One of the hottest apps of 2009 has just received a new update the Valentine’s Day holiday! Continue reading down to the bottom to find out how you can win your own copy of this fun and very educational app! Star Walk basically shows how the stars are laid out in the sky. But the stars are always moving right? Well thanks to this amazing app you can actually look at what they sky looks like in any place on the globe on any given day and time!
When I opened up Star Walk for the first time I was a little bit intimidated with all of the information on the screen. The actual app is very simple to use though. The screen that you see when you open the app up shows you a variety of information such as how full the moon is and the angle that several different planets
and also the sun are at in the sky.
Once you close the opening window you will see a part of the sky on the screen. You can navigate around in several different ways. The easiest is to just touch and drag around the screen. As the move around the sky you’ll see the names of different constellations, planets and even stars if you touch and select them. If any of the constellations move into the center of the screen then an outline of that constellation will show up with the appropriate lines drawn between the stars.
One of the coolest features of this app is its use of the iPhone 3GS accelerometer and compass. This app manages to use this hardware to allow you to simply point your device in the direction you are looking. Once you point your device up in the sky it will automatically change the part of the sky you are viewing to the part of the sky that your iPhone is facing. This makes this app the perfect tool for an astronomy novice to figure out exactly what they are looking at!
While this app is very easy to use for anyone, it also allows you to view the sky from a variety of different places and times if you are really into astronomy. If you touch the button in the upper right corner, a timeline will pop up which will allow you to drag it up or down to the date and time you’d like to view.
To view the what the sky looks like from other locations, other than your current one, all you have to do is touch the button in the lower right corner, and then touch the little globe icon. This will bring up an 
overview of the globe where you can just touch the location that you’d like to view the sky from. If you’d rather just type your desired location you can do so by touching the button in the lower left corner of this screen.
While this app is very simple to use once you get the hang of it, it would have been nice to have a little more description. It was not always obvious what the little icons represent. The good thing is that if you are curious there are detailed instructions on how
to use everything if you touch the icon in the upper left corner and then touch the question mark that pops up.
This app was featured by Apple as one of the best apps of 2009 and I would highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in astronomy! REVIEW – “A musical adventure that has you reaching for the stars”
If you’ve read any of my reviews you know I like simple games because really the only time I play games on my iphone is when I’ve got a few random minutes to spare. This game is one of those marvelous perfect games to play when you have a few stray minutes because it is relaxing and almost inspirational in a “reach for the moon” kind of way.
If you have ever played Doodle Jump then you will soon realize that Star Ride is just about the same concept with different graphics, better sounds and different controls. When you first open the game you are a little silhouette on the ground. Use your finger to move back and forth and to jump. The purpose of the game is to jump up and touch the stars, once you do that you are propelled upward and you move either right or left in order to reach the next star.
The beauty of this game comes from the almost trancelike background music and the fact that when you touch a star it plays a note. The stars can have different pitch so as you leap from star to star it is like you are creating your own music and it is very soothing and relaxing music. 
The graphics are remarkably simple but just like Doodle Jump therein lies their charm, it feels artistic and the dark blue hues add to the relaxing aspect of this game. Even when you miss a jump and plunge back down to Earth, instead of getting frustrated you simply start over and create a whole new piece of music.
The game does allow you to sign in and save scores which is great for those competitive people but the joy to this game is just in playing it and not so much struggling to get that top score. In many games I thrive for the competitive nature of it, but not this game. This game I love to play when I just need a moment to chill and escape.
One thing that did annoy me in this game was that when you first open it, it tries to get you to register for OpenFeint. This would not bother me with a free game but with a game that you pay for I would prefer the advertisement to be more subtle. I think having a clickable logo on the main screen would be enough, that way I can learn more about the product when I choose to and not feel like I have to register in order to play the game.
This game is also unique in that the free version includes everything that the pay version does. The only difference is that it includes banner ads to make up for the cost of developing the game.
Beyond that I really enjoyed this game and I might even recommend it higher than Doodle Jump even though Doodle Jump does have more obstables and bonuses, this game is just so musical and soothing that it is really just a great game to play.

Star Ride is an ability based game where you control the flight of your character, up to the highest point in the sky, jumping from star to star.
Every star you hit will make you fly higher and will increase your score. Take the blue stars to increase your score multiplier.
It’s very easy to pick up and play, making it the perfect kind of game for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Its hand drawn graphics and an its original music contribute to create a surreal and unique atmosphere.
To play, move the character horizontally with your finger, double tap the screen and jump on the first star, then follow the other falling stars to fly as high as possible. To pause the game and go back to the main menu, tap the screen with two fingers.

REVIEW – “Space All Over The Place With Astronomy Picture Of The Day”
Concentric Sky has worked with NASA to bring iPhone and iPod Touch users one stunning photograph of space a day. Each day the app is opened, a new photo is revealed. If you miss a day, you can always access the previous days’ pictures by using the back button.
The photographs are stunning shots taken in a variety of ways and feature the entire span of what astronomy can be defined as. The July 13th picture was of a volcano erupting, while July 12th featured a code sent toward local stars. More traditional photos include star formations, nebula, Hubble telescope pictures and images of Earth.
If you want, you can press “Jump to Image” to select a specific date, or have the app select one at random for you. This allows users to view more than one photograph a day if they wish.
Each image has an info button that explains what the picture is. The information is written in a friendly, easy to read manner. This is nice considering the huge scientific scope of many of the images.
If one photograph particularly grabs you, you can save it to your iPhone or iPod Touch, or share it with a friend via email.
Some of the images are large and wouldn’t open on my iPod Touch. Also, images are downloaded each day you open the app so an internet connection is needed. You are able to clear the image cache to make space as needed.
There is little purpose behind Astronomy Picture of the Day, but there is a ton of fun. The images are all high resolution and stunning. After saving a favorite to your iPhone or iPod it can become a background. The information is interesting and adds to the beauty of the pictures. Not a bad package for a free app.
