Upcoming Tower Defense ‘Star Wars: The Battle of Hoth’ Gameplay Video Revealed

Upcoming Tower Defense ‘Star Wars: The Battle of Hoth’ Gameplay Video Revealed is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Scheduled for release on the 15th of this month for $2.99, Star Wars: The Battle of Hoth is a tower defense game set in the Star Wars universe where players defend against the Imperial forces while on the ice planet Hoth. Straight out of Empire Strikes Back, the game includes all kinds of units that will be instantly familiar to Star Wars fans from the massive AT-AT to Rebel Snowspeeders.

Gameplay looks fairly standard for a tower defense game, and aside from all kinds of Star Wars units, it also sports some cut scenes from the movie. Needless to say, as a huge closet Star Wars nerd, I cannot wait for this game to get released.

New on iPad: Crystal Defenders, Samurai: Way of the Warrior is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Two more iPhone standouts have been upgraded and rereleased for the iPad. Owners of Apple’s tablet device may now enjoy native versions of Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders ($7.99) and Madfinger’s Samurai: Way of the Warrior ($4.99).

Crystal Defenders is a Final Fantasy Tactics-themed tower defense title in which players must deploy an army of soldiers, archers, mages, and other specialized character types to ward off waves of attacking enemies.

The iPad version of Crystal Defenders features redrawn graphics to fill the iPad’s full 1024×768 resolution, and boasts most precise controls thanks to the bigger screen size.

Samurai: Way of the Warrior prides itself as being “developed specifically to leverage the iPad touch screen.” The game is controlled entirely through touch screen gestures, with taps and swipes initiating character movement and combat maneuvers.

Samurai: Way of the Warrior HD features an iPad-exclusive “Deadly Dojo” mode, along with online leaderboards, friends lists, and Twitter and Facebook integration.

Star Wars: Battle of Hoth to Land July 15th

Star Wars: Battle of Hoth to Land July 15th is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

A few weeks ago we brought you news of Star Wars: Battle of Hoth, a new Star Wars game hitting the iPhone. Star Wars: Battle of Hoth is a tower defense type game set in the Star Wars universe. Specifically it’s set in the Hoth battle sequence from the Empire Strikes Back. Possibly the best scene in the best Star Wars movie, ever.

We get word today that the game will be hitting the App Store in just 2 weeks for the very reasonable price of $2.99.

Under development for the past few months by Fluffylogic, a development house based in Bristol in the UK, the game will be released on the App Store by THQ. I personally am looking forward to this one. A tower defense game set during the Empire Strikes Back? What’s not to love?

Zombie Wonderland Review

Zombie Wonderland Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Another day, another zombie game in the App Store! This time it’s from Chillingo, and the title is Zombie Wonderland. With this game, Chillingo has attempted to blend some of the humor, action, and aesthetic of their popular Minigore with elements of task management and tower defense games. The result is as mixed a bag as the genres it borrows from, although it ultimately succeeds more than it fails.

In Zombie Wonderland, you play Chuck, a handyman for hire in a town suffering from a chronic zombie pandemic. Your job is twofold: stop the zombies from invading the premesis, and keep the place clean. If you do bit these things by sunup, you survive to work another nigh in one of four locales: a home, a bar, a garage, and a cemetery’s office.

The basic gameplay works fine. Each location has a number windows which you must defend. You can shore up windows with wooden boards (the zombies never go for the door) and defend the building with both your trusty shotgun and a single automatic machine gun. There are also chores to do, the main one being to clean up the zombie guts before the night ends. It’s a real mélange of ideas, and it much of it can be fun in little bursts. You’ll spend most of you time tap-mashing around the house, running from window to window and shooting what you see. Each night goes by so quickly that you won’t tire out before the cock crows and day comes.

Unfortunately, Zombie Wonderland suffers from that game-killing combo of brevity and repetitiveness. It is a short game; there are twenty levels across four locations, and although you’ll be playing some of those levels repeatedly (the last half of the game really spikes in difficulty), that doesn’t make up for the fact that there’s just not a whole lot of variety here. Each board is basically the same, and each level on each board is basically the same. You’re just doing the same thing, over and over, level after level: shoot zombies, board up windows, clean up guts, rinse and repeat. And you’ll be shooting the same limited zombie types over and over, too, with the same limited selection of weapons.

As I played, I could see where Zombie Wonderland drew inspiration from other, better zombie games, like Plants vs. Zombies and Zombie Smash, but both of those titles benefited from a huge variety of weapons, enemies, and challenges.

I want to give Zombie Wonderland a better recommendation. It’s got a fun idea at it’s heart, and I like the graphical look of it. But in the end, it lacks imagination in variety and level design. As such, my recommendation is tepid, although zombie fans and Minigore fans will undoubtedly get some enjoyment out of it.

Mikado Defenders Review

Mikado Defenders Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Without a doubt, tower defense games, particularly difficult tower defense games, are my favorite games on the iPhone. They typically require a great deal of strategy to complete, and because of that, have a great payoff at the end. There’s nothing quite like beating something after you feel like you have worked fairly hard for it.

Mikado Defenders takes this whole idea of “difficult tower defense” one step further, creating a nearly impossible challenge for you to wrap your head around. The game is a slightly new twist on the fixed position tower defense genre, letting you build army battalions in plots instead of towers. Each unit can be upgraded 3 times, and then three more times as an “elite” soldier. For example, the fourth upgrade of the archer is the fire archer, and so on. Your mission is to defend you home base, which is protected by a wall that you can also upgrade to either be stronger or even fire weapons.

Once you start, the enemies come at you in waves that are significantly “Japanified”. Instead of just coming at you, you get a crazy graphic novel style splash screen declaring what is going to be coming at you. For the most part, the enemies are pretty well balanced in their attack, requiring a great deal of strategy to fend them off… until you get attacked by the Bull Demons. The Bull Demons don’t really mind any of your pesky defenders, they just kill everything. As a result, you must resort to your elemental tower, which is really just a super weapon that you get when your troops prove to be worthless.

At the beginning of the game, you choose between four different elements, one that shoots lightning, one that shoots fire, one that slows all your enemies, and one that makes your troops temporarily invincible. These elementals charge through what I’ve gathered to be the souls of the enemies. The trick is to really save these attacks for when you really really need them.

Even with these attacks, Mikado Defenders is definitely one of the most difficult tower defense games out there. Beating the first level in itself is a chore, even on easy mode. With a few levels at your disposal and 3 difficulty levels to play through, you should have more than enough game to play, as long as you don’t delete it out of frustration. The graphics are pretty nice and the game seems well made, so if you are up to a ridiculously difficult challenge, Mikado Defenders may be for you.

For iPad: ‘Ace Tennis 2010 Online’ and ‘TowerMadness HD’

For iPad: ‘Ace Tennis 2010 Online’ and ‘TowerMadness HD’ is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Ace Tennis 2010 Online

Eurocenter's newest release, Ace Tennis 2010 Online [App Store] is self-described as "the first real tennis game on the iPad."

An iPad adaptation of Eurocenter's early iPhone release, Ace Tennis Online [App Store], Ace Tennis 2010 Online is an over-the-shoulder tennis title that features three different court types (grass, sand, and indoor) and matches against computer AI as well as online players from around the world.

The game features region tap controls (you control where your player runs on the court, but the swing is automatic) with tilt influencing volley direction. The iPad version features enhanced graphics that take advantage of the device's large screen and features gameplay similar to the original iPhone version, which saw a successful run in the App Store in its day.

I'm far more accustomed to triggering the swing as the main play dynamic in most tennis titles– so the gameplay felt strange to me.

The biggest feature of the game like its 2009 iPhone counterpart is online multiplayer play. Eurocenter is well known for their online multiplayer features across many of their games.

As the game just recently landed in the App Store, we haven't been able to really test the multiplayer functionality. Eurocenter is planning on launching the iPhone version of Ace Tennis 2010 in the coming few weeks which should expand the player pool.

TowerMadness HD

Limbic Software has just released the HD version of TowerMadness.

TowerMadness HD is an open-field or fixed-path tower defense game where you can create your own path to defend off the enemies (Aliens) from reaching your base (herd of sheep). The game has full 3D graphics with pinch-to-zoom capabilities to view the game from any angle, all the way down to first-person viewing of the action.

One of the most intriguing new features coming to the HD version is the split-screen multiplayer mode. The way it works is that each player is controlling different games, but they are fighting the same linked waves of aliens, allowing each player to have their own strategy. Sending waves in early will result in both you and your opponent having to fend off the incoming aliens. So if your confident in your defenses, you can overload your opponent with waves and win, but this could also result in your own demise if your not careful. There are also new multiplayer specific features, like 'Panic Your Opponent', where you can accelerate the aliens on your opponents side for a little while to hopefully get past their defenses. Another one is a new character called 'Robosteal', who will travel down your opponents path and steal a sheep if he reaches them, and give it to you.

If you haven't tried it before, a free version of the iPhone game called TowerMadness Zero remains available to download.

Pew Pew Land ($0.99)

Version – 1.50

Review – “Fast paced fun for all ages!”

Pew Pew Land 1 200x300 Pew Pew Land iPhone App ReviewThere have been tons of tower defense games released into the App Store. It just really is a genre of gaming that fits wonderfully into a touch screen format! Pew Pew Land is not just another generic game though, it has it’s own unique style! It uses both cartoony graphics and an extremely easy control scheme to appeal to all ages!

When you open up Pew Pew Land you’re immediately transported to a new world. The music and graphics are very well done, and very much add to the cartoony feel of this app. This isPew Pew Land 2 200x300 Pew Pew Land iPhone App Review one of things that truly makes this app fun for all ages. It doesn’t have a violent-feeling theme, it relies more on humor and creativity!

The main menu offers several different play options. There is an arcade mode and an endless mode for both 1 and 2 players using a bluetooth connection between 2 devices. Below the gameplay modes you’ll see a few more options that will tell you more about the game, allow you to check out your OpenFeint account and an “Options” button that is in the bottom right corner of the screen.

When you open up Pew Pew Land for the first time you’ll be asked to either create an account on the OpenFeint network or link up to your account if you already have one. Connecting to OpenFeint adds a lot to the game. It Pew Pew Land 31 200x300 Pew Pew Land iPhone App Reviewallows you to not only keep track of your high scores and compare them to your friends, but you can also get Achievements to show off as well!

Multiplayer in this game runs smoothly and has the potential to be a lot of fun. Why do I say it just has potential? Because most of the levels are far too easy in multiplayer. The basic concept of multiplayer is that you both are given half of the map to protect. You each gain points and money individually, and are allowed to share money to help build each other’s defenses.

I found that the arcade mode for multiplayer is kind of fun, but most of the levels are just too easy in endless mode. I literally played hundreds of levels with my wife. Once we reached about wave 80 or so our defenses were built up to the point that we really didn’t Pew Pew Land 41 200x300 Pew Pew Land iPhone App Reviewhave to do anything at all to stop the waves. A lot of this is likely because the difficult increases at the same rate as the single player game, but you are able to increase your defenses much more quickly because there are two of you.

So with all of that said, this would be a great game for younger kids, and in single player mode it can offer at least a little bit of a challenge to anyone. For just $0.99 it can be a great diversion though, and it does offer lots of levels and a variety of different strategies, due to all of the different enemies and defense units available. If you’re still not sure that this is a game you’d be interested in, but you’d like to see it in action I’d encourage you to download the Lite version and check it out for yourself. So what are you waiting for? Check it out in the App Store today!

Bio Army ($1.99)

Version – 1.0

Review – “Extremely addicting tower defense game!”

Bio Army 1 300x200 Bio Army iPhone App ReviewIf you enjoy fast-paced games of strategy, there’s a good chance that Bio Army will quickly become one of you favorite apps! From the well polished cartoon graphic, to the variety of enemies, maps and weapons, this tower defense has everything it needs to keep you glued to your iDevice playing for hours!

Just in case you’re not already familiar with tower defense games. The basic concept is that you will be trying to stop “waves” of Bio Army 2 300x200 Bio Army iPhone App Reviewenemies from reaching their goal, which in this case is your fort. The way you stop the enemies is by placing mercenaries around the path that they take to your fort. The mercenaries each have different skills such as firing speed, range and power.

When you first start the game you only have one map available, and two mercenaries. With each level you complete you unlock new levels, mercenaries, abilities, and even buildings that will help you raise more money and increase your abilities for defense! What gives this Bio Army 3 300x200 Bio Army iPhone App Reviewgame it’s addicting nature is that as you upgrade things by finishing levels, you get the urge to go back and play older levels to see how high you can score!

Getting started is simple. When you open the game you’ll be taken to the menu after a brief splash screen. There is an options menu where you can toggle on/off the music and sound effects. There are also instructions, the game itself explains things as you go along pretty well and so if you’re familiar with tower defense games I would recommend that you just jump right in!

Once you touch the “Start Game” button you’ll be taken to a list of available levels. Selecting a level will bring up the available modes of play for that level. For each level there are 5 different play modes, but you have to unlock these modes for each level individually. You unlock them in the order they are listed from top to bottom.

The different game modes add another element of replay value to the game. They change things just Bio Army 4 300x200 Bio Army iPhone App Reviewenough to force you to adjust your strategies! The game modes available for each level are: Normal, Sudden Death, Road Runners, Thick Hide, and Endurance! Personally my favorite is the Endurance game, which is basically a game that never ends until you are finally overrun and you lose!

One of the things that I really have noticed in the past is that tower defense games on my iPhone tend to eat through battery really fast. This is most likely due to the fact that there are so many things going on as you get further into them. With that said, I have not had any problems at all Bio Army 5 300x200 Bio Army iPhone App Reviewwith this game draining my battery. In fact, I checked several times and was quite shocked at how well my battery held up while playing this game!

While I could go on and on about all the different features and things that I noticed in this app, but just let me say this. Bio Army is one of the most fun and addicting games that I have played on the iPhone OS platform in a long time!  The only thing I really noticed that I’d like to see added is some kind of global high score lists.  With that said, especially if you like tower defense games, I think you’ll find that this one is both easy to learn, difficult to master.  And as an added bonus, it’s also much easier on your battery life than most tower defense games! So if you’re still reading this, what are you waiting for? Head to the App Store and check out Bio Army today!

Monster Mayhem Review

Monster Mayhem Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Chillingo, Ltd.
Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.38 out of 5 stars

It only took me one Castle Defense game to achieve burnout and never desire to play one again. Frantically tossing wave-after-wave of enemies into the air was fun at first, but in the end, I came to the realization that these types of games generally lack depth and only reward you with a lifetime of flicking-induced arthritic pain. Such is not the case with Monster Mayhem.

Monster Mayhem approaches the Castle Defense genre differently and is best described as a Tower Offense game. Instead of focusing their development on increasing enemies wave after wave, Taplay focused on gameplay mechanics, a diverse stable of unique monsters and a well-equipped arsenal of upgradeable weaponry which gives your fingers/hands some much-needed R and R. Not only does this strategy work very well, it innovates the entire genre and alters the course of future evolution so our children’s children aren’t born with Popeye forearms.

The story behind Monster Mayhem is simple: You, the Mystery Graveyard keeper, must stop the ensuing waves of Monster Mayhem from breaking down the grave-yard’s great iron gate. To accomplish your mission, you’re provided with a couple of weapons initially, but as you progress and earn points/coins, additional weapons appear, all of which are upgradeable.

The only weapon requiring players to use extended touch gestures is the knife which, again, is upgradeable. Players simply swipe over enemies to damage/kill them using the knife. The other weapons only require touching the screen and obliterating monster after monster. Players simply choose a weapon from their arsenal, located at the top of the screen, and go to town grave-yard. This is where Monster Mayhem really shines: In addition to offering depth, beautiful graphics and sounds, it enhances/innovates and provides a very enjoyable game play experience by keeping all the mindless flicking nonsense to a bare minimum, offering instead to allow players to blow their enemies to smithereens using cool weaponry.

As new enemies appear, players are provided with their personal attribute information. Enemies can move quickly and possess little strength (to damage the gate) or move slowly and wreak holy havoc on that iron once they finally make it there and range from werewolves that change to puppies after you kill them, to giant FrankenKens, to spiders that dangle from above and slowly rob you of your hard-earned coinage. And, speaking of coinage, players can replay any previously-beaten level over and again, if desired, to build up enough money to buy/upgrade weapons.

Monster Mayhem contains a built-in enemy reference, which shows each enemy’s attribute card and the number of each enemy you’ve killed, once they’re unlocked, an on-screen help tutorial and Crystal social network features including online leaderboards, achievements and the option to challenge your friends to some Monster Mayhem.

All said, Monster Mayhem is beautiful, fun and innovative. Defending your gate simply using one finger and a variety of weapons, against an even larger variety of monsters/enemies is a rewarding, satisfying experience. At only $1.99, this game is definitely worth its purchase price.
