You have the option of four basic colors. There is no eraser which I found frustrating at times but there is an undo button so that you can try and fix any mistakes you make.

The bright colors make a nice contrast against the black and will create stunning pictures, but that is only half the fun of this app. All you have to do is tap the Glow button and it is as if someone turned on the lights behind the picture and really made the drawing glow.

I think this is a fun and interesting app and it has been making great strides in the app store, so much so that it has been repeatedly copied. Personally I think it could use a few more features (like being able to import other pictures as a background or having an eraser) in order to really make it worthwhile.

But in any case it will be great fun for kids and adults may not mind toying around with it as well.

ToonPAINT - iPhone App ReviewI love any app that really lets me be creative and fun and this app has to be one of the best. ToonPAINT takes your own photos and turns them into sketches, which you then get to paint!

This app is actually very good at what it does and that truly impressed me, because unlike other apps that give you a blurred, sort of randomized product of your actual picture, the end result from ToonPaint was easily recognizable and looked great.

Even better was that I could adjust the sharpness of the edges which allowed me to make it really look the way I wanted. I could even change the amount of gray and black in the picture to ensure that even the shadowing looked right. Then just for a natural look I would tell it to soften it up and then the picture is ready for paint.ToonPAINT - iPhone App Review

The app gives you four colors that you can change, so it’s a bit like having a paint pallet. To change a color simply double tap the color you want to change, you then have three options. You can either choose colors from a rainbow pallet, choose colors from the picture you took, or pick colors that you have already used. All of these are incredibly useful and great to make sure your picture turns out the way  you want it.

You can change the size of your brush by clicking the brush icon and you can zoom in and out using the pinch motion. I would have liked a default icon though so that I could move around the picture without having to zoom in and out.

If you make a mistake simply click the bomb and you can undo whatever you need to. You can also just paint over your mistake as well.

ToonPAINT - iPhone App ReviewOnce you are done you can save it as just as sketch or as a sketch with paint, in regular resolution and high resolution which is a nice feature if you get a picture that you really like and want to show off.

To give you an idea of how well this works with just about any picture I used a picture of my Siamese cat and it still looked great. Pictures with people in them look just like the people as well.

All in all I was very impressed with this app and I think both kids and adults can have a lot of fun with it.

REVIEW – “An easy to use and fun version of MS Paint for the iPhone!”

iPhone App Review - Doodle BuddyIf you are like me then you probably like to doodle when you are bored somewhere or listening to someone speak for a long period of time. Doodling can help you focus and it can also help you get your point across when you are speaking to someone. Well now you can doodle even when you do not have a pen and paper.

When you first open Doodle Buddy it will do a search to see if anyone on your WiFi connection is running the same program. If they are then you can draw together, if not then you get the whole canvas to yourself. (You can choose the option regardless.) Then you are given your blank canvas to with what you will.

Now if you are like me and have little to no artistic skill then don’t worry because the app also offers stamps and backgrounds to help you make a great picture. The app also gives you the option of doodling on top of a picture from your camera or your photo album.iPhone App Review - Doodle Buddy

The first button on the bottom left hand corner is the undo button and it goes pretty far back so don’t be afraid to use it. Next to is the brush button. Click it and it gives you the option to smudge, erase or choose from an assortment of colors to draw with. At the bottom you can even adjust the size of your brush.

iPhone App Review - Doodle BuddyThe next button along the bottom is the stamp button. This gives you a number of pictures that you can easily add to your work of art. You can even choose to make them large or small but I did not notice a very significant difference between the two. The next button lets you choose what to make as your background. You can either choose from a number of preset backgrounds, return the background to white, or use photos or camera to use one of your own pictures.

An interesting thing here is that you can get background like a chalk outline or a tic tac toe board or even boxes and dots for those of you who remember how to play that game.

The final button is the setup button which allows you to save your creation or send it along to someone else!

Then when are done or you want to start over, simply shake the iphone and the screen erases.

This app is fun for those who have a few moments to spare and I’ve seen some pretty impressive people from those who are artistically inclined. My only problem with this is that the brush has a jagged shape much like drawing with a crayon. I would love to see a selection of brushes here and one that has a solid outline so that I can make finer details and have a smoother doodle.

KiwiPixel’s new app, Inspire, takes the fun and ease-of-use native to basic painting apps and adds the professional look, feel, and functionality that you would never expect from an application that remains so simple and enjoyable to use.

As one who never graduated to an artistic sophistication beyond watercolor painting in kindergarten, I immediately found myself utterly enamored with the very activity I had long shunned as a result of my sorely lacking artistic talents. Although I still possess no legitimate skill as an artist, Inspire has a way of inspiring one’s artistic imagination more than your standard, run of the mill desktop or mobile painting tool ever could.

In other words, when KiwiPixel promised a professional-style application, they didn’t fail to deliver.

Hands-down, Inspire is the most addictive and fun painting app available for the iPhone, largely because of its ability to simulate wet paint on a canvas, which can then be blended and twirled into an array of stunning effects courtesy of four different brush types: flat brush, round brush, fan brush and palette knife.

Despite a somewhat hefty price tag of $4.99, a host of neat features makes the expense worth it. They include:

  • Each brush comes in many different sizes to allow large, sweeping strokes as well as fine, precise strokes.
  • Brushes can be loaded with different amounts of paint, including no paint at all for a dry brush.
  • Varying amounts of pressure can be used with a dry brush to achieve many different kinds of blending effects.
  • Brushes can be rotated a full 360 degrees to allow a variety of different strokes.
  • 200 levels of undo and redo are available.
  • Choose any paint color quickly and easily with the natural color picker.
  • The eyedropper tool can be used to select paint colors that are already on the canvas.
  • Save up to 25 paintings in your gallery and easily export any painting to your Photos.

If you spring for the app, be sure to read the tips & tricks section or you may fail to realize just how much this application can really do.

One of the coolest painting apps ever devised, Inspire just might inspire the artist you never knew existed within you.

Inspire requires the iPhone OS 3.1 or later and is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch.
