AppZapp has been around for quite a while and has brought us apps like “Do Not Press The Red Button”, and many more. They have somewhere around 20 apps in their catalog for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and they have released a new app to try and sort through it all: Discover the App Store.

AppZapp has released a new app to easily guide you through the AppStore. “Discover the App Store“ is an easy walk through all the apps has to offer, with a simple easy interface. AppZapp also has a “PriceAlarm“ function, that will always inform you of sales or promotions of certain apps you love. You just set up a free account, and select the Apps you want to monitor.

“Discover the App Store” is a great tool to help you find what your looking for in the App Store. It features the same great descriptions and details you’ve come to know from the App Store. It supports App Stores in the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Review – “Find and book hotel rooms from your phone!”

Do you travel a lot? If so you’d probably be happy to have an easy way to book hotel rooms without talking to a hotel representative! ToucHotel uses an extremely basic search feature to quickly connect you with hotels in the area that you’ll be staying in!

When you open up ToucHotel you’ll see a search bar at the top of the screen. Below that search bar is a list of all of your recent searches if you have any yet. To find a hotel in your area all you have to do is type the name of the city in the search bar at the top of the screen. Once you do a list of matching results will show up below, and all you have to do is touch one of them to view all of the hotels in that city!

When you touch a city to search inside you’ll be taken to a screen with two scroll-wheels. You can use these to select what day you’ll be arriving and how many days you plan on staying. Once you have it all set up just touch the “Search Hotels” button at the bottom of the screen.

One thing that I noticed pretty quickly with this app is that there is no way to specify what state you are searching for a city in. For example; there are 39 “Springfield”’s in the United States, but if you search for Springfield you’ll only be shown results for one of them.

With that said, if you do find a hotel that you’re interested in the city you’re aiming for all you have to do is touch it to bring up a screen full of information on it. At the top of this screen is a picture (which you can click on to see more), the name of the hotel, the Hotel’s rating, and four buttons to access info about the hotel, a map of where it is, photos and to share information on the hotel with someone!

At the bottom of every hotel screen you’ll see a list of room types that are available with their current price. Touching any of them will bring up a confirmation screen that will tell you everything about the room and offer a link to a page where you can actually book the room! All you’ll have to do is enter a name and a credit/debit card to reserve the room, so do that and then touch the “Book now” button at the bottom of the screen.

My overall impressions of this app were that it is very easy to pick up and use quickly. However, if you have difficulty locating the right hotel(s) in the right cities there is not really any way to do an “advanced search.” You’ll just have to scroll through the results until you can find what you’re looking for!

All things said, the app is free, and does do what it claims to do! If you’ve been looking for the easiest/quickest way to book a room this may be what you’re looking for. If; however, you’re looking for an extremely powerful tool to locate and compare hotel rooms worldwide you may want to check out ToucHotel for free in the App Store today!

A new tool designed especially for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S and 3G, is the iNomad which is a useful GPS application for a traveler.

It enables a user to draw a route with their fingers and then follow that route on their trip. After the trip, one would be able to view the trip on Google Earth or in an embedded player. In between the journey this software assists the traveler with odometer, speedometer, altimeter, odometer and other some other useful information.

Features of iNomad

This app provides one with the option of Key-point route planning i.e. key-points can be set by the fingers. While one performs their other activities on the gadget trips can be recorded in the background and all the recordings can be viewed later on the iPhone. All the Maps are of autorotation (map, satellite or hybrid) & finger rotation (in a free and follow mode). It supports Full screen mode and can be used for any type of transport one wants be it foot, car, bike, aircraft, paraglider, aerostat, etc. The measuring systems are in 3 standards imperial, metric, nautical. Its unique feature is that just with the use of two fingers on the voyage screen one can activate the ruler. Further moving of the fingers it’s easy to measure the distance between two points on the journey. People can download the Google Map for offline using them on their iPhones.

iOs4 is the platform that empowers the iNomad with a multitasking support.

It has a very smooth record playback supporting variable playback speed. One can reduce the level of power consumption with disabling the Magnetometer from the settings option.

Though it has so many advantages but it could be improved further with increase in speed, stability, usability & power improvements, because one of its drawbacks is that continued use of the GPS running in the background decreases the battery life.

Due to a lack of information in English about this app online, I have to confess I’m having a difficult time figuring out SoftAirKombatTeam by Giovanni Romano. I believe I understand the purpose; a GPS mapping app that allows you to create personalized maps to help you find places, remember spots for later, etc.

The actual design and look of the app is nice, and appears to have had some thought put into it. But I’m just not sure if the problem I’m having is that there’s a lack of instruction and clarity in how to actually use the app, or if the app itself is not working.

It opens to a screen where you are supposed to enter an “Identifier” (the name of the map) and a “Description” (details of the map). I did so, then hit “Create.” The app did find my longitude and latitude after a few seconds, but next to “Altitude,” it simply said “Wait….” And wait I did.

I didn’t move (as per the app’s suggestion) but the altitude was never recorded. I tried tapping “Fix” beneath it (the only option to tap at that point) and it just brought me to a search screen that said something about “Select Custom Miniature.”

I returned to the main menu and selected my “map” (although I never actually saw a map) and tapped “Nav.” (for navigate, I’m assuming). I was greeted with a green compass and the instruction to “Wait….” Which I did, again, to no avail.

Again, I’m not sure if the app simply wasn’t working or if the lack of instruction on how to set up a map meant I missed a step somewhere. Either way, I can’t say this app is easy to use, and seeing as the support page isn’t helpful to English speakers, I can’t recommend it.

SoftAirKombatTeam (iTunes Link) requires iPhone OS 4.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.

I am not a biker, and some of you may say that disqualifies me from having an opinion on this app. Some of you may even be right, so I won’t try to critique the actual content of Best Biking Roads. Even if I were a biker it would be impossible for me to actually go out and ride all (or even some) of these routes before writing a review, so I’ll stick to just reviewing the app itself.

Gotta love the straightforward start screens.

Best Biking roads is the companion app to the website of the same name. It boasts that it is the largest motorcycle routes site on the web, and has an impressive list of routes to back up that claim:

While the app gives you access to the same information available for free on the website, it is intended to be easier, faster, and of course more mobile to access it in app form.

Pros

The app is quick and easy, starting up with  just a few essential buttons on the main screen (Browse Routes, Create Route, Login, plus a tiny info link and link to the website).

Actually not a good ride. Take 280 instead.

The options to browse are simple and intuitive: tap to search your immediate area, search by entering text, browse a list of areas in the world, or drag crosshairs around a world map and drop it where you want to find routes.

Route details are just like on the website. You can view detailed ratings and comments from riders who have been on the route more recently than when it was first entered in the database. You can also view most routes on a map (though the app currently includes no photos).

Creating a route is actually brilliant. You are first located on the map using location services, then invited to drag the map and drop a pin to start the route. You can drag the map freely and place as many waypoints as you like, then drop an endpoint. As you drop pins the app calculates the appropriate roads to travel to get to those locations, so be sure to drop as many waypoints as necessary to keep your route accurate. After completing the map portion you are then presented with an opportunity to rate the route’s criteria and enter comments on the ride.

Cons

The invisible box covers most of Europe, west to Nova Scotia and south to the Equator.

The app currently has some bugs that do not render it unusable by any means, but do make it sometimes a frustrating experience.

These are strange little text-handling bugs or quirks that can be squashed easily I’m sure in an update, but right now they’re just strange sauce in an app that otherwise is well thought out and has very useful information.

Overall

Best Biking Roads is a great resource for any biker wanting to find routes nearby or when planning a weekend ride; or for letting the other 11,000+ registered users of the website know about that great new route you just created. Once the bugs are squashed (and maybe photos added?), it will only get better.

I’ve used nearly every single iPhone remote desktop viewing App there is. It used to be a very important part of my home theater/computer set up, and the entire time I’ve owned an iOS Device, I’ve had an App that works with the VNC Server, so I was delighted to finally try out the newly released RealVNC Viewer for the iPad (which is a universal App which also works on the iPhone).

For those of you not familiar with VNC, they are the leading software developers for remote desktop viewing on the PC, and Mac. You can connect to your PC or Mac Desktop from any web-enabled computer, via either the web interface or the VNC Viewer software, so long as you’re running the VNC Server on your home computer. There are three different levels of the software, each which offers different features and OS Compatibility – Check here for details. For the simple user – the Personal Edition is perfect, but for businesses and Mac users, the Enterprise Edition is best.

Like I’ve previously said, there are quire a few remote desktop Apps on the App Store, and most of which actually connect to the VNC Server – having an official product from the Real VNC Crew is a treat, this App is built from the ground up for ease of use and functionality, and runs beautifully on the iPad. Not only does the wider iPad screen offer a better view of your desktops, but it’s much easier to work on files and projects with the larger space. One of the features I really appreciate, that some of the other Remote Desktop Apps don’t have is that it lets you select how to interact with your desktop either by keeping your mouse fixed – and moving the screen around it, or by allowing your finger to both move the mouse as well as the desktop view – my personal favorite method. The Zoom (by pinching) works perfectly, and the entire time I was testing (several times over the course of several days) I never once crashed. Which brings me to another point – VNC Viewer can automatically change and configure your resolution and performance based on your connection speed.

As for typing, there is also not only a full keyboard (which includes ctrl, alt, arrows, esc, and more), but also a command or shortcut keyboard which takes up just a small area of space so that you don’t have to keep using half of your screen when you want to do things like use the F-Keys or Arrow Keys. One feature missing on the App that the regular PC Viewer has is document transfer, which would be absolutely brilliant – but I understand why they didn’t include it (as it might be data heavy and/or a memory hog). The App however does have a text copy/paste transfer, which is so much more convenient and useful than you might even think. I used it several times to copy urls, and email addresses to save onto my iPad.

Overall though, you should trust the experts in this field, the Official Real VNC App is built with the power VNC user in mind. People who use multiple computers, on multiple OS’s with Multiple screen resolutions, etc are going to find this a real treat. This App was made for power business use – but even Free Edition users are going to love having access to their computer from anywhere – I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t find this useful.

While, yes, there are cheap or even free Remote Desktop Apps on the App Store – I highly recommend VNC Viewer for professional and even personal use. The price is really very reasonable for this powerful trustworthy tool, a reflection on the quality of software that you are getting.
