Multi-player single device games are a dime a dozen in the app store right now. Outside your board and card games, there isn’t a very diverse offering available for purchase. As a result, Star Fighter X2 stands out as a game that fills a much needed gap in the app store.

Star Fighter X2 is an arcade style game where two ships are pitted head to head on the iPad screen, each beginning on opposite sides of the screen. While engaging in epic battle, asteroids fly through the screen, creating a need to not only watch your opponent, but watch the environment as well. The game is over when one of the two ships has no remaining health. Touching the ship initiates an attack, and a joystick of sorts is used to move the ship from place to play. Random power-ups shoot through the level to assist in the encounter as well.

Star Fighter X2 doesn’t really offer any more depth than that. It’s a solid multiplayer game that is a lot of fun, but doesn’t have the staying power to be a memorable title. Fans of intense multi-player games may find a keeper here, but for me Star Fighter X2 is a game that I’ll enjoy for a couple days and be done with it.

Depending on what you’re looking for in a game, Star Fighter X2 may fill a need you’ve been desperately waiting to fill. At $1.99, it’s extremely well priced for what it offers, and is an easy investment for those looking for just this kind of experience. With no single player mode, and no story mode of any sorts, it’s uses are very specific though.

iShoot 2 Now Available for iPhone and iPad

iShoot 2 Now Available for iPhone and iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Ethan Nicholas was one of the first independent developers to strike it rich in the App Store — his Scorched Earth-like multiplayer strategy game iShoot earned more than $800,000 in revenue in just five months. Nicholas subsequently quit his day job to focus on iPhone development, producing the follow-up Kim Rhode’s Outdoor Shooting earlier this year.

This week brings the release of iShoot 2 ($2.99), a substantially upgraded sequel available as a universal app for the iPhone and iPad.

iShoot 2 boasts larger play areas than its predecessor, and features a redesigned weapons system, upgradable tanks, and an all-new single-player campaign in addition to a head-to-head Bluetooth multiplayer mode.

To promote the launch of iShoot 2, the full version of the original iShoot is currently available as a free download.

Kometen Creator Releases Shot Shot Shoot for iPad

Kometen Creator Releases Shot Shot Shoot for iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Erik Svedäng, creator of IGF Grand Prize winner Blueberry Garden and the iPhone hit Kometen, has launched Shot Shot Shoot ($0.99), a head-to-head competitive multiplayer action title for the iPad.

Described as a “digital board game in real-time for 2 players,” Shot Shot Shoot places competing players on opposite sides of the iPad. Each player must protect a series of five squares on his or her side of the screen while launching attacks at the opponent.

Though the gameplay is simple, Shot Shot Shoot’s mechanics are deep enough to provide satisfying competitive play. Individual shots can be controlled for high-precision attacks; alternatively, players may attempt to overwhelm their opponents with scatter-shot rapid-fire attack waves.

Svedäng has released a gameplay guide at his website, complete with suggested rules for tournament etiquette. Footage from the first annual Shot Shot Shoot World Championship can be seen below.

Archetype Sells 160,000 Units in Debut Week

Archetype Sells 160,000 Units in Debut Week is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Independent mobile publisher Villain LLC announced today that its online multiplayer first-person shooter Archetype sold 160,000 units in its first week of release, and is currently featured as Apple’s iPhone App of the Week.

Since Archetype’s launch on July 6th, players have engaged in over 320,000 sessions of the game’s “iPwnage” arena deathmatch mode. Villain notes that over 2 million in-game kills were logged in the game’s launch week, with an average of 20,000 additional kills arriving hourly.

Archetype is developed by the San Francisco-based MunkyFun, an independent studio staffed by a core team of LucasArts veterans.

“We are beyond thrilled to see how Archetype in the short amount of time it’s been officially released has found such an amazing and enthusiastic fan base, along with the high praise from the editorial community,” said Dane Baker, Lead Producer at Villain.

“This has been an amazing project for all involved, and speaks to our love for games, so we’re taking this warm reception to further fuel our passion to work even harder on future updates, offerings and new game features to support our community of iPwnage fanatics.”

Multiplayer First-Person Shooter Archetype Debuts in App Store

App Store newcomer Villain LLC has launched Archetype ($2.99), a multiplayer-only first-person shooter featuring a variety of gameplay modes, including online five-on-five team deathmatches.

Promising a “high quality console-style FPS experience” for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Archetype encourages the development of a dedicated player base with an experience system that rewards users for online wins and kills.

In an interesting move, Villain LLC positions Archetype as a low-priced alternative to ngmoco’s microtransaction-based Eliminate Pro. Villain promises its players “no tricks and no gimmicks” with its game, with all featured content — including five maps and an arsenal of six weapons — available with a single purchase.

Archetype’s multiplayer modes are playable over Wi-Fi, 3G, and Edge, with all connection types supporting up to ten simultaneous players.

Crash Bandicoot Available Now On iPhone With New Features And Multiplayer

Crash Bandicoot Available Now On iPhone With New Features And Multiplayer is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

If you loved the madcap adventures of Crash and friends in Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, you’ll be excited to hear that a sequel is now available that replaces the 3D in the title with a 2. Not only that, but a new adventure awaits players as well as the introduction of some much needed multiplayer action for up to four players, likely timed to coincide with Apple’s upcoming Game Center service.

The sequel to one of the first console-to-iPhone ports asks a pretty steep $9.99 and weighs in at 71.8MB but has so far been receiving positive press. Some reviewers have mentioned a few bugs, however, but these will hopefully be ironed out in the next update.

From what we’ve seen, CBNK2’s graphics look great and all the features of the original are retained with some great new options to boot. With any luck, we’ll be seeing iPad versions of Activision games coming to the App Store soon as well.

Illusion Labs Launches Foosball HD for iPad

Illusion Labs Launches Foosball HD for iPad is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Touchgrind and Labyrinth creator Illusion Labs has debuted its latest App Store effort — the table-top soccer sim Foosball HD ($2.99).

Foosball HD’s key gameplay component is its head-to-head multiplayer mode, which allows up to four players to compete using a single iPad. One or two players control a series of levers on each side of the table, with the object being to spin the characters on the game board so that they knock a ball into the opponent’s goal.

Illusion Labs claims that Foosball HD offers a great way to show off your iPad, as the game features realistic physics and graphics that use the OpenGL ES 2 shaders “to the max” (righteous bro, tubular). Foosball HD also includes a single-player mode that pits players against an AI opponent.
