Official Twitter App Updated for iPad Compatibility

Official Twitter App Updated for iPad Compatibility is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

When Twitter acquired Loren Brichter’s acclaimed Tweetie app and made it the official Twitter app on iPhone, it came with the promise that Twitter for iPad was in the works as well. Twitter has just updated Twitter for iPhone to version 3.1, bringing iPad support to the now universal app.

The first thing you notice about Twitter for iPad is that it feels very smooth and intuitive, much like how Loren Brichter’s other apps have felt. The app is far more complex than Twitter for iPhone, though. Swiping across a tweet no longer calls up the reply and favorite options, for example – it’s now used for moving tabs in and out of view, so you can hide or return to a specific user or tweet view that you called up. You can add multiple accounts, and can upload pictures and video, view your lists, and all the other features that have become standard to most Twitter apps, including Twitter for iPhone.

Links are opened in an ingenious way – when you click on a tweet with a link, it opens up a smaller web view of the link, so that you can view it without it taking up the whole screen, but you can expand it to the whole screen if you wish. If you want a quick view of a conversation between people, you can use 2 fingers to drag down from the tweet to open up a view of the last few tweets. Sadly, image hosting services do not open up in-line previews of the images in your stream, you have to click on the links to view the images. Profiles now show a list of 5 users who are considered ’similar’ to that user for you to also follow. Also, links to tweets do not open as a native view in the app, they open up the tweet in the mobile Twitter site.

Twitlonger support is implemented for standard tweets, but not for DMs. The miniature DM reply view also doesn’t show character count, and only lets you edit the DM by calling up the draft, by hitting the new tweet button. It’s very unintuitive, and something that needs to be fixed. There’s a lot of little tweaks that the app needs, as this is clearly a 1.0 release focused on the bigger picture than on minutiae, and there is a lot of complexity to this app that makes little things easy to miss. But, given the state of Twitter apps on the iPad, a Loren Brichter-developed app with a lot of intriguing and new interface features for free (can you say multiple account support?) is welcome. The app is sure to receive future updates as well, making it worth keeping an eye on for iPad-owning Twitter users.

IM+ Now Supports More Than You’ll Ever Need

IM+ Now Supports More Than You’ll Ever Need is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Journalists are prone to hyperbole, but this title is almost euphemistic. SHAPE Services, creator of the popular IM+ client, are continuing to roll out feature after feature for their mass-market social networking application.

IM+ current supports Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN / Live, AIM (Mac users think iChat), ICQ, MySpace, Facebook, Jabber, Twitter and Skype chat. Outside of the seemingly endless list of clients, the application also provides an equally long list of push notification options, including e-mail arrival notifications from popular clients such as Hotmail, Yahoo! and Google Mail.

In addition to the application being universally built for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, IM+ also features an in-built browser for those who don’t have the ability to multitask – a welcome addition for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch users who are unable to avail of Apple’s much-awaited feature.

The latest update – 4.3 – brings with it a number of new themes and wallpapers, high resolution graphics for iPhone 4 users and VoiceOver support, allowing for speech recognition to be enabled. This last feature will set users back 99c a month.

There’s no doubt that SHAPE Services developers are trying to appeal to everyone. From customizable sounds and animated emoticons to geo-location support and retina display graphics, IM+ is becoming the client of choice for social networking users. It remains one of the top grossing applications for Social Networking – not bad at all for a $9.99 application with almost 4 000 competitors. And to top it all off, there’s a free version too.

Review – “An interactive way to update your friends. Social Questions!”

spuzzle 1 200x300 Spuzzle Ask Social Questions iPhone App Review

A new way to send your updates to your friends, Spuzzle combines the fun of a puzzle into twitter and Facebook to create a sort of Trivia for your friends to solve.

We’ve all gotten used to reading our friends ‘Status Updates’ or Tweets, but now you can add the fun of quizzing your friends. Instead of just telling everyone what you’re doing, where you are, or how you’re feeling you can create a Social Question – send it out and have your friends guess the answer. Interactive Social Updates!

spuzzle 2 200x300 Spuzzle Ask Social Questions iPhone App Review

Step 1: Create your Question. This could obviously be done without Spuzzle “Guess where I am?” but is more fun when you can completely customize. While you could create any Question you want (under 100 characters), you can also choose from one of the preset questions included.

Next Step: Include Hints. Here you can add word clues, or picture clues. Include photos already saved on your iPhone, or take a new one.

spuzzle 4 200x300 Spuzzle Ask Social Questions iPhone App Review

Step 3 is to send out your Spuzzle. You can notify your friends that you have a new Spuzzle via Email, Facebook and Twitter. You’ll send out your status update for your friends to go to your ‘Spuzzle’ (which will be on Spuzzle.com to answer.

While you will need a Spuzzle account (Free) to create and send your Social Questions, also, if you post via Twitter or Facebook your friends will also need to provide Spuzzle with their email addresses in order to answer the question.

I think this is a fantastic concept. While obviously I could just tweet/update a photo and question, this integrates great within my phone, and is a pretty fun alternate to a twitter client. Having to go through all of the extra registration is a bit of a chore, but only needs to be done once.

Luckily, the App is totally free. So you can test it out, and see if you’ll like the extra interactiveness of sending out Spuzzles instead of regular status updates. Go ahead and grab it from the link below!

Flipboard Review

Flipboard Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: FLIPBOARD, INC.

iPad Integration Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.08 out of 5 stars

Here’s the idea: make an app that pulls content from popular social networks and formats into a slick, ‘zine inspired interface. It’s a simple idea. But is it practical? Flipboard certainly thinks so, and they’ve invested quite a bit of design and promotion into it. The result is a social networking ‘zine that is good-looking and easy to browse, but still awaiting some more advanced features.

Flipboard works like this: connect the app to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Select up to seven other Twitter feeds or lists that you want to treat as “news,” then browse them via an interface that looks less like Twitteriffic and more like Newsweek. In other words, turn your Facebook friends into something cooler! The appeal is not the content, but the presentation. At a basic level, it is just another feed reader; the big selling point is the interface–the way you read your feeds.

And on that level, boy does Flipboard make my Facebook friends look good. Mimicking the look of slick modern ‘zine, Flipboard really turns mundane links and albums of Little League photos into very appealing things. The very posts that you might gloss over as you browse your friends status updates become front-and-center eye-catchers here, complete with headlines and graphics. It does all this through a responsive and intuitive touch control that lets you flip pages just like a book. Everything moves smoothly, and I did not detect any real glitches in the interface. It’s really well done and a treat to use.

Having said that, I also have to say this: right now, Flipboard feels more like a novelty than a killer app. It doesn’t mine the social networks popular links, doesn’t follow hashtags or trending topics, doesn’t allow you to make new status updates or create new tweets within the app. It’s great at what it does, but what is does is limited.

In the case of Flipboard, though, I am willing to temper my judgment of these limitations and put some faith in the future. This is not a small developer firing off their first app, but instead a major venture by a group with a lot of capital behind it. And the developers are promising that more dynamic feed sorting and other features are in the pipeline, as users begin to fuel and shape Flipboard content. If they realize the apps full potential, then it will be a beautiful thing.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one small but important issue here. Flipbook, for all its slickness, apparently wasn’t ready to handle the level of early interest it has generated. After dealing with Facebook lockouts in the first launch days, they’ve initiated an invite system, which means you may have to wait a couple days before you can make use of the apps primary selling point. And that sucks, just a bit, though it’s certainly one of those things that won’t be a lingering issue once the hype dies down.

So, is Flipboard a novelty social network reader, or a new paradigm in popular media? The jury is still out. If the developers follow through on the potential the app holds, it will certainly rise above the status of eye-candy and become a singular way to consume your daily dose of social media. I, for one, can’t wait.
