The productivity section of the App Store holds a surprisingly small percentage of total applications available – a mere 2.34% at last count. Nonetheless, to-do and other productivity-based applications are becoming more and more popular not only within the business community, but within personal usage as well. The developers at Wolter Group New York are one of the latest to satisfy this new demand with Crosscheck, an iPad-only “super-simple” productivity application for iPad.

At first glance, Crosscheck appears like a more GUI-friendly version of TaskPaper (an application that received a worthy 4.5 stars). The interface is clean and intuitive, resembling applications made for iPad by Apple.

Crosscheck uses tags and specific filters like #, @, ! and [ ] to organize content. Whilst this may seem obscure initially, it improves time and customization, as well as being quicker than going into drop-down boxes and checklists. For reference, a hash tag is used to tag certain words (think Twitter), allowing you to group certain tasks together. They can be used for time (#urgent and #quick), importance (#high and #low) or really anything you wish. @ is used for names, for example @Mark or @Stacy. ! is used to gauge the priority of a task – the more exclamation marks, the higher priority the task is. Finally, square brackets [ ] are used for dates. Crosscheck automatically configures dates into words like Tomorrow and Next Thursday depending on the date you type within the brackets, eg. [19 August 2010] transforms into Thursday. To get started, add new groups for your tasks. You can have as many as you like, and each are colour coded for quick viewing.

The portrait mode interface is refreshingly simple, with almost all of the iPad’s generous display being taken up by the content you have created. This content can be sorted manually, by priority – the number of exclamation marks, when it was created, when it is due – the date within square brackets or by an auto-sort feature, which keeps all tasks in their respective groups, but then orders it by priority within each group. Up top is the ability to create a new task, to export all tasks via e-mail and to synchronize shared items. Despite the initial $9.99 purchase, it appears that you need to buy an additional $9.99 subscription to make use of this synchronizing feature. The year’s subscription package also provides TLS encryption for document safe-keeping, and an unlimited API access – allowing other applications to link into Crosscheck.

The landscape mode of Crosscheck is where the application really feels like an official Apple app. A fixed Groups column on the lefthand side of the screen (also available by tapping ‘Groups’ in portrait mode) provides the ability to search and filter content by their group, as well as filtering by the @ and ! tags. The number of tasks within each group and filter are also visible, as well as the ability to see all upcoming items.

The interface in creating a new task is also intuitive and simple. Choose what group the task should be in and type away. An always-updating list of filters is present, specifically ones that you have created, meaning there is no need to type them in manually if you have written them before. In addition, # @ and [ ] are always present, however the priority filter – an exclamation mark – is missing. Nonetheless, the existence of these keys significantly reduces time spent typing, particularly seeing as the iPad’s keyboard requires an extra tap just to get to a non-alphabet character keyboard layout. Whenever an application is marked as done, it is crossed out with a strikethru.

The time spent learning Crosscheck is minimal – important for a productivity application. There is no excess to the application; a good use of space and focus on content is provided. The heavy use of official Apple integration in Crosscheck through the iPad SDK – for example the way to sort content or mail all tasks – gives the application an official feel to it. In other words, if you know how to use an iPad, you know how to use Crosscheck. I am impressed that it has been able to retain its simplicity and ease of use with the features that it has.

However, there are a few drawbacks. First of all, despite all of my searching, I couldn’t find a way to delete a specific task (it can only be marked as complete). Even after marking a task as complete and quitting the application, it remains there when you next open Crosscheck. In addition, Crosscheck lacks password protection – even though this may not concern mainstream users, those who are looking for local security for their private content will not be able to find it here. Even a basic level of local encryption would be a welcome addition to an otherwise impressive application.

Somewhat disappointing is the need to buy a subscription even after you’ve purchased the application to make use of the advanced features (you need a subscription if you want to collaborate with others by sharing groups and to-do items). However, a major flaw is the syncing capability itself. With no desktop app coupling the iPad version, the only form of syncing that can be done without an additional subscription is not a sync at all: merely an e-mail. However, if you do opt for the subscription package, Crosscheck syncs with a number of calendars with to-do capabilities, including Apple’s iCal and Google’s own calendar. Microsoft Outlook is also supported. Data can be exported manually through an XML document that “describes all your groups and to-do items” and the subscription package even provides an RSS Activity feed of all your tasks.

In conclusion, Crosscheck is a productivity application with an edge. The smart design coupled with excellent integration makes it a contender for one of the best designed to-do applications out there. If you’re prepared to shell out a bit more for the subscription package to enjoy full syncing, this might just be what you’ve been looking for. When used in conjunction with a productivity application on your Mac or PC, Crosscheck suddenly makes sense.

TaskPaper Review

TaskPaper Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Hog Bay Software
Price: $9.99
Version: 1.2.4

Design Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Features Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Integration Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

TaskPaper is the most open and customizable notes/projects application that I’ve seen. The time spent learning how to use it is time well spent.

What TaskPaper aims to do is streamline your ideas, without getting rid of any. How does it do this? With three sections to a new list (in other words, a new document): projects, tasks and notes. You can create tasks within projects, notes within tasks, notes within notes and all of the combinations in between. TaskPaper is built openly because your thoughts are too.

The best way to explain this simply is with an example. Let’s say you have a new project of writing a paper on the variety and diversity of iPhone applications. We’ll call the project “App Store Thesis”. Next up, outline the tasks that you need to complete. In this case, finding out how many applications are in each category would be a good place to start. Now it would be wise to create a note under this task saying where you’re going to get this data from (we recommend 148Apps.biz). Wherever you go after this is entirely up to you. You could create a new task called “Games Categories” within the task above to outline exactly how many games are in each category of the App Store. The screenshot to the right outlines this example.

All actions can be custom tagged with the @ symbol. If you mark something as @done, a line will streak across that point. You can create custom tags for whatever purpose you need.

Now that we’ve covered how it works, let’s see how it’s done. Tapping the plus (+) button at the top right of the home screen of TaskPaper will create a new list. By default, it starts off with a new project. If you want to change this to a task or note, tap return. Whenever nothing is written on a line, tapping return will change the format to project, note or task. If a line does have text on it, tapping return will give you a new line. The project’s font is big and bold, whereas tasks and notes are of normal size. To identify what are tasks and what are notes, look for the bullet point – only tasks will have them. Once you’ve typed in what you want, tapping return will give you a new line with an indent. To indent further, tap space once. Likewise, to remove an indent, tap delete once. From hereon, you roll as your brain moves. There are no limitations to a thought or idea, because no matter how correlated (or not) it is to another idea, there always be a place for it.

Whenever you are inside a list, there are a number of features to make use of. Firstly, an internal search that allows you search within that specific list. Along the bottom menu bar, the icon at the far left allows you to jump to a specific project within that list. The @ icon allows you to streamline search results with certain tags. For example, @done would filter your entire list down to only lines that have been marked as @done. The magnifying glass acts as an ability to search also, in case you’ve scrolled down and can no longer see the search bar up at the top of the screen. Finally, the far right icon is an options category that allows you move selected lines to a different project, cut/copy/paste and a number of other minor features. For a full list, see the screenshots attached.

Tip: for a faster way to move single lines, tap and hold them. They’ll turn into a single blue line with a circle on the left hand side, and from there you can just move it to wherever you want to. To edit what is written on a line, double tap.

The home screen of TaskPaper is relatively streamlined. The top left button opens up to provide options to: sync, lock and unlock orientation (a welcome addition for iPhone 3G users), start Wi-Fi sharing and adjust settings. There’s a help guide in there too. By heading over to www.simpletext.ws you can log in with your Google ID and see all of your lists. You can also create lists here too. Note: the developer stresses that security is light for online syncing – most evident by the fact that the login page is not HTTP secure (https). Thankfully, the code is fully open-source, meaning you can load it onto your own website. See here for more details.

Additionally, there is a local network sync option. TaskPaper will give you an IP which you can connect through any web browser, and all your documents will be there for viewing and editing. The only downside is that there is no export option, meaning you’ll have to manually copy and paste it onto your desktop if you want an offline copy on your PC or Mac.

The settings menu reveals a number of additional options. There are six different ways to sort documents (see screenshots for a full list); you can add a start-up password for security and you can write down the tags you use frequently so that it’s just a matter of taps to insert a tag, rather than to type it out manually.

The application is universal, meaning it is optimized for the iPad as well as the iPhone. Like other productivity applications, the iPad’s larger screen makes projects and note-making significantly easier.

The interface for the iPad features two fixed, scrollable columns when viewed in landscape mode. On the left, a summary list of all the documents you’ve created and on the right are the documents themselves. On portrait mode the design is a little more intuitive, with a list of documents presented in the centre of the screen in a somewhat-transparent box (allowing you to see content written behind it). Disappointingly, there is still no way to search in all the documents, rather you can only search each individual one.

So where does it fall short? Well, the option to collapse a project is a missing – a feature that could both simplify and streamline lists even further. The keyboard often gets in the way of editing a list – I found that whenever I went to edit a line at the bottom of the screen it would select a different line whenever the keyboard popped up. Lastly, an option for a dark theme wouldn’t go amiss.

TaskPaper really does follow’s Apple’s motto of Think Different. The application is so open yet feels easy and comfortable to use, especially for big ideas. It’s a drawing board for every thought in your head. It’s unconventional, imaginative and streamlined. And that’s impressive.

SimpleNote Review

SimpleNote Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Codality, Inc.
Price: FREE
Version: 2.62

Design Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Features Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Integration Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.33 out of 5 stars

SimpleNote is a minimalist, straightforward and synchronized notes application that simplifies the note making process. This is, in fact, a euphemism. The note making process is as simple as Apple’s Notes application, but offers the feature of online syncing. For free. It is ad-supported with the ability to buy a premium twelve month subscription.

On the home screen there is little to distract you from content. There are only two buttons – options and add a new note, along with a search bar. The options list contains a plethora of minor features, including: the ability to change the sort order of notes (modified, created or alphabetical); preview lines (anywhere from zero to five) and orientation lock. The latter function is a welcome addition to iPhone 3G users who do not have the ability to use iOS4’s orientation lock feature.

The major advantage of SimpleNote is its ability to sync online. Syncing works both ways – meaning you can create a note online and it’ll update on your iDevice, as well as vice versa. Creating an account is free and simple – like the application itself.

Within the application, you can buy twelve months premium access for $8.99. This offers a number of additional features, including: the ability to disable ads; automatic backups rather than manual syncing; and the ability to create personal RSS feed for your notes. For a full list of features, see the screenshots attached below.

Is SimpleNote too simple? You can’t format text, create lists or do just about anything else that other clients offer. Its greatest short-term advantage is, perhaps, its greatest long-term flaw if you need even just a little bit of customization. On the other hand, if text is the focal point of your notes, you can’t get much simpler than SimpleNote.

Acme Lists Review

Acme Lists Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I’ve reviewed quite a few list apps since starting with 148Apps. It hasn’t been on purpose, by any means. I don’t even make many lists. I just seem to gravitate towards these kinds of apps for some reason. I’ve made the statement before in reviews that if I would be using a list app, it would be this app, or that app. Yet, here I am, not using a list app at all.

That was before I realized the greatness of Acme Lists. The greatness I speak of isn’t in the bells and whistles, the time stamping and organizing of data, the categorizing of lists by importance, type, smell, sound… etc that other similar apps flaunt as their selling point. The greatness of Acme Lists is in the simplistic design and ease of use, the quick input of lists and the quick deletion of finished objectives. No tracking, no breakdowns, no graphs, just pure list making bliss.

The interface for Acme lists is fairly straight forward. Three tabs along the bottom of the screen separate out the list making, the settings page, and a comprehensive help page. With one click on the list page, a list can be viewed, added to, or deleted. With another click entire new lists can be created. Picked up those diapers at the corner store? You can delete the item all together or simply red line it through until the next shopping list, where it becomes necessary again.

Acme Lists isn’t without its own arsenal of bells and whistles though. A web server allows for remote editing of lists through a PC as long as both devices are on the same wi-fi connection. So your wife can upload your daily honeydo list before you ever wake up in the morning. Once you check the app, you’ll have a brand spanking new list of items to complete. Additionally, if your wife or husband has their own iDevice, the two devices can share lists over Bluetooth or wifi. So if you got the eggs and milk but he got the chicken and beef, your lists will be updated accordingly once connected.

The help page is extremely comprehensive, providing step by step instructions for each section, general information, and options to rate and share the app. If you’re looking for a simple yet useful list app, Acme Lists is a hard one to pass up. At $0.99, it’s a safe investment to see if it fits your needs. Now if you’ll excuse me, my shopping list needs completed.

Toogo iPhone App Review

Toogo

Version 1.1

Toogo iPhone App Review 1 Toogo iPhone App Review

I have looked through many (many!) to do lists on the App Store, trying to find a one size fits all app for what I need. I don’t have a problem making my todo list .. I have a problem remembering to pull my list up when I’m near my errands!

Guess what .. there’s now an app for that! Enters Toogo. ..

Developed by Benjamin Nelson, this app is simple and straightforward, but super handy when it comes to reminding you of your daily errands. In a nutshell this app gives you the ability to create location – based to dos .. and then reminds you of your errands when you are near them. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

When you first open the application it defaults to the map screen, which looks similar to an application like Google Maps.

Toogo iPhone App Review 2 Toogo iPhone App Review

At the top you’ll see Settings, where you can change the map view and even enable the multi-tasking option for the application (when applicable on your device). At the bottom left you’ll see an icon that you will press to find your location (again on applicable devices). In the middle you can toggle between a Map View of your to dos, or a List View. At the bottom right hand side you’ll see the ‘+’ button, which is how you add a new location.

Toogo iPhone App Review 3 Toogo iPhone App Review

By default your map is empty aside from your current location marking. Pressing the ‘+’ button will take you to the screen where you can add new to do. It asks you for a Name (which will show up on either the list or the map), Location, and a location radius to which you should be notified (either 1/2, 1, 2, 5, or 10 miles).

By clicking the Location button it will default to your current location (if known), however you can either type in an address at the top or you can simply drag the little pin to the location you want it to be at.

(***NOTE .. this part appears to only work when multi-tasking is ENABLED on an iPhone that supports it***)  Now comes the fun part. After giving your to do a name, location, and notification radius it is added to your list. When you are driving along and move within your specified radius a popup will appear and remind you of your errand. How handy is that?!?!

My only concern with this app is that it may be battery draining, since it appears to leave the GPS option on your phone active the entire time, through multi-tasking. However I have not used it long enough to confirm or deny this… but I can note a swifter decrease in battery usage and my phone, when not is use, feels warmer than it did before using this app.

If you have a device that can fully support the ability of this app I’d suggest heading over to the App Store now and grabbing your copy at the bargain price of $0.99. While I am thinking it may use a little more battery than your phone sitting idle it may be a minimal tradeoff to how handy this app can be for your every day errands.

If you’re interested in checking out a demo video, made by the developer, head on over to his website.

Enjoy!

HoneyDo is the App Store’s first ever shareable to-do app, and even nick-named the “marriage saver app”. HoneyDo was featured by Huffington Post in their review of best apps for couples and was voted #1 in the list of 9 apps that they featured. All the other to-do apps are for one person. Honeydo is a constantly updating task list that lets you coordinate shared responsibilities.

HoneyDo was built to help primarily with joint domestic tasks that tend to create so much friction. From grocery lists to planning trips to paying bills to scheduling kids appointments/activities – Honeydo keeps your family in sync. It even offers fun, virtual “gifts” to motivate your collaborator and keep things light. Honeydo lets you create lists of tasks and subtasks. You can assign them to one member of your group or leave them open for anyone in the group to do. However you use it, Honeydo helps couples and families navigate the blurred lines of authority that characterize 21st century households.

HoneyDo comes with an integrated real-time chat engine which allows you to send sms-like notes directly to your family members and HoneyDo group members for free and save on SMS plans. All tasks can be accepted, marked as done or rejected by members of the Group and the app fosters communication between its users using a delightful user interface that is clean and engaging.

Appigo Todo, one of our favorite iPhone todo applications has been released for the iPad. This version supports all of the great functionality of the iPhone version with an enhanced display to take advantage of the extra screen area.

Appigo Todo for the iPad includes the great syncing functionality of the iPhone version. Meaning that you can keep your iPad, iPhone, and desktop all in sync. Fantastic feature. Looks like Appigo have decided to go with the familiar datebook design for the app. While it’s something that is familiar to many, and certainly something that matches with Apple’s own Calendar app, I hope to see more advanced view options in the future. Possibly a power users view.

As it is now, Appigo Todo is a fantastically functional todo / GTD app and the best one available for the iPad by a mile. The added benefit of being able to keep iPhone, iPad, and desktop in sync is icing on the cake.

Appigo Todo for the iPad is available on the App Store now at an introductory price of $4.99.

mzl_wovdiykf_320x480-75TapDo has a lot of potential as a well designed task manager that provides quick entry and easy to use input. There are a significant number of issues that need to be addressed before it can really stand out as a task management app though.

TapDo provides a fairly steep learning curve for adjusting options, but pre-programmed entries provide a good tool to use as an example. To effectively use TapDo, users must take the time to really cater the settings to fit their lifestyle. I found the examples provided to really fail to meet any part of my planning needs. Once programmed though, TapDo was much more usable overall. Programming the app is an extensive undertaking though.

To further complicate the situation, there is no easy method to add custom tasks without added effort. Rather then just allow for individual inputs for each task, users must customize categories for the task to fit inside. This adds to the difficulty for users to interact with this app right out of the box.

One of the nice features of this task oriented app is the searching and sorting features. Daily, already completed, and overdue items can all be searched, and entries can be sorted by date, priority, or group. New entries, once the app is fully customized, can be completed in no time at all.

Overall I would say that this app is an OK first shot, but automatic date input, an easier customizable interface, and more detailed examples would provide users with some much needed enhancements. I’ve not really found a task manager that will really fit my needs quite yet, and as we get closer to the new addition in the family, it’s becoming more and more something I am looking into. In it’s current iteration, TapDo isn’t that app, but I have hope that it has the capability to step up with a little attention.

The only list app I’m keeping (5 of 5)
by Cloudcastles (United States)

I love this list app so much I want to put it on my home screen. But I hate the icon, so it has to go on my second screen. Good as it already is, this app would be better if we could add a to-do list to a specific date, and also have the option of sorting lists according to the dates. A search function might be a useful addition too.

WONDERFUL! (5 of 5)
by Mac100 (United States)

This is a fantastic app! I was a little afraid to upgrade because I liked it so much before, but the upgrades age great. I love how you can ’scratch’ items off so easily and then unscratch them off so easily. I have several lists, but I have one list I use over and over each day. This program is WONDERFUL and easy to use. The new options are great and I’m anxious to send a list to another ipod owner who I will encourage to get this program. The only suggestion I have would be to add some little notation of some kind so that if your list exceeds the viewable area, you will be reminded that there is more to view. Thank you for this great app!

Very useful (5 of 5)
by Itub (Australia)

The web server is the best feature. Desktop keyboards are faster than iphone. And a list of items is just one block of text.

When you first open the app it might seem a bit overwhelming because your task list is already completely filled, but that is because each task is explaining another feature of the app. I was very impressed by the fact that everything about the app is easily and quickly explained so that anyone can pick it up and know how to use all the available features.D2 200x300 Dunnit! iPhone App Review

I was also very impressed with the options you have for every one of your tasks. You can put normal or urgent, give a due date and time, set it to repeat and even tag it. The tag allows you to organize your tasks into separate groups like work, school, and home, or however you would like. It is nice to have the extra way to look at your apps.

On the main screen the app automatically groups your apps by due date groups so that you can easily see the things you need to focus on immediately and the things that you need to focus on in the coming days and weeks.

But even beyond the ease of use, and extra features such as the ability to view your task history and import your own ToDo list from your computer, this app boasts one extra feature that really makes it stand out.

DD3 200x300 Dunnit! iPhone App ReviewFor those of you that use OpenFeint, this app rises heads and tails above the crowd because it allows you to earn achievements and points just from getting your tasks done. So it really encourages you to get things done on time and even ahead of schedule so that you can rack up those points and move up the leader board. In effect it turns boring, mundane tasks into a sort of game, making me think that Mary Poppins has been putting her hands on this iPhone app. (In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun!)

The price tag on this app might put some of you off because it is a bit high for a To Do List app but anything that gives you the motivation you need to get the laundry done or to do your homework on time, is something that is definitely worth the cost.

? Display statistic datas for the activities and the time period you wish in the form of:

- numbers (cumulated time, percentage, average time per day).
- charts like stock curves.
- piecharts.

WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES CAN I MONITOR?

Solution: Create the following activities: management, strategy, marketing, finance, technique, meeting, etc…

You’ll be surprised to see that the way you use your time when stopwatching is not what you ideally imagined.

? Do you want to do more sport?

Solution: Why don’t you create a sports category in which you enter your favourite sports: tennis, fitness, football, jogging, yoga, dancing, etc…

? Are you a consultant /an independent worker?

Solution: Create an activity for each project or for each customer, you’ll get a better idea of the time spent and adapt resources you allocate to them.

? Do you think you don’t sleep enough or that you spend too much time in transportation?
