Everlater – A Travel Journal You Can Share

Version – 2.1

USER REVIEW

Everlater Travel Journals 1 200x300 Everlater Travel Journals User ReviewI love to travel. I’ve lived overseas and traveled through 21
countries so far, with more planned in the near future. One thing I’ve
never been inspired to do however, is keep a journal of my travels.
Carrying a blank book means added weight, and in order to share its
contents I would have to wait until I returned home. I tried using a
laptop and even my mobile phone, but uploading photos to Flickr,
describing snippets of my trip Everlater Travel Journals 2 200x300 Everlater Travel Journals User Reviewon a blog, and using maps via Google
Maps turned out to be a time consuming piecemeal way of sharing my
adventures with family and friends.

Sites like TripIt are starting to approach what I have been looking
for though, and one recent contender in particular stands out way
ahead of the others: Everlater (an anagram for e-traveler). Everlater
is a “whole” application, making the most optimal use of both a Web
based app and an iPhone based companion app.

It’s “whole” in another important way, too: you can plan your trip -
even making use of details from similar trips others before you have
Everlater Travel Journals 3 200x300 Everlater Travel Journals User Reviewtaken – and share your plans with friends and family. Then when you’re
traveling you can capture your experiences on Everlater, and your
friends and family can see them. Pictures, commentary, maps, videos -
all available in one place! And there’s more. Everlater connects to
Facebook, Twitter and email to make sharing and notifications simple.

Last summer, I spent a month in Australia and journaled my travels for
the first time – using Everlater! It was easy and took very little
time away from the activities in which I was engaged. The best feature
was that in places where 3G and wifi weren’t available (I was in far
north Queensland, near Cape Tribulation – you’re lucky to find a
landline there!), I still could use my iPhone to log details offline
for synchronization and uploadingEverlater Travel Journals 4 200x300 Everlater Travel Journals User Review later, when wifi was available. This
alone saved loads of money on roaming fees!

As you log your activities, you can add details about specific
restaurants, sights, lodging, travel tips, transportation and more.
All these can be viewed by other travelers, enhancing their plans and
helping to inform the Everlater community.

Everlater is a nascent but solid solution to mobile travel journaling,
and your friends and family will love the fact that they can
vicariously join you on your journey. This summer I’m off to South
Africa – I hope all of you will follow my adventures on Everlater. And
even better – let me follow YOUR adventures! You can find me at

Review – “Extend your iPhone’s utility with APPtility!”

APPtilities 65 in 1 1 200x300 APPtilities iPhone App ReviewHave you noticed that a lot of the good utility apps cost money? Well what if I were to tell you that you could get over 65 different apps for just $0.99? Well that’s exactly what you get when you download APPtilities | 65+ in 1 onto your “iDevice!” It has everything from social network interfaces to camera and systemAPPtilities 65 in 1 2 200x300 APPtilities iPhone App Reviewinformation apps; over 65 of them total!

When you open APPtilities, the main menu is set up a lot like the dashboard on your iDevice! You can easily rearrange and delete apps by touching and holding an app to enter the app management mode and either dragging icons to a new location, or touching the little “x” to delete that app.

APPtilities 65 in 1 3 200x300 APPtilities iPhone App ReviewThe great thing about a lot of the apps included in APPtilities is how simple they are! For example, the voice memo app just has aAPPtilities 65 in 1 4 200x300 APPtilities iPhone App Review “+” button to add new memos. Removing them is as simple as swiping and touching the “Delete” button that pops up! The camera app is also pretty basic. It adds a little bit of extra functionality, without making the interface complicated!

All of the utilities that I tried had very simple to learn controls, and the developers added one more feature that I think a lot of people will really appreciate! If you go to the last screen you’ll see a “Web Apps” icon. Touching this icon will bring up a web browser. All you have to do is browse to the web app you want to use later with this browser and touch the “Add Shortcut” button in the bottom right corner of the screen. Once you do that all you have to do is type in a name for the web app and it will appear in the APPtilities dashboard as another app!

Another great feature is the ability to create one-touch buttons for getting in contact with people! To do this all you have to do is open up the “Shortcuts” icon that starts out by default on the last screen, next to the “Web Apps” icon. You can set these buttons to call, email, or sms any contact in your address books and they are a great way to stay in contact with people!

What I came to find is that the more I played with this app, the more features I became fond of! Something that shouldn’t be taken for granted either is the fact that this app can save you a lot of time if you just need something quickly and don’t want to install another app for it. If you’ve ever considered buying any of the cheap little utilities like calculators, RSS readers, metronomes, and dictionary’s that the App Store has to offer, but you decided against it because of price this is really a no-brainer. So if you’re still reading this, what are you waiting for? Download your copy of APPtilities today for the $0.99 from the App Store!

Sploro – NY Subway Tour ($9.99)

Version – 1.0

Review – “Take a $10 tour of NYC and learn about the history of its Subway system!”

If you’ve ever done much traveling and/or site-seeing you probably Sploro NY Subway Tour 1 200x300 Sploro NY Subway Tour iPhone App Reviewknow that hiring a tour-guide can be quite expensive. Well thanks to Sploro, your iPhone can now double as your own personal tour guide! In this review I’ll be taking a look at the tour of the NY Subway system, but there are plenty of other destinations available in the App Store if you’re interested!

When you open Sploro the first thing you see is a cute graphic with small photos of landmarks with feet shown walking between them. At the bottom of this screen are 3 menu options. The first one will take you straight to your tour, and the other two will show you list of other available tours close Sploro NY Subway Tour 2 200x300 Sploro NY Subway Tour iPhone App Reviewto the one you’re viewing and allow to keep up with the latest updates on upcoming tours as they become available!

The first screen you will see once you get started on your tour is an overview of all the stops you will make along the way. The overview includes a thumbnail picture, a title, a general location and a short paragraph of information. At the bottom of the screen are some basic navigation buttons. The “Map” button Sploro NY Subway Tour 3 200x300 Sploro NY Subway Tour iPhone App Reviewwill give you an overview of where all the stops on the tour are, the “Directions” button will give you a summary the directions for getting from one point to another and the “Tour Details” is a comprehensive list of all stops on the tour with some basic information about what it is you will see on it!

All you have to do to get started on the tour is touch the first stop. When you do you’ll be taken to a screen with some photos at the top, playback controls just below those and “Map” and “Directions” buttons at the bottom of the screen. Finding the starting point is simple. You can either touch the “Directions” button to receive directions, or touch the “Map” button to view an overview of your tour. From the map overview you can touch the button in the upper right corner of the screen to see where you are in relation to the stops on your tour.

Once you have found the place the tour specifies that you start out just touch the play button. In the NY Sploro NY Subway Tour 4 200x300 Sploro NY Subway Tour iPhone App ReviewSubway Tour the first audio talks about the history of the New York Subway and the important role that it played in making New York City the largest tourist stop in the United States! While you’re listening to the audio you can “swipe” through the pictures related to that site as well.

Once you’re done at your current destination all you have to do is touch the “skip forward” button to switch the app to the next destination. Again you will be given the same two buttons at the bottom of the screen to help you find the next destination. You can either use the ‘Directions” or just walk towards the next point on the map using your iPhone’s GPS to see where you are in relation to it.

I’ll have to say that I was very Sploro NY Subway Tour 5 200x300 Sploro NY Subway Tour iPhone App Reviewimpressed with the wealth of historical information that was included in this particular tour. Even though I don’t live in New York it was very interesting to find out about the history of the Subway, from how it was built to what kind of an impact it has made over the years! This coupled with the integrated tools to help you find your way make this app a winner in my opinion!

After seeing this app, and all of the great information it contains I would definitely recommend it! While the price did seem a bit high at first, it is obvious that a lot of work went into putting all of this material together. I know that I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for Sploro tours in areas where I intend to travel to in the future. If you’re planning a trip to New York, or if you live close and would like to know a little about it’s history then what are you waiting for? Check out Sploro today!

Version – 1.0

REVIEW – “Find great food while traveling in Jeddah!”

6FFD1000 5577 4DCA 8714 EC50F928BEA9iphone photo JeddahFood iPhone App Review
Whether you live in or are planning on taking a trip to Jeddah in Saudia Arabia, JeddahFood is an app that you might be interested in. If you’re familiar with the area you may have noticed that Google searches for things like food there turn up very few results. This app will not only help you find the results you’re looking for, but also find out whether it is a place worth eating at!

23529360 9922 492E B025 33BCC72EB23Ciphone photo JeddahFood iPhone App Review
When you open up JeddahFood you’ll start out at the Near Me page. From here all you have to get started is touch the “Start” button on the left side of the screen. You’ll be presented with a list of different kinds of food. The list is fairly comprehensive, containing everything from a variety of different “Middle Eastern” foods to juice bars and fast food!

The nice thing about the category view of this app is how detailed it is. For A7E37B24 87A4 4077 8595 5510DDD25547iphone photo JeddahFood iPhone App Review example if you choose the “Fast Food” option you are presented with a list of different types of fast food. You can quickly and easily choose from Pizza, Burgers, Chicken, etc. It is even as specific as to differentiate between “Middle Eastern” foods, dividing them into categories like “Moroccan, Saudi and Egyptian.

Another great thing about this app is all of the information you can get about the restaurants. When you find the one you are interested in and select it you’ll not only get it’s location, but also phone numbers, websites, reviews and comments. While I can’t speak to the accuracy of the locations since I don’t live in Saudi Arabia, I will say that there seems to be a great deal of information and comments on the websites.

While the category search is one of the best I’ve seen, if you know exactly what you’re looking for there is a search function as well. You can specify your search to only show results within a certain radius of your current location, to a specific district, or even to how much money you’re willing to spend.

There are a few other menu options as well that are useful. The first is a “Recents” page where you can quickly see what restaurants you’ve looked7AD4E7CC D9B2 422E B65B 81D3E0189DBDiphone photo JeddahFood iPhone App Review
at previously. There is also a “Bookmarks” page that will show you a list of any restaurants that you choose to “Bookmark.” This makes it easy to make a list of places to visit if you are traveling! The final option the a “Settings” screen. From here you can link the app to your Facebook, Twitter, and even a “Jeddahfood.com” account should you choose to create one.

F292A365 91E0 443B 99D5 42D98707C02Ciphone photo JeddahFood iPhone App Review The one thing I will say is that, when compared to the rest of the App Store, the app does seem a little overpriced. With that said, the results you get with this app are definitely top notch and you might not find them anywhere else, so they might be worth it. This is definitely not your typical free social networking app.

All things considered in the big picture of things if you are traveling abroad and will have good internet access with your iPhone this app probably is worth the $3.99 that they are charging for it. If you’re still not sure though I’d encourage you to head to their website and check it out for yourself. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the detailed information you can get, and the format it’s presented in on the iPhone is simple and concise!

MIDTOWNinmypocket Puts a Neighborhood at Your Fingertips

MIDTOWNinmypocket Puts a Neighborhood at Your Fingertips is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $1.99   Score: 6/10   By Jose Ralat MaldonadoMIDTOWNinmypocket

The Modern Museum of Art. Bergdorf-Goodman. Applebee’s. MIDTOWNinmypocket by AppFury, LLC, to paraphrase Ol’ Blue Eyes, wraps Midtown Manhattan around your finger. This is true for fanny-pack wearing Midwesterners and jaded Gothamites alike. While it’s difficult to get lost in the neighborhood, the sheer number of boutiques and cultural institutions can overwhelm even the native New Yorker.

And like many New Yorkers, I find Midtown as frightening as a child does a clown. I only schlep to the land of Umbrella-holding tourist guides and gratuitously priced undergarments when I meet up with department-store or bank employees for lunch or a drink or have tickets to a Broadway show. However, with MIDTOWNinmypocket I can eliminate much of the sidewalk congestion and hone in on my desired destination.

This app lists 900 central Manhattan businesses where the user can shop, dine, drink and take in the sights. The user can navigate the directory via the proximity option or by category. Categories range from the obvious (Restaurants and Hotels) to the head-scratching (Gas and Pets, neither of which locations). To be sure, the developer has a thorough knowledge of one of the most famous destinations on earth. The most useful categories are the food and shopping ones, especially because MIDTOWNinmypocket includes discounts available at district establishments, like 10 percent off at Pop Burger and 20 percent off at the Excelsior Hotel.

Allow me to give and example of the app’s utility. Say you’re catching the latest retrospective at MOMA and have a hankering for haute cuisine or big-box chain restaurants. Use the “near me” function in the top right corner to search for your dining experience with Google maps. If you’re interested in perusing listings, the profiles list contact information and Web sites for those seeking further knowledge.

Curiously, some expected Bars entries were absent. Where are the stellar Campbell Apartments in Grand Central Terminal or the craft-beer palace The Ginger Man? Both magnets for visitors in search of Big Apple glitz and stiff suits, they merit inclusion in the MIDTOWNinmypocket’s next update.

The reason for my lower than average score is the most frustrating of snafus some apps are all together prone to: Freezing. While looking through the bar listings, I selected one only to have the MIDTOWNinmypocket app freeze my iPhone. Twice! Repairing my beloved toy (and revenue source) took much longer than the writing of this review. Based on the single occurrence, I cannot in good faith give MIDTOWNinmypocket more than a mid-range score. No matter how useful and how beneficial to tourists and natives it may be. Hopefully the stability issues will be resolved with the next update.

It isn’t the only neighborhood directory app by the developer. AppFury, LLC, has applications for New York City’s SoHo nabe, with others in the works for Aspen, Los Angeles, Toronto and many more in the works.

MIDTOWNinmypocket requires iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Need to commit yourself to a hospital but don’t know the location of the nearest facility? Maybe you’d like to “get your drink on,” but don’t know where the nearest watering-hole is? Perhaps you need help finding the nearest gas station so you can purchase quality, vending machine products? Wonder no more! Just consult AroundMe!

AroundMe is a “location-aware” utility which allows its user(s) to find businesses and services, such as banks/ATM’s, gas stations, hospitals, hotels and other service-based facilities using the location features incorporated within Apple’s mobile devices.

iPhone users can use AroundMe to pinpoint their location then find the nearest service-based facility they need, using AroundMe’s alphabetized list of services or by searching for a service not included in the list, using AroundMe’s built-in search feature:

Untitled25

Users aren’t restricted to searching using the location-aware feature. Users are provided the option of searching by Zip Code, City or Neighborhood Name:

Untitled28

When searching for services/facilities, AroundMe provides the user with a list of its search results in order, beginning with the service/facility nearest to your location and working it’s way “outward:”

Untitled29

Once you find the service/business you’re looking for, simply tap the appropriate business/facility and AroundMe brings you to an “Info” screen, (powered by Google maps) showing the mapped location of the business/facility name, address and distance from your location, with a red pin, labeled with a dark, opaque identifier containing a blue arrow on its right. There is also a reference compass in the upper, left corner of the display. Tapping the blue arrow brings you to a contact screen, pre-filled with the businesses contact information, i.e. name, address and telephone number. This screen allows you to post the information to Twitter and/or Facebook (I wouldn’t suggest posting gas stations on either, unless you’re a “washed-up” pop star) and gives users the option of showing the route (from your location) or adding the contact to your “Favorites.” Your current location is represented by the same pulsating, blue pin found standard in the iPhones’s “Maps” application (as mentioned earlier):

Untitled26

From the “Info” screen, users have a variety of options, indicated by the icons located at the bottom of the screen. Beginning with the lower left icon, users can “Show Route,” “Post on Twitter (again)” and “Post on Facebook (one more time).” While on the “Show Route” screen, users have the option of showing the route in the default “Maps” application or in “Navigon MobileNavigator (which must be installed on your device):”

Untitled27

The route display screen provides users with those same options included in the “Maps” application. The “Telephone” icon pulls up the businesses telephone number(s):

Untitled30

The “Email” icon allows users to email the businesses name and address and a link to it’s location in Google maps and the “+” icon allows users to add the business to their “Contacts” or “Favorites:”

Untitled31

That said, I loathe shopping. When my wife ordered me asked me to go furniture shopping with her yesterday, I initially balked at the idea. Then I realized that an excursion (shopping or otherwise) would provide me with a perfect opportunity to put AroundMe through it’s paces..

During our drive, I repeatedly searched for businesses (using categories and manual search) as we approached/passed them and AroundMe found and mapped out every single one, including “Mom and Pop” stores. In addition, selecting the “Nearby” option in the alphabetized main menu provided me with a listing of all adjacent cities. Selecting the city brought me to a Wikipedia page for that city, providing me with demographic information of the city, time zone, zip code(s), area codes and a map of the city, within the state and the country, as well as a plethora of other data:

Untitled32
Untitled33

All in all, I found AroundMe to be surprisingly accurate and reliable. It’s simple and easy to use and provides users with all the information they need when seeking/finding businesses or services in any area. It’s an incredibly valuable utility and, given that it’s free, should have a reserved spot within everyone’s app library. I really can’t speak highly enough of this application.

UrbanCompass Tells You Where to Go (But Not Quite How to Get There)

UrbanCompass Tells You Where to Go (But Not Quite How to Get There) is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: Free*    Score: 5/10     By Anna PapachristosUrbanCompass

Everyone, at some point or another, has needed directions.  Whether you’re traveling in unfamiliar territory or simply looking for something new and exciting in your own area, one can’t know where everything is at all times.  With UrbanCompass by The Good Life, users are supposed to be able to do just that – find directions.  However, these “directions made easy” may be a bit more misleading than promised.

UrbanCompass is designed to guide users to their destination with only a compass and a map (but only for iPhone 3GS users).  You can use the search function to enter what you’re looking for, including a specific address if you desire, or you can choose from the list of quick-search buttons: bar, restaurant, coffee, grocery store, bank, shopping, hotel and gas station.  (Simply tap on the ‘x’ on the compass to access this menu.)  When using the quick-search buttons, UrbanCompass sorts results by distance, allowing you to choose which nearby spot you’d prefer.

UrbanCompass will then provide a map labeling your current location, the location of your destination, the distance you must travel and a compass to set you off on your way.  Users can change the appearance of their map from Standard to Hybrid view a la Google Maps and vice versa under the ‘Settings’ menu by tapping on the icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.  This menu also allows users to auto center their location on the map and use UrbanCompass Connect.

UrbanCompass Connect allows you to send their your location to a friend so they can find you using the app as well.  As long as you are within range of 3G coverage, you can access UrbanCompass anywhere in the world.

However, claims that UrbanCompass provides “simple but useful navigation” that is “as intuitive as possible” and “easily accessible” have proven somewhat questionable when put to the test.  When searching for local restaurants, of which I already know the exact location, I found that UrbanCompass had failed to update their information recently because places that had changed names or closed were still listed as hot spots.  With users depending on this app as a supposedly useful tool, it would be a shame to see people being misdirected to non-existent places.

Another issue is simply finding your destination.  When using the map feature, I was unable to zoom in to see exactly which streets I should be using to reach my ending point.  Each time I would pinch or stretch the screen for a better view, the screen remained stuck for only a moment before it returned to its indistinguishable self.  Attempting this too often then made the map glitch and turn to grid form, which was only reversible by exiting the app and reloading it again.  I will acknowledge that the developers recently issued an update to fix a supposed bug, but it certainly was not to correct this particular problem.

Also, it seems UrbanCompass will only be of use if you are able to walk to your destination, for one must constantly be looking at the directional arrow of the compass and exactly which street to turn onto despite the tiny scale used on the map itself.  The last thing we need is another reason for drivers to be distracted in their cars!  The texting epidemic has been terrible enough, let alone an app that specifically requires you to keep your eyes on it (not the road) at all times.  Bring a companion if you really have the need to use this app so they can navigate for you.

*The price noted is a special release price, which ends March 20.

UrbanCompass requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with the iPhone 3GS.
