As I’ve found with most apps pertaining to travel, be it hotel bookings, flight info or subway and bus times, ToucHotel is useful up to a point.

Designed by UserFans, this app focuses, as the name suggests, on hotels only. When you open the app, you’ll begin typing the name of the city you’re staying in into the search field, then choose the matching city from the list the app generates. One issue: The app names cities and countries, but not states, which is a problem if the city you’re staying in is not the only one in the world with that name.

After choosing the city, you use a scroll wheel to pick your dates and the number of nights you’ll need. ToucHotel generates a list of hotels with available rooms. You can tap “Options” at the bottom to have them listed in order by popularity, star ratings, price, name, guest scores or their distance from the city center. Another option is to tap the map button in the top right corner to see them marked as pinpoints in the city.

Once you select a hotel, you’re provided with a good amount of info; the rooms and prices available, hotel amenities, photos of the hotel, a map, the address and a way to easily share the hotel info via email or Facebook. Tap on a room to book it, then enter your credit card information, which is encrypted.

I’d say for bigger cities this is one free app that could help you find a room, while for smaller cities (or cities with common names) you might be better sticking with Google.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Review – “Find and book hotel rooms from your phone!”

Do you travel a lot? If so you’d probably be happy to have an easy way to book hotel rooms without talking to a hotel representative! ToucHotel uses an extremely basic search feature to quickly connect you with hotels in the area that you’ll be staying in!

When you open up ToucHotel you’ll see a search bar at the top of the screen. Below that search bar is a list of all of your recent searches if you have any yet. To find a hotel in your area all you have to do is type the name of the city in the search bar at the top of the screen. Once you do a list of matching results will show up below, and all you have to do is touch one of them to view all of the hotels in that city!

When you touch a city to search inside you’ll be taken to a screen with two scroll-wheels. You can use these to select what day you’ll be arriving and how many days you plan on staying. Once you have it all set up just touch the “Search Hotels” button at the bottom of the screen.

One thing that I noticed pretty quickly with this app is that there is no way to specify what state you are searching for a city in. For example; there are 39 “Springfield”’s in the United States, but if you search for Springfield you’ll only be shown results for one of them.

With that said, if you do find a hotel that you’re interested in the city you’re aiming for all you have to do is touch it to bring up a screen full of information on it. At the top of this screen is a picture (which you can click on to see more), the name of the hotel, the Hotel’s rating, and four buttons to access info about the hotel, a map of where it is, photos and to share information on the hotel with someone!

At the bottom of every hotel screen you’ll see a list of room types that are available with their current price. Touching any of them will bring up a confirmation screen that will tell you everything about the room and offer a link to a page where you can actually book the room! All you’ll have to do is enter a name and a credit/debit card to reserve the room, so do that and then touch the “Book now” button at the bottom of the screen.

My overall impressions of this app were that it is very easy to pick up and use quickly. However, if you have difficulty locating the right hotel(s) in the right cities there is not really any way to do an “advanced search.” You’ll just have to scroll through the results until you can find what you’re looking for!

All things said, the app is free, and does do what it claims to do! If you’ve been looking for the easiest/quickest way to book a room this may be what you’re looking for. If; however, you’re looking for an extremely powerful tool to locate and compare hotel rooms worldwide you may want to check out ToucHotel for free in the App Store today!

I’ve been on a cruise once in my life. The comedy of errors associated with that vacation is a topic for a personal blog post, but the cruise itself was exciting and awe-inspiring. The sheer size of the ship; the constant flow of food, drink, and frolic; and the bizarre juxtaposition of being isolated at sea in a self-contained floating city are exciting and not to be missed.

For those who take frequent cruises or are looking to take a cruise for the first time, the Cruise Finder app for your iDevice is an almost comprehensive database of cruise lines, vessels, departures, destinations, and itineraries. If you want to take a cruise, Cruise Finder bills itself as the app to use. I did not intend for that to rhyme.

Description

The app itself is basically a front-end for iCruise.com, which presumably contains all the data which powers the app. Starting it up you immediately see an offer to register for their newsletter, a link for hot cruise deals, and four quick search links. Scrolling down on that page gives you more options: destination and departure port calendars; cruise info like passport requirements, weather, and port directions; and iCruise links for their mailing address, customer service, and getting a cruise quote.

The data in the app is presented well and navigation is mostly intuitive. There is a huge amount of info on each ship, including staterooms, prices, and deck plans. The port information is useful and gives you information on parking and weather, so you can plan your arrival and departure accordingly. The departure calendar is especially fun to look at, showing the price for departures from your chosen port by month, so you can see at a glance what your home port offers.

If it looks like the Cons outweigh the Pros, it’s just because the app is overall a great searchable cruise database that has a few annoying interface issues. If you’re looking to go on a cruise soon then this app would be a great place to start.

With Dezzie’s Guide to Pinting in Dublin by Alex Grant, both tourists and citizens will find this comprehensive overview of Ireland’s beer culture, pub scene and general history an advantageous tool as they try to get in on all the fun.  Sure, many think the Irish are all drunks, but Dezzie’s Guide debunks that stereotype, outlining bits of history and the reasons why so many take to beer when in an Irish pub.  Created as a companion for those who want to soak up the experiences the beautiful city of Dublin has to offer, Dezzie’s Guide hopes to optimize the craic, which is Gaelic for fun, by telling you the best places to go for local banter and beer.

The Bars tab provides users with a list of popular pubs in which you may choose to enjoy said pints.  A review, the establishment’s address, their phone number and a map that pinpoints their location accompany each name.  The reviews are short but comprehensive, giving you a decent peek into the pub’s atmosphere to determine whether it will mesh well with your taste and personality.  The Tips tab fills you in on basic knowledge about Dublin that may prove rather helpful.  Users will learn about Trinity College, forms of transportation, sports, music, writers and so much more.
