Be Aware Of Your Suroundings With Awareness

Be Aware Of Your Suroundings With Awareness is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Every so often I find myself next to a car on the freeway with a driver that has earbuds in his ear. While the driver is jamming out to presumably whatever is on his iPhone, I often wonder what would happen if someone honked at him. Would he hear it?

The worst is when you see someone walking around with earbuds. Like a driver on a cell phone, the person walking is typically oblivious to their surroundings. They cross streets without looking, stop right in front of people on sidewalks, and will turn on a dime without any indication. People with earbuds are a hazard, particularly when they have the noise cannelling variety.

To combat this, essensy has created Awareness! The Headphone App. What Awareness! does is uses the iPhone’s internal microphone to pump sound to you while you are listening to your tunes. For example, if a train is coming, blaring its horn to warn you of its impending arrival, Awareness! will pump the trains sound from the microphone into your earbuds.

The app is pretty new, and I’m sure it needs some tweaks to be perfect, but it is getting a good amount of iTunes love. There are a few bad reviews, but the majority are five star reviews that say things like, “What an awesome app!!!!” and “I love it, LOVE IT”.

If you often find yourself in harms way due to your high end Shure headphones, I implore you to give Awareness a try. For the sake of humanity, just do it.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review extolling the virtues of iSequence, a sophisticated new iPad app that allows musicians to construct full-scale songs from their touch screens. That app could be overwhelming to a first time user or a novice musician, but now soundTable fills that void by providing a simplified interface and learning curve for beginners wanting to create interesting electronic sequences.

As its name implies, all controls in soundTable are manipulated from one master screen. You can easily search sound banks to find the beats, synths and other sounds you want, then drag them to the middle of the screen – the “table” – where their volume, speed and direction can be manipulated using circular turntables that surround each individual sound. As you drag sounds to the main table, they “attach” themselves visually to a master control at the bottom of the screen. These attachment lines are actually representations of sound waves and they can be manipulated by attaching additional effects to them. Ultimately, you’ll likely have a half dozen or more mini turntables on screen at once, so it can get a little confusing and often difficult to fully control.

To be fair, though, the interface in soundTable is interesting and unique and easy enough to begin with. It would help if the developers included a comprehensive help file with the app, but you will have to settle for the info button, which merely describes what each set of buttons represents. That’s certainly enough to get you going, but as users continue playing with the app they are probably going to want more and better explanations.

The sounds available in soundTable are pretty standard, but fortunately the developers have included many, many more available for download free. You can sample each sound and decide if you want it, so you don’t have to litter your iPad’s precious drive space with unwanted sounds. Hopefully there will be additional sound packs released as the app reaches maturity. At only $0.99 for the app, I wouldn’t mind paying extra for more sounds.

Graphically, soundTable really impresses. With a variety of virtual turntables and sound waves going at one time, the interface of the app looks something like an art piece. It remains to be seen (and heard) what the most ambitious of users will be able to sonically do within the confines of the iPad’s screen.

At this point, soundTable is more of a toy than apps such as iSequence, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It represents a good first step for those just now venturing into the ambient unknown.

Learn Alphabet Sounds With MyIphonics: Part Two

Learn Alphabet Sounds With MyIphonics: Part Two is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Price: $0.99    Score: 6/10    By Michelle SchustermanMyIphonicsII

MyIphonics II, developed by Johnny Ricco, is the next in line in the MyIphonics series of apps to teach children basic phonics. In a previous review of MyIphonics I, I mentioned my support for using technology like this to teach children.

My opinion of the design of this app is the same as before – I love the flashcards and think they’re a wonderful resource for pre-k and kindergarten students. I like the pictures in the Sounds menu, although I wish they were bigger, rather than having all twenty consonants on one page. I also think landscape mode might be easier for some children.

My problem is that MyIphonics II, with the exception of the game, is the exact same app as MyIphonics I. As a customer, this bothers me because the iTunes page clearly states: “MyIphonics I teaches children letter sounds. MyIphonics II teaches children beginning sounds.”

This tells me the apps will each have a different focus. Instead, the Sounds and Flash Card pages are 100% identical. That means a customer will pay twice for a second app that is two thirds the same as the first. And the full game is not included in the price for either app – it’s an additional $0.99 each. Granted, this is spelled out clearly on the developer’s website – however, this page also says the apps themselves are free, confusing the matter further.

I like the games in both versions, and I think kids would like them too. In MyIphonics II, three pictures with different beginning letters are over two pictures and one blank space. A three letter word is spelled out beneath. Kids are supposed to drag the picture that starts with the missing word to the blank space. It’s a cute concept, and I feel like it could be useful in helping kids learn.

But again, the game is only a preview – the full game is another $0.99. And this bothers me because it is the only thing that makes this app different from the first, which most customers are likely to already own. The description of the apps implies that they are different and cost a series total of $1.98, when in fact they are the same app with different games, and if you want both complete games you’re total is $3.96.

That’s not a lot of money, I know. But it feels misleading, and as a customer, that bothers me. The bottom line is this app will be a fun purchase for your child, but you probably can stick to one rather than spending money for both.

MyIphonics II is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch.  It requires the iPhone OS 3.1 or later.

iPhone App Review – Binaural Beats

iPhone App Review – Binaural Beats is a post from: Best Iphone App Review Website

 Binaural Beats (Free)

REVIEW—”Music is therapy anyone can get down to.”

Binaural Beats has got to be my favorite type of medicine. It’s funny. As a kid my mother use to always tell me that I’d study better if I turned off my music, but I have always insisted that it helps me channel my energy into my work and avoid outside distractions. I guess she saw music as that distraction, but I think Binaural Beats might be the deciding factor in this ongoing debate. With a simple and easy to navigate interface, Binaural Beats gets the job done. Still, I feel the need to note that its interface is not visually unappealing, just simple.

Having trouble sleeping? Listen to the “calm ocean with occasional seagulls calling.” Or in my case, need a study aid? Binaural Beats is at your disposal. While many of the sounds might sounds similar, if you listen long enough you’ll begin to hear the difference and a surge of understanding and ease seem to flow through you.

Binaural Beats is unique in that it allows the user to control the amount of time they would like hear the melodic sounds. It can be anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours, literally! With a musical interface that mimics that of iTunes, you can also fast forward through the sounds because they do change over time and are not the same 15 seconds of sound on repeat. Play and pause as you please.

You are also not limited to the default sounds that come with the app, simply select to add a new sound and you can choose from a variety of noises from Autumn Wind and Soft tide to Underwater. Perhaps the coolest thing with Binaural Beats has to offer is that you can record and create your own sounds from your surroundings. I particularly enjoy the sound of running water. This is definitely an app worth downloading!

How it works:

Binaural beats may influence functions of the brain besides those related to hearing. This phenomenon is called frequency following response. The concept is that if one receives a stimulus with a frequency in the range of brain waves, the predominant brain wave frequency is said to be likely to move towards the frequency of the stimulus (a process called entrainment). In addition, binaural beats have been credibly documented to relate to both spatial perception & stereo auditory recognition, and , according to the frequency following response, activation of various sites in the brain.

iPhone App Review – White Noise Lite

  White Noise Lite (Free)

Version 3.2.2

REVIEW – “White Noise Provides the Relaxing Sounds of Life”

Need a little time out? Try White Noise. Think your baby needs to hear something that will help him get to sleep? Try White Noise. Have a hard time concentrating at work with the myriad of sounds that surround you? Then you should, you guessed it, try White Noise.

This might seem like a simplistic, nonessential app, but that’s until you get a taste of it. Then you wonder how you ever lived without it.

The app itself is quite simple. Fire it up and you get a choice of 10 sounds to listen to. You might choose beach waves crashing if you are stressed and hoping for that rejuvenating vacation getaway, or you might choose extreme rain if the sound of rain relaxes and soothes you.

That’s just about all there is to this app, but you do get a nice picture to go along with your choice of sound. If it’s beach waves, for example, you might be looking at a picture of waves crashing toward the shore. Extreme rain, on the other hand, is paired with a picture of heavy rain falling on plants.

There are so many uses for this app, the options are almost dizzying. Using it for work is a great way to block out the sounds around you while still allowing you to focus on the work at hand. Some of us might have a hard time doing that if we are listening to music and might instead sing along, bop in our chairs and look online for the lyrics (hypothetically of course). But using White Noise ensures that you get the sound you are looking for but without any temptation to venture outside of the work realm.

If you have ever had a baby that can’t sleep, you know that white noise is an incredibly useful tool to get them to sleep. You can turn this on and let your baby go to sleep to the soothing sounds of rain, or the beach waves, or even the hum of an airplane ride.

It might work for your sleepless nights, too.
