Independent mobile publisher Villain LLC announced today that its online multiplayer first-person shooter Archetype sold 160,000 units in its first week of release, and is currently featured as Apple’s iPhone App of the Week.
Since Archetype’s launch on July 6th, players have engaged in over 320,000 sessions of the game’s “iPwnage” arena deathmatch mode. Villain notes that over 2 million in-game kills were logged in the game’s launch week, with an average of 20,000 additional kills arriving hourly.
Archetype is developed by the San Francisco-based MunkyFun, an independent studio staffed by a core team of LucasArts veterans.
“We are beyond thrilled to see how Archetype in the short amount of time it’s been officially released has found such an amazing and enthusiastic fan base, along with the high praise from the editorial community,” said Dane Baker, Lead Producer at Villain.
“This has been an amazing project for all involved, and speaks to our love for games, so we’re taking this warm reception to further fuel our passion to work even harder on future updates, offerings and new game features to support our community of iPwnage fanatics.”

App Store newcomer Villain LLC has launched Archetype ($2.99), a multiplayer-only first-person shooter featuring a variety of gameplay modes, including online five-on-five team deathmatches.
Promising a “high quality console-style FPS experience” for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Archetype encourages the development of a dedicated player base with an experience system that rewards users for online wins and kills.
In an interesting move, Villain LLC positions Archetype as a low-priced alternative to ngmoco’s microtransaction-based Eliminate Pro. Villain promises its players “no tricks and no gimmicks” with its game, with all featured content — including five maps and an arsenal of six weapons — available with a single purchase.
Archetype’s multiplayer modes are playable over Wi-Fi, 3G, and Edge, with all connection types supporting up to ten simultaneous players.
Crash Bandicoot Available Now On iPhone With New Features And Multiplayer
Crash Bandicoot Available Now On iPhone With New Features And Multiplayer is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
If you loved the madcap adventures of Crash and friends in Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, you’ll be excited to hear that a sequel is now available that replaces the 3D in the title with a 2. Not only that, but a new adventure awaits players as well as the introduction of some much needed multiplayer action for up to four players, likely timed to coincide with Apple’s upcoming Game Center service.
The sequel to one of the first console-to-iPhone ports asks a pretty steep $9.99 and weighs in at 71.8MB but has so far been receiving positive press. Some reviewers have mentioned a few bugs, however, but these will hopefully be ironed out in the next update.
From what we’ve seen, CBNK2’s graphics look great and all the features of the original are retained with some great new options to boot. With any luck, we’ll be seeing iPad versions of Activision games coming to the App Store soon as well.

Illusion Labs Launches Foosball HD for iPad
Illusion Labs Launches Foosball HD for iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Touchgrind and Labyrinth creator Illusion Labs has debuted its latest App Store effort — the table-top soccer sim Foosball HD ($2.99).
Foosball HD’s key gameplay component is its head-to-head multiplayer mode, which allows up to four players to compete using a single iPad. One or two players control a series of levers on each side of the table, with the object being to spin the characters on the game board so that they knock a ball into the opponent’s goal.
Illusion Labs claims that Foosball HD offers a great way to show off your iPad, as the game features realistic physics and graphics that use the OpenGL ES 2 shaders “to the max” (righteous bro, tubular). Foosball HD also includes a single-player mode that pits players against an AI opponent.

Weekend Fun: Galcon and Galcon Fusion
Weekend Fun: Galcon and Galcon Fusion is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Another weekend, another great multiplayer game. This weekend, we’re designating the great strategy game Galcon as our weekend fun. Come join us.
Galcon is a game of conquest. Your goal is to fight against the other players and capture as many of the planets as possible. You do this by directing your ships (you have a specific number at each planet you control), from your planets to other players planets or uncontrolled planets. The planets that you control also produce new ships. So the more planets you control, the more ships you produce.
Once control of all of the planets has been achieved by a single player, that player wins. You can play many different variations as a single player game to get used to how the game is played. But when you are ready, hit the multiplayer version.

Besides the great strategic gameplay, Galcon also has a killer multiplayer version. The iPhone version, known as just Galcon, offers up to 4 player multiplayer games. You can play over the internet with others, or you can play locally over Wifi and Bluetooth. The online multiplayer is where it’s at. There’s never a time you can’t find a game to join.
The iPad version is an enhanced version of the game with many added features over the iPhone version. Not only are there more single player versions of the game to play, there are also 6 different multiplayer variations you can play. In addition, the multiplayer version on the iPad supports up to 12 players. And Galcon Fusion is the same as the desktop version. This means that you’ll be playing on your iPad against Windows and Mac users as well.
What other multiplayer games would you like to see us feature on Weekend Fun? Let us know in the comments.

Blokus is a real-life, award-winning board game, but don’t feel bad if you’ve never had a chance to play before. Gameloft’s new iPhone port of the game is great, sans a few problems, and the game itself is a ton of fun to play.
If you’ve never played before, a quick introduction to the rules is in order. Blokus is a colorful affair featuring Tetris-like pieces in which your goal is to cover as much of the board as possible. Each player has the same 21 pieces at their disposal, ranging in size from a single-celled dot to full-blown pentominoes (five-celled pieces). The trick is that your pieces must touch at the corners, but never at the edges. Players take turns placing their pieces until they are gradually eliminated, either by using all their tiles or by being unable to make a move. The player with the most cells covered wins.
It’s a highly strategic game, but Gameloft gives players many ways to become acclimated. In addition to the standard “Quick Play” option, a tournament mode places you through a series of increasingly difficult challenges, introducing you to all the modes of play. In addition to the basic 4-player game, three variations from the real-life board game are included, which allow for two-player battles and a general mix-up of strategies.
The app itself is a good port of a great strategy game, but it’s not perfect. Some of its features are awesome, like the color blind mode, achievements, and online multiplayer. However, there are plenty of flaws, as well. For example, multiplayer requires a live game; you can’t have an asynchronous match, as in Scrabble, and even Pass-and-Play is absent. The controls—simply dragging and dropping the pieces onto the board—should work flawlessly, but instead I often “lost” a piece while trying to rotate it, or accidentally chose the wrong piece. Rotating is non-intuitive to begin with. And worst of all, there’s no autosave; if you close the app, your game is lost.
These flaws are a disappointing turn to such a great game. Blokus is still a lot of fun on the iPhone, which is a testament to the game’s core appeal. If you love strategy games, you’ll love it. But the drawbacks—sometimes wonky controls, thin multiplayer offerings, and no autosave—can get annoying. It’s a mixed bag. On the whole, I liked Blokus…I just think Gameloft needs to deliver some updates.
