REVIEW – “This app is a real attention-getter!”
Everyone once in a while you come across an 
app and think “Why didn’t I think of that?” Well SwingWords by Vidiag is one of those apps! Swingwords is a utility that will allow you to communicate messages to your friends that are far away! The basic idea is that you write a short message into the ShowWords app and then wave your device back and forth in the air. The app will detect the speed that you are moving the device at and 
display your message one letter at a time, thus creating the illusion that the entire message is being displayed in the air!
When you open up this app you’ll be greeted by a brief splash screen. A word of warning, there is music that is played during the splash screen and unfortunately the music does not pay attention to whether your device is set to “vibrate.” Once you are past the splash screen you’ll see a list of pre-programmed phrases that you can use right away. Touching any of them will bring you to the “Editor” screen.
The editor in this app allows you to do all kinds of things. Not only can you enter any text you want, but you can change the color of each individual letter, change the size of the words as they scroll, and change all kinds of 
detailed options about how the words are shown as you move the device. There is even an option to “mirror” all of the words which will allow you to see what it looks like in a mirror!
To start showing a word all you have to do is touch the “Run” button in the upper right corner of the editor. You’ll see a message telling you to use the app in the dark and wave it at a constant rhythm. The more constant your rhythm the easier it will be to read the words that result. I found that while it took a little bit of getting used to that it really wasn’t that hard. The only thing to keep in mind is that you really can’t go super fast because the words tend to kind of blur together.
If you’d rather create a new phrase all together all you have to do is touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the main menu. This will bring 
up the same blank editor but without any text entered into it. From the main menu you can also remove and/or reorder phrases. This will help you keep phrases together that you might want to use in the future!
Another great feature of this app is that it is able to use “Emojis.” In case you don’t know what those are they are basically a set of emoticons and other small pictures that are included on most Japanese phones. The iPhone has support for them, but it must be enabled. Not only does this app support using them, but if you have not enabled them already it will allow you to enable them!
It really is amazing that such a simple app can be so much fun. While some may roll their eyes and talk about how “there really is an app for everything,” I can confidently say the entertainment value of this app alone is worth the meager $0.99 that it will set you back. If you are a fan of Voice over IP technology and have not tried it
on your mobile device yet this could be the next must-have app you’ve been looking for! SessionTalk SIP Client will allow you to connect your iPhone to your favorite VOIP service and use an interface that works and feels extremely similar to the iPhone’s built in phone functions.
When you open this app up the first thing you’ll need to do is set up your VOIP service. If you don’t already have a service set up you’ll need to go and sign up for an account. You’ll see a list of VOIP services that have pre-configured settings if you choose to use those. I was able to easily find each of them using Google and choose one. With that said there is also a “Generic SIP” button that will leave all the settings pretty much untouched and ready for you to customize with any other VOIP serves that supports SIP phones.
Once you get everything setup you’re ready to start using the app. At the bottom of the screen you’ll find a menu bar where you can pull up a keypad to make a quick call, browse through your phone’s contact list or view recent calls that you’ve made/received. You can also keep a “Favorites” list of numbers that you call regularly if you like.
The big difference between this app and a lot of apps that have been released like this is that it will actually allow you to make VOIP calls over your phone’s 3G connection! The call quality was descent with the services that I tested. Obviously not quite as good as a solid WiFi connection, but the app can easily switch between 3G and WiFi connections and stay connected to your call!
This app does a great job of including features where other clients similar to it sometimes drop the ball. For example, I have tested several VOIP clients that have a different phone interface that does not include the ability to put a call on speakerphone. This app not only includes that but also has the ability to use a Bluetooth headset built into it as well!
The one thing that I would criticize is that while there are some VOIP services that have their settings already built into this app, if your service is not one of those it can be a little confusing to get it set up. Another downer is that you’ll find that some VOIP services will support SIP devices will not, so shop carefully! Besides these small things that are really out of the control of the developers this app does what it says and does it well. Whether you have already been using VOIP as a part of your home communications or you are looking to save money by harnessing this technology, this app is a great cheap way to access it from your mobile device. REVIEW – “Check prices and share products with your friends with TapScanner!”
If you’re a regular at AppShouter you’ve probably noticed that I’ve already reviewed several bar scanning apps in the past. So what, you might ask, is different about TapScanner? Well I’m here to tell you that it’s all about the networking! While RedLaser has already established itself as a leader in this category of apps, 
TapScanner is attempting to take that winning formula and add both a new interface and an easy way to interact with some popular social networks!
One of the things that I was impressed with is that the interface of this app is extremely polished for a newly released app. The graphics are all simple and yet at the same time very smooth looking. When you open this app up for the first time you will be asked to register with the TapBase website. Some may see this as an intrusion of privacy but what it’s for is the social aspect of the app, and all 
they ask is for an email address and password.
Once you are registered you’re ready to start scanning things. The main screen that you start at has three buttons along the top of the screen, two buttons in the center and two small buttons in the bottom right corner. To scan a barcode all you have to do is touch the “Scan” button on the right side of the screen. The scanner itself works extremely well. I did not have any trouble whatsoever scanning barcodes as long as they were of the standard type.
If you find the scanner cumbersome or you have an iPod touch and have no camera you can also manually enter barcodes by touching the “Tap” button just to the left of the Scan button. However you choose to enter the barcode, once you have one entered it will quickly search an internet database for that particular bar code and then display the results on the screen. Unfortunately this is one area that this app seems to have difficulty with. I scanned a variety of objects that I had laying 
around the house and many of them did not show up displaying a “ERROR: NOT FOUND” message.
With that said, the company behind this app has not even quite published their website yet so I’m betting that the amount of barcodes that read properly will increase greatly with time. Assuming this is the case, the social features of this app are really quite nice. Not only can you quickly and easily post an item to your 
facebook or twitter, but you can also email it to your friends! This app also keeps a list of all the products that you have shared in any manner on the “Shares” screen of this app. This allows you to quickly and easily review a product repeatedly to different people!
So in summary I’d have to say that this app has absolutely huge potential! The interface, both for browsing products that you have found and for scanning and entering barcodes, is one of the slickest that I have seen in the App Store. If the developer continues to improve its database of items this could in time become the app to beat in this category, and at the very least it is worth an honorable mention for it’s great interface! If you are a social network junkie, and you like to shop, this is an app that you just can’t afford to pass up! So what are you waiting for? Head to the App Store and download TapScanner today!

I remember when I was little playing battleship with
my brothers and sisters. The game has been a classic board game for decades. It was even more exciting when they released electronic games that had sound effects and that kept track of hits and misses! Well today I’m happy to be giving away a promo code for a battleship-like game called 
Spanish Armada by Orient Maple! So stick around for the end of this review where I’ll be giving you information on how you can enter to win!
If you’ve never played a game like this before the basic concept is that each player hides 5 ships somewhere on their grid? Once both 
players have hidden all their ships you then take turns selecting squares on your opponents grid to attack! This game breaks up the action with a couple of different ways to play as well.
In the options menu you’ll find the option to select “Volley Shot” or “Salvo Shot” mode. In volley shot you take turns shooting until you miss. What this means is if you strike on of your opponents ships then you get to go again until you miss! While on the other hand, salvo shot gives each player the same amount of shots that they have ships left.
There are several other options you can set which range from sound effect levels, music levels and difficulty level. Once you have it all set up like you want you can either play a game against the computer or you can play with a friend if there is a wifi connection available! I was impressed with the network connection for wifi games. I played several games with my wife between my 3GS and her 3G iPhone and I had almost no problems at all with disconnections.
Another nice aspect of the game is that it is integrated with the OpenFeint gaming network. This allows you to compare
scores with your friends, chat, and get achievements all from one simple to use interface! Overall this game is a lot of fun and is relatively cheap as well. My wife has literally played this game for hours on end!

Oobah studio’s “Sponge” helps to bring all of your news and social networking needs together in one convenient app. Currently Sponge supports Facebook, GMail, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and RSS feeds from sites that you input. The app is extremely simple to use, just click to add a feed, insert the website, user name and email, or required information. Head back to the home screen, and refresh the page.

Between my regular day job, part time reviewing apps for 148apps.com, a fairly active social life, and a pregnant wife, my days are pretty full. Sponge is an app that helps alleviate some of the time constraints I face on a day to day basis. I like it because it allows me to one click update all of my most visited sites with any of the recent news articles, Twitter posts, status changes, and news information that I would otherwise have to spend time gathering myself.
I love using my iPod touch for social networking. The big limitation to iPods however, is their lack of 3G coverage. For those of you with constant wifi access, a 3G connection, etc., this app has even more to offer. The neat grouping of information makes navigating through the various accounts a breeze. Facebook and Twitter messages can be uploaded, emails sent back and forth, YouTube accounts of various users reviewed, and the most recent news stories retrieved, all from the comfort of one app. Find a news story you like? Post it directly into your Facebook or Twitter account without ever leaving Sponge.
Sponge is not without its flaws, however. This is especially true for iPod Touch owners. The first and most significant is the need for a wifi or 3G connection for updates. It is possible to check over information that’s been previously downloaded, while there isn’t a connection available. It certainly isn’t perfect, but it helps if you’re on the run and just need a quick update to check out later. The problem is that Sponge also continues to pop up network error messages when there is no connection available. Not a terrible problem for those with some semblance of patience, but a terror for those lacking this quality.
Sponge only updates on status, news, etc. You won’t be cycling through your friend’s list, changing settings on your accounts, or in my case, checking out the most recent web-comic strip from Ctrl-Alt-Del. You will however, find out what’s going on in your friend’s lives, exchange Twitter messages, and find out what Tim Buckley (Ctrl-Alt-Del’s writer) has been up to as of late through is news feed.
Sponge provides an excellent compact vehicle to collect all of a person’s important information into. For those people who like the convenience of having information available to them quickly and efficiently, Sponge is a solid app to achieve just that. This is a perfect app for those of you looking to speed up your surfing and sharing of content. At $2.99, it’s a cheap and easy way to stay updated.

I have tried lots of different IM clients for iPhone and iPod touch. Unfortunately most of the good ones tend to come at a price. Some of them are not too expensive, while some of them can cost $10 or more! What if I were to tell you that you could get a good IM client with push notifications built for free? Well thanks to Meebo, now you can!
The first thing you’ll need to do when you open up Meebo is set up an account. Once you set up your Meebo account you’ll be able to log in to all of the other accounts that you set 
up from Meebo.com! Setting up accounts is extremely simple. All you have to do is select the type of account that you’d like to setup and enter your username and password.
Once you have everything setup the way you want it the interface is extremely wasy to navigate. At the bottom of the 
screen is a menu with three buttons: “Buddies,” “Chats,” and “Accounts.” This allows you to have quick and easy access to your list of friends, to your open conversations and to set your status globally for all of your accounts.
One of the things that impressed me the most is the response time of this app. One of things that I’ve noticed with chat clients is that some of them have a considerable delay when chatting with friends. With most of them it is not unbearable, but with Meebo even the push notifications are snappy. I tested it using several interfaces including Facebook and MSN and the push notifications take just a couple of seconds from the time the messages are sent.
Another thing that I really liked about Meebo is that it loads up very quickly. If you receive a message while it is closed and choose to view the message within Meebo it loads very quickly and takes you directly to that conversation. Another awesome thing about Meebo is that 
all of your conversation history is saved to your account and you can see it if you login via Meebo.com
Really the only negative that I can think of with this app is that it is not quite as customizable as some apps. There is not really a way to select what kind of push notifications you receive via the app, there are no customizable skins to change the
look of Meebo, and I’m not exactly sure how long it keeps you logged in to your accounts if you don’t open the app up.
If you’ve been looking for a good messaging client then listen to me when I say this. I have tried virtually all of the IM clients out there, paid and free, and I have not found one that is easier to use and more responsive than this one. In short, if you haven’t already spent money on a IM client and you want a simple app that just works, look no further than Meebo! At the very least you should give it a try.
