new universal app for both the iPhone and iPad. There’s nothing wrong with the app, per se; it does what it says it will do. It locates movie theaters near where you live, provides showtimes, plot synopses and movie trailers. If you want to buy movie tickets, you can using your movietickets.com account, provided a theater near you honors the service. The trouble is, Movies Now HD costs $1.99, and there are several other, much better, options that do the same thing and more for free.

The main screen of Movies Now HD provides four primary options: Box Office, which shows top grossing, newly released and currently playing films, Upcoming, which shows exactly what it says it shows, Theaters, which provides a Google map of nearby theaters, and Tickets, which shows any tickets you have purchased for upcoming films. You can also add films to a wish list, which seems sort of odd, as it’s only a holding area for movies you are interested in seeing. It might be interesting if you could share your wish list – like Amazon – and others could gift tickets to you through the app. Alas, Movies Now HD doesn’t do that.

It would be great if I could list all of the new and exciting features that Movies Now HD brings to movie apps, but as it stands it’s a marginally acceptable app and nothing more. I can’t *ding* it too harshly on the rating scale that we use, but the bottom line is that you should avoid this app and spend your money elsewhere. If you want easy access to movie trailers, showtimes, tickets and more I recommend the much better Flixter. Trust me on this one.

Hulu Streaming TV Finally Arrives On iOS Devices, Introduces Hulu Plus Subscription Service

Hulu Streaming TV Finally Arrives On iOS Devices, Introduces Hulu Plus Subscription Service is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

The Hulu Blog today confirmed what many have been murmuring about online for some time. Hulu is bringing its streaming TV service to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The aforementioned murmurs also questioned how this delivery of most of America’s top TV shows would be paid for, they too were given an answer with the introduction of the Hulu Plus subscription.

Formerly only available via a PC or Mac, the Hulu Plus app and subscription service will combine to deliver episodes from current and classic TV shows on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the iPad and third gen iPod touch.

At present the service is working on an invite-only basis (apply for one here) and will cost users $9.99 per month but, for this fee you do get a good deal of benefits. Full seasons of TV shows will be available including big hitters such as Family Guy, 30 Rock and The Office with up to 720p HD resolution available. Through the Hulu Plus app, users will be able to browse, search and resume playback at the same point on different devices. For iPhone and iPad users, you will even be able to stream over 3G!

While we’ve not had the chance to fully test Hulu Plus yet, this sounds like the service Apple’s portable devices have been crying out for and one that will likely bring about a few discussions inside Apple HQ. With the recent acquisition of media streaming startup Lala, it is rumored the company is gearing up to introduce a cloud-based iTunes service that could include streaming TV shows to iPhones and iPads.

The Hulu Plus app is available for free on the App Store and includes a bunch of freebies that don’t need a subscription in order to try out. The movie Super Size Me is included as well as clips and episodes from a number of TV shows as well, so it’s worth sampling the app for these bonuses alone.

Check it out on the App Store here

IMG_0012I have a confession to make.  I love Entertainment Weekly.  I know, I know…there are more intellectually stimulating mags out there, and EW can occasionally hover a bit too close to the terrifying US Weekly and/or People magazine territory, but when it comes to learning about new books, movies, TV shows and more, it’s my go-to rag.

So, when an EW-branded iPad app showed up prominently displayed in the app store, I had to download it and give it a spin.  True to my fixation with EW, I was not disappointed.

At first glance, the EW Must List app seems incredibly limited.  Basically, it takes the two page Must List spread (which catalogues the latest music, book, film and, yes, app, “must-haves” for the week) and translates it to the iPad screen.  Seems sort of ho-hum, doesn’t it?  Fortunately, the developers of the app have harnessed theIMG_0015 power of the iPad display and used it to create a compelling product.  Yes, it looks just like the print version of the Must List (and it might even look a little better.  The iPad is just screaming for high color, dynamic content like this), but clicking on any of the items not only pulls up the blurb written by EW, but also links to, say, movie trailers, song samples, an artist’s Twitter feed or Facebook page, or purchase points like Amazon or the iTunes store.  While writing this review, I even looked at some past lists and quickly pulled up the latest info on the Scott Pilgrim movie, including the hyperactive trailer.  For a pop culture junkie, this is pretty close to nirvana.

As a final treat, users are allowed to add any item to their own Must List, an action accompanied by an animated star spritely hopping into the menu.  While this is just a simple variation on the classic wish list, a la Amazon, it helps generate further enthusiasm for the content while making users come back for more each week.

There’s no doubt that this is a simple and straightforward app, yet there are features I’d like to see in the future updates to the app.  Probably the first and foremost is some sort of social aspect.  It would be great to be able to see friends’ must lists, and even purchase items for them directly from the app. And while the Must List is a weekly tradition in the Entertainment Weekly print magazine, a twice a week Must List would not be a bad thing.  A week is too long to wait for the next Must!

If you always want to know about the next big thing a little bit ahead of the curve, EW’s Must List is a must have for your iPad.

Have You Scene It on Your iPhone?

Have You Scene It on Your iPhone? is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $1.99    Score: 9/10    By Michelle SchustermanScene It? Movies

I’m not a gamer, and most of my iPhone games are more time fillers than serious addictions. And while I do enjoy a good board game, I have to say it’s been awhile.

But in all honesty, I can see myself pulling out my phone to play Scene It? Movies with a few friends. Designed by Screenlife, LLC, the game is easy to start playing and tough to stop.

My first attempt brought up the question “Name the Movie”, with a play button. I tapped play and recognized the movie in seconds – Steve Carell flying off a bike through a billboard for erotic perfume is a pretty easy one, though. You can stop the movie clip at any time to answer. Aside from naming the movie, you might also be asked questions about actors (both in and not in the scene), specific lines, and other trivia.

Sometimes a clip is an 80s arcade-style graphic reenactment of a scene, which in many ways is even more entertaining. Watching a little Lego girl hop on a Lego guy’s back to fly through the forest, then seeing him rip off his shirt to reveal giant pixel sparklies, made me almost cry laughing. (Haven’t seen the real flick, and honestly, I’d much prefer this version anyway.)

It’s not all clips – you get questions, quotes (always fun), matching villains to superheros, and naming actors based off of clues. The only question I didn’t like was finding a movie ticket for a specific movie in a sea of tickets. The words were so small I couldn’t really make anything out, and just let the time run out rather than search.

All of the questions are timed, and the faster you answer, the higher your score. But you do get to read the question and hit play before the timer starts, so there’s time to pass your iPhone to any friends who are playing too.

Scene It? doesn’t have ads, but occasionally after you watch a clip a small “Buy It” icon will appear in the corner for about three seconds before you move on to the next question. I can’t stand ads in apps, but this honestly didn’t bother me much at all.

The bottom line? This game offers more entertainment than many games out there at a great price. Movie fanatics – download it. You won’t be disappointed.

REVIEW – “For a redbox near you… please use this app.”

wordpress redbox 01 redbox iPhone App ReviewThe newly released iPhone app redbox is starting to generate some buzz. Why? you ask. It’s simple, just as convenient as the redbox in your store, the new redbox app is free, easy to use, and saves you time standing in line at a redbox near you.

Admit it, when the redbox was first introduced, you were somewhere between skeptical, curious and excited – we all were. It’s hard to replace things that we are familiar with – Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Netflix… but let’s face it, it can be done, or at least find a way to incorporate those new things into your life. No matter where you are, the redbox app can find a redbox location near you or wherever you arewordpress redbox 02 redbox iPhone App Review going. Using  the built-in GPS or by adding in your zip code, redbox will search and show. Out of town and need a movie? No problem. The redbox iPhone app provides a map and directions too.

The concept of redbox is simple and easy – that goes for the app as well as those giant, red boxes you see everywhere! It’s shocking that we didn’t see them until now but I must say, I am not surprised at all that “there is an app for that”. The redbox app makes so much sense – it’s like calling in an order and then going to pick it up. You have the menu: redbox allows you to search by new releases, a category of movies or a general search. You then have the option of reserving any available movie at a redbox of your choosing – like calling in that order. If the one on 2nd street doesn’t have want you want, try the one on 3rd, of 7th – they’re all on your way home.

wordpress redbox 03 redbox iPhone App ReviewIf you are a redbox user, chances are, you already have a login; if you don’t, it’s simple,  it’s easy, it’s free and it’s a great way to track what you have, how long you have had it and what you have reserved. The redbox app allows you to conveniently search movies, reserve at any applicable redbox location and find a redbox location no matter where you are. It keeps your credit card information on file so you don’t have to add it in every time and as always, no matter where you pick it up, drop it off wherever you would like.

redbox fans, I probably won’t have to convince you to get this app but everyone else, it’s free, so give it a try. If you were worried about standing in line at a machine or browsing through a screen with hundreds of movies, don’t worry about it. The redbox iPhone app makes easy, even easier.

photo (2)The Scene It? franchise is hardly limited to your television set. It’s had numerous incarnations with different themes on different platforms, and the original Scene It? has finally arrived on the App Store! Phew. Now we don’t have to look at sparkly vampires to get our Scene It? fix. (Yes, Scene It? Twilight, I’m looking at you—why’d you come out before this one?) In Scene It? Movies, your knowledge of contemporary movies is tested through a lengthy string of trivia questions, which come in a myriad of forms. It’s fun and the variety of question types is great, but a lack of gameplay options and a limited number of questions and movies coupled with constant advertisements means that the fun wears off quickly.

You have two options in Scene It? Movies: a regular solo game or “Movie Pass.” In solo mode, the game fires a series of trivia questions at you. Not only do you have to get them right to earn points, but you also earn bonus points based on how long it takes you. (Now if only there was an integrated high score board…oh, well.) There really is a lot of variety when it comes to question types. Some are straight-up multiple choice, while others will ask you to put movies in order of release or to match different actors and actresses up based on who they played. Mini-games are present, too. In one, you have to find the “correct ticket” out of dozens on screen. In another, you have to guess the movie based on a kid’s sketch or a pixel-art animation. My favorite part is when the app plays a video clip and quizzes you mercilessly afterward—watching clips from favorite movies like Forest Gump is great, and the quality is excellent because they’re stored within the app.

The movies are relatively recent—mostly from the past decade or two. Paramount and Universal movies seem to be the only ones included. The variety is pretty good, but unfortunately it grows stale after a while as there’s a finite amount of content. While updates might bring more movies and questions in the future, I wouldn’t count on it; I’d expect Screenlife to release another themed app (ahem, Twilight) or DLC packs instead.

Can you guess? It's the Joker from he Dark Knight!

Can you guess? It’s the Joker from the Dark Knight!

“Movie Pass” mode is a cross between solo mode and a game of hot potato. Yes, I’m serious, so you need to make sure your friends are either careful with your iDevice or that you’ve got a solid case for the thing. In this so-called multiplayer mode, players take turns holding your iPhone or iPod. When it’s your turn, you keep getting questions (similar to the ones in solo mode) until you get one right, at which point you pass it to the next player. A secret timer goes off “randomly,” and whoever’s holding the iDevice is out. Unfortunately, without anyway to see what the other person is answering, it’s not as fun in a group setting as the board game would be, and there are no options whatsoever. So, for example, if you’re playing with a huge group, the person in fourth or fifth place is likely to get knocked out just because the timer doesn’t vary that much. The game needs a better, more participatory multiplayer/party mode. Not only is the current one a bit lackluster, but some of us don’t like to risk our precious electronics in a game of hot potato!

Here’s my biggest gripe of all, however: the constant push to buy the featured movies, either through Amazon or iTunes. This wouldn’t annoy me normally (hey, advertising is everywhere, folks) but the “Buy Movie” button is exactly where you think the “go to next question” button should be. A banner ad or two would be fine, but having the constant trick there for every single question gets annoying.

Scene It? Movies is actually a decent port of the franchise. The format translates well, and many of the questions take advantage of the iPhone’s unique characteristics. But I just couldn’t get into it. Without a group of friends to enjoy the game with (and by “enjoy” I don’t mean throwing my iPod at each other), it just isn’t as fun. Besides that, having to constantly remind myself to NOT push the “Buy Movie” button was annoying, and the questions themselves get old after a few playthroughs, even if there’s a good amount of data bundled with the app. Fans of the franchise will probably have a lot of fun, but other will find that the shine quickly wears away.

USER REVIEW

Version 3.3
REVIEW – “It is my go-to application when my wife reminds me that it’s my turn to pick the Friday night date.”

Showtimes is an absolutely fun and functional application. It is my go-to application when my wife reminds me that it’s my turn to pick the Friday night date.

First of all, it is similar to any movie search website or application in that it displays a poster of available movies, a rating scale based on 5 stars and the name of the theaters you can choose from, but the application goes much farther than that, and does so with a bit more polish than other available apps.

First of all, the movie show times are listed on the very first page next to the title and poster. What this means is that you are literally one-tap away from executing your purchase. This really comes in handy if you made a spur of the moment decision to see the movie and are on your way to the theater.

Next, the app allows you to customize your search based on theater, popularity, rating, date of release, or even preview unreleased movies.
Once you have decided on a potential movie you can watch the trailer or read a synopsis on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes (without leaving the app).

The part I like the most about the app is the fact that it is able to take your exact location and route you to the movie theater with turn-by-turn directions. Really a handy feature if you travel and have time to kill in an unfamiliar city.

Overall, this app shows a lot of polish and a lot of thought. At a price tag of free you really can’t go wrong.

“Take Me for a Ride”

Movie Plot

Opening:

You’re driving in your car on Friday night with your gal. Your mind is frantically racing to surprise her by being the first to suggest what to do before you hear her say “what are we doing tonight?” Beating her to the punch, you turn to her and ask, “want to se a movie? “Not sure” she responds.

You pull out your iPhone and pull her close. “Ah,” she sighs with amazement as you do nothing more than tap once on the Showtimes icon.

A beautifully designed interface displays, showing you and your significant other a list of local theaters, show times, along with movie posters, ratings, driving directions, etc. “Oh!” She admires with a twinkle in her eye.

Plot Development:

“I wonder if this is a god one,” she points to the obvious chick flick movie poster, slightly taping it, and lets out a reserved but long “Uhh!,” as the video trailer suddenly starts to play. “Impressive,” she whispers. You know you can’t say no to her choice now and quickly respond, “Lets go see this one. It starts at 7:15,” as you tap on the show description to read more about the movie.

Feeling the need to impress her more you add, “how about dinner afterwards?” “Only if you can impress me more” she answers. You tap on the Munch application icon and say, “what do you feel like eating?” She answers, “I haven’t had Italian in a while.” Again, with a single tap of your finger, a list of the nearest Italian restaurants, and their ratings, appear before your eyes. “Yummy. I can’t wait,” she exclaims as you tap on the phone number to call for a reservation.

Epilog:

“Are we having dessert after?” She asks with a look only you know too well. Her question is not one that requires an answer, but you do so anyways. You tap on the map and the route is displayed, then you turn sharply towards her and plant a big one on her scrumptiously smooth lips. You then respond, with a deep gaze into her eyes, “only if you can impress me more.”
