Official Twitter App Updated for iPad Compatibility

Official Twitter App Updated for iPad Compatibility is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

When Twitter acquired Loren Brichter’s acclaimed Tweetie app and made it the official Twitter app on iPhone, it came with the promise that Twitter for iPad was in the works as well. Twitter has just updated Twitter for iPhone to version 3.1, bringing iPad support to the now universal app.

The first thing you notice about Twitter for iPad is that it feels very smooth and intuitive, much like how Loren Brichter’s other apps have felt. The app is far more complex than Twitter for iPhone, though. Swiping across a tweet no longer calls up the reply and favorite options, for example – it’s now used for moving tabs in and out of view, so you can hide or return to a specific user or tweet view that you called up. You can add multiple accounts, and can upload pictures and video, view your lists, and all the other features that have become standard to most Twitter apps, including Twitter for iPhone.

Links are opened in an ingenious way – when you click on a tweet with a link, it opens up a smaller web view of the link, so that you can view it without it taking up the whole screen, but you can expand it to the whole screen if you wish. If you want a quick view of a conversation between people, you can use 2 fingers to drag down from the tweet to open up a view of the last few tweets. Sadly, image hosting services do not open up in-line previews of the images in your stream, you have to click on the links to view the images. Profiles now show a list of 5 users who are considered ’similar’ to that user for you to also follow. Also, links to tweets do not open as a native view in the app, they open up the tweet in the mobile Twitter site.

Twitlonger support is implemented for standard tweets, but not for DMs. The miniature DM reply view also doesn’t show character count, and only lets you edit the DM by calling up the draft, by hitting the new tweet button. It’s very unintuitive, and something that needs to be fixed. There’s a lot of little tweaks that the app needs, as this is clearly a 1.0 release focused on the bigger picture than on minutiae, and there is a lot of complexity to this app that makes little things easy to miss. But, given the state of Twitter apps on the iPad, a Loren Brichter-developed app with a lot of intriguing and new interface features for free (can you say multiple account support?) is welcome. The app is sure to receive future updates as well, making it worth keeping an eye on for iPad-owning Twitter users.

Gravity Hook HD Review

Gravity Hook HD Review is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

Developer: Semi Secret Software
Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad, iPhone 3G

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

Gravity Hook HD is a sequel to Semi Secret Software’s (developers of Canabalt) first Flash game, Gravity Hook, ported to iOS.

There are two things to realize about this game: one, it is a game of inertia and velocity. Your goal is to ascend as high as possible by latching on to objects hanging in midair, and pulling yourself towards them. You can’t latch on to objects that are too far away lest you lose your velocity, and then you’ll either need to recover by latching onto closer objects lest you fall off the bottom of the screen. Early on, the objects that you latch on to are basic latch points, but eventually other objects such as mines that detonate if you touch them while you’re latched to them, and dummy points that break shortly after you latch on to them. This gets me to the other thing that Gravity Hook HD is: it is difficult. So very difficult. This game takes mastery of its physics engine and quick reaction times in order to have any hope of getting a high score.

Gravity Hook HD on iOS is a tremendous improvement over its Flash version, because of the quicker reaction times you have by being able to tap anywhere on a touchscreen instead of using a mouse. The game is also a universal app, but controls about as well on the iPhone as it does on the iPad. I noticed similar score ranges between my iPhone and iPad.

Identical to Canabalt, there are leaderboards for your top 10 local scores, as well as the top 100 daily, weekly, monthly, and all-time scores. Danny Baranowsky returns with several new tracks for Gravity Hook HD, that rotate every time you ascend several hundred feet. There’s also a Classic Mode that plays like the original Gravity Hook, that will make you appreciate just how much more forgiving Gravity Hook HD is.

The problem with Gravity Hook HD is that its core gameplay concept isn’t built for simple addiction like how Canabalt was – it just isn’t as simple. The difficulty level is often daunting. It’s a lot harder to get a good session going, particularly as there’s more thought required to succeed as you need to realize where you are and the closest point to latch on is. It’s more involved, and that makes it harder to enjoy in part because it is much more of a complex and challenging concept. It doesn’t have that simple addictiveness of a game like Canabalt.

But the challenge and relative complexity of Gravity Hook HD are part of the package – this is a game that is unashamed to be unforgiving, and if you can appreciate that, you will likely appreciate Gravity Hook HD to be more than just the typical pick up and play game, but what makes it unique keeps it from being truly great. However, Semi Secret’s touch is all over this game, and that’s what makes it really good, if you can survive it.

HelloTXT Seeks to Streamline Social Media Posting

HelloTXT Seeks to Streamline Social Media Posting is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

hellotxt-ipadHelloTXT is designed to update your myriad of social networks from within one application. It is a great concept, but a bit buggy in its current form.

HelloTXT is a universal app that works across iOS devices. All the major social media networks are here: Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Google Buzz; over 50 in total.

The HelloTXT menu is divided into four sections: Post, My Feed, Settings and Networks. Portrait mode displays these four features with an icon, while landscape has a sidebar menu with access to other options. From within the Networks section a user can easily tap on a social network, input the login credentials and have the ability to send out updates.

Posting to a network is pretty easy and works well. (…)

Mr. Giggle Offers Tetris-Like Play

Mr. Giggle Offers Tetris-Like Play is a post from: Best Iphone Apps Review Website

mr-giggle-ipadMr. Giggle is a very fun and addictive game that plays well on the iPhone but is even better with the extra screen real estate on the iPad.

Mr. Giggle is a universal app, meaning that with one purchase it can be downloaded and played on either an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

Much like Tetris, the object is to manipulate a group of colored shapes to clear the screen. However, unlike Tetris the shapes are all snarky squares that either smile or frown depending on their mood. By swiping on the rows and columns the squares can be moved around and eliminated by matching them with like colors.

From the main screen you can access the various settings by tapping on one of four icons. A tool icon brings up the settings menu, which allows for setting the game timer for one, two, or three minutes. This is how long you will have to (…)
