Weekend Fun: Galcon and Galcon Fusion
Weekend Fun: Galcon and Galcon Fusion is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Another weekend, another great multiplayer game. This weekend, we’re designating the great strategy game Galcon as our weekend fun. Come join us.
Galcon is a game of conquest. Your goal is to fight against the other players and capture as many of the planets as possible. You do this by directing your ships (you have a specific number at each planet you control), from your planets to other players planets or uncontrolled planets. The planets that you control also produce new ships. So the more planets you control, the more ships you produce.
Once control of all of the planets has been achieved by a single player, that player wins. You can play many different variations as a single player game to get used to how the game is played. But when you are ready, hit the multiplayer version.

Besides the great strategic gameplay, Galcon also has a killer multiplayer version. The iPhone version, known as just Galcon, offers up to 4 player multiplayer games. You can play over the internet with others, or you can play locally over Wifi and Bluetooth. The online multiplayer is where it’s at. There’s never a time you can’t find a game to join.
The iPad version is an enhanced version of the game with many added features over the iPhone version. Not only are there more single player versions of the game to play, there are also 6 different multiplayer variations you can play. In addition, the multiplayer version on the iPad supports up to 12 players. And Galcon Fusion is the same as the desktop version. This means that you’ll be playing on your iPad against Windows and Mac users as well.
What other multiplayer games would you like to see us feature on Weekend Fun? Let us know in the comments.

Blokus is a real-life, award-winning board game, but don’t feel bad if you’ve never had a chance to play before. Gameloft’s new iPhone port of the game is great, sans a few problems, and the game itself is a ton of fun to play.
If you’ve never played before, a quick introduction to the rules is in order. Blokus is a colorful affair featuring Tetris-like pieces in which your goal is to cover as much of the board as possible. Each player has the same 21 pieces at their disposal, ranging in size from a single-celled dot to full-blown pentominoes (five-celled pieces). The trick is that your pieces must touch at the corners, but never at the edges. Players take turns placing their pieces until they are gradually eliminated, either by using all their tiles or by being unable to make a move. The player with the most cells covered wins.
It’s a highly strategic game, but Gameloft gives players many ways to become acclimated. In addition to the standard “Quick Play” option, a tournament mode places you through a series of increasingly difficult challenges, introducing you to all the modes of play. In addition to the basic 4-player game, three variations from the real-life board game are included, which allow for two-player battles and a general mix-up of strategies.
The app itself is a good port of a great strategy game, but it’s not perfect. Some of its features are awesome, like the color blind mode, achievements, and online multiplayer. However, there are plenty of flaws, as well. For example, multiplayer requires a live game; you can’t have an asynchronous match, as in Scrabble, and even Pass-and-Play is absent. The controls—simply dragging and dropping the pieces onto the board—should work flawlessly, but instead I often “lost” a piece while trying to rotate it, or accidentally chose the wrong piece. Rotating is non-intuitive to begin with. And worst of all, there’s no autosave; if you close the app, your game is lost.
These flaws are a disappointing turn to such a great game. Blokus is still a lot of fun on the iPhone, which is a testament to the game’s core appeal. If you love strategy games, you’ll love it. But the drawbacks—sometimes wonky controls, thin multiplayer offerings, and no autosave—can get annoying. It’s a mixed bag. On the whole, I liked Blokus…I just think Gameloft needs to deliver some updates.

Ngmoco Launches iPad-Exclusive GodFinger
Ngmoco Launches iPad-Exclusive GodFinger is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Though an iPhone and iPod Touch version was test marketed in Canada last month, ngmoco’s free-to-play life simulation title GodFinger launched in the U.S. App Store this weekend as an iPad exclusive.
GodFinger gives players control over a planet and its primitive inhabitants, with the goal being to cultivate the planet’s surface and establish a working economy for its people. Players can choose to be either a benevolent ruler or a cruel demagogue, though the planet will thrive only through careful management of the natural elements.
As players cultivate the land and convert more followers, they will earn experience points, giving access to new powers and structures. This is where GodFinger’s micropayment system comes into play — players will be only be able to make a small amount of progress daily unless they purchase optional “Awe Points,” which work in a way similar to pet food in Touch Pets Dogs and mojo points in We Rule.
Awe Points are available in packages starting at $2.99 for 35 Points, with a 750-Point package retailing for $29.99.

First Look: Strike Knight from Backflip Studios
First Look: Strike Knight from Backflip Studios is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
At GDC this year we got a chance to take a look at a new game from Backflip Studios, Strike Knight. The game is a recreation of shuffleboard-type bowling you used to find in bars in decades past. The device in the app has a blue knight that never fails to make fun of missed shots.
The game offers both single player and multiplayer (pass and play) bowling. Take a look at the video for an idea of what the game looks like and how it plays.
Strike Knight will be submitted to the App Store next week, we should see it shortly after that. The game will be released free (ad-supported) much like Backflip Studios very popular Paper Toss.
Take a look at some screen shots after the jump.

I don’t know what cool kids do with their Fridays, but last week I spent mine at an Academic Team competition. You know—random trivia in a quiz bowl format. That sort of thing. So when I got home and saw Quizarium, it seemed like a fitting app to review!
I’ve already played (and praised) Charadium, On5’s other title, which is an online iPhone incarnation of Pictionary. Quizarium clearly borrows much from Charadium’s structure, but this time, it’s an online trivia app. With Plus+ integration, offline play, and a variety of topics to choose from, Quizarium is a fairly comprehensive app. However, the lack of time-limited games and a mediocre question pool keep it from being as phenomenal as its Pictionary-style sibling.
If you’re not familiar with Plus+, it’s ngmoco’s online networking system for the iPhone that includes achievements, leaderboards, etc. You’ll need a Plus+ username to play Quizarium. Once you’ve got that out of the way, you can jump straight into a game. The main screen allows you to set some preferences (color, theme, auto-correct) and also displays a list of available lobbies. These range from the free-for-all “Lobby” to rooms divided by topic and difficulty. The list of topics is pretty solid, ranging from Science to Sports to Music. You can also create your own game.
Gameplay is simple. The question/answer box and the chat box are combined into the main display, and the rest of the screen hosts your keyboard. The game will display a question, and from there it’s a race to see who can answer it first. Points are awarded based on speed and question difficulty. As time goes on, the game will reveal the length and initial letters of the answer as clues, but there are still plenty of cases where you’ll be stumped.
Now here come my complaints. For the most part, the game flows smoothly, but there are still a few glaring problems. First, the keyboard lags, which can easily delay your answer and cost you points. Secondly, the questions simply aren’t that good. Many have grammatical errors; others are simple confusing. Because only one answer will be accepted, you often have to guess what the game’s looking for. Case in point: at one point, I was asked, “Ants live in a what?” We tried anthill, colony, and all manner of other guesses. It took almost all of the word being revealed before someone stumbled upon “formicary.” In another case, “marsupial” was not accepted, while “marsupials” was. And what about this question: “Capital of an South American country”? First there’s the grammatical issue with “an” instead of “a”, but more important is the vagueness. Simple problems like these show the limitations of the app. The topics covered were pretty good, but the actual implementation…not so much. You can vote questions up or down, so hopefully the pool will improve with time.
My other gripe is a less important one, but it still bothers me. Currently, all of the lobbies are in an unlimited-play format. To have an actual round-limited “game” with a winner, you must create a room yourself…and even then, the game starts without waiting for others to join! And when you finish a limited game, the winner isn’t even announced…you have to check the scores yourself. It seems like an afterthought, which is a shame; isn’t direct competition half the fun? According to the developers, default lobbies with limited rounds may be coming in the future, however.
Don’t get me wrong; Quizarium isn’t a bad game. It’s free (for now, at least), and it offers a number of excellent features like offline play, graphics customization, and Plus+ integration. And for the most part, the online trivia is a lot of fun. I just wish that the questions were better and that the keyboard didn’t lag as much. As it stands, grab it while it’s free; if this jumps up to a paid app, you might want to wait a bit before buying.
Ngmoco Launches Free Cooperative FPS Eliminate: Co-Op
Ngmoco Launches Free Cooperative FPS Eliminate: Co-Op is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website
Ngmoco has released an updated version of its free-to-play online multiplayer first-person shooter Eliminate Pro. Eliminate: Co-Op allows players to team up in a new online gameplay mode for additional gear and bonus items.
The new “Co-Op Extermination” mode is a timed challenge in which player-controlled teams take on endless hordes of AI opponents. Players can earn armor, weapons, and items from destroyed drones, while any duplicate loot can be recycled for in-game credits.
Eliminate: Co-Op includes both manual and automatic global matchmaking, and features 10 playable maps.
Co-Op retains Eliminate’s free-to-play model, in which each player’s Power Cells deplete over the course of several matches. Gameplay continues once all Cells are exhausted, but players will not be able to keep earned experience and items afterward. Additional Power Cells can be purchased in downloadable packages ranging in price from $1.99 to $32.99.

Spanish Armada ($1.99)

REVIEW – “A great old classic brought to life!”
I remember when I was little playing battleship with
my brothers and sisters. The game has been a classic board game for decades. It was even more exciting when they released electronic games that had sound effects and that kept track of hits and misses! Well today I’m happy to be giving away a promo code for a battleship-like game called
Spanish Armada by Orient Maple! So stick around for the end of this review where I’ll be giving you information on how you can enter to win!
If you’ve never played a game like this before the basic concept is that each player hides 5 ships somewhere on their grid? Once both
players have hidden all their ships you then take turns selecting squares on your opponents grid to attack! This game breaks up the action with a couple of different ways to play as well.
In the options menu you’ll find the option to select “Volley Shot” or “Salvo Shot” mode. In volley shot you take turns shooting until you miss. What this means is if you strike on of your opponents ships then you get to go again until you miss! While on the other hand, salvo shot gives each player the same amount of shots that they have ships left.
There are several other options you can set which range from sound effect levels, music levels and difficulty level. Once you have it all set up like you want you can either play a game against the computer or you can play with a friend if there is a wifi connection available! I was impressed with the network connection for wifi games. I played several games with my wife between my 3GS and her 3G iPhone and I had almost no problems at all with disconnections.
Another nice aspect of the game is that it is integrated with the OpenFeint gaming network. This allows you to compare
scores with your friends, chat, and get achievements all from one simple to use interface! Overall this game is a lot of fun and is relatively cheap as well. My wife has literally played this game for hours on end!
So I’m sure you’ve probably been waiting to find out how you can win a free copy of this game. Well I won’t keep you waiting any longer! All you have to do is (1) follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/iHayward so I can send you a message if you win and (2) tweet the following message – “@iHayward win a free promo code for Spanish Armada from AppShouter! – “. That’s all you have to do! I’ll be selecting the winners next Monday the 15th so be sure to enter before then! Thank you so much for reading this review and for looking to AppShouter to find out about all the latest Apps!
